Smith Serenbe Home Project Description Elizabeth Smith and her partner are building a custom home on lot 216 Grange in the Serenbe community in Georgia. Serenbe is a utopian ideal community aimed towards reverting back to older ways of life. The connectivity with nature and attention to the well-being of the environment is the sole purpose of this community. It is aimed towards being close enough that residents can walk where they need to go, and have constant connection and access to the nature surrounding them. The farm-to-table community continues to be extremely successful in providing many people with the ability to live the simpler lifestyle they desire.

Concept Statement The intent of this design is to combine natural materials and smart amenities to evoke a feeling of relaxation, connectedness to the outdoors and luxury. Luxury is functional, customized and aesthetically pleasing. A home is luxurious if it caters to your needs in every day life activities.

Client Research Elizabeth Smith and her partner desire a home dedicated to being a functional space to host their friends and family. They entertain up to 15 people on a regular basis, but Elizabeth also requires private space for business meetings relating to the restaurant she owns.

The couple requested two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a dedicated office, a formal dining room, a terrace for yoga, and ample entertainment space in the kitchen. In order to achieve the balance between business, entertaining and personal space, I divided the spaces strategically among two floors.

The lower level is aimed towards activites involving guests, so it houses living spaces, a large office, a half bathroom and a large porch with three doors opening up to it.

The upper level is dedicated to more private activities, so it includes the two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a smaller private loft. Off of the luxurious master suite is a private deck for the couple to enjoy the Georgian weather, beautiful forest view and morning yoga.

Concept Statement The goal of our design is to combine beauty and purpose in a timeless fashion. We will evoke the classic nature of the product with luxe quality and feminine design. We will utilize rose gold metallics, black and white marble finishes, and high contrast, simple forms. Contrasting smooth surfaces, with velvet accents, will create a luxury experience. Strategic displays using a variety of female body types will show the ease of access to professional and everyday attire. The displays will represent the versatility of each clothing item that Brass sells. This store will feel welcoming and be an exciting experience that will encourage people to visit our flagship storefront.

The Professor’s Retreat For this project, I had to goal to expand my knowledge of the technical aspects of interior design and architecture. It began with a scaled down foam core platform framing model. The photos to the right display the detailed labeling and cuts for the pieces of the model. It resembles a single story hip roof home with a foundation walling in a crawl space.

After understanding framing aspects, I created three unique study models to get creative ideas for the final retreat concept. I kept the idea of the more simple roof, but created a sloped shed roof. To further display my knowledge of framing aspects, a section cut was created to show the construction of a shed roof.

A furnished floor plan and elevations were hand-drawn to give guidelines for the to-scale, chip board model. In the model, framing members were drawn on all of the walls, floor and roof, as well as the windows and doors.

The Revival Cafe

Concept Statement To create an elegant, inviting and inspiring evironement for students, staff and visitors at Iowa State University, the cafe is designed with a gradient of colors and accent fixtures.

The cafe reflects the concept of revival and redemtion that I displayed in my sculpture piece originally inspired by AnAnselm Kiefer Untitled (1983) selm Kiefer’s Untitled (1983).

The Artist The painting Untitled (1983) was made by German artist Anselm Kiefer. He was born in 1945, a few short months before World War II ended. Kiefer is a contemporary artist taht focuses his work towards confronting the dark history of his culture.

Emotional Response At my first viewing of this piece, I felt a sense of despair.

The dull grey and blue tones in the paiting create a solemn feel, as do the jagged edges of the metal ladder. The railroad tracks leading into buildings in the distance are meant to symbolize the path many unfortuante souls took to the camps in Europe. The ballet shoes and the ladder they hang from break the edge of the massive canvas to represent recovery, restoration and redemption.

Technique Anselm Kiefer utilized a technique called impasto, which is the act of laying paint on very thickly. In addition to the heavy paint application, there are layer of sheet metal, fabrics, tree bark and more. The depth and movement achieved through these methods pulls a viewer in and causes deep thought.

The Revival Cafe Color Scheme of the Art Untitled (1983) by Kiefer contains a vast variety of hues and tones ranging from black to very light pink. The dominant colors were grey tones, and shades of white. A simple pop of pink in the ballet shoes is what sparked my interest and inspired this cafe Colors for The Revival Cafe With a gradiet of colors ranging from a deep black to light pink, I looked to achieve a feeling of redemtion and new life. As shown in the sketches to the right, I wanted my cafe project to evoke calm, elegance, tranquility and progression through the layers of life.

I chose to incorporate a gradient effect due to the transition present between the lower and upper canvas in the piece. On the lower canvas, there are train tracks, ash, sheet metal, wire, lead and bark present with small buildings in the background that represent the concentration camps. This evokes solemn feelings, whereas the upper canvas has lighter colors, a smoother finish, and a ladder that breaks the barrier of the canvas. This is to create the sense of new life and redemption.
