ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR

The best part of creating the Annual Report…looking back on the amazing year that was. FY 21-22 truly saw some incredible things from our communities, our members and our staff.
Like any business, we often have a lengthy ‘To-Do’ list. Our parking lot of projects to come can sometimes feel daunting. But in the past year, the number of long-term projects coming to fruition was numerous.
Our Slip SimulatorTM was installed after years of working to fund and create a curriculum for this piece of equipment that we know can change lives. Falls remain one of the deadliest incidents not just in the workplace, but in our homes and communities. We have long felt it was a growing edge for our company, and now we are set and ready to teach before winter hits.
Our Ag Trailer, which has been a passion project for many on our NDSC team, is getting closer to completion. Countless hours have been put into the design and development of the trailer itself. Our work to make this a hands-on experience continues to excite us here at the Safety Council. A special thanks to Board Member Jason Uhlir and Minnkota for donating the truck that will put this trailer on the road. In 2023 we hope to be making North Dakota farms and ranches safer places to live and work.
This spring we launched Fit Testing. As we see demand from our members and our businesses, we know it is our job to think ahead and react. Fit Testing helps create a safer workplace for North Dakotans.
While we have accomplished so much more than this in the past fiscal year, we know it is our faithful team here at the NDSC that pushes us forward with a growth mindset. We have established an internal team and developed Strategic Planning for the next 5-years. Our plans are many, and we know there is nowhere to go but up!
In the past year, the number of long-term projects coming to fruition was numerous.
In 2021-2022 the NDSC has continued to expand and find new ways to put enhanced safety training into our communities.
The Slip SimulatorTM is a piece of equipment that expands on our slips, trips and falls training here in the Bismarck building. The training can reduce falls by up to 70%. It’s fun, it’s engaging and it’s a memorable experience that we’re proud to use.
With our eyes always on the horizon, we knew we needed to expand our CDL Entry Level driver trainer courses. Roads are deadly, and we want to be a part of the solution. With Federal requirements changing we wanted to be at the forefront of helping put skilled and safe drivers on our roads.
Preventing injuries and saving lives is our mission, and that extends to the 26,000 farms and ranches across North Dakota. Our Ag Safety Training program and Ag Training Trailer are the latest way we here at the NDSC can expand our reach traveling from trade shows to school visits to co-ops and beyond. Farm safety is family safety.
In 2022, the NDSC team participated in Giving Hearts Day. The goal was to purchase feedback manikins to further support our CPR courses statewide. The NDSC raised $6,455 February 10th during the 24-hour online fundraising event and purchased 8 feedback manikins. It’s the largest one day giving event in North Dakota.
The NDSC handed out 56 awards at our Annual Awards Banquet in 2022. Industries from transportation to law enforcement, manufacturing and oil and gas were all represented. During the 49th Annual Conference, Erika Erb of Dakota Fence Company received the Duane Kuehn Outstanding Safety Professional Award.
Community Safety at the North Dakota Safety Council means a whole approach to improving safety. By offering comprehensive training with emergency operation plans for businesses, school violence prevention planning and personal safety training. Our mission is to keep people safe, and courses like drug, alcohol & fatigue awareness, opioid awareness, and responsible beverage server training help confront some of the deepest problems our state faces. We’re working to be the safest state in the nation.
It’s our job here at the NDSC as a safety education non-profit to lead the way on school safety. School safety is about the future of our communities. It’s about our teachers, our support staff and our students. Our experienced safety consultants know that school violence is preventable. Its our job to step up, plan and train for any situation.
After years of improving road fatalities, we have seen a heartbreaking increase in the past two years. We need to do better. Traveling on our roads is the deadliest part of our day. It’s time we step up and put safety first. Our Driver Safety program is designed to save lives, reduce points, lower insurance and make our roads safer places to travel.
In 2022 we implemented new CDL training. As we continue to enhance driver safety, it takes an every-level approach. From teen drivers taking Alive at 25, to our communities committing to defensive driving, to our new truck and bus drivers entering the workforce with highly developed training. Our belief in an America without traffic fatalities can happen, but we must keep ahead of the curve.
- Terry Weaver, Driver Safety ManagerCPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, and with 7 of 10 cardiac arrests happening at home, learning CPR and first aid can make all the difference for your loved ones. NDSC First Aid & CPR training goes above and beyond. Whether it’s training your employees or training your family, the NDSC helps you learn memorable hands-on ways to react when an emergency happens.
Having someone in your workplace and in your community who can deliver first aid and CPR can be the difference between life and death. Don’t assume you’ll know how to react in an emergency. Let us teach you how to take initiative and be effective. Confidence can make all the difference.
One death in the workplace is too many. Our continued work to create real-world safety solutions isn’t done. The NDSC is consistently working to strengthen our ability to consult with businesses. This will help reduce hazards while finding new ways to meet businesses where it matters most...right on their job sites.
Industrial hygiene is something NDSC is committed to improving. Through noise sampling, fit testing, and FREE Industrial Hygiene Critical Issues courses, we know industrial hygiene cannot be overlooked. We are always working for safer workplaces. Whether it’s on the farm, in a warehouse, or in a plant, our Workplace Safety Program values every employee’s life.
In addition to safety training and consulting, the NDSC partners with other agencies to offer accident prevention and educational outreach efforts in the region. We pursue grants to meet the safety needs of North Dakotans.
Working with the North Dakota Departments of Human Services and Transportation, the NDSC launched a multifaceted digital marketing campaign to drive servers, owners and managers, and large event holders to our Responsible Beverage Server (RBS) webpage. RBS classes educate servers about serving responsibly and identifying fake IDs. This effort ensures establishments avoid liability issues, prevent bar patrons from being overserved, and contribute to the overall safety of North Dakotans on the road.
Ensures contractors apply consistent safety practices at every location they work within the energy industry.
Standardized contractor safety orientation for North Dakota’s oil and gas industry keeps workers safe across the state.
Operation Lifesaver of the Dakotas is led by the North Dakota Safety Council and supported by a variety of partners, including federal, state and local government agencies, highway safety organizations, law enforcement and the state’s railroads. Operation Lifesaver of the Dakotas was established to end collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way.
This year was heartwarming, as so many attendees were grateful and excited to be back in-person attending a conference with their peers. The opportunity to network and share best safety practices is something that is invaluable. As always, we couldn’t make the conference what it is without the support from our sponsors and their belief in safety education.

FY21-22 was a year of rebuilding membership after the pandemic, and we did just that.
from new members and members rejoining after letting their membership lapse due to budget cuts. We ended the fiscal year with 900 members. We spent much of the year visiting members, reviewing the benefits and attending events...all efforts to keep engagement and retention strong.
We are incredibly grateful to all our members for working with us to make North Dakota the safest state in the nation. We’ll keep offering the tools, courses, consultations and benefits that make membership relevant, and together we will achieve our goal of preventing injuries and saving lives.
In the past fiscal year, the NDSC has launched a podcast! Broadcast on Radio Access 102.5 FM and online at ndsc.org, the ‘Talk Safety to Me’ podcast features CEO Chuck Clairmont and unique guests talking safety, NDSC training and more.
