A Letter From Your Alumnae Leadership Board President

Dear Alumnae Sisters, This volume of Impact is about giving and gratitude. My gratitude to NDB is broad, and because of that, I try to give in as many ways as I can. That looks like meeting new NDB sisters at events, at my work and socially in hopes of bringing them back to the school that gave me my voice, my best friends and my launch pad to college and a professional career as a veterinarian. That looks like sending my girls to NDB, where I see them every day growing as strong, young women. I see them giving their time to help others and the school. Me giving time to support NDB is a gift for me. I truly believe that this school is remarkable and that the women who graduate will change the world, so giving back is natural. It is natural to want to support a school where the return on my gift of time and energy is boundless and helps support the future of the school and our world. With that, I am grateful. I am grateful for the whole experience of NDB. Please consider the impact that NDB has had on you and your life, and how you can give back to our school and change the world in our own Belmont backyard. In Notre Dame,

Mary Kmak '84 (P '24, P '26) Alumnae Leadership Board President

A Letter From the Head of School

Dear Notre Dame Belmont Alumnae, As we enter the holiday season, I hold immense gratitude for each and every one of you as an essential member of our lifelong NDB Community. NDB Alumnae are leaders across every industry - STEM, Humanities, Mass Communications, Sports Medicine and Management, Social Justice and the Arts - which is why we are launching specialized Academic Concentrations with the Class of 2028. Packaging our outstanding curriculum in a way that showcases the leadership our alumnae take on every unique path of life inspires our students to become leaders in our community and the communities that they become a part of as they enter their college and professional careers. This Thanksgiving and holiday season, I encourage you to reflect on your favorite memories from NDB and how you can give back to our community - whether it be as guest speaker, as a mentor and role model to current students, as a sponsor of our programs or as a feature story in our next Impact Magazine. Please reach out to me with any inquiries at messalat@ndhsb.org. In Gratitude,

Meredith Essalat '98 Head of School

STEM CAMP COLLABORATION Rebecca Girard, NDB Science Teacher, and Abiya Baqai ‘20, Human Biology and Public Policy Student at UC Berkeley, collaborate to provide a STEM intensive in Kenya, Africa. Inspired to combine her love of Human Biology with community service, Abiya Baqai ‘20 was thrilled to join forces with Rebecca Girard this past summer to teach STEM to young women in Kenya. “Traveling and teaching in Kenya was an enlightening experience and an opportunity that I never thought I would have. It was an honor to spread my curiosity for science and to encourage the girls with my love for medicine, partially because of the positive impact that NDB had on me. Notre Dame is where I grew to celebrate my passion for STEM and leadership. I could channel that positive encouragement toward the students of Lifunga High School because they were excited to share and grow their particular interests in science, which ranged from nursing and medicine to engineering to agriculture. Our goal was to expose Lifunga Girls School' s teachers and students to hands-on applications of biology and chemistry and an alternative interactive style of teaching that the school can incorporate in some of their lessons. We also sought to learn from the Kenyan people, and we left with many lessons of how much can be achieved in a passionate society that is working together to achieve the common goal of educating young girls.”

My favorite part of the STEM camp, aside from seeing the wonder on the girls’ faces when we did experiments, was my discussions with the students themselves. “Because I was significantly closer to their age, they were able to resonate with me, and we formed a deeper connection quickly. We spoke about everything from forging a career to feminine biology. I feel lucky that the girls trusted me with their personal thoughts and questions, and I am glad that we were able to discuss these sensitive topics with candor.”

Being part of the STEM Camp is such an honor. To be able to work with Abiya again was a dream. Rebecca Girard continues, “She was in my honors bio class as a freshman and AP Bio as a junior. Her enthusiasm, curiosity and intellect are impressive. She has such a genuine and kind heart. I loved partnering with her to plan the activities. She is a natural communicator. It was a joy to watch her interact with the Lifunga Girls students. Abiya is a confident scientist, willing to work hard, is humble and dedicated to serving others. She exemplifies the NDB Hallmarks. We prepared for and taught four to five hours of hands-on lab activities each day. Abiya was the most amazing assistant and coteacher! She kept me calm and always knew what we needed to get ready for the next lesson. All this and we had so much fun together!”

NDB LAUNCHES ACADEMIC CONCENTRATIONS Academic Concentrations empower students to dive into the field of study that they are most interested in, preparing them for a successful college and professional career. STEM

Humanities

Mass Communications

NDB’s Women in STEM Concentration immerses students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, preparing them for a college-level academic career.

The Humanities Concentration engrosses students in the study of language, history, religion, literature and philosophy. Students explore elements of life that impact human beings and their cultures with analytic critical methods of inquiry.

The Mass Communications Concentration prepares students to understand the ever-evolving power of media, media technologies and communications in daily life.

Social Justice The Social Justice Concentration empowers students to examine some of the most complex issues related to race, gender, sexuality and more.

Arts The Arts Concentration immerses students in creative expression in the classroom, on the stage and in the studio.

Sports Medicine and Management The Sports Medicine and Management Concentration takes students behind the scenes of the sports and athletics industry, giving them an eye into sports medicine and business management — two critical areas that make the world of sports a success.

Tiger Track The Tiger Track Concentration prepares students to enjoy a taste of everything at NDB. From science to arts to social sciences, the Tiger Track Concentration has it all!

St. Julie Scholar Beginning sophomore year, the St. Julie Scholar Concentration prepares students for elevated academic performance in college.

ALUMNAE LEAD ACROSS INDUSTRIES As NDB prepares to launch Academic Concentrations with the Class of 2028, we reflect upon the alumnae who are leading paths and serving their communities in each area of study, serving as role models for current and future students.

STEM

“As I was interested in entering the medical field, my counselors encouraged me to take on more difficult math and science classes. In AP Biology, Ms. Girard exposed her students to the career possibilities that may not be so obvious through her course content and fun lab exercises. In college I expanded on those concepts from NDB and honed in on my interests which happened to be genetics. I never was a quiet or shy kid, but I really value the single sex education that NDB uniquely offers as the experience enabled personal development by strengthening my confidence and my ability to communicate well with others. I work with researchers, doctors, nurses, and all kinds of patients and communicating effectively is very important. My NDB education allowed me to enter college and the workforce with confidence.”

Brooke Nightingale Dunleavy ‘11 Genetic Counselor, Stanford Children’s Hospital

ARTS, REAL ESTATE “It’s been a very long time since I’ve graduated from Notre Dame Belmont (Sailors, Class of 1990!), but I cherish and maintain the friendships that I cultivated while there. I’m still based in the Bay Area – San Francisco, to be exact – where I run an art gallery in the Mission District named after my daughter (Luna Rienne, who just started middle school) and work as a real estate agent for Vanguard Properties. Notre Dame provided me with the foundation to pursue my passions, retain professionalism and give back to the community. Similar to my NDBFFs (as I call them) in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Evanston and Barcelona, I like to think I’ve grown up to be a strong, independent woman who strives to be the change I’d like to see in the world, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

Olivia Ongpin ‘90 Luna Rienne Gallery, San Francisco Real Estate Agent, Vanguard Properties

HUMANITIES

“Notre Dame gave me a lot of skills in leadership, teamwork, project organization, public speaking and knowing how to ask the right questions that helped me through college and in my post-grad life. With caring and excited teachers, as well as a supportive and lively environment and a lot of incentive to work hard, Notre Dame was a great place to prepare me for my future. I am grateful for all the different types of extracurriculars Notre Dame has to offer despite being a small school, that helped me find my interests and build a wider variety of skills. I was also grateful for how interested the teachers were not only in their subject matter but also the lives of me and the other students.”

Emily Clarke ‘18 English Language Assistant in Extremadura, Spain Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport

SPORTS MEDICINE AND MANAGEMENT “When I left my NDB home, I was ready for college. Little did I know how well NDB had prepared me for collegiate life academically, athletically and for the career choices that I made after college. Even after leaving NDB, the support I received from the faculty, staff and administration remained the same and still does today. Coming full circle from student to coach, the NDB Tiger family has welcomed me home.“

Samantha Rossi Varsity Basketball Coach, Notre Dame Belmont Associate Finance Director of Stanford Athletics

MASS COMMUNICATIONS “Collectively, the skills I learned at NDB and perfected at TCU have allowed me to become an asset within the sports and entertainment industries. After one year, I was promoted, led our team in evolving the guest experience, personally hosted all-star musical talent, such as Joe Jonas, and promoted the importance of women in these industries. I look forward to learning, mentoring and evolving the sports and entertainment world. Notre Dame taught me to just go for it. You might meet failure along the way, but no matter what, everything happens for a reason. It also showed me that being around strong women and collaborating with others is beneficial to everything in life.”

STUDENTS ATTEND NOTRE DAME LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE IN BOSTON “The Leadership Conference in Boston was such an amazing experience, and I am so glad I was able to attend. We not only got much closer as a group but also made friends with other Notre Dame students from Ohio to Massachusetts, explains Emilia Luis ‘25. ”The conference helped me to better understand who I am as a leader and how I can utilize what I am passionate about to help support our community. Thank you so much for the sisters for such a great trip.” “The Boston Conference was one of my favorite memories at Notre Dame,” describes Sabrina Philip ‘24. ”Not only did I bond with the people I went with, but I learned leadership skills I will forever use, especially in college, while meeting new people from other Notre Dame schools around the country. We spent five days at Emmanuel College, in sessions led by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Boston. It was an extremely special and meaningful experience, and I would recommend any student to go while at NDB!” “The trip to Boston provided faculty members, staff, administrators and students with a deeper insight into the Notre Dame sisters' dedication to service and education,” explains NDB English Teacher Esthermaria Martin. “Witnessing students from across the nation come together for camaraderie was a truly gratifying experience. It also provided faculty members, staff and administrators the opportunity to connect and share best practices with each other. The rapid formation of strong bonds among all participants was truly remarkable. I wholeheartedly recommend this Boston trip, as it left a profoundly positive impact on my life as a whole. I now sense a deeper connection to my role as an educator and advocate within the NDB community.”

Named one of the “Top 10 Producers to Watch” by Variety, Naomi Sablan Scott ‘90 has produced award-winning content for film and television. She is a partner in Getting’Rad Productions, the LA-based company she founded with her partner actor Adam Scott. Under the Gettin’ Rad banner, Scott was an Executive Producer on Fox’s Ghosted. She produced the feature Other People starring Molly Shannon and Jesse Plemons, which earned four independent Spirit Award nominations, the Glaad Media Award for Outstanding Film and was chosen as the opening night film at the Sundance Film Festival. Scott has produced two other features, which also premiered at Sundance: The Overnight starring Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman and Taylor Shilling and Fun Mom Dinner starring Toni Collette and Bridget Everett. Scott started her career in Television on the latenight series Jimmy Kimmel Live. Scott is a gun violence prevention advocate and a founding member of the Everytown Creative Council. She also serves as Co-Chair for the Center for Reproductive Rights Los Angeles benefit.

Naomi Sablan Scott ‘90 Film Producer and Event Honoree “Forging strong connections with my Notre Dame sisters gave me a distinct advantage in life,” shared Naomi ‘90. “In work, I didn’t view women as competitors, for indeed there were (and are) fewer numbers of us in the entertainment field. Instead, I sought other women out for collaboration and counsel - just as I was encouraged to do at Notre Dame! When able to hire my own staff and crew, I knew that employing women was a smart business decision because studies show that genderdiverse workplaces increase productivity, creativity, staff retention and earn above-average profitability.“

“Building social and professional relationships with other women throughout my life has led to some great opportunities, not the least of which was being a part of the Times Up leadership team, the Creative Council for Everytown and an organizer for the Los Angeles Center for Reproductive Rights Benefit team. If not for Notre Dame, I most certainly would not be where I am today.”

“By graduation, I emerged a confident and curious person with less concern of rules and regulations—not because I didn’t believe in them—but because it had become clear to me over the preceding four years, that I could question them. That I should question them and everything around me. In that way, Notre Dame was not an echo chamber of doctrine and tradition, but an air cannon of hope and joy, unleashing young women like me into the world to discover and do great and interesting things.”

An ambitious group of NDB mothers opened Rags ‘n’ Riches in 1987, a resale shop that was located at 715 South B Street in San Mateo. Volunteers, many of whom were family members of NDB students, staffed the store Monday through Saturdays. Rags ‘n’ Riches made an NDB education possible for many students. Go Tigers!

Celebrating the Life of Valerie Collett Beloved English Teacher 1983 to 2009

Excerpts from a Reflection by Christine Lowenstein ‘86

“Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them,” wrote English author George Eliot. “I won’t forget Valerie Collett, longtime Notre Dame High School English teacher — my teacher and later my colleague — who passed away July 23, 2023. Valerie Collett was my AP English teacher when I was a senior at Notre Dame High School. I remember the first day of class when she told us that she was from a place in Cornwall, England called Land’s End. The very name of this place — Land’s End — sounded far away and exotic to this California girl, like it was from a book or fairy tale, perfect for an English teacher. She was a meticulously detailed and scrupulous teacher who did not bestow A’s easily. Revisions and multiple rewrites were often necessary in her class, because you had to get it all *just* right. She was not dour, however. In addition to her high expectations, Valerie had a sense of humor, and her eyes crinkled at the edges and sparkled whenever she laughed telling a funny story in class. Because of her I learned about the lives and social standing of women before the mid-20th century and how my own life had the potential to be different from theirs. We could indeed read and comprehend complex works of literature and we could use the tool of language to develop our own voices and our own writing. We learned that what we had to say was important, but that it needed to be said well if we expected others to understand it. Eight years after I graduated from Notre Dame High School, Valerie had become English Department Chair and I had earned my high school teaching credential. Just before another of my beloved English teachers, Father Michael Downey, died mid-year, he and Valerie and the Vice Principal, Kathleen Sullivan, decided I should take over the teaching of his five English classes. I’d had my teaching credential for exactly one week before I began teaching. Valerie was an amazing Department Chair and mentor, and she encouraged me and supported me so that I could develop as a teacher. It was a privilege and a pleasure and a lucky break to be Valerie’s colleague. I’d never have survived that first semester without her support and her reassurance that I could do the job and do it well. Over time, Valerie’s mentorship became a friendship. I thought of Valerie several times on my recent trip to the U.K. I think she’d have been pleased that I finally made it to “the England of English literature”. I wish she knew how much of my enjoyment came from things I’d learned or read in her class back in the 1985-1986 school year. I’ll miss Valerie Collett, but I will never forget her, and as I do with the late Father Downey and my other late NDB English Department colleague, Frank Ryerson, I will continue to carry her spirit with me into my own classroom every day. I think of that Holy Triumvirate — Downey, Collett, and Ryerson — and I count my blessings that I was able to learn from and to work with such a fabulous group of teachers so early in my career. Rest in Peace.”

Uniforms

“Notre Dame is very different today and yet very much the same, and that is the reason I love coming to school every day.”

While we still have what we call a uniform, it provides so many options that often no students are dressed alike. My school uniform was a brown wool pleated skirt, white peter pan collar blouse, yellow cardigan sweater and brown and white oxford shoes. We had a brown beanie to wear for mass. Free dress meant we could wear a dress, skirt and blouse, and sweater of our choosing. Pants were not allowed anytime on campus; we painted backdrops in skirts and sweaters. When I returned to NDB in 1974 as a teacher, the girls had a uniform skirt but were allowed to wear any blouse or polo and sweater in the colors white, beige, brown and yellow. Tennis shoes weren’t allowed until one of the parents, an orthopedist doctor, said they provided better support.

1967

By the mid 80's, the uniform had changed to a light yellow pinfeather skirt, meant to be worn in the warm weather, and the original brown polyester pleated skirt. However, no one chose to wear the brown skirt. Today – girls wear the navy or khaki skirt or pants with any NDB t-shirt and sweatshirt – there are so many choices that it’s difficult to see it as a uniform. Then we have the formal uniform worn for mass and special celebrations – navy blue skirt and sweater.

Academics Curriculum consisted of six periods, and students took five required courses and either a second language or an elective such as sewing or art. There were Honors classes but no AP. The faculty were Notre Dame Sisters who, at the time, wore the black and white habit; we had very few lay teachers: Foreign Language Mrs. Borroco, Math Mrs. Thompson, English Mrs. McCarthy and Social Science Mrs. Groom. While today there are no sisters on staff, several sisters in their retirement returned to Notre Dame – Sister Catherine Arnoldy, Sister Anna Miriam, Sister Catherine Theresa and Sister Frances Marie Charlton. Today we boast 22 AP courses, 15 Honors courses, 19 co-ed opportunities, 30 Visual and Performing Arts courses and Robotics. There was no Counseling Department. Homeroom teachers/advisors met with their students in a counseling capacity. The very first counselor was Mrs. Jennie McCarthy, and she met with seniors about their college choices.

Aquacades Aquacades is very much the same. While the date had been changed from October to the spring, our large group today is the equivalent of their small group. Today we have more elaborate deck routines and backdrops.

Tuition was $300 because the sisters took no salary.

Athletics We had volleyball and basketball. Today NDB features 15 sports programs that include 26 teams over the fall, winter and spring seasons. We compete in the West Bay Athletic League. Year-round we have Spirit Squad: Cheer and Pom.

Presently, there are 30+ clubs for students to join. If a student has an interest and an adviser, they can start their own club.

We had P.E., and we wore a dress that looked like today’s white shirtwaist dress your grandmother might buy at Talbots. In the early 70's, Sister Frances replaced the gym dress with gym shorts.

Clubs We had clubs, and the three religious ones were Mission Club, Sodality and Young Christian Students. We also had People to People, Spanish Club, Speech & Debate and Yearbook. Today, we have an array of clubs – everything from Advocate to Mock Trial to Health and Wellness to PreMed.

New and Different What we didn’t have when I was a student nor when I was a young teacher were water bottles, Starbucks, backpacks, cell phones, computers and social media. But, we had typewriters, white tennis balls, mimeograph machines and bells. As a student, I loved Notre Dame from Day One – our sisterhood, academic challenges and extracurriculars.

Let’s Cook InterSession Class, 2023

Students Today’s students are very much the same as when I was a student here in the late 60's and when I first taught here in the 70's. Let me tell you about our students because what I like best about NDB are the students – they are bright, articulate, hard working, but above all, they are kind. There are no random acts of kindness at NDB – rather, kindness permeates the buildings, hallways, classrooms, gyms and even our Father Michael Downey Garden.
