Belwest entered a women’s team in the Capital Football Women’s Pre-premiership competition which was conducted over two Sundays in March. The team entered the competition with no expectations as it was primarily to dust the cobwebs off and secondly to enjoy the game. It came down to the last game to decide who took the trophy on offer. Belwest walked away the Heather Reid Trophy after steamrollering Gungahlin 4-0. A great team win.

Belwest Under 8 Stingrays Season Review The under 8 Stingrays had a core group of players who stuck together from the previous year. The boys had a great season and everyone developed their skills, confidence and friendships. Don’t tackle...your own team mate! Friday afternoon training sessions worked well as the boys had only one day to forget what they had learnt. Major areas of improvement included an understanding of team structures, passing to a player in space and don’t tackle your own team mate (although that is still a work in progress). Stingrays stung them. Apparently no one keeps score at the under 8 level but I have it on good authority that the Stingrays won about half their games throughout the season. A quick summary of the team is as follows Rhino – The immovable force with the ball at his feet, learnt how to pass towards the end of season.

U8 Stingrays

Kian – Scored goal of the year whilst mum had her back turned helping out in the canteen, one of the most improved throughout the season.

The boys had a great season and everyone developed their skills, confidence and friendships.

Belwest Under 8 Stingrays Season Review (cont) Joshua – Goal scoring machine who covered more ground then a blue heeler. Ben – The teams utility player, played every position extremely well. Nathan – Self appointed team striker and the main reason everyone has to wear shin pads. Jack – Defensive rock number one. Almost impassable (when he was watching the ball). Ethan – Defensive rock number two. Contender for most improved. Ryan – Kicking improved immensely throughout the season, occasionally forgot he was playing football and took some great marks. Sam – Team clown who set the record for most laps at training for not listening. Also a great goal keeper. Hayden – Had a great year and improved out of sight. Could be in trouble when the offside rule gets enforced.

Team structures look good on paper

Gungahlin is the coldest place on earth

We’re coming back! Success is measured not through wins and losses but by the level of improvement and the size of the smiles of the boys faces. We had a great year. Bring on next season. Regards Joint coaches – Andrew and Damian

Belwest gets the thumbs up!

Under 11 Girls Green Goslings With most of the girls being underage the competition was always going to be a challenge but the girls proved more than capable of matching it with the older teams. Annie - the best keeper in the league Several of the girls shared the goal keeping duties throughout the season but most games saw Annie between the posts for half a game and she was far and away the best goalkeeper in the competition – her skill was often commented on by opposition coaches and her aggressive saves cleaned up many tricky situations. Amy proved herself capable in both defence and midfield and her dribbling skills often got the team out of tight spots. Her goal keeping showed great improvement and she managed a “clean sheet” in her last 3 games in goal. Our youngest player Alyssa made the right back position her own and she didn’t hesitate to take on girls more than 2 years older. It was great to see her confidence grow over the season and she was making great clearances towards the end of the season. The team fortunes really took a positive turn when Shannon decided her favoured position was centre back. Her courage and aggression really took the challenge to her opponents and her clearances through to the midfield and forwards often resulted in us mounting a counter-attack.

Under 11 Girls Green Goslings (cont) Kearah also spent a lot of time in defence and it really helped the team having someone so fast and fit at the back – the team relied on Kearah a lot, particularly late in the second half – as the team tired Kearah seemed to increase her workload to cover for the weary players. Midfielders Persia and Aliesha worked hard The midfield is where a lot of hard work is put in and every week Persia and Aliesha ran until they had absolutely nothing left. Persia would always give 100% each Saturday, constantly pressuring the opposition. Towards the end of the season it was obvious to all how her skill had improved with the ease in which she was winning the ball and still managing to get good passes to her team mates. Great Talent Aliesha has a great talent for passing and many times she set up attacking runs for our forwards with great passes through the opposition defence. Never one to get flustered she managed to stay calm no matter how intense the match became. Also spending a lot of time in midfield was Tahlia, whose combination of speed and determination proved a huge hurdle for the opposition. As the season progressed so did she, and towards the end of the season she displayed really good ball control and was one of the key players in our win in the final game.

ActewAGL Capital Football Junior League Play of the Day - June Winner is Belwest’s Toni Dodd. Well done and thanks Toni from all at Belwest.

Under 11 Girls Green Goslings (cont) Kasey proved very versatile. Playing in goals, defence midfield and forward and many times we needed to rely on her speed and strength. It was really pleasing to see her score the final goal of the season with a calm pass into the net. The team really missed Rena when she went overseas for a large part of the season. Her speed and calm passing were crucial in helping the team progress at the start of the season and it was great to have her back for the last game of the season to help us to a convincing win over a team that had beaten us twice during the season. Too Easy One of our regular forwards was Zoe, who also helped out in midfield and defence when needed. At times it almost seemed too easy for her as she ran through the opposition time after time and scored goals for the team no matter where she was on the field. Monique also spent a lot of the season up front and scored many goals with her great finishing ability. Never one to stand around, she would frequently drop back into the midfield to help when things got tough. Most of the team will still be eligible to play under 11 again next year and if they choose to do so I am sure they will be able to dominate the competition. It has been a pleasure to coach the girls this season. Greg Smith, Coach

U13 Division 2 Newly promoted from Division 3 after being crowned 2012 champions, we expected this year to present a much greater challenge. Dynamic young Coach We were coached by our Assistant Coach from last year, Chris Rogers, a dynamic young coach with a great love for the game and the ability to inspire his charges. He was ably supported by our coach for the previous two years, Harry Leins, who continues to have an ongoing interest in the team. We lost some players from the 2012 side but gained three new team members in Riley, Sam and Bul. The other members of the team are Zane, Lucy, Raul, Josh, Fraser, Connor, Parsa, Gordon, Seth, Cormac, David and Jonas. Preparation paid off We trained early and hard in pre-season including a trial game against Majura U15 Girls. This preparation paid off and we started the season in fine style, winning our first four games and scoring 32 goals in the process! We faltered slightly in Round 5 with a draw against Woden Valley on a very cold, wet and windy day, but hit back in the following rounds with two more wins against Belnorth and Belsouth before losing to our arch rivals Canberra Grammar in Round 8.

Belwest - 31 Years of the Fox

U13 Division 2 Open - Preparation paid off.

Fantastic Result

U13 Div 2 (cont) Must defeat Canberra Grammar From that point we won four games on the trot including two massive 11-0 victories in Rounds 12 and 13 against Woden and Belnorth. Unfortunately, one bad game against Belsouth in Round 14 meant we had to defeat Canberra Grammar in Round 15 to stay in contention to win the competition. Classic “Battle of Red Hill” This classic ‘Battle of Red Hill’ saw the lead change several times as the teams exchanged goal for goal. We finally hit the lead half way through the second half and looked on course for a victory before Grammar struck back with minutes to go to level the score. They went further ahead shortly after and then with seconds on the clock we regained possession but before Bul could complete his shot the whistle blew and the game ended with the ball hitting the back of the net. The final score was 5-4 to Grammar. Final game to secure second place Our final game was played at Latham against Monaro Panthers and we had to win to secure second place. A loss combined with an unlikely win by Belsouth over Canberra Grammar would mean third place.

Belwest - 31 Years of the Fox

The result was a fantastic 6-1 win and we finished second with 31 points just behind Grammar on 35 and level with Belsouth (who did beat Canberra Grammar) but ahead courtesy of a superior goal difference. 100 Goals During the course of the game we racked up our 100th goal of the season over the 16 rounds. In total we scored 102 goals (way more than any other team) and conceded only 34, a team average of 6 goals per game. Brilliant defence The defence was also brilliant only conceding an average of 2 goals per game. Scorers for the season were Bul (40), Parsa (34), Zane (10), Riley (10), Jonas (2), Lucy (2) and one each to David, Raul, Seth and Fraser. Congratulations to all players and our wonderful coaches for another terrific year! See you all again in 2014. Richard Maclean (Manager)

I’d like to pay homage to the hard work and dedication by all the Coaches; from the Pee Wees up to the Juniors, Boys & Girls. Hi Belwest family, The 2013 season is over and I thought it would be nice to let the Belwest family know how successful the women’s teams have been this season. A pre-premiership competition was conducted in March in which a Belwest women’s team competed and won coming away with the first silverware for the Club…Heather Reid Trophy. All eyes then turned to the season proper which kicked off in April and Belwest had one women’s team competing in each of the following divisions…SL1, SL3 and SL4. After a long season it was pleasing to have all three teams make it thru to the semi-finals. (cont on next page) Belwest SL1 Grand Final Runners-Up

Belwest SL4 2013 Grand Final Winners and League Champions

All three games in the semi-finals were very tight with all three going into extra time and two to penalty shoot outs. The teams to survive these tussles and proceed to the Grand Finals were SL1 and SL4. Again tight games, as you would expect in grand finals, with SL4 being victorious (5-3) and SL1 going down 1-0 in extra time. To cap off the SL4’s tremendous season they were also crowned League Champions along with two players sitting in1st and 2nd position for top goal scorers for the division. Would you like to join and play with this great bunch in 2014? Belwest welcomes players of all levels and abilities. Training is conducted on Tuesday and/or Thursday from 6.30pm till 8pm at Scullin Oval. Contact details and commencement date of training will be announced thru the website early in 2014. Cheers, Kerrie Murray.

Belwest Men’s State League 5 Review After battling with Capital Football over the course of many weeks of pre-season, it was eventually decided that the 5’s would actually play in Division 5 as requested! The goal for the season was to get to the Grand Final, but I’ll get to that later… The early season form was excellent, reminiscent of the total football played by the great Dutch side of the 70’s. A come from behind 2-1 victory against Narrabundah got us on our way, more wins followed including the 9-0 demolition of Tuggeranong – we don’t like those southsiders! But clearly the match of the first half of the season was the 5-1 victory at home to Canberra FC. A game played on a cold, wet and windy Charny pitch, but so could easily have taken place in a Los Vegas ring on a big fight night. Two red cards for them only tells a small part of the story, but a committed, solid and composed performance by the 5’s sent them packing and they were soon to be withdrawn from the league. The momentum was maintained through the second half of the season, with impressive wins against Gungahlin, Weston and Belconnen Utd but unfortunately we lost our grip on First place as Canberra City eventually overcame us in the closing weeks of the season. Into the finals and a defeat to City left us up against our old foes ANU in the playoff for the final. In a match that will going down in 5’s folk law, we lead 2-1 but then conceded a penalty! The Wall naturally saved it, but was unlucky late on to conceded the equaliser taking the game into extra time. Penalties followed and trailing 2-1 on the count things did not look good, but then again we had The Wall. Two more penalty saves in the shoot out gave us victory by the narrowest of margins. As for the final – what a game, but sadly it was a game too far. With the gods clearly against us, we just could not score. At half time the scoresheet read Belwest 0 – 5 Woodwork. Yes we smashed the post and the bar 5 times in the first half, not to mention their goalkeeper pulling off a couple of fine saves. The second half followed suit, with us hitting the post once more, but then the red mist descended, as a professional foul was needed to stop City in a rare flurry forward. They scored the resulting free kick and then got another on the break to leave us licking out wounds in a one sided 2-0 defeat. Overall it was a fantastic season, each team member contributing both on and off the field. One thing we can be sure of at the end of the season…. Foxy the Fox will rise again in 2014 Andy Batstone

Belwest - 31 Years of the Fox

Belwest Men’s State League 7 Review It was another great season for Div 7. Coming off the back of our memorable winning championship campaign in season 2012, there was a lot of confidence that we could repeat the feat. After Capital Football again moved the deck chairs, we found ourselves back in Div 7 but it was a much bigger competition, 14 teams split into two pools of 7. We had many returning players this year which was great to see, but also managed to pick up some great ‘new’ blood as well. We saw the emergence of the great Scot Billy Brooks, the return of Lewis Kemp to the fold, after a season with the Div 5 guys, and finally Peter Davis (aka headlock), Steven Ward (aka Docker), Chris Rogers, Andy MacDonald (the beard) and Nathan Snyders. Special mention also goes to Josh Roberts who lasted only a couple of games before his knees gave out. The season itself gave a number of highlights: - a tiny ANU striker thinking he could tangle with Master keeper Scott Butler (pretty sure you can guess who came off second best); - a memorable come from behind victory against Monaro, pretty sure the ref had something to do with that one; and - a couple of fantastic road trips to Gundaroo and Yass. Overall we completed the regular season impressively with only 3 losses (2 against ANU in our pool and 1 against Yass in the other pool). We finished second in our pool, in fact 2nd out of all 14, which ensured we had a shot at the semi-final against Tuggeranong. A brilliant last gasp goal from Lewis cemented our place in the decider against Yass. The Grand Final was one of the best games I’ve been witness to. We knew either way we would be seated against a former 2012 Div 5 team (Yass or ANU), so top form would be required. An early goal to Yass then the first dubious penalty given late in the half saw us two nil down at half time despite the majority of the half controlled by us. Second half saw us fight back regaining control and scoring three times to take the lead 3 – 2 with 13min to go. We were in a great position to repeat our success from the previous year until another dubious penalty was awarded to Yass, effectively tying the game up and sending us into extra time. A scoreless extra time meant we headed to penalties and sadly we came second in that race, despite some brilliant saves from Scotty. Special mention goes to our supporters this year, who have had an awesome presence at our matches, also Mick (who ‘ volunteered’ to drive us for our Gundaroo and Yass games). Lastly, thanks again to Coach Adam and Manager Caffs for keeping us organised and inspired!
