May 12 Commencement was well-attended by Graduates and their Families and Friends
It may have been a hot and humid May day, but our hearts were warm with happiness as we celebrated our students at the 2023 Commencement. This year we had 353 students participate in the ceremony. Our second highest in NDSCS history. It was truly an exciting day for the entire NDSCS Wildcat Family. Commencement is not just an event put on by the Registrar’s Office, it requires the assistance from every department across campus. While the event is to celebrate our graduating students, it is also time to reflect on our hard work to get them to this day.
From the Registrar, Mike Paolini: thank to all of those who volunteered and assisted in making this commencement ceremony one to remember. Go Wildcats!

Special Commencement held to Celebrate Softball Players
During their time cheering the Wildcats on at the National Tournament, President Flanigan and his wife, Michele, were able to talk with many of the student athletes about their experience at NDSCS. Nearly every one of the players wished they could have attended the Commencement ceremony, finalizing their education at NDSCS. At least one of the players is a first-generation college grad. Another player was a 2020 high school graduate who didn’t get to have a ceremony at that time.
President Flanigan decided that since they missed the May 12th NDSCS commencement ceremony due to qualifying for the National tournament, the eight graduating softball players deserved a special commencement ceremony to honor their academic accomplishments.
The special ceremony was held on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Gayle Miller Softball Field on the NDSCS campus. Family and friends of the athletes, along with numerous faculty and staff attended the ceremony that was planned and put on by the President and his wife, Michele.

NDSCS Softball becomes the first-ever National Championship team in NDSCS history
NDSCS Softball team became Region XIII champions for 3rd consecutive year, and then won the DIII World Series, becoming NDSCS’s first-ever National Championship team.
After an impressive win against Anoka-Ramsey College on Friday, May 12th, the Wildcats Softball team became back-to-back-to-back Region XIII Champions. Some students were slated to graduate that day, but instead of walking across the stage for their diploma, they received a different kind of award – an NJCAA Region XIII championship plaque.
NJCAA said “You had to see it to believe it!” NDSCS fans, from College employees, students, alumni, families, and other friends were all cheering as those who couldn’t attend were able to watch the game online through the NJCAA Network. NDSCS is proud of the tenacity and grit of the team that brought home the first National championship in school history!
Read more about their season here.
Following that win, they were ready to head to the DIII World Series in DeWitt, NY on May 24-27. The Wildcats entered the championship series as the number 1 seed. The team played a total of 6 games during the series, with a 5-1 record. Fortunately, during the final day of the tournament, NDSCS Wildcats beat the Corning Red Barons TWICE back-to-back to win the National Championship title! The first game was won with a score of 11-4, and the second game came down to the bottom of the 7th inning, where the Wildcats rallied and scored 6 runs to win the game!
News outlets are calling this one of the biggest comebacks in college softball history! Of the rally, the

Electrical Technology and Barnard Hall celebrated 100 years at NDSCS on May 12 – 13
Article submitted by Denise Laymon
The smiles were plentiful, and the lobby of the Hektner Student Center echoed with laughter, shoutouts, and welcomes as 250 alumni, faculty, staff, and business partners began to register on Friday, May 12th for the North Dakota State College of Science Electrical Department and Barnard Hall 100th Anniversary.
Graduation followed early-bird registration Friday afternoon as the 100th graduating class received their diplomas and for the first time joined the 100th Anniversary event as alumni. These young graduates had the opportunity to visit with generations of electrical graduates who were still in the workforce or have retired.
Friday evening a social was held at the City Brew Hall where Kim Nelson was the Master of Ceremony and entertained the audience with some electrical history and introductions, but most rememberable were her electrical jokes.
Ivan Maas greeted attendees at the Saturday morning breakfast as Master of Ceremony sharing
a presentation on the past 100 years. Arden R. Helland, ’58 Alumnus captured the attention of the audience sharing his expertise and recapping the years of electrical advancements that have been made.
Saturday afternoon was filled with campus tours, family picnic and activities, music, group photo, ice cream social, and conversation. We were delighted to see that face painting was for big kids also. Yoney Fobb opened the evening as Master of Ceremony. NDSCS was honored to have North Dakota Lt. Governor, Tammy Miller, as the keynote speaker. Lt. Governor Miller shared the importance of the electrical
