The Alumni Review is an official publication of the North Dakota State College of Science Alumni Foundation, 800 6th St. N., Wahpeton, ND 58076. It is mailed to NDSCS alumni, friends, business and industry partners, government agencies, educational partners, and legislative leaders. All efforts are made to ensure accuracy of this original publication.

Unwavering

At NDSCS, we know what it means to be unwavering. Through change, challenge, and celebration, this Foundation—your Foundation—has stood strong in its mission: to support students, empower faculty, and strengthen the future of NDSCS. That strength is no accident. It comes from decades of consistent leadership, faithful giving, and a proud alumni base that believes in the power of education to transform lives.

As I step into the role of Executive Director, I want to begin by thanking Kim Nelson. Her steady, visionary leadership built the strong foundation we now stand upon. Kim led with grace, professionalism, and a tireless commitment to NDSCS. I am honored to carry that torch forward—unwavering in my belief that our best days are ahead. We are seeing remarkable growth in our endowments, scholarships, and alumni engagement. And we’re just getting started. With a new challenge grant underway and bold goals for the coming year, we are building the next chapter with focus and energy. My team and I are ready—ready to listen, to lead, and to serve.

I bring to this work a confident, seasoned leadership style shaped by decades in advancement and executive management. But I also bring something more personal: a genuine passion for

people. That’s why I’ll be hitting the road—visiting communities, shaking hands, sharing stories, and hearing yours. If we haven’t met yet, we will soon. I want to connect with as many alumni as possible, because this Foundation is not just about dollars and data—it’s about relationships. And relationships, when rooted in trust and purpose, are unwavering

Together, with your support, we will continue to grow, to give, and to guide. The future is bright. The mission is clear. And our resolve? Unwavering.

With gratitude and Wildcat pride,

Celebrating a Legacy: Terry Marohl’s Journey at NDSCS

North Dakota State College of Science prepares to bid farewell to a remarkable leader and educator, Terry Marohl, who will retire after over three decades of dedicated service. Among his many influential roles as the Associate Dean of Transportation, Terry has shaped the futures of countless students through his oversight of diverse programs including Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, Auto Body Repair and Refinishing Technology, and Powersports Technology.

Terry’s journey into teaching at NDSCS began in 1992 when he returned to his alma mater as a General Diesel Instructor after graduating from the Diesel Technology program in 1981. His impact over the past 33 years has been transformative, not only for the students he taught but also for the programs he nurtured. Under his guidance, the Diesel Technology program grew into a powerhouse, boasting partnerships with leading manufacturers such as John Deere, Case IH, Caterpillar, and Komatsu, among others.

Building Strong Partnerships

One of Terry’s most significant accomplishments has been the development and growth of industrysponsored programs. He recognized early on that the success of technical education depends on strong relationships with business and industry partners. By involving industry leaders in curriculum development and providing students with

real-world experience on brand-specific equipment, Terry has ensured that NDSCS’s Diesel Technology programs remain on the cutting edge.

The success of these partnerships is evident in the achievements of the students they support. NDSCS students have excelled in national competitions such as SkillsUSA, Colorado Top Tech Skills Competition, and the selection of an NDSCS student for WorldSkills 2024 by SkillsUSA. These milestones not only highlight the students’ talents but also underscore the effectiveness of the programs at NDSCS.

A Legacy of Growth and Sustainability

Terry’s impact extends beyond individual accomplishments; it reflects a broader vision for sustainability and growth within the academic programs. With a current enrollment of over 300 students across the transportation programs, Terry has worked tirelessly to create an environment where students can thrive. As he prepares for retirement, he leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication—a testament to how he has put people at the heart of the educational experience. Terry’s philosophy has always been to “start small and grow larger.” With the expansion of the Bisek building and the continuous improvement of the programs, he has shown that success is built on a strong foundation of innovation and collaboration. Advisory committees

under his guidance have played a crucial role in aligning the program with industry needs, ensuring that students receive training that is relevant and effective.

Family, Community, and Future Aspirations

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Terry is a devoted family man. He shares his life with his wife, Carmen Marohl, a Financial Aid Associate at NDSCS. Together, they have raised three grown children and enjoy spending time with their four grandchildren. As he looks forward to retirement, Terry envisions completing several long-overdue projects and embracing the role of a grandfather, a title he is eager to embrace fully.

Terry Marohl’s retirement in 2025 marks a celebration of a remarkable career defined by passion, dedication, and a profound impact on the lives of students and the future of technical education. His legacy at NDSCS will inspire generations of educators and students alike, demonstrating the power of industry partnerships in shaping a brighter future for technical programs. As he embarks on this new chapter, we honor Terry not just as an educator but as a visionary leader whose contributions have transformed the college and the communities it serves.

As we celebrate Terry’s contributions and the ongoing successes of the Diesel Technology programs, we also look to the future with confidence —ready to build on the strong foundation he has laid.

Thank you, Terry, for your unwavering commitment and passion for education. Here’s to a bright future!

Agriculture and Diesel Expansion Updates

The newly renovated Yaggie Family Agriculture Center is nearing completion, with members of the class of 2025 already utilizing the facilities during the spring semester. This summer, final enhancements will be made, along with preparations for the Kosel Family Lab, which will be ready for the Agriculture department following the completion of the Bisek Hall John Deere expansion project in December.

More than just a renovation, this center stands as a tribute to the generous contributions of the Yaggie family and Linda Kosel Patterson. It represents a lasting foundation for agricultural education and innovation at NDSCS. President Dr. Rod Flanigan remarked, “This transformative donation pays homage to the family’s deep-rooted commitment to agriculture and education. The Yaggie and Patterson gifts are a testament to their belief in the future of agriculture and the pivotal role of education in our community.”

The Yaggie Family Agriculture Center and Kosel Family Lab will enhance the visibility of the NDSCS Precision Agriculture program and support its growth by integrating cutting-edge technology and hands-on learning experiences for students.

This renovation included updates to all

classrooms, labs, shops, and offices, as well as relocating the John Deere Diesel program to make room for Precision Agriculture equipment training. Nearly $500,000 has been invested in precision agriculture tools, equipment, and simulators to provide students with ample opportunities for applied learning. The expansion also introduces both an animal science and soils labs, broadening the college’s offerings across the agricultural spectrum.

“We are profoundly grateful for the generosity of the Yaggie family and Linda Kosel Patterson,” stated Kim Nelson, retiring Executive Director of the NDSCS Foundation. “This gift empowers us to enhance our agricultural programs and reinforces our commitment to shaping the next generation of agricultural professionals.”

Matthew Hallaway, the new Executive Director, added, “This project is a significant step forward for our institution. It will not only improve our facilities but also heighten the learning experience for our students, ensuring they are well-equipped for the challenges of modern agriculture.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled at a later date. For updates, visit NDSCSalumni.com.

Supporting Our Students

The NDSCS Alumni Foundation hosted two successful Scholarship Luncheons last fall, connecting students with their generous scholarship donors. We truly enjoy celebrating gratitude and generosity at these invite-only events. A heartfelt thank you to all the donors who attended in person, providing students with the wonderful opportunity to meet you! If you’re considering starting a scholarship or an endowment, don’t hesitate to reach out to Denise Laymon at 701-671-2131 or Yoney Fobb at 701-671-2486.

We Met in Arizona

We had an amazing experience in sunny Mesa, Arizona, where we shared exciting updates from NDSCS with small groups and at the ND Community Foundation Picnic. Our theme, “What’s Cookin’ at NDSCS,” was a resounding success! We loved reconnecting with familiar friends while forging new connections, all in celebration of NDSCS.

Alumni and supporters came to express their best wishes to retiring Executive Director Kim Nelson and to meet new Executive Director Matthew Hallaway. President Rod Flanigan and First Lady Michele were also in attendance to discuss the future of NDSCS.

We’re already looking forward to next year! Mark your calendars for the 2026 ND Community Foundation Picnic at Red Mountain Park in Mesa on March 1st. If you’re interested in hosting a small gathering during our visit, please contact Matthew Hallaway at 701-671-2480.

Honoring the Legacy of Dee Jensen and Lisa Beck-Howatt

In celebration of 50 years of Women’s Athletics at NDSCS, we proudly shine a spotlight on two former female trailblazers who have elevated the meaning of leaving a legacy through their achievements and ongoing support.

Dee Jensen joined NDSCS in 1974. Longtime teacher and coach, Dee has been a trailblazer in Wildcat athletic history. Alongside her late husband O.J. Jensen, she served as Women’s Track Coach from 1974-2002. Throughout her illustrious coaching career, Dee celebrated numerous achievements, including 10 NJCAA Region XIII championships, 41 All-Americans, 8 National champions, and 95 All-Region XIII athletes. Her excellence did not go unnoticed; she was named National Coach of the Year in 1986 and received the Region XIII Coach of the Year award nine times. In 2003, Dee and her colleagues established the O.J. Jensen Academic and Athletic Scholarship Endowment to provide annual scholarships for deserving student-athletes. More recently, in 2024, she played a pivotal role in founding the Women for NDSCS Endowment to enhance educational opportunities for women at NDSCS.

Lisa Beck-Howatt came to NDSCS to pursue a degree in accounting and excelled in track as co-captain of the 1982 Region XIII Championship Track and Field team. Lisa distinguished herself further by becoming both an Indoor and Outdoor National Champion in high jump for the Wildcats. After graduating, she and her husband Van Howatt found success farming in Langdon, N.D., and have remained dedicated supporters of NDSCS. As proud members of the Blikre Society, they have contributed significantly to projects, including the Stadium Drive. Lisa is recognized for her impact to NDSCS through the naming of the “Beck Gymnasium” on the upper level of the Clair T. Blikre Activities Center.

These inspiring women exemplify how athletics can create meaningful legacies that enrich future generations at NDSCS.

Performing Arts

Tilford Kroshus

Born in Spring Grove, Minn., Tilford Kroshus discovered his passion for music after moving to Valley City, where he attended Valley City College High School, a pioneering institution affiliated with a community college at the time. Following a brief period at Augsburg College, he returned to Valley City State College, where he majored in both music and history. It was there that Tilford met Mary, his “beautiful wife” and lifelong partner in education

Upon returning to the United States, Tilford and Mary taught in LaMoure, N.D., where Tilford started a marching band program. They later moved to Ellendale, where he taught for three years at the junior college branch of the University of North Dakota.

Tilford had revived both programs by the mid-1970s. Perhaps his most significant achievement was mentoring Laurie Lekang, who would go on to shape the program by starting a jazz program and converting the other music classes into a comprehensive transfer program for Liberal Arts, a legacy that persists today.

During his time at NDSCS, Tilford also founded the choral group known as the Wildcat Singers. His enthusiasm and love for music were instrumental in increasing student enrollment, and the Wildcat Singers quickly became ambassadors for the college.

After graduation, Tilford spent the first six years of his teaching career in Hannaford, N.D., where he taught music to students from grades 1 through 12. Shortly after their first year of teaching, Tilford and Mary tied the knot. After completing his master’s degree in Greeley, Colo., the couple embarked on their first major adventure, spending a year teaching in the village of Toquepala, Peru.

Friend of the College

Aasness Auctioneers

We are pleased to announce Cary and Anita Aasness Auctioneering as this year’s Friend of the College Distinguished Service Award Honorees. Since 2009, Cary, Anita, and their exceptional team have provided award-winning auction services as the lead auctioneers for the annual DREAMS Auction. Their expertise has consistently elevated the auction experience, making them a vital component of this successful event year after year.

Established in 1985 as a family business, Aasness Auctioneers has built a strong reputation for excellence in marketing and selling real estate, business assets, and personal property. The company’s approach combines proven sales methods with a commitment to innovation, integrity, and superior service

In 1969, Tilford and Mary settled in Wahpeton when he accepted a position as a music teacher at North Dakota State College of Science. The college president at the time, Clair T. Blikre, offered him a challenge: “If you can get people involved, I’ll get you some help.”

Recognizing that the band and choir programs were struggling due to dwindling interest, Tilford undertook a significant recruitment effort. One hundred choir members and eighty band members later,

He dedicated 28 years to teaching choral and band students at NDSCS before retiring in 1996. Laurie Lekang continued to lead the program until 2016.

Even in retirement, Tilford has remained active in music, captivating thousands of listeners in the area with his performances. In 2024, he was honored as “Wahpeton’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year,” a testament to his lasting impact on the community.

Family Tradition Sanders Family

The Sanders family legacy at NDSCS is one rooted in education, service, and strong community ties.

After graduating from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1955, Delray Sanders began farming alongside his dad and brother. He also worked as an Apprentice Printer for the Times newspaper before enrolling in the Printing Program at North Dakota State School of Science (NDSSS) in 1959. During his time on campus, Delray was actively involved in student life and was elected Student Cabinet President. After graduating from NDSSS in 1961, Delray went to work as a Linotype Operator for The Record Printing Company in Middle River, Minn.

While living in Middle River, Delray also owned and operated Delray’s Cafe and Sportsmen’s Club and was active in the Fire Department and Lions Club.

In 1963, Delray accepted a job at North Dakota State School of Science as Assistant Director of Public Relations. This position included working on all college publications, photography and college recruiting. During the summers, Delray earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Education with a major in Printing-Journalism. Using these new skills, Delray developed a photojournalism class for Graphic Arts students. He taught adult evening

photography classes, advised the Agawasie yearbook for 20 years, and coordinated high school yearbook camps.

In the Wahpeton community, Delray was active in The American Legion, Toastmasters, Bethel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Brotherhood Branch Officer, organized the Red River Photo Arts Club and participated in city volleyball, softball and tennis leagues. In his last ten years of his career at NDSCS, Delray transitioned to the role of Admissions Counselor and high school recruiter. Continuing to connect with students across the region.

Dan Kutter

Originally from Hankinson, N.D., Dan Kutter began his academic journey at North Dakota State College of Science in 2003, fueled by a strong interest in technology. Through NDSCS’s dual credit enrollment program, he got an early start on his college education while still in high school. He went on to earn degrees in Computer Information Systems and IT Forensics

& Cybersecurity, graduating in 2008.

During his time at NDSCS, Dan built lasting personal and professional connections that continue to influence his life and career. After graduation, he chose to stay in the Wahpeton area, where he founded Digital Guru, a managed service provider (MSP) that supports businesses across the region. As President of the company, Dan consistently recruits fellow NDSCS

the National Guard for 22 years, retiring as a First Sergeant.

The family’s NDSCS connection didn’t end with Delray. His son Ray Sanders earned a degree in Business Administration in 1987 and is a proud member of the Wildcats Letterwinners Club. He built a successful career at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and Medica and now owns Consolidated Benefits and Insurance Services in Fargo.

Delray’s daughter Lori and son-in-law Clint Howitz also attended NDSCS. Lori studied Business Management and now works as a Senior Administrative Assistant for Elk River Public Schools in Minnesota. Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson has been named the 2025 Alumnus of the Year in recognition of his longstanding commitment and impactful contributions to NDSCS. His ties to the college run deep—both of his parents were instructors at NDSCS: his father, Clifford, taught Welding, and his mother, Diana, taught Medical Records. A proud graduate, Chris completed the Machine Tooling program in 1976 and the Agriculture program in 1978. He has remained a devoted supporter of NDSCS, particularly through his involvement with the Agriculture program.

and its students. In 2004, he began giving as an annual club donor. Alongside his wife, Suzanne, and their family operation, C & S Farms, Chris has proudly continued this tradition for over two decades. Their establishment of the C & S Farms Endowment further demonstrates their commitment to student scholarships in Agriculture.

His support extends to fundraising, especially the annual DREAMS auction. In addition to donating high-value items, Chris fills tables with potential donors, covers their participation costs, serves as an auctioneer assistant, and secures gifts from numerous contacts. As an enthusiastic advocate for NDSCS across the state and region, he consistently promotes the college’s programs and mission.

Rooted in Richland County, where he has farmed his entire life, Chris maintains a strong connection to NDSCS and actively supports initiatives that benefit the college

Parade Grand Marshal

Harvey Link

Harvey Link, a native of Alexander, N.D., has dedicated nearly 45 years to advancing the mission of North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS). A respected educator, administrator, and advocate for student success, Harvey’s leadership has shaped generations of students and strengthened the institution in meaningful ways.

He holds bachelor’s degrees in agricultural education and animal science and a master’s in education from North Dakota State University, along with advanced graduate work in postsecondary administration at the University of Minnesota. After teaching in Park River, N.D., Harvey joined the NDSCS Agriculture department in 1978.

Over the years, he held several leadership roles including department chair, dean, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Interim President. Though he retired in July 2021, he returned twice—once as Interim President and later as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs. In May 2024, he was named NDSCS Vice President Emeritus.

As Vice President for Academic Affairs, Harvey championed transformative initiatives. He expanded access through online, dual credit, and remote-based learning—now key drivers of enrollment— and led curriculum redesigns to better align with workforce needs. He helped launch innovative programs like Pharmacy Technician, EMS and Paramedic, Registered Nursing, Meat Processing, UAS, Precision Agriculture, and RAMT.

Harvey also led efforts to secure federal and state grant funding, helping establish the NDSCS Grants Management Office. Under his leadership, the College received support from the National Science Foundation, Department of Education, Department of Labor, and various state and private sources.

Given these outstanding contributions and his steadfast dedication to enhancing student experiences at NDSCS, Chris Johnson is a deserving recipient of the 2025 Alumnus of the Year honor. His generosity and advocacy embody the spirit of this institution and continue to shape its future.

Chris and Suzanne are proud parents of three daughters: Kaytlyn Johnson, Courtney Walsh and her husband Nate, and grandson Teddy, and Sydney Johnson.

A longtime advocate for Career and Technical Education, Harvey has testified before Congress and the North Dakota Legislature and presented nationally. He served as national president of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), led the North Dakota Vocational Association, and earned numerous awards, including the North Dakota Leadership Award, ACTE Region V Hall of Fame, the NDSCS Commitment to Excellence Award, and the NDSCS Quality Service Medallion.

Harvey and his wife Gale—an educator and lifelong partner in service— established and continue to support the Arthur and Grace Link Endowment Fund for Faculty Professional Development. Harvey also served over 15 years on the CHI St. Francis Hospital Board of Directors and Audit Committee.

Today, he remains a dedicated ambassador for NDSCS, active in college events and a source of mentorship and guidance. He and Gale are proud parents of three NDSCS alumni and grandparents to six.

We are honored to recognize Harvey Link as the 2025 Parade Grand Marshal. His extraordinary service, leadership, and heartfelt commitment to NDSCS embody the Wildcat spirit.

Her commitment, leadership, and vision led to her appointment as the Executive Director of the NDSCS Alumni Foundation in 2016. After 23 years of dedicated service, Kim plans to retire in fall 2025 to enjoy more time at Big McDonald Lake with her husband, Brian.

Kim and Brian were married in 2009 and share a blended family of five
