IDA KOHLMEYER American/New Orleans, 1912-1997

Neal Auction has played an important role in developing the marketplace for works by beloved New Orleans artist Ida Kohlmeyer. Kohlmeyer graduated with a master’s degree in drawing and painting from Newcomb Art School in 1956 and studied in New York with the abstract expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. Hofmann had a significant impact on Kohlmeyer’s work, encouraging her to abandon figurative painting in favor of abstraction. The artist’s iconic abstract paintings are rooted in her own distinctive visual language of various shapes and symbols and characterized by exuberance of color and motion. Neal Auction holds the current record price for the artist of $110,250 achieved for “Cluster #1” in September of 2015. Ida Kohlmeyer (1912-1997), “Vase with Flowers,” 1987, mm/wood, h. 30 in. $20,740

José Francisco Xavier de Salazar y Mendoza

1.

Jose Francisco Salazar (1750-1802), “Likely Sebastián Calvo de la Puerta y O’Farrill, Marqués de Casa Calvo (1751-1820),” o/c, 42 x 32 3/4 in. $249,750

Over of period of twenty years, José Francisco Xavier de Salazar y Mendoza created likenesses of some of the most prominent Louisiana citizens of the late 18th and early 19th century. Known Salazar works include paintings of bishops, governors, mayors, military officials, and wealthy planters – most of whom were interconnected through business transactions or familial contacts in the vast web of colonial Louisiana society. The men and women he painted lived during a fascinating time in Louisiana history, residing first in Spanish Colonial territory during the turn of the 19th century, then observing the transition of the Louisiana Territory from Spain to France, and finally to America with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Neal Auction holds the world record price for the artist of $519,000 for his portrait of “Major General James Wilkinson (1757-1825)” sold in November of 2013.
