The Southcoast East Looking Back

Prior to the Cape Cod Canal in 1916, the Cape and the SouthCoast regions had deep, rich histories and reputable destinations for leisure. Yet, when the Cape became a modern brand name vacation haven, the SouthCoast did not. That said, the SouthCoast history is intriguing. For example, Fairhaven, located in the eastern portion of Dartmouth and known as Cushnea, was established in 1659 by English settlers. Later, in 1787, Cushnea turned into New Bedford and in 1812, this eventually split into today's Acushnet, New Bedford and Fairhaven. During first half of the 19th century, whale oil was the primary source for light and economic prosperity for 200 years before. In fact, in 1838, Fairhaven was the 2nd largest whaling port in the United States. However, notable industries are created by notable people. Henry Huttleston Rogers, a businessman and philanthropist, was an important pillar in building much of what Fairhaven is today. He made his fortune as an advisor to John D. Rockefeller, owner of Standard Oil Company. In 1885, Roger's built Fairhaven's town hall,

Rogers School, Fairhaven High School, Unitarian Memorial Church and Millicent Library which was named after his daughter. Other notable residents include John Cooke, the last surviving Pilgrim to make voyage to Plymouth in 1620, Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail around the world and Superman, yes, the late Christopher Reeve. Yet, in those times, there were other important people from in the SouthCoast. For example, Dr. Maurice Robbins determined that, in Marion, Indian settlements date back to 3000 B.C. Prior to settler's arriving in 1679, Marion was known as “Sippican� named after the Indian tribe that lived there. In 1852, Sippican was renamed Marion after Francis Marion, the inventor of guerilla warfare, strategies during the American Revolution. Throughout much of the 19th century, Marion was the training ground for sea captains. As an aside, Captain Benjamin Spooner Briggs lived in Marion. In 1872, his ship, Mary Celeste, disappeared between the Azores and Portugal, a mystery still unresolved.

While Brigg was a captain of the sea, Elizabeth Taber was one of education. In 1876, at the age of 85, she established Tabor Academy, a private school still in session. My father, Steve Fireman, and uncle, Paul Fireman, previous owner of Reebok International, attended Tabor. Back during the 19th century, Mattapoisett and Marion economies were intertwined. While Marion supplied the Captains, Mattapoisett supplied the ships. Mattapoisett, settled in 1750 and incorporated in 1857, is Wampanoag for “a resting place”. It's ship building industry thrived between 1740 and 1870; over 400 ships were built, including The Acushnet, where author of Moby Dick, Herman Melville, sailed and deserted. In the 1850's, like Marion, Mattapoisett was popular place for rich and famous summer dwellers such as Oliver Wendell Holmes. And if Marion and Mattapoisett weren't suitable destinations, East Wareham certainly was. Wareham, formed in 1678 and incorporated in

1739, was influenced by 17th century Indian culture. Today, the town has the words “Neppinae Kekit” on it's seal which is Wampanoag for “summer home”. East Wareham got it's name during the canal's dig. In the early 1900's, the district located at today's Route 6 and 28 was called Agawam Village. As such, people were confusing another town, Agawam, and Agawam Village; hence, the name, East Wareham was born. The ironworks industry was the main engine of East Wareham's economy thanks to waterpower from local rivers, skilled workers and exploding coastal trade. Beyond ironworks, science also played a role. Samuel Tisdale, owner of Agawam Ironworks was also a naturalist and preservationist. He met Theodore Lyman, a Harvard University Student who studied under Louis Agassiz, a famous, national scientist. Together, the three men created the first trout hatchery at Maple Spring which is part of the Wareham Waterworks.

Mortgage Rates Go Up?

That is the million-dollar question that we are asked every day. While it is impossible to exactly predict what rates will do in the future it seems that for the short term at least that rates will stay low for a while. The recent announcement by the Federal Reserve that they are starting another round of quantitative easing, or QE3, sends a strong signal to all that the rates will remain low. QE3 is the Federal Reserve buying mortgage-backed securities. This brings the yield down which in turn should translate to lower rates. The idea of the purchases, popularly known as QE3, is to spur economic activity by pumping more cash into the economy and driving down rates. Those taking out new home loans, either to purchase or refinance, will be among the first beneficiaries of the policy. The low rates in recent months, coupled with tighter inventories, have helped both home values and sales. On Wednesday, the National Association of

Realtors reported a 7.8% gain in sales of previously owned homes compared to a year earlier, while the Census Bureau reported that housing starts and building permits rose substantially in August. Other readings have reported that home prices are finally turning higher after years of steady decline. The American economy has grown at a lackluster pace this year and has struggled to create jobs, but the housing sector is a relative bright spot for the first time since the 2007-9 recession, housing is clearly in recovery mode. Prices for previously owned homes also rose when compared with a year earlier, a factor that could spur consumer spending by helping homeowners feel more confident about their finances.The median price nationwide for existing home re-sales rose 9.5 percent, to $187,400, the association said. The Federal Reserve is trying to help housing build more momentum, and last week it started a
