Parents please DON’T tell the players where to run, when to pass, where to stand (positions) or what to do – that’s the Coach’s job.

Your advice puts pressure on your child and all the other children.

Please DO support our teams, encourage everyone and be positive.

Does it matter if our children make a mistake in football?

Please DON’T yell out things like ‘Big Kick’, ‘Just kick it’, ‘pass it’, ‘boot it’ or variations on that theme – it doesn’t help our players in anyway.

Footy talk Football at Majura is one of the first team sports our children play.

Help make it a great experience for them.

I have seen Mick over the years, coaching many teams and always with enthusiasm. When Canberra City first had to have a U18Premier Pathway League team my son Henry was in Mick’s Team, he was 16 at the time. I gained a lot of respect for Mick’s ethics and skills.

When I decided to do the referees’ course with my other son John, I contacted MFC to say we would be available to ref if they needed us, but that we were very junior and would need lots of assistance and there’s Mick again!

Mick’s the ref Co-ordinator as well as coaching Canberra City U16PPL and who knows how many other teams!

Mick reassured us that the course would have us ready to go at reffing, gave us some profiteroles at a pre-season get together and said see you tomorrow! Mick gave us the confidence to do the job, which is exactly what we needed.

Vale Lesley Redman: Majura Life Member Lesley Redman passed away recently. Lesley was an active volunteer for many, many years with the club.

“Lesley always had a smile on her face, she was never unhappy. That was our Lesley. Majura Commitee and friends would like to extend their condolences to Lesley’s family and friends,” said Club President Rhonda Parkin.

Warriors Under 11 Douglas Warnock gives a players view on moving from Under 10’s to Under 11’s at Majura.

This has been a fantastic year so far for my soccer as I have a very good team and we work together and play hard.

At the start of the season, I was a bit scared because I didn’t know about how trials would go and what would happen or whether I would get put into the team that I wanted.

Trials The trials are not scary but they are a bit nerve racking before you get there because you do not know what to expect.

Once you get there, you are just playing the same old game with the same old people that you have been playing with the last few years.

Some of us were moved around a bit. Some were moved from higher to lower and some were moved from lower to higher groups.

But it was really all about playing the best that you could. You must remember to talk and let the selectors know that you are there. You have to turn up to trials otherwise you will get into division 3.

One of the different things this year is that we get to travel to different clubs to play. This is good because you get to see other teams that I have never played against and I might even see friends on other soccer teams.

World Cup Launch

The games may be a bit harder but that means more fun for you because you don’t just win all the games easy as cake.

A-League season 5 starts in August.

W-League and Canberra United start October.

Socceroos next game is against Ireland, in Dublin (August)

Training is essential now that you are in U11s because you will be playing people at your own level and training is more fun because everyone is at a level like you.

Allocation day Allocation day is nerve racking too because you don’t know which team you are going to get into. But the great thing is that because of the trials everyone is playing at a similar level to you no matter what division you get into. I really wanted to be put into a good team but I also wanted my friends to be in my team.

Only one of my friends got onto my team, but I knew that rest of the team anyway.

Take the Majura FC June Challenge: How many Juggles can you do?

Majura Challenge: For ANY players, ANY age, from 3 to 70.

Challenge: How many juggles can you do by Presentation Day? Tell your Coach as you improve. Depending on what level you are at here’s a simple guide.

1.Bounce the ball on your right knee and catch it. 2.Bounce the ball on your left knee and catch it. 3.Vary this and aim to do it THREE times using both knees. (Great for strength training for 7-10 age yrs.)

4. Bounce the ball in front of you and then kick and let the ball bounce each time....until you can get to 10 bounce and touch, bounce and touch on both feet.

5. Gradually experiment with knees and feet and occasionally instead of letting the ball bounce each time, try and keep it up.

6. Once your muscles, strength and touch develop you’ll be flying!

And then you can start flicking off your shoulder, head or anywhere you like. Good luck!

Body position is crucial when we are receiving the ball. Most players should usually take the ball with their instep, left or right, unless they are Ronaldo in which case do whatever you like!

Place two goals 10/15 metres apart.

Player 1 and 2 start either side of the same goal.

Player 1 passes the ball through the goal to player 2.

Player 2 runs to the other goal and passes to player 1.

They turn and head back to the other goal.

Remember to change sides so both feet are used.

Extra Challenge: Which team scores most goals in given time.

(Forfeit a goal if players hit a cone/post.)

Football Tip No 2 (Mini Football at Majura Coaching Tips.)

Choosing the correct foot to receive the ball is critical. It will help you to put yourself in the best position to play the next ball or change direction.

Football Club

Club Captain: Michael Hicks Michael plays for the U18 Div 3, White team. The team is made up of friends who wanted to play together for fun in their final season of junior soccer.

Michael started with Majura in 1999 as an U9 Shark, and has played every year since, except for 2008 when he had a severe break to his right arm.

This did not stop him from being involved in the club as he agreed to be the Saturday coach for the u18 div 3 team (which he would have played in) when no-one would step forward to coach.

Michael’s highlights include Captain of the undefeated under 12 Premiers, under 13’s Coaches & Managers award and under 14’s players’ player.

Michael is proud to have been selected as this year’s Club Captain and is looking forward to visiting Majura, and meeting the Pee Wees and other teams, in his Club Captain’s jumper.

Michael has an older brother David and identical twin sisters Kylie and Rebecca, all who have donned the Majura colours.

Club Captain: Lindsay McAlister Lindsay McAlister, U16G, started with Majura in 2001 as a 7 year old.

She has been with the same team of girls coached by Marcello Solar for most of that time and was named Players’ Player in both 2004 & 2005.

Lindsay is in her second year of coaching. Lindsay and Tess Hemmings are coaching the U10 Girls Twisters. Both are finding coaching very rewarding as they watch the enjoyment and team spirit that the younger girls show as they develop their skills.

Lindsay is also an accredited referee.

Lindsay was at work when the President rang to inform her that she had been selected as Club Captain but rather than telling her the good news her parents just told her that Rhonda wanted to see her the next day about her coaching.

Lindsay assumed that she was going to be in some sort of trouble (with Rhonda? Surely not!) and was very surprised and excited when Rhonda told her the good news!

Lindsay says she is looking forward to visiting the field in her new Club Captains'jumper to watch the mini's play."

In the photo we have (not in order) Shuggie , Haggis, Race-car, Snowman, Lochy, Sparky, Ronaldo, Nickname and Sean Connor. They do have real names but I like the names I’ve given them better. The parents are a great bunch as well.

The Under 9 Swordfish are a fantastic bunch of kids who continue to show that they do really listen to what I am trying to teach them at training.

They amaze me sometimes during games when they play the ball wide, then down the line, then over to the front of goal in a few easy moves , a bit of work on the finishing and “Bob’s your coach”.

Under 10: Focus on Tsunamis.

Like a Saturday lie-in?

Did you know Bob Parkin and Jacko are at Majura at 6am every Saturday setting up the ovals for us all.

After 5 weeks of football, and 5 defeats, mostly by narrow margins, the Tsunamis won. Clearly the half-time chill out is the go. Good work Coach, and good work girls.

It was a game that had everything – great tackles, players running until they could hardly breathe, end to end passing and a goal that cannoned in off the cross bar after a series of passes that went from one end of the field to the other.

No, definitely NOT the World Cup qualifier but the Majura 11 Girls Reds playing Woden at Mawson earlier this month.

The game between the competition’s two undefeated teams ended 11, with parents on both sides applauding the superb football from all the girls, and pleading with the ref to call off the match before a winning goal was scored in a match that neither team deserved to lose.

Under 11s is often the most exciting year at Majura as it’s the year we finish our intra-club comp and players take on teams from rival clubs.

Over 1200 players play football at Majura FC.

For the 11 girls this has produced some great matches and wonderful football. The Reds under coaches Paul Macor and Rob Janssens are so far undefeated.

Thanks to all our volunteers for making it happen.

Coach Jacqui has her Whites performing superbly. The Whites have lost only one match, an unlucky defeat against a Grammar team fielding its strongest side due to the school not being entered in the Red comp.

Mim Soboslay-Moore, and Keelin Howe both scored their first and second goals for Majura in only their second season. And they were both delighted to inform last year’s Assistant Coach Heather Fitt of their prowess. Great work Mim and Keelin.

Phoebe Flynn went one better, knocking in two goals in her very first season.

The Blues have a number of girls who have never played football before but Coaches Katya and Nadine from our under 15s girls have done a superb job inspiring the team. After a few weeks finding their feet the Blues scored their first goal in round 3 before a stunning 5-0 win in only their fourth match.

My son has played for two years and I never realised just how much volunteer work goes into organising and coaching a team.

Majura 3 Radford 0 The season has had a slow start for the U13G Div 1 team...that’s how last month’s report started. Not a win or a goal to boot. But not only have they won but I was there to see their first goal!

Majura playing Radford on the biggest football pitch in the world, were pressing hard and you could sense a goal.

When Emma Kirk sent a high ball in there appeared little danger for the tall Radford keeper. But the bounce on our wonderfully hard drought ridden pitch was so high that no-one could have caught it.

First goal and nice one Emma.

The season has had a slow start for the U13G Div 1 team with the fullsize pitch initially taxing the players' power and stamina. Half the team has not played for a Majura Div 1 team before but the potential is certainly there for some good results.

Hard work on fitness and technique in training sessions with Coach BJ Cook is starting to pay off with a good win last week with goals from Emma Kirk, Breanna Orrell and Claire Bailey. The team is starting to move away from defensive play and pick up on scoring chances.

U/10 girls teams Storm, Tornadoes and Whirlwinds were delighted to have ACTAS Coach and former Canberra United Coach Robbie (Hooksie) Hooker take them through a recent training session.

The girls had a great time and really learnt a lot.

Robbie told them that if they really wanted to make it into the Matilda’s or any elite team they needed to spend 10,000 hours over the next ten years practising. The girls calculated that this meant at least 2.5 hours practise a day – that’s a lot! For a parent that’s obsessive compulsive!
