Neal Auction is pleased to present the entire contents of Ida Manheim Antiques, 409 Royal Street.
Ida Manheim was born into the antiques business. She is the third generation of the Manheim family of antiquarians. Her grandfather, Bernard Manheim, emigrated from Austria to New Orleans at the turn of the last century, opening an antique gallery and small cabinet shop at 409 Royal, Manheim Galleries, in 1919. Her father, Abe Manheim, joined Bernard in the family business. As a child of nine, Ida began accompanying her father on European buying trips; she would join the firm fulltime as a young woman.
The Manheim family, through Manheim Galleries and later Ida Manheim Antiques, have catered to an international following of discriminating buyers for over 100 years. With her exceptional knowledge, Ida provided a clientele of serious collectors, foreign dignitaries and famous celebrities an unparalleled experience.

Louis Bosworth Hurt was born in 1856 in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England. The son of a tailor, Hurt began his career as an apprentice draper, only painting in his spare time under the tutelage of landscapist, George Turner and his son William Lakin Turner. Eventually he became a full-time painter and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy at twenty-four years of age.
Hurt was known for his hazy, romantic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, often including the region’s famous Highland cattle, as in the lot offered here which features a herd making its way down a winding beaten path with magnificent foggy peaks recessed in the distant horizon. Hurt’s ability to accurately depict the majesty of the terrain and its inhabitants is well captured in the luminous, wispy clouds and detailed vegetation as well as the realism with which he paints the scruffy and beleaguered cattle.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State College for Women and Master of Arts degree in art education from the University of Mississippi. She studied at the William Fisher Gallery in New York, the summer art colonies in Kennebunkport, Maine and the Penland School in North Carolina, as well as at various workshops sponsored by the Mississippi Art Colony. Montjoy’s mentors included Ida Kohlmeyer, Alvin Sella, Andrew Bucci, Bill Rowell, Malcolm Norwood and particularly Marie Hull. Together, she and Hull were instrumental in recognizing the work of Walter Anderson through significant acquisitions by the Mississippi Art Association. In 1975, Montjoy was one of nine organizers of the Friends of Walter Anderson, a group dedicated to assuring the preservation and recognition of Anderson’s work. This organization played an important role in establishing the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
Montjoy’s own artwork was noted for its innovation and exploration in different media. She frequently exhibited in competitive shows in the South and won a large number of awards. Her many one-person shows included the Mississippi Art Association’s presentation in 1971 of “Recent Paintings by Merle Tennyson,” which produced considerable interest as it featured her series of “Fan” paintings, as well as five acclaimed stylized portraits. In speaking of the “Fan” series in 1974, Charles M. Grass of the Art Department of the University of Mississippi stated: “They are the best series of paintings that I have seen done by a Mississippian.”

Note: Before publishing her first story, Eudora Welty was an accomplished photographer. Throughout the 1930s and early 1940s, Welty gathered a body of work remarkable for her choice of subjects and ability to put them at ease. The images depict the everyday lives of Mississippians at the height of the Depression. In early 1936, Welty was featured in a one-woman show of forty-five photographs at Lugene Opticians in New York. That same summer, Welty published her first short story, “Death of a Traveling Salesman,” and became a publicity agent, junior grade, for the WPA in Mississippi. Welty traveled throughout the state’s backroads, small towns and rural areas to write articles about WPA projects for community weeklies, snapping pictures along the way. Although taking pictures was not part of her official WPA tasks, the experience helped chart Welty’s literary life. She is quoted in 1989: “In snapping these pictures I was acting completely on my own, though I’m afraid it was on their time; they have nothing to do with the WPA. But the WPA gave me the chance to travel, to see widely and at close hand and really for the first time the nature of the place I’d been born into. And it gave me the blessing of showing me the real State of Mississippi, not the abstract state of the Depression.”
In 1992, Welty combed through the negatives of the photographs she took during the Depression and hand-selected eighteen to best represent this era of her work. She collaborated with Diogenes Editions in Jackson to create a limited run of only sixty portfolios, many of which have since been separated. The rare, complete portfolio offered here is particularly notable in that it is number one of the sixty and has an impressive exhibition history, having been exhibited in the Old Capitol Museum rotunda in Jackson in 1992 and at the Vicksburg Art Association Old Firehouse Gallery later that same year. Additionally, Welty herself worked with the talented Pelahatchie-based master woodworker Bob Willis to carefully design the frames for this set from native white oak with wenge accents to reflect the era in which the photos were taken. The frames were hand-crafted and cut to resemble depression-era furniture.

Note: Once proclaimed “King of the Hippies,” Reverend Michael “Mike” Stark (1939-1998) moved to New Orleans from Texas in 1962 to attend the Baptist Theological Seminary. By the mid-1960s, he had made a permanent home in the French Quarter where he was a fixture on the local scene over the next thirty years. He founded or co-founded a dozen or more different projects benefiting the community, including a street ministry for young people that operated a free medical clinic and Baptist mission. In 1982, he established the Mask Market as part of his New Orleans Mask Makers Guild, which helped to promote and support local mask artists. During the World’s Fair of 1984 in New Orleans, Stark operated a shop called the Exposed Flea, just outside the fair’s perimeter, and later with a young business partner, Ann Guccione, and others he owned a mask shop in the French Quarter with a worldwide following called the Little Shop of Fantasy.
In his early days in the French Quarter, Stark was part of a group of bohemians who gravitated around Preservation Hall, where he worked the door and inevitably met the famous artist Noel Rockmore who became a close friend. “He [Stark] loved to dress up,” according to Jo Ann Clevenger (2011) in whose Decatur Street costume shop Stark also worked. The gay former Baptist minister was known for wearing color kaftans and often a hat or headpiece. Rockmore depicts him in this distinctive attire in the significant and near life-size portrait offered here. Seated against backdrop of French Quarter rooftops in a colorful chair and with a pensive expression, Stark embodies the bohemian vibe for which he was known. A classic and colorful New Orleans personality, Stark’s legacy of activism reverberates in the French Quarter to this day.

Note: Rise Delmar-Ochsner was born and raised in New York City where her mother was an artist. She graduated from Columbia University and later attended Tulane Medical School as one of only a handful of women accepted under the ten percent quota of the time. In New Orleans, she became a successful ophthalmologist and kept a thriving practice until becoming a full-time artist.
She discovered her own love of art while at Columbia and continued to paint through medical school and beyond. An in-demand portraitist, Ochsner earned commissions to paint Mick Jagger for a poster for his New Orleans tour stop, Carol Burnett’s cat and fifty famous chefs including Leah Chase, Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer on behalf of Robert and Margrit Mondavi, all winners of the Robert Mondavi Culinary Award of Excellence.
As stated in her obituary from February of this year: “Rise achieved things that were both extremely difficult and extremely rare in her own time, not to mention impossible to imagine replicating today... Rise was never constrained by society’s conventions, glass ceiling, or personal tragedies.” It was only fitting that Ochsner, a remarkable woman, was commissioned to paint this striking and colorful portrait of the poised and equally notable Queen Noor of Jordan.
Born Lisa Halaby to an Arab American family, she was a member of the first class at Princeton that included women in 1969 and received a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning. She worked on urban planning projects internationally and was a well-accomplished professional when she married King Hussein of Jordan in 1978. They stayed together until his tragic passing in 1999. In 1985, Queen Noor founded the Noor Al Hussein Foundation and later the King Hussein Foundation in 1999. “The non-profit non-governmental organizations which Queen Noor chairs were influenced by her innovative, holistic approaches to regional development challenges… the foundations’ programs have advanced development thinking in Jordan and the Middle East through pioneering best practice models in the fields of poverty eradication, women and youth empowerment, microfinance, health, and arts as a medium for social development and cross-cultural exchange. They provide training and capacity-building expertise in these areas in the broader Arab and Asian regions.”

Provenance: The Rodrigue Gallery, New Orleans, 1992.
Provenance: The Rodrigue Gallery, New Orleans, 1992. Note: In 1990 George Rodrigue filled his New Orleans gallery with Blue Dog paintings for Super Bowl XXIV, attracting the attention of both collectors and the national media. These early paintings in the series originated from and still bore striking similarity to their loup-garou predecessors, with textured fur and a light blue-grey color. The Blue Dog remained within the Louisiana landscape of Rodrigue’s Cajun series; however, he began for the first time to think of them as something outside of the bayous and swamps. While in many ways harkening to the visual vocabulary of his Cajun series and previous loupgarou paintings, these first Blue Dogs allowed the artist the opportunity to expand his experimentation with color, shape, texture, meaning and oftentimes humor.
A phenomenon had truly begun. The Blue Dog paintings from the early 1990s, such as “Good Morning Blues” of 1991 offered here, represent a brief, but highly important, transitional moment for Rodrigue - bridging the Cajun series and Blue Dog series. The golden glow of the sunrise illuminating the strong, dark shapes of the oak trees perfectly highlights the dominating Blue Dog and the swirling brushstrokes of the rich foreground – a captivating combination of classic Rodrigue elements at their very best.
