Canberra Olympic Director Nick Xirakis and Majura President Rhonda Parkin.

After many years with Canberra City, the Majura Committee recently voted to join with Canberra Olympic for the 2010 season. Nick Xirakis of Canberra Olympic, spoke of his hopes for the two clubs in coming years: “We’re very happy to go back to our roots so to speak (Majura was formed from the old Downer Olympic Club many years ago) and we’re very happy to give the kids somewhere to look forward to playing in the future. Our major focus will be on the development and the achievement of the children particularly those between the ages 10-14." Initially Canberra Olympic expect to offer the following: Nick said," We'll offer an Encouragement Award: Sponsorship/Assistance for three children selected by the Majura Committee to take part in Academy programs. Olympic won't be involved in the selection process in any way, this will be a Majura decision. We'll offer Coaching, Junior Refereeing, and Goalkeeping clinics from our Senior Club for the juniors each year. The biggest thing we’d like to get out of this relationship, starting next year, is a Women’s Premier League team and Under 18 Women’s team.”

Canberra United: New Coach, new players but can they go one better this time? First home game October 10 v Sydney FC. Check Capital Football website for details.

Additionally, it is proposed an Under 10 Boys and Girls development squad will play together in next year’s 2010 Kanga Cup and the Eurobodalla U10 tournament in October 2010. The vision is to train as a squad once a week. Players, in this development squad, will train together from the start of the season but play in their normal Majura teams on weekends. Selection Policy: Graded teams from Age 11. The Majura Committee is currently reviewing this process. Got some thoughts on any of the above? Why not talk to a Committee member.

Volunteers’ Salute: Paul Whittingham. Paul is a football legend in Canberra. Our current Under 7 training group may not know it but their coach is rated one of the best junior Coaches in the region. Paul started coaching Under 12 Boys at the age of 19 and has hardly missed a season since. He is Majura’s longest serving President (7 years) he’s coached too many Majura teams to name and after 20 years with the club he’s still providing our Under 7’s with extra training on Saturday mornings; and he’s done numerous other roles in the club including Technical Director. “Jimmy Hayes lit the fire in me if you like. He believed in coaching, not just coaching a player to be a soccer player, but coaching life skills, and that’s what I aim to do. I want to improve football skills, but also communication,” said Paul. Paul added, “We don’t just teach players to be soccer players, we teach them to get along with others, to think about consequences of the things they do, communication, diet, how to look after their bodies. “A parent, Aldo Caltaldo, once said to me, ‘your Coaching has been a life changing experience for my son.’ And that made a big impression on me.” Best player Paul coached at Majura? Dom Giampaolo (AIS Graduate) Two players who Paul really enjoyed coaching: Shaun Neuss: He listened, he learned, he had some talent but it was really good to see him blossom

Volunteers’ Salute: Paul Whittingham. (Cont) Tim Heaney: A willing player who went from someone with a lot of heart and not a lot of skill, to someone with a lot of heart and a lot of skill.
