A YEAR OF CHANGE It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.

- Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities This quote from Charles Dickens pretty much sums up the 2019-20 year for the North Dakota Safety Council. Our year was off to a great start last July. We were seeing an increase in workforce trainings, AED sales had jumped, the number of Emergency Operation Plans we had written was on the rise, and we really felt we were making an impact on the way people approach safety in their lives.

At the end of February, we wrapped up one of our largest conferences in the past 10 years. We spent that week with 1,000 safety professionals chasing the same mission, and it was uplifting! It truly was the best of times…

Just two weeks later, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Minot. Governor Burgum held his first Coronavirus press conference as the rest of us stood by watching and wondering. The wonder turned to worry and the worry turned to action. We quickly developed a response team to study the coronavirus, write and implement our plan and develop trainings to help others deal with it. We created a series of free webinars about the biology of the virus, proper use of masks or respirators, and cleaning protocols. I’ve never been prouder of our team.

At first, navigating during the pandemic was just exhausting due to a lot of work and a lot of moving parts. Our training numbers dropped off drastically as businesses restricted travel and prevented staff from participating in group activities. We frantically transitioned 40 of our courses from classroom-taught to distance learning. Even though we had distance learning options, revenue dropped significantly. As time went on, it became difficult to sustain our energy levels and our positive outlook. We switched gears to find other revenue sources to stay alive. It truly was the worst of times…

But here we are, still in the midst of it all (who knew it would hang around this long?) and our business is adapting.

We have kept all our staff employed (we take the most pride in this) and we have changed for the better. How? Here are some examples: • We launched Bus Driver training as a distance learning course and it solved an age old problem for us. Small rural schools that were unable to send their drivers to Bismarck for training can now log onto a distance learning session from anywhere to get the training they need.

• Essential workers in the energy industry can now take the One Basin, One Way orientation from wherever they are to get their required certificate so they can keep working.

• With traffic crashes still being the #1 cause of workplace fatalities in North Dakota, there is nothing preventing drivers from taking a Defensive Driving Course in a distance learning format.

• We also offered our Critical Issues Training Series via distance learning and found we had an increase in participation.

As the pandemic reared its ugly head in North Dakota, our phones began to ring. The world was focused on COVID-19 and our members had questions on OSHA recordkeeping, sanitation, social distancing, and so much more. They needed answers, but they couldn’t find them. We knew we had the team in place to help, so we went to work creating not just one, but four free webinars. We were able to help hundreds and hundreds of people, statewide, at no cost to anyone. We knew it was simply our responsibility to help others during this crisis.
