The Huntington Historical Society is pleased to offer tours of the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill.

The mill, which was built in 1795, is owned by the Nature Conservancy and is the only surviving mill in Huntington. This historic site provided a way for farmers to transform their oats, wheat and corn into flour, which made the mill an extremely important part of the local agricultural past.

In addition, it is one of the best preserved 18th century tide mills in the country. This is an unusual and terrific way to enjoy Huntington’s rich heritage.

These private tours are accessible by a short boat ride only. Please not that neither the boat nor the mill is handicapped accessible. This trip is not available to children under

Nurse Retires

Nesconset resident and registered nurse Louise Ramos, finished her last shift caring for mothers and their babies in the postpartum unit at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, where she has been deeply rooted for the past 46 years. August 1st, 2012 may have been the last day she worked as a nurse but it also was the official start of her retirement.

Hospital officials and her fellow employees honored the compassionate and giving, yet seemingly shy nurse, who was not eager to hold the spotlight.

Louise, 69, began her nursing career directly out of high school after taking a summer job as a nurse aide. It was that lifechanging summer that she realized she no longer wanted to become a school teacher, but rather pursue a nursing career.

She graduated from nursing school in 1965 and began working at the medical center in 1966.

Her first nursing position was in labor and delivery, a role she held for 20 years before making the move to postpartum. “I just loved obstetrics and gynecology, so I never wanted to stray too far from taking care of mothers and their babies,” said Mrs. Ramos.

Rallied by a group of co-

workers on her last day, Mrs. Ramos was described as the type of nurse that will always go above and beyond for her patients.

She even said, “I wanted to leave each day knowing I did everything in my power to make sure I was helping my patients.” Her co-workers reminisced on a memorable story, that so greatly defined her dedicated nature, which occurred during a shift were Mrs. Ramos stayed on to make sure a mother delivered her baby, all while being in labor herself. She was so concerned with the patient that by the time she finished helping the mother in labor, she gave birth only 20 minutes later. Her co-workers expressed how much she will be missed, concerned as to how they will run the unit without her. With them she left this simple, yet powerful bit of advice, “Always do your very best.”

“Throughout her nearly five decades of nursing service at our medical center, Louise has always been extremely dedicated and loyal to both her patients and her coworkers,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Gara Edelstein, MSN, RN. “She represents the outstanding clinical skills

and compassion that St. Catherine’s nurses provide to patients everyday. We will miss her dearly.”

When asked what she will miss most about working at the medical center Mrs. Ramos said “I am going to miss the patient care, comradery with my peers, and wished I could have been here when the Maternity Department was completely renovated.”

Mrs. Ramos is retiring on the brink of the completion of a newly renovated Maternity Department. The new unit will continue offering mothers and their babies a family-center approach to maternal child care, but with new features including completely renovated labor and delivery suites and private, postpartum rooms.

While Mrs. Ramos has enjoyed her career as a nurse at the medical center, she is happy to retire and looks forward to traveling. In fact, she already has firm plans to go to the Outer Banks in North Carolina this September, followed by a trip to Florida after the holidays. She also plans to enjoy spending more time with her husband, four sons and nine grandchildren.

It’s here. The last day of my 20’s. The beginning of the next stage of life, that magical, as yet unknown frontier known as my 30’s. What will this next decade bring?

Normally, a birthday is just another year. A flip of the daily calendar. No real difference.

But this year, it seems different.

This year, I find myself using my milestone as a benchmark, as an evaluation of where my life has taken me thus far and where I want to take it from this point forward. Is it what I expected?

No, not at all. Is that a bad thing? Nope, not necessarily.

Since when did anything go according to plan?

Birthdays are exciting to me, in that they signify a great opportunity for a fresh start, even if you didn’t think you needed one. Trust me, we all need one, if for no other reason than to reinvigorate ourselves, to find that motivation to make all those longput-off changes…and to find that elusive sense of fulfillment and happiness we are all continually in search of.

Sure, a clean slate can start on any day, at any point in time that we see fit. But there is just something about a brand new birthday year that just goes with a brand new you, isn’t there?

Of course, this doesn’t mean I am necessarily overjoyed to turn 30, mind you. There is

still something… icky about that number for me, something less-than-appealing about rolling over that hill, so to speak. Just like there are those who would rather remain teenagers forever, or 21, or 49, or whatever the case may be – I’m content to be “Forever 29” for the foreseeable future – at least at heart.

So here’s to the last (official) day of being 20-something. And here’s to tomorrow, and the next day, and every day after that. May they each bring new and exciting milestones much bigger than a mere number on a birthday cake.

This year, the Concert Series provided a forum for local community groups to spread the word regarding their services and operations such as credit unions and green power.

Christopher Mustakas, who was on leave from a tour in Afghanistan, was honored for his dedicated service to this Country as a member of the United States Marine Corps.

While Corporal Kurt Kusterbeck, also of the United States Marine Corps was honored for his service as a Marine Airborne Specialist and a Combat Lifesaver.

All three of these Hometown Heroes are role models that our entire community are proud to and honored to have as neighbors.

Furthermore, Legislator Kennedy, in conjunction with Long Island Cares, was able to raise a recordsettiing $718 and 801 pounds of food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, for stocking local food pantries, through the generosity of the entire community. In addition, the community and local businesses raised over $2,500 to help send Maria

Suffolk County Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce completed their 2012 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with Full House rocking the final show this season. This year the Series featured musical acts such as Songs In The Attic, Rocket Man, Liverpool Shuffle and That 70’s Band, who kicked off this year’s wonderful series.

In addition, Legislator Kennedy had the honor and privilege of recognizing several Hometown Heroes who are wonderful role models for our young people and our entire community.

We held a Send-Off Rally for Maria Michta, our Olympian, who is currently in London preparing to compete in the 20K Race Walk as part of the American Olympic team.

Concert Series Success

Stony Brook University announced that the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc., has once again funded the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & M a t h e m a t i c s ) Collaborative with a $100,000 grant as part of their Innovation Generation National

Partnership program.

Through the grant, the STEM Collaborative will provide resources and facilitators for the creation of four STEM Tech clubs and the continuation of the successful TechPREP program. This past year the grant served more than 300 students from high-needs school districts.

at the Brentwood Freshman Center in Brentwood, William Floyd Middle School in Moriches, Harrison Hale Community Educational Resource Center in Middle Island and the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County headquarters in Commack. STEM Tech will run throughout the 2012-2013 academic year with students preparing service learning projects

culminating with a conference where they will present projects addressing some of the regional environmental issues currently affecting Long Island.

In addition to STEM Tech, the grant provides for a fifth year of support for the TechPREP program beginning in March 2013. TechPREP is a multi-track program that introduces technology fields to girls in sixth through eighth grades. It provides 90 hours of educational and experiential learning for middle school girls in the areas of computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering.

“This grant will allow TechPREP and STEM Tech to continue developing opportunities for students to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics while meeting a variety of role models from the community, industry and the university,” said Carrie-Ann Miller, Director of Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP. “Students learn first-hand about innovation, project development and the potential they have to impact the future.”

Paul Siegel, an Adjunct Lecturer and STEM Smart administrator in the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook and Co-Director of STEM Tech and TechPREP, observed that the support from Motorola Solutions also

provides a way for Stony Brook University and the Long Island business community to spread some of their intellectual capital and entrepreneurial acumen into areas of need.

Members of the STEM Collaborative include: Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology & Society, Stony Brook’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, Stony Brook’s Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP), Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, the Long Island Regional Service Learning Network and ConnectToTech, a consortium of industry representatives.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation's Innovation Generation program is designed to inspire students to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Innovation Generation funding equips students with the skills essential to both their lives today and their future success through funding, employee volunteers and intragrantee collaboration.

This year, the program will provide $4.9 million in grants to 87 organizations, including STEM Tech and TechPREP, to support hands-on, innovative after-school programs, science and math clubs, teacher training and mentoring programs.

Beneficiary Of Barclays The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is excited to announce another opportunity to support its many life-saving programs. Each corporation worked on a different volunteer project to help improve and maintain the equestrian facilities at Pal-O-Mine.

Each year Pal-O-Mine receives support from local corporations to help

Paella perfect for last summer soiree When autumn is on the horizon and temperatures are about to take a turn for the colder, many families prefer to enjoy one last fiesta outdoors before calling it quits on the outdoor entertaining season. The following recipe for "Vegetable Paella" from Deb Roussou's "350 Best Vegan Recipes" (Robert Rose) makes a great dinner on the deck with family and friends.

Vegetable Paella

Nathan Winograd, who heads up the No Kill Nation movement, states the following: How did Allegany County, MD go from an 85% kill rate to a 94% save rate? They did it with a highly effective, three step process: 1. Stop the killing. 2. Stop the killing. 3. Stop the killing.

They also got rid of their regressive director, embraced the community and have focused on adoptions. How did Austin, TX go from killing an animal every 12 minutes to a 92% save rate?

The same way. How did Marquette, MI go from a 64% rate of killing to a 93% save rate? The same. The number of No Kill communities is increasing rapidly. And, for those who defend killing based on the myth of pet overpopulation, the jig is up.

As I’ve said many times, the first step to having a No Kill Shelter is to get rid of the shelter directors who believe that adoptable animals have to be killed to control the shelter population.

I’m currently gathering data on those Long Island Shelters with the highest rate of killing, and I’ll report my findings to you in an upcoming column. Meanwhile, please remember that no shelter employee has the right to come to your home and demand that you turn your pet over to them without a court order, even if your dog has bitten someone. They must have a court order issued by a judge. Just because they are wearing a uniform and hold the title of animal control officer, they are NOT law officers. They’re just regular shelter employees wearing a uniform.
