CREATE THE FUTURE OF JAZZ
NEC has long been a pioneer in the education of jazz artists, having started the first fully accredited jazz studies program at the conservatory level nearly 50 years ago. Our rigorous and open-minded approach to improvisation and composition has been a constant since Jaki Byard and George Russell created the school’s groundbreaking curriculum. NEC continues to train the most talented young musicians in the broadest range of styles, while at the same time seeking ways to expand the jazz tradition through the development of students’ individual voices.
According to JazzTimes, “NEC’s jazz studies depart ment is among the most acclaimed and successful in the world; so says the roster of visionary artists that have comprised both its faculty and students.”
The community of the NEC Jazz program includes acclaimed alumni and faculty who are among today’s most influential jazz artists, including MacArthur Genius grant recipients and Grammy Award winners.
At NEC, you’ll work closely with multiple faculty mem bers in studio and ensemble settings, as you expand your perspective while learning more about yourself. Explore the jazz tradition and create the music of the future.

WHY I CHOSE NEC
“
My musical and creative goals are to push the boundaries of what we normally see. I’m finding ways to combine my interest for theater, music, film, dance, in ways that feel fulfilling for me.”

NEXT-LEVEL PIANO EXCELLENCE
As a piano student at NEC, you will work with our award-winning faculty, and receive lessons from a senior teacher. The traditional private lesson is vital in our cur riculum; you will also participate in piano studio classes, master classes with NEC faculty and such visiting artists as Emanuel Ax, Richard Goode, Murray Perahia, András Schiff, and Jonathan Biss, solo and concerto competitions, and festivals.
PIANO COMPETITIONS
Our students and graduates have won top prizes in the world’s most prestigious competitions (Queen Elizabeth, Tchaikovsky, Leeds, Rubinstein, Cliburn, Liszt, Dublin, Busoni, Kapell, Gilmore, Young Concert Artists) and are trained to meet the highest international standards of piano playing and music making.
PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
Outside of the studio, you will have many opportunities to listen, learn, and perform. NEC piano and collabora tive piano students perform throughout the year in solo recitals, Liederabends, Sonata Nights, concertos, and in new music concerts.
Featuring NEC piano faculty and special guests, weekly piano performance seminars explore listening, looking, learning, and living as a practicing professional pianist.
Annually, NEC piano students are presented in a festival that includes performances in NEC’s Jordan Hall, along with a year-end Honors Concert in Jordan Hall.

NEC voice students are also encour aged to take advantage of the numerous performance opportunities available throughout the Boston area.

It provides students at NEC the chance to investigate the how and what of sound in a supportive, hands-on environment. Students may explore their voices with real-time spectrography, and immerse themselves in advanced qualitative and quantitative research projects with mentors. Countless opportunities await to deepen a singer’s understanding of the world of sound.
OPERA STUDIES
NEC’s Opera Studies faculty offer a comprehensive program for the aspiring singer-actor, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The two-year graduate course of study includes regularly scheduled classes in stage movement, diction, stage techniques, and Alexander Technique as well as coaching in arias, scenes, and roles. Work in the program is intended to provide you with the tools necessary for development that will continue beyond the prescribed course of study.

The broad range of Liberal Arts Department offerings in literature, history, philosophy, politics, cultural studies, social sciences, environmental studies, film, and foreign languages provides students with opportu nities to study major academic disciplines as well as cultural, social, intellectual, and political contexts for music.
Recognizing that music is culturally
and linguistically situated, the Modern Languages Department strives to be a resource for the NEC community in the study of language and culture. We support NEC’s mission to produce musicians with a broad intellectual perspective, as well as a respect for other cultures and an aware ness of global issues. NEC offers a minor in Liberal Arts for musicians.
CHELSEA FINGAL ’18, VOICE, LIBERAL ARTS MINORINTRODUCTION TO LIBERAL ARTS Patrick Keppel, Chair
It’s always a great pleasure for us in the Liberal Arts at NEC to witness the growth of our students as musicians, critical thinkers, and people in so many truly astonishing ways. We have a unique perspective on the work students do here.
While not a part of the “direct” musical instruction students receive, study in the Liberal Arts is a key part of NEC’s mission and core values as articulated in the Definition of an NEC-Educated Person. This statement asserts that NEC’s goal is not simply to train technical masters, but
to educate whole persons equipped with the critical thinking, reading, writing, interpersonal, and collaborative skills they will need to have successful careers. In this sense, study in the Liberal Arts is a part of the “direct” musical instruction at NEC—a place where you not only go to become a great musician, but to become a great interdisciplinary thinker—which is what musicians are

Financial Aid & Scholarships
FINANCING YOUR NEC EDUCATION
We are committed to providing you with the information that you need to make informed decisions about financing your NEC education. Our goal is to help families under stand costs, commitments, and develop the right aid package for financial well-being and student success.
NEC’s Office of Student Financial Planning administers a variety of programs to help you pay for education-relat ed expenses — including NEC scholarships, federal and state grants, part-time student employment on campus, and loans from federal and private agencies. Most of our applicants will be offered a Financial Aid package that combines several of these awards.
Our Enrollment team looks forward to working with you and your family to support you in attending the NEC program of your choice, and attaining your educational, artistic, and professional goals.
SCHOLARSHIPS
NEC awards institutional scholarships based on merit and need to assist in supporting the educational costs of the world’s best young musicians who wish to pursue their studies at NEC. Scholarships are typically renewable for the normal expected length of a student’s degree program (8 semesters for a Bachelor of Music, 4 semesters for a Master of Music, etc.)
NEC chooses to broadly distribute its scholarship resources to as many students as possible rather than concentrating awards on a few; this approach helps us ensure a consistently strong student body that will provide for musical and artistic experiences at the highest level for all enrolled students.
APPLYING FOR AID
All students who wish to be considered for scholarship funding must complete the NEC Institutional Financial Aid Form as part of the application process (returning students also complete this form annually for scholarship renewal). Students who neglect or choose not to complete this form will not be reviewed for scholarship funding. Deadline for Receipt: February 1
All US Citizens and Permanent Residents must complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for Federal need and non-need based financial aid. Funds include Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work Study (FWS), Direct Student Loans (both subsidized and unsubsidized), ParentPLUS and GradPLUS Loans. Deadline for Receipt: February 1
Information about private alternative education loans is also available for interested students and their families.
