A Word from the Publisher

Goodbye July, Hello August! It’s hard to believe that our “endless summer of heat” will soon be coming to an end. I honestly can’t remember another summer being this hot, though I’m getting forgetful in my old age. Thankfully, we replaced our air conditioner a couple years ago with a more energy efficient unit.

Although the replacement cost was expensive, so were the repairs getting on our old unit. But we were pleasantly surprised to see about $150 knocked off our FP&L bills every month, so it doesn’t take long for a new system to pay for itself if you’re on the fence about replacing.

The month of August has no major holidays, but parents will soon be able to celebrate peace and quiet as the kids head back to school. As our student writer, Zoe Stoler, points out in her column on page 28, it’s a bit odd that PB County Schools are starting back on a Thursday this year (August 10th to be exact.) So, it might take kids another week or so to adjust having to start on such an unusual day.

If you reside outside of the 36 communities the Neighborhood News direct mails to each month, we also offer a free digital subscription – just email our office to request having your email added, and you’ll automatically receive our issue that you can read on your phone or computer. You can also read our issues online at www.NeighborhoodNewsInfo.com or on our Facebook Page (Neighborhood News-Lake Worth.)

And if your community has a clubhouse you’d like Neighborhood News issues delivered to each month, please contact us to coordinate. Have a great August and safe Back to School for those with kids at home!

Surprising Places to Inject Botox

Botox is a brand name for Botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin that the medical and cosmetic industries use small doses for therapeutic and aesthetic purposes. Because moving the muscles of the face causes wrinkles, Botox injections can prevent a muscle from moving for a limited time. Most people are familiar with the most common areas that we inject with botox, such as the “11’s”, forehead, and smile lines around the eyes. However, there are many other areas of the face that can benefit from botox injections.

The Chin: Bone and tissue loss that come with age contribute to wrinkling and dimpling of the chin skin. Botox is used to freeze muscles in the chin to smooth wrinkles, giving a softer more prominent appearance of the chin.

Eyebrows: Eyebrows can droop with age, pulling the upper eyelids down and causing a tired look. A small amount of Botox can be injected above the lateral aspect of the eyebrows to lift droopy brows.

Upper lip: Botox can be injected into the upper vermillion border, which is called a “lip flip”. This treatment helps to smooth wrinkles above the lip and create fuller looking lips without dermal fillers.

It is important to have a board-certified, skilled medical professional administer Botox injections. Siperstein Dermatology Group is happy to offer cosmetic consultations to help you decide which treatment may be best for you.

August 7 is Lighthouse Day

Lighthouses, with their towering structures and beaming lights, have served as guiding beacons for centuries, ensuring the safe passage of ships and guarding lives at sea. Ancient lighthouses were often nothing more than fires built on platforms or hills, but they proved so important for navigation that they soon became dramatic structures.

One of the first famous towers was the Pharos of Alexandria. Constructed around 280 B.C. in Egypt, it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse was more than 500 feet tall. Damaged by repeated earthquakes, it had collapsed entirely by 1323 A.D. Its remains were found in the Mediterranean in 1968.

Over time, lighthouse technology evolved. During the medieval period, stone-tower lighthouses began to dot coastlines across Europe. The development of more advanced lighting systems, such as the Fresnel lens in the 19th century, revolutionized lighthouse illumination and extended their range.

In the modern era, advancements in navigation technology have transformed the role of lighthouses. Global Positioning System (GPS) and electronic navigational aids have reduced reliance on visual markers, leading to the decommissioning of many traditional lighthouses. However, these structures continue to serve as historical landmarks and tourist attractions.

Heroics at Cape Disappointment

In February 2023, Coast Guard station Cape Disappointment in Oregon got a mayday call from a mariner who was in trouble on a day meant for trouble.

The wind was howling, waves rolling over 20 feet high, and a 35-foot fishing boat was taking on water at the mouth of the Columbia River sand bar -popularly known as the Graveyard of the Pacific, one of the most dangerous crossings in the world.

Nearby, a Jayhawk helicopter crew at the Coast Guard rescue school was conducting training exercises and responded, lowering swimmer John "Branch" Walton into the high seas. Stunning video on Youtube shows Walton swimming toward the boat seconds before a massive wave flips the large boat over like a toy, throwing the mariner overboard. Walton, though dragged under the water himself, nonetheless managed to reach the mariner and both were eventually safely lifted up to the helicopter, according to The New York Times.

A few hours later, Walton officially graduated from his training. The story had a rather strange twist, however. The mariner, who had a history of criminal and erratic behavior, had actually stolen the boat earlier that week. He was subsequently arrested.

Excessive Sweat is the Pits

Sweating is our body's central air conditioning system, a normal and necessary response that regulates our core temperature and maintains our body's equilibrium. But there can always be too much of a good thing, and sometimes that excessive sweat is a red flag that you shouldn't ignore.

Excessive sweating is common for people who have infections, take medications (such as certain antidepressants) or are going through hormonal changes like menopause. Another cause is hyperhidrosis, which can affect the hands, feet, underarms, and face, sometimes without any obvious trigger, like heat. Heavy sweating can also be a warning sign. Seek medical attention right away if your excessive sweating is accompanied by pain in the chest, throat, jaw, arms, or shoulders; or if you have cold skin and a rapid pulse.

Your physician may also be able to help with excessive sweating when antiperspirant and wicking clothing aren't enough. A variety of medical treatments are available for excessive sweating and hyperhidrosis, such as prescriptionstrength antiperspirants or Iontophoresis treatments, which block sweat glands with an electrical current. Botox injections can also temporarily deactivate sweat glands, and miraDry treatments can target and destroy sweat glands.

Health insurance does not always cover treatment for excessive sweating, so check your benefits and budget accordingly. In some extreme cases, especially excessive sweating in the hands, a minor surgery can provide immediate relief.

The Disposable Blade’s Cutting-Edge History

Check out the trash can in a bathroom and there's a good chance you'll find a disposable razor blade, given that roughly 160 million Americans use them. Before disposable blades, many men used straight razors that they'd keep for years on end. These blades had to be constantly sharpened, eventually rusted and could be dangerous to use. A fair number of folks simply skipped shaving altogether.

Yet as the 19th century wrapped up, technological innovation was reshaping society at breakneck speed. While cars and lightbulbs garnered much attention, other breakthroughs like the Gillette disposable razor, invented in 1895, were improving quality of life.

King C. Gillette revolutionized shaving by creating affordable steel blades that were quite sharp, but also cheap and equipped with disposable heads which could be replaced as needed. Further, Gillette's safety razors used built-in skin barriers to reduce cuts. The disposable razor blade was also an example of a cutting-edge business strategy as Gillette struck gold having created a steady stream of return customers.

Today, the company that still bears his name remains among the biggest razor blade companies in the world. Interestingly enough, Gillette was a utopian socialist who hated capitalism and competition, but war may have ultimately sealed his company's lasting fortune. When the U.S. entered World War I, the American government contracted Gillette to produce millions of razors for American troops. When the men returned home, many kept using Gillette razors.

They slide, they glide, they leap tall dams in a single whoosh. They are salmon, the remarkable migrating fish, which often need to be on the other side of a dam if they want to spawn.

Developed by Whooshh Innovations, the Salmon Cannon has now transported tens of millions of fish over previously journeyending obstacles, and it's an idea that may save the salmon and restore ecological balance. The idea is elegantly simple. Using a series of tubes filled with water and high-pressure air, the device propels salmon over dams and other obstacles, allowing them to successfully reach their spawning grounds.

The process begins as the fish naturally swim into a soft tube. With a burst of pressurized air and water, the salmon are propelled through the tube, soaring over major obstructions and landing safely in the water on the other side. The latest versions of the Salmon Cannon even sort the fish -- salmon go over the dam, while random strays are allowed to exit.

The device has been successfully employed in various regions, including the Pacific Northwest in the United States and British Columbia in Canada, aiding the recovery of salmon populations and revitalizing vital ecosystems. See YouTube for several videos of the Whooshh Innovations cannon in action.

Endless Scrolling is an Addiction

It seems like innocent fun: Scroll through TikTok, Instagram or Facebook clips to see people with funny dogs, fabulous houses, and weird lifestyles. But if you do it too much, you become hypnotized or even addicted to the experience. Over time you become isolated, anxious and depressed, says psychiatrist Dr. Sanjay Jain.

Ironically, while you are becoming isolated, the people making the reels are out and about training their pets, working on their fancy houses, and doing fun stuff. If you continue scrolling instead of doing something, you miss the chance to build your own social and life skills.

According to Jain, more than an hour spent on social media each day suggests an addiction that may leave you stressed and feeling anxious when not scrolling. Worse, you start comparing your life to others and stop interacting with real people as much. In fact, if you can't imagine deleting these controversial apps, you might have a problem.

Some advice: Keep your own life tasks at the top of your mind. Work on being inspired. If you love funny animal videos, start engaging with animals yourself. What you regularly watch may give you some ideas about hobbies that would be interesting to try. And lastly, talk more. Get a real-life conversation started with a real human being. Face to face -- not on text or posting.

If you are a first-time homebuyer, you likely have questions regarding the home-buying process. Let's start with what qualifies as a first-time homebuyer. Generally, this term refers to an individual purchasing their principal property.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides a broad definition, including the following: Someone who hasn't owned a principal residence in the threeyear period before purchasing a new home. An individual who has never owned a principal residence, even if their spouse was a homeowner. Single parents who previously owned a home with their ex-spouse. Or a displaced homemaker who only owned property with their spouse.

First-time homebuyers often have access to special benefits, such as lower down payments, grants, and assistance with closing costs sponsored by state and federal governments. Some lenders also offer incentives and special loan products for first-time homebuyers. Those with low-to-moderate incomes may qualify for grants or loans that do not require repayment if they stay in the home for a specific time, as well as closing cost assistance.

These options are provided through government-sponsored programs, with eligibility criteria based on credit scores, income levels, and local lender requirements. First-time home buying can be an exciting adventure when you are aware of the opportunities available throughout the purchase process. Whether or not you are a first-time homebuyer, contact Sheryl to start your home-buying journey.

Preventing Diabetic Vision Loss

Sadly, there are between 35-40 million people in the U.S. that have diabetes. And another 95 million have prediabetes. Unless diabetes is brought under control, the eyes, along with the entire body, can be very negatively affected.

Diabetes doesn’t change the way our eyes look.

In the early stages, you cannot tell if eyes are affected unless you have a dilated eye exam with an eye doctor. These exams can discover optic nerve damage and abnormal blood vessels. They can also detect swollen lenses inside the eye. Subtle changes in the beginning may be almost unnoticeable by the patient, but an optometrist or ophthalmologist can usually see those changes.

Diabetic retinopathy affects about 30% of adults with diabetes. It causes blood vessels to leak, which can interfere with vision and eventually lead to near total vision loss. I can’t emphasize enough about the danger of uncontrolled diabetes. Obesity, as well as not being physically active, contributes to this awful disease.

Try to keep your weight down, don’t smoke, stay active/ move more, keep your blood pressure and cholesterol at normal levels, and have your annual blood tests and dilated vision exam. Early detection of diabetes helps protect your vision and your health.

Since 1996, Crystal Clear Optical has been helping people with eyeglasses, contact lenses and eye exams. Please call us at 561-963-0099 if we can be of any help.

China Faces a Marriage Problem

China wants people to say, "I do," but a growing number of Chinese are saying "we won't." A record low 6.83 million Chinese people got married in 2022, down from 7.63 million in 2021, after peaking at 13 million in 2013. China's youth unemployment rate weighs in at 20 percent, far above the 7.6 percent in the U.S. This high rate could encourage people to get married later in life.

The Chinese government has launched campaigns to encourage early marriage, but so far, their calls have failed. The decline in marriages comes as China's fertility rate continues to plummet with a birth rate of just 1.28, compared to 1.62 in the U.S. The needed replacement rate hovers around 2.1 children, and any rate below that could lead to a declining population. Some countries, like the U.S., use immigration to keep their populations steady, but China has not signaled any intention to accept immigrants.

China's population has already started to shrink, falling by 850,000 in 2022 from a year prior. The UN reports that China's population may number 1.313 billion by 2050. Looking further ahead, the Brookings Institute projects that China's population could weigh in at just 800 million by 2100.

Shrinking populations are a concern because fewer people mean fewer consumers. Many companies rely on ever-expanding demand. If revenues and profits fall because there are simply fewer consumers, companies may see their market decline and lay off workers. Parts of Europe, Japan, and South Korea, among others, are set to see their future populations contract.

Every inch utilized, every item in place, at pricing so low you can afford to do them all… Now imagine it done tomorrow! The key to a great closet is not gadgets. It’s about function.

“If I do my job right, it becomes easier to put items where they go instead of where they don’t,” said Buddy Castaldi, owner of Closet Maven. “This is especially important for everyone from busy professionals to children, because a home in order promotes good habits, a clearer mind, and less stress.”

That’s where instinct comes in, and Buddy has 37 years of it. Closet Maven is different from any other closet company for two major reasons: They charge low, By-The-Foot Pricing, and they offer Same-Day Installation facilitated by a state-of-the-art workshopon-wheels, which they bring to your home. “A contractor who has their entire workshop with them can do a much better job than one trying to retrofit something created offsite. We are a small family business offering a better product at a greater value, and you can have your closet by the end of the day,” said Buddy.

Closet Maven will measure, design, and install all on the same day. They will also empty your closets, remove old shelving, and spackle and prep walls at no extra charge. A Closet Maven closet, home office, garage, pantry or laundry room will add value to your home and home life.

Line Dancing Makes Comeback (again)

Line dancing is a lot of fun, but it can be baffling on your first try. But there are some secrets to the art, and when you understand them, line dancing is much less daunting. First, a line dance lasts from three to five minutes, and you can drop out at any time. Among all the popular line dances, the Electric Slide is the shortest, lasting from two to three minutes and makes a good beginning dance to learn. It is the dance that often opens a line dance party, especially as a warm up. If you are new to line dancing, here are some tips:

•The dance starts when the singing starts. Everything before that is the intro.

•Moves usually change after four counts. When you get to four, you'll change direction or make a new move.

•You can make any move plain or fancy, low movement or high. Instead of doing stomps, for example, do a tap.

•How many times the dancers turn to face a different direction are called walls. A line dance can have one wall or up to four. But the dance will usually end up facing the same way it started. Other popular line dances: Cha-cha slide- You get to make a little cha-cha move. There are some hops, but you can substitute tip toes. Boot Scootin' Boogie- More difficult in that it has a series of hops, including one in which dancers cross their legs. It also has a quick half-beat step. Cotton-Eyed Joe- If you love that old-fashioned fiddle, this one’s for you. It has some turns and toe taps.

Submersible Industry Cruises On

When the ill-fated OceanGate Titan submersible recently suffered a catastrophic failure while en route to the wreck of the Titanic, some wondered if the tragedy may have sunk the submersible industry. But several companies are still making submersibles, both for scientists and tourists.

Companies like Triton Submarines are leveraging cuttingedge -- but proven -- technology to produce highly advanced submersibles that have already explored ocean depths much greater than the wreck of the Titanic for scientific purposes. Its investors include James Cameron, the legendary director of Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator 2, and an experienced deep sea explorer in his own right. Cameron himself successfully piloted a submersible to the bottom of the Challenger Deep -- the deepest place on Earth. Cameron's vessel, the Deepsea Challenger, reached a depth of 35,000 feet. The Titanic lies about 12,500 feet down.

Triton Submarines produces Deepview, a submersible that resembles a transparent acrylic bus and can seat up to 96 people. The large capacity allows it to carry entire classes of students or tour groups on underwater adventures to reefs, for example. The Vinpearl resort on Hon Tre Island in Vietnam now offers submarine tours of reefs and shipwrecks, with tickets starting at under $60.

It remains to be seen whether the OceanGate submersible will take the sparkle off of underwater tourism, but underwater is still the best vantage points to view sea life and wrecks. Adventure tourism, which includes underwater tours, is growing quickly.

Getting Back to

It’s almost already that time of year again, that time when school rolls around. School starts on August 10th this year, which I find slightly odd because it is a Thursday rather than the normal Monday. I’m going into my junior year of high school, probably the hardest year. This is the year that I take the SAT and start looking at colleges. This year, I’m officially an upperclassman.

While I’m not overly excited for the larger workload and stress I will encounter this year, I’m beyond excited to see my friends and take part in school activities. The first semester of the school year is always filled with the best activities, such as Homecoming, football games, and Spirit weeks. These are the events where the best memories are made.

It’s also a new school year with new classes and new goals. Personally, this year I want to put more time into myself and my grades. Reading is one of my biggest passions and last year I let that slip away from me, so one of my goals is to read more in school and at home.

I also want to work harder in all my classes and not let my grades slip. This new school year is a fresh start and an opportunity for memorable new experiences.

Teaching Kids about Money

Everyone either learns about money or learns about money the hard way. People who have $3 million or more usually have learned how to handle money, and they want to preserve their money. One way to do that is to teach their kids about managing money. An annual U.S. Trust survey says the top 1 percent of wealthy families (annual income more than $3 million), teach their kids to work and earn money:

• 85% take out trash, set the table and help with dishes.

• 60% mow the lawn and do yard work.

• 81% work part-time in college.

• 77% work part-time from age 15. According to financial journalist Beile Grunbaum, wealthy people do not make money a taboo topic. They discuss with their children how much things cost and to compare it with the cost of other things. They teach kids how to manage money by letting them earn an allowance. They also encourage their kids to think about how to earn more money, make money work for them, and know the difference between something that makes money (assets) and something that costs them money (liabilities).

Most importantly, Grunbaum says, rich people teach their kids that no one owes them anything and no magical knight is going to save them from trouble. "If they want something, they have to make it happen," Grunbaum told The New York Times.

ARIES: 3/21 - 4/19: Stars say it's time to get that one pesky job off your mind -- the one that you have been avoiding for months. Take one step toward solving the problem every week until it is finished.

TAURUS: 4/20 - 5/20: The new moon on the 16th brings clarity of mind. Now is the time to simplify your life and your space. Get rid of everything that weighs you down.

GEMINI: 5/21 - 6/20: Your innate generosity shines brightly in August, especially when you are generous with your time and good wishes. However, beware of being too generous with money.

CANCER: 6/21 - 7/22: A relaxing vacation, even a three-day weekend, somewhere away is just what you need this month. Instead of scheduling activities, schedule down time, and enjoy the outdoors.

LEO: 7/23 - 8/22: A sudden change in your routine makes for a little psychic confusion, but also brings a fresh perspective. Try to enjoy the chaos and consider whether the change could become a permanent feature of your life.

VIRGO: 8/23 - 9/22: The second week of August is perfect for a burst of creative energy. Spend time on important matters. Someone close to you needs your help but is afraid to ask. Make yourself available.

LIBRA: 9/23 - 10/21: Unusual problems surface at month's end. The solutions will come to you if you stay calm and clear. Get enough sleep and eat well before you figure out the winning plan.

SCORPIO: 10/22 - 11/21: A respected elder gives you some good advice that you might not want to hear. Instead of dismissing it outright, let yourself think about it some. There’s more to it than you know, at least right now.

SAGITTARIUS: 11/22 - 12/21: An upcoming spontaneous whim will be regretted. Even a longterm desire has the potential for serious drawbacks. Let it ride and make no permanent changes.

CAPRICORN: 12/22 - 1/19: Someone needs you to give them a chance. Don't rely on gossip in judging someone. Empathy has always been your strong suite. It will be a fantastic moment.

AQUARIUS: 1/20 - 2/18: A great idea lurks just in a dusty corner of your head. Look for unexpected connections to show it fully. Keep a notepad and pen by your bed when it strikes.

PISCES: 2/19 - 3/20: You face a decision on purchasing something rather expensive this month. It’s certainly not a necessity, but it will bring you a well-deserved amount of happiness. Time to splurge.

Corn Yields Big Health Benefits

Corn is an ancient food that deserves our respect. The Aztecs served corn, and the Mayans did too. Native Americans saved the Pilgrims from starvation by demonstrating how to grow corn. Now, modern people find it an excellent source of great flavor, vitamin C, and fiber. Corn bran can protect the heart.

One study at Illinois State University shows that men who ate a low-fat diet plus 20 grams (less than a teaspoon) of corn bran each day for six weeks had a 13 percent drop in triglycerides, the blood fats that contribute to heart disease. The soluble fiber in corn binds with cholesterol in bile from the liver. It then passes from the body and takes the cholesterol with it.

There's more to corn than just medical benefits. Corn on the cob is a great seasonal treat. Choose white corn instead of yellow for more fiber. Buy mature corn and cook it while it's still fresh. Husk just before cooking. Steaming corn is best because boiling draws out some of the nutrients. When adding corn to a salad, use raw corn for a flavorful, crunchy addition to other vegetables. Try making a Spicy

Southwestern Cornbread:

Cook 1/2-cup diced red bell pepper with 1/2-cup onion and one minced jalapeno in 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat until soft. Prepare an 8-ounce box of cornbread mix, adding 1 cup corn and the pepper mixture to the batter. Pour into a greased 8-inch round cake pan, sprinkle with 1/2-cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese, and bake at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes. Serves 8 to 12.

Night Brushing is Heart Healthy

all). Within each group, researchers also noted whether subjects were smokers or nonsmokers, and prognosis at the time of hospitalization.

Unsurprisingly, smokers who never brushed had the worst health outcomes among participants, with the lowest survival probability compared to non-smokers and smokers who brushed at least once a day. Among nonsmokers, those who never brushed were much less likely to survive cardiovascular events, and nonsmokers who brushed twice a day or just at night had significantly higher overall survival probability than those who only brushed in the morning or not at all.

The study joins a mounting body of evidence that links poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. According to the New York Times, some scientists believe that periodontal bacteria may travel to the arteries and contribute to the development of vascular diseases.
