Dear Alumnae Sisters,

Dear NDB Alumnae,

NDB shines the most when we show off our students and what they can do. This is evident when you walk through our hallowed halls. The dance team may be practicing in the small gym and the amazing pieces of artwork that are so beautifully displayed in the hallways call to us, showing who and what our students are all about. Tigers are in classrooms, working on projects, meeting with teachers or simply hanging out with friends. In the basement, our sculpture room is buzzing with busy hands, and the video production classroom is alive with enthusiasm. The vibrant energy on campus is who we are. I would call this a holistic view of our school, where the girls can find out who they are, whether that is in our amazing dance program, in our stunning art program or any of the many other avenues that our students explore how to become change makers and leaders of the future. We are blessed to have a school that continues to offer such a strong Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) program, where we continue to highlight and grow our Tigers’ inner soul of creativity and confidence.

This summer, we celebrate the creative minds and colorful visionaries that blossom from their roots at Notre Dame Belmont. From award-winning producers and directors to professional artists and dancers, NDB Alumnae are nothing short of artistic and beautiful. As we celebrate the Visual and Performing Arts at NDB, I tip my hat to the incredible faculty who have nurtured our program for decades and to new faculty who have planted seeds of growth and inspiration for the Notre Dame Community. As you enjoy the warm weather and time with your family this summer, I hope that you pause to smell the roses and appreciate the incredible legacy of Notre Dame women that continues to paint a canvas of inspiration and hope in our world. I also invite you to read more about our 2025 Fund-a-Need which will ensure that all students experience the power of self-expression and movement.

Wellness is defined as “the state of being in good health especially as an actively pursued goal.” As I see it, as a mom of a recent graduate, current NDB mom and proud alumna, Notre Dame is excelling in how we approach wellness, nurturing our girls holistically, allowing them to pursue their passions. Come to campus for a visit and see what I mean. Our beloved school is alive with movement, creativity, spirit and Tiger Pride.

From Tiger TV to Emmy Award Winning Producer

Emmy Award Winning Producer and Director Gabriela Dematteis earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television Production from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and spent the year following graduation volunteering full time at a supportive housing nonprofit in New York City supported by the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

Gabriela shared that her Tiger TV classes really inspired her to pursue film and television production as a college major, and that Notre Dame prepared her to succeed in a male-dominated industry.

“My Notre Dame education prepared me to show up as my full self as a woman in the world and to speak up for myself whenever necessary. Attending Notre Dame where our classes were solely women allowed me to hone my voice without any fear of or distraction by the opposite sex. When I entered into film school and began to deal with the misogynistic behavior from some of the men, I felt confident and prepared to shut it down whenever I was present. And that confidence only compounded over time as I faced similar experiences from men in my industry throughout my career.”

Some of her favorite memories definitely come from being a part of Tiger TV, where she had fun collaborating with classmates about how they would recreate the opening credit scenes from some of their favorite television shows into opening credit scenes for Tiger TV.

“Getting the opportunity to practice my skills both in front of and behind the camera in that class gave me incredible knowledge and experience that helped me when I got to film school.”

Gabriela shared how very proud she is to be a Tiger and part of her family’s legacy of strong, powerful women.

“I’m incredibly grateful I got to attend the same high school that generations of other women in my family have attended – my maternal grandmother, my great aunt, two of my aunts, my mother and my sister have all graduated from Notre Dame, and I’m proud to be a part of that legacy of strong, powerful women.”

Student Spotlight Rui (Janet) Dong ‘25 PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN

Rui (Janet) Dong ‘25 transferred to NDB in her junior year and chose sculpture as an elective class to fulfill her requirement. As a senior she is taking AP Art.

who were physically bound by Chinese tradition even though their mindset desired freedom. The red hand weaving, while a joyful color in China, represents bondage and the numerous plaster legs represent the women bound by the culture. I bring the traditional culture to the forefront in a contemporary visual.”

“It was Mrs. Kuntz who made me passionate about art and gave me guidance how to create things to have a deeper meaning. She would work with me throughout the year on other projects.”

Janet’s career plans are to major in art and to be an artist.

“I’ve been very influenced by my family; my mother is an art collector and would take me to art shows when I was young, but it wasn’t until I came to Notre Dame, and really Mrs. Kuntz inspired me and opened my pathway.”

The California College of the Arts: Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Alliance for Young Artists and Writers presented Janet Dong Honorable Mention for “The Woven Bonds of Time.”

Janet explains her art work: “In traditional China women were not given much choice. My work represents the binding of women

It features the modern wedding dress to reflect on a modern woman’s mindset while tiny traditional shoes on blood symbolize the physical and mental suffering from the painful legacy of foot binding.”

Passion Brings Happiness LAURA REGAN CELLA ‘68 PROFESSIONAL ARTIST “I knew that I wanted to be an artist since the age of five when, inspired by Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ I colored ruby slippers onto my feet and discovered the magic of art.”

Laura Regan Cella shared that a career in art was never questionable and it was simply what she has always loved to do. “I find it exciting and rewarding, and I’m thrilled to be able to share my passion for painting and nature with the world.”

After studying graphic design at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Laura began to focus on her intense love of painting, which has been mainly selftaught. She is widely known for her vibrant wildlife images in oils and now acrylics and has exhibited throughout the country.

Because of her love of animals, she has also used her art to raise funds for many organizations including the World Wildlife Fund and the San Francisco Zoo. Many of her images can be seen on licensed products internationally, and some have been used by Italian designer Max Mara for a line of resort clothing. She has also illustrated 13 children’s books for major publishers, which have won a number of awards.

“I am currently working on several acrylic paintings and pastel paintings with a focus on wildlife. My desire is to have an exhibit of my work to support various wildlife conservation programs. I also have a line of greeting cards and giclée prints that are sold through various gift shops and galleries throughout the country. At 75 years old, I still try to paint every day, and I have no plans to retire....EVER! Why stop something that brings me so much joy? I think of the NDB art room that was funded by my parents, Ada and Barrie Regan, with the hopes that it helps to encourage budding artists toward a creative and exciting path ahead.”

When Laura talks about how NDB prepared her for her career in art, she recalls that Sister Monica Julie, SNDdeN told her about a contemporary of hers, Sister Mary Corita, who through her innovative graphic images designed the first LOVE stamp which became incredibly famous. Sister Monica Julie, SNDdeN mentioned that perhaps a career in graphic design would suit Laura.

“With the knowledge that my favorite classes were in the art rooms, Sister Monica Julie, SNDdeN encouraged me to continue my studies in art, and I will forever be grateful to her for that.”

Laura shares that she became a stronger person while at Notre Dame. As a particularly "awkward" teenager, the well-rounded education at Notre Dame gave her a chance to discover and explore some of her stronger points, giving her a better feeling of self-worth.

“My three daughters - Andrea, Elyse, and Amy - were also graduates of NDB, and as a mother, I am so very thankful that they were able to receive the same strong foundational education as me.”

Laura’s advice for students is to follow their passion! When they wake up in the morning, they need to think of a class that they are looking forward to attending that day. What is it about that class that they love? If they have the opportunity, take another class in the same subject, and if they are still intrigued, they may have found their passion.

“Follow that road if you can! Your passion will bring you happiness, even through challenging times!”

Laura’s favorite memories at NDB include art classes and also Aquacades.

“Oh my goodness! So many great memories! Of course, I cherished my times in art classes, but I also had a ball in Aquacades! I loved to swim in them, but also designed and made some of the costumes, which satisfied my creative appetite. I was also fortunate to make a couple of lifelong friends at NDB. What an amazing gift!”

12 Years of Inspiring Creativity at NDB Martha Anne Kuntz NDB Visual and Performing Arts Chair As Visual & Performing Arts Chair, Martha Anne Kuntz has been at Notre Dame for 12 years and department chair for eight. Her background is a Bachelor of Art and Master’s of Art Education. For the 2024-2025 school year, she teaches AP Studio Art, 2D Design, 3D Design, Drawing Portfolio; Sculpture I, II, III & Honors, Advanced Art, Fiber Arts.

Martha Anne explained that the VPA program is unique: “We are small but mighty. We go beyond what we're required to teach, helping students find their creativity in very unique ways. We are always thinking about what we can do next, how we can make our programs bigger and better, something students want to stay with beyond the required one year.”

Martha Anne shares that she ended up at Notre Dame by accident. While living in Austin, Texas she came back to visit her daughters. A former NDB art teacher forwarded her an email that she was looking for someone who could teach sculpture.

“On impulse, I applied, thinking this would be a chance for me to move back to California. The rest is history. Why have I stayed? The community, the size, the fact that I can be as innovative as I want with teaching.”

She believes that creativity is important for students and the arts help students to excel in whatever career path they choose: “Creativity is the one thing I am the most passionate about. My biggest challenge (and goal) is to find a way to have students go beyond what they think they can do into the realm of what they don't know they can do (yet!). Getting students off their devices and knowing there is creativity beyond Pinterest and Instagram has become my most important quest. Visual and Performing Arts allows students to take the time to be creative. Once they see what they can do, they can translate their creativity into any language they want, in any area of study. We teach them how.”

NDB's program has evolved over the years in that students were taking VPA classes by the semester rather than as year-long courses. The perception of VPA was as a “filler” class. Scheduling was changed so that students would stay in the course for a year, and presently there is a much higher percentage of students taking more than one year as a much broader variety of classes is offered.

The legacy Martha Anne would like to leave, her dream, is that VPA in all levels and configurations will be part of every course being taught.

“Art, in all its forms, will be recognized as an essential part of education, not only at NDB but in every school. That students truly understand that failure means we're trying, experimenting, revising, and opening up new ideas.”

“What I like best about my students is their desire to experiment with materials and ideas they have never worked with before; after their initial ‘I don’t know what to do,’ they open up and fly.”

Student Spotlight: Adriana Esguerra ‘25 Santa Clara University

“The art program here is the reason I came to Notre Dame. Mrs. Kuntz is the biggest inspiration to me.”

Adriana Esguerra ‘25 has taken art classes each year and is planning to minor in art at Santa Clara University. She did her Capstone Project on art therapy.

Successfully combining her passion for art with leadership, Adriana explains how Notre Dame has opened so many opportunities for leadership, and that

being Ambassador Board President has been the biggest blessing ever. Adriana has spoken at all NDB Open Houses, the Fund a Future Scholarship Benefit, and at Notre Dame Night for the last two years.

“Notre Dame showed me I can become my own business leader. Head of School Mrs. Essalat is so powerful; she’s the biggest woman leader ever. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and to have my own business. Starting my own art business through Instagram allowed me to get orders from Notre Dame students. I do a lot of college dorm painting; I did Caitlin Degnan’s dorm room for her last year, and I have 13 orders for this year. I want to be an interior designer.”

California College of the Arts, in partnership with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, presented Adriana with Honorable Mention in the 2025 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her entry “Deep Roots of My Heritage.” Her work was recognized by a panel of creative professionals for its outstanding merit in originality, skill and the emergence of her personal voice and vision.

Since 1923, the Awards have recognized some of the nation’s most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay Walking Stick, José Parlá, Amanda Gorman, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates and Andy Warhol. Adriana is counted among these esteemed Scholastic Awards alumni!

Deep Roots of my Heritage

“This piece represents my heritage. My family immigrated to the United States from around the world long before I was born, and all their cultures are a part of me. Above the plexi box, the strength of the tree is symbolized by the hand-embroidered names of my living family members. The roots below the tree are even stronger and symbolize all my family members who were the beginning of my lineage.”

“I have a unique family, stemming from every corner of the world. My mother is from Africa, my father is from the Philippines; my grandfather is from England, and his wife is from Zimbabwe. Yet I have always been aware that when people look at me, they see only one thing, a girl who is light-complected. People judge who I am based on the color of my skin, not knowing how important my heritage is in forming the very core of me. The art I created represents all of those people who made me who I am today. I am different because of this. What makes me, me will only ever be able to be seen by me.”

The Woman My Father Loved

“I came across a small bundle of letters my father wrote to my mother, his future wife. The letters, handwritten, were so full of hope, love, and the future they were about to share. I held on to them until my mother was gone and the time was right to know more about my parents - two people who fell in love and stayed together all of their lives. My parents are now gone, and while photographs are a memory of them, my father's letters allowed me a glimpse of who they were before me. His words speak to a woman I did not know, a woman who became my mother. The passion in my father’s writing was my inspiration. He was devoted to my mother and his words painted a picture of who they were and how they began.

I was not a part of their future, it was just the two of them in their world, belonging to each other. Using embroidery as the vehicle, my art encompasses them and the time they belonged to each other.”

The Power of Dance Coleen Lorenz, NDB Dance Teacher When dance instructor Coleen Lorenz started at NDB in 2004, there was one dance class offered, and InStep was a club open to anyone interested. Over the past 20 years, many developments occurred to provide beginning through pre-professional training in dance. In beginning through advanced/honors dance (levels 1-4), students gain experience in combining technical moves into sequences and patterns that become full length pieces of choreography. At the advanced/honors level, students are invited to create their own original choreography and teach it to the other level students in the class.

InStep (level 5 class) has evolved to become NDB’s featured InStep Dance Company. In addition to NDB school-wide performances, InStep is also invited to intern in various projects with NewGround Theatre Dance Co. (Ms. Lorenz, Artistic Director) or partake in outside community projects with other dance companies such as PBG. As of 2023, the dance program has become part of “The Evening Of The Arts VPA Showcase” held in the CSM

Theatre each spring, a unique and vibrant collaborative event that now includes visual art, choir and dance.

This year, InStep was invited to perform in NewGround Theatre Dance Company’s performance called PASSAGES, a 60minute professional production featuring one of NDB’s own alumnae from InStep, Abigail Rossi ‘19.

When asked how the dance program provides students with an eye into the professional dance industry, Ms. Lorenz explained that over the past 20 years, many students have gone into careers of performance, choreography and teaching within the field of dance. Many InStep students go on to become dance minors or dance majors at the university level, and some continue on to the professional circuit as a career.

Ms. Lorenz shared that her favorite part of teaching dance is that she loves the students’ creativity, their willingness to explore and discover new ideas and ways to dance, and their kindness and compassion towards each other.

“It makes my heart sing when I watch a student who has mastered a skill better than another offering kindness to share what they know in order to try and help the other person learn that particular move and grow.”

As part of the NDB community, Ms. Lorenz sees the message of compassion as profound and clear. “The good vibes at NDB are palpable, and I can honestly say that there is something wonderful and special about this community. What has kept me at NDB so long are the students, the community, the freedom of creative expression, the wellness and therapeutic aspects of movement, and the love of teaching and inspiring others in the beauty and power of dance.”

Creating Art is Problem Solving

creating art is problem solving, especially when starting a new project and having a blank canvas in front.

Mark Thiesen, Photography, Video Production and Art Teacher Mark Thiesen is in his fourth year at NDB and teaches art, photography, video production and graphic design. Mark had been in art education for over 20 years, formerly at the San Francisco Art Institute.

When he found a listing for teaching what he was most passionate about — Photography, Video, and Graphic Design — and talked to a friend who described the beautiful campus and how welcoming everyone was on her visit, “the chance to teach what I love and do it at a beautiful welcoming environment made me put my hat in the ring.”

What Mark enjoys most about teaching at NDB is “everything.”

“I know it sounds simple, silly or flippant, but everyone is so committed to doing their part in helping all the students have a great overall educational experience. My first year was overwhelming, and I can't believe I made it through as it was a blur, coming out of the pandemic, but what NDB does so well is have so many hands reaching out to help. It makes it a joy to be able to be in the classroom and share as much knowledge as possible with the students.”

Mark shares what he loves about Notre Dame students. “Can I say Everything again?

Seriously, we have some incredible girls come into NDB with considerable talents, and to see and help them explore so many interests, from classes to clubs, sports, dances, plays....and then see them grow in confidence, skills, and ability...becoming young women ready to tackle even more.”

Mark explains that it’s important for students to explore their creativity through the arts because

“Critical thinking skills are the heart to any art project, and as you continue to create you build self confidence in your ideas and techniques; the arts allow expression in a focused type of communication to share thoughts and ideas with the wider world, and that creativity drives innovation by building off those that came before them. Creative thinking is not always easy, but it is highly prized in many fields so creating a work of art gives the students the skills to tackle projects in any environment.”

Finding Your Voice Isabella Custino, NDB Choir Director Choir Program Director Isabella Custino shared that building the choir program at NDB provides an opportunity for students to explore and share their voices with each other and the community. While they have started small, the overall growth and impact that students have had on each other and her is profound. She sees that choral singing creates community, and her goal is to invite as many students into that community as possible.

“NDB offers so many great VPA courses where students can express themselves, and growing a strong choral program is an excellent way to round out what we offer to students. I am looking forward to including more voices as we grow!”

The first annual Winter Lights featured the student a cappella group Fermata the Blue, in addition to the NDB Chamber Choir and the Tri-School Choir.

Students sang a diverse set of repertoires featuring different styles of music with lyrics in multiple languages.

“I was so proud of their preparation and thoroughly impressed with their performance for the audience. I could not have asked for a better first concert at NDB!”

When asked why she loved teaching at NDB, she explained that her students are intelligent, kind, helpful, and dedicated to personal growth and collaboration.

“Every minute that I’ve spent working with this group has brought joy to my life. The energy in our classroom is infectious, and the students have worked so hard to embody the music that we are working on. So many students at NDB have immense creative talent, and it is wonderful that I can provide an additional opportunity for them to share their gifts with our school community. As a teacher, it is a privilege to share my passion for music with them every day.”

Isabella believes that it is important for students to explore their creativity and forms of self-expression like choir because so much pressure is placed on young people to be high-achieving and overworked in every aspect of their lives.

“Choir is a place where students can be themselves, make mistakes, explore a creative outlet, and leave behind the worries and stresses from other parts of their lives. It’s so important that students have an opportunity to decompress and be in touch with what makes them happy and fulfilled. For many people, music creates that opportunity, and that’s what I keep at the center of our creative process. I have watched multiple students ‘find their voice’ in choir by exploring their creativity and making friendships, and it has been special to witness. Choir is for everyone and everyone who wants to try.”

Abigail Rossi ‘19 Professional dancer and dance teacher Abigail (Abby) Rossi ‘19 reflects that she wouldn’t be the woman she is today if it weren’t for her education and experience at NDB. It was her NDB education that inspired her career in the arts.

“With my time at NDB, I was heavily involved in the performing arts community. I was on the competitive Pom team all four years and was in InStep Dance all four years, as well. I learned discipline, time management, and how to live a balanced, yet busy life, and most importantly, I learned the beautiful impact that dance can have. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t be where I am now with my dance career as a dance teacher and a professional dancer, if it weren’t for NDB, Ms. Lorenz and my parents guiding me to make the best decision for what makes me the happiest.”

After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance, Abby had the opportunity to come back to

her alma mater as a substitute teacher for dance classes.

“Watching the girls’ faces light up and watching NDB dance students dance my choreography hit me in a soft spot. It was in those moments that I knew what my purpose was in the dance industry: to teach, inspire, and spread my love and passion for dance to all.”

“I am beyond lucky that I was given the opportunity by Ms. Lorenz to not only sub the Dance I and InStep class, but to also choreograph for one of the InStep sections in PASSAGES. Being fresh out of college, booking a professional gig, and on top of it all, being able to choreograph for the professional gig is something that all dancers fresh out of their college dance program dream of, and mine became a reality. I truly owe it all to Ms. Lorenz and the environment she creates within her classes at NDB.”

Abby’s participation in PASSAGES gave her the opportunity to dance as an alumna who is now a professional dancer with the NDB students, “Dancing alongside NDB students as an alumna was something I never thought I was going to experience. I reflected a lot after my final show with New Ground and the InStep class, and I am beyond grateful for every single person who made the experience what it was.”

Abby shares her gratitude for Ms. Coleen Lorenz as a teacher.

“All of my teacher experiences at NDB were positive, but it only takes that one teacher to change your entire perspective on life; for me that is Ms. Lorenz. I went to her for everything and anything, and no matter what was going on in her life, she welcomed me with open arms every time. I am extremely grateful for everything Coleen Lorenz has taught and continues to teach me.”

Stay True to You Caitlin McGinty Beanan ‘02 Realtor and Actress At 17, Caitlin McGinty took second place in a 2002 voice competition judged by the producer of Beach Blanket Babylon, the satirical cabaret revue and San Francisco institution. Although McGinty failed to capture the $10,000 scholarship prize, producer Jo Schuman Silver said she was drawn to her immediately, citing her height, presence and singing ability.

“I doubt anything is harder than a career in acting!

There’s a lot of rejection and sometimes it can be tough to keep going. Real estate can be similar. You’re always looking for the next ‘job,’ the next piece of work. But, NDB taught me resiliency and hard work. So much of these careers is about consistency and putting in the work. I think that’s the thing that most will give up on. Talent only gets you so far. You need to be willing to hustle and grind. NDB was a great place as the teachers were lovely, but they challenged and offered tough love when needed. That’s so important going out into the real world.”

After working in several productions in Southern California, McGinty auditioned for Beach Blanket again, motivated by a desire to return to the Bay Area and to achieve a dream she first cultivated as a 13-year-old performing with the Peninsula Civic Light Opera.

Performing in Beach Blanket required dancing and singing outrageous numbers while wearing comically oversized hats.

While rehearsing, she danced onstage with a hat weighing several pounds and fitted with Chiquita bananas.

Attending UC Irivine helped Caitlin to become more independent and to develop personally and professionally.

She completed a degree in musical theatre with honors in 2006.

Today, Caitlin is a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Burlingame and performs when her schedule allows it. The last production she did was Something Rotten at the Hillbarn Theatre where she played the character Nostradamus.

Notre Dame prepared Caitlin for her careers in both acting and real estate.

Caitlin shares that she is grateful for the community that NDB created and continues to create. She has only fond memories of the friends she shared as well as the teachers who helped shape them.

The summer before freshman year, she did her first musical and “fell in love.” She auditioned for Oklahoma her freshman year, and “the rest is history.”

Tri-School Productions inspired her to pursue her career and what it was like participating. When she went back to see Newsies, all her incredible memories came back.

“Doing the shows in high school were some of the best moments of my life. I made life-long friends (one of which is my daughter’s godfather), had insane amounts of fun and learned SO much about musical theatre and acting.”

Caitlin returned to Tri-School Productions Alumni night and saw friends she hadn’t seen in a long time.

“It was magical and brought tears to my eyes. Gennine was celebrated as it was her 30th year with Tri-School. Everyone had the same thing to say. She is magic and created a safe space for kids to spread their wings and begin their theatre journeys.”

Caitlin’s favorite memories of NDB are with Tri-School, and “Grease” was one that stands out. She played Rizzo, and “it was my first time to really act. It was terrifying and wonderful.”

Caitlin’s advice to students who want to pursue careers in performance/art is to put in the work and never give up.

“It is TOUGH and you have to want it more than anything. I loved it, but not quite enough to make it my career long term. Life happens and other things took priority. But if you want it more than anything, then go get it.

Work hard, be consistent, make connections, and stay true to you.

Always be learning and mastering your skill. There’s nothing like it, and while it can be tough, it can also bring the highest of highs.”

A Personal Touch to Marketing Marilyn Cowley ‘09

Founder, CEO and Creative Director of PREM PR & Social in Newport Beach and SF Marilyn Cowley ‘09 is the Owner and Creative Director of PREM, a boutique strategic PR & social media marketing firm known for elevating brands to new heights and delivering exceptional ROIfocused results.

Notre Dame prepared Marilyn for her career and for starting and owning her own company. NDB challenged her academically and personally. It taught her how to multitask, take chances, and understand that hard work really does pay off.

“PREM, which stands for Personal, Results, Effective, and Memorable, sets itself apart by providing the personal touch often lacking in larger agencies. We seamlessly integrate with our client's teams, acting as an extension of their vision. Delivering tangible results is a source of great pride for us.”

“I learned that being a doer — someone who gets things done — is one of the most powerful traits you can have. And you can do it all with grace.”

Prior to establishing PREM, Marilyn gained valuable insights and expertise in the media industry by hosting a successful TV show for five years. This experience allowed her to offer a distinct perspective and deliver impactful strategies that distinguished their clients from the competition.

Marilyn shared how she regrets not doing Tiger TV because it would’ve given her a head start on pursuing one of her passions. However, after graduating she reached out to Mr. Frank Ryerson who welcomed her back as an intern. Even though she never participated while she was a student, that hands-on experience after the fact was a turning point.

“That post-grad internship not only reignited my passion, but also gave me the clarity and confidence to pursue a career in broadcasting. It absolutely fueled my desire to study and eventually become a TV host.”

Some of Marilyn’s favorite experiences were being part of the dance and tennis teams because that’s where she stepped into leadership roles and learned how to push herself outside of her comfort zone. She explained that those moments gave her the confidence and foundations she needed to eventually start and run her own company.

“I was captain of my dance and tennis teams, a natural delegator, and always loved being part of Aquacades, where I got to help create and develop routines. I also taught dance to other students and choreographed for school showcases, which gave me early experience in both leadership and creative direction. All of these moments, while they didn’t feel like ‘business training at the time, absolutely shaped me into the entrepreneur and marketer I am today.”

“Notre Dame also truly prepared me for college — once I got there, it honestly felt like a breeze.

One of the biggest takeaways was that you don’t need to have everything figured out in high school or feel pressure to lock into a major right away.”

“What I’m most thankful for is the sisterhood.

We were truly a family. There was such a strong sense of belonging, empowerment, and confidence — we weren’t afraid to ask a boy to a school dance or speak up for what we believed in. That spirit still lives in me today.”

Marilyn shared her advice to students who are interested in starting their own companies some day.

Marilyn served as class historian which let her tap into her creative side by taking photos and designing collages. She also petitioned to start a Tri-School dance class that was approved as a college-transferable course, which is something she is really proud of today.

“Don’t be afraid to take chances — some of the best things in life come from simply saying ‘yes’ to new opportunities. Surround yourself with mentors who inspire you and are already doing what you dream of doing.”

Marilyn is grateful for her Notre Dame education because she learned how to be independent while still relying on a strong, supportive community.

In today’s world, there’s no excuse not to educate yourself when so many resources are right at your fingertips. Stay curious, stay driven and remember that progress often comes from putting yourself out there, even when it’s scary.”

Sianna Kiebler ‘25 A Star on the Rise

Sianna’s background in performance, mainly musical theatre, and the Tri-School theatre program was one of the reasons she chose Notre Dame. While she originally wanted to do musical, she tried out for the play Ghostlight and loved it; then on she had a particular appreciation for acting.

Sianna explains that the NDB education taught her to trust those around her and to believe in herself. NDB prepared her for college in both academics and emotions, and Tri-School has prepared her artistically from techniques to strategies and consistent practice of her craft.

“When applying to college for performing arts, you typically have to be accepted artistically and academically. Notre Dame has ensured my academic application stands out and has the rigor to be accepted into college.”

The family atmosphere/bond that alumnae often talk about resonates with Sianna who shares that Tri-School Productions has been her life source for the past four years. They are, and will always be, her family.

“We often say there are no words for Tri-School because it is difficult to express the pure nature of our community. However, in my terms, Tri-School Production’s community contains the raw essence of what it means to be human: the primal instinct of love, growth and communion. In every show, there is an instant of synchronization

between the cast; everyone is present, connected, and overwhelmingly devoted to that moment. That is when I feel the most human; it is a beautiful experience. That is why I, and many other Tri-School members, will always come back to the Tri-School family, for the split moment where love is exchanged for simply being human.”

At UCLA, Sianna will be studying acting, hoping to specialize in film performance and be on screen.

Recognizing that the power of film and television is constantly growing, she would like to be part of the media that can change society.

for everyone, but once the risk is taken, the community of creative minds becomes a home to everyone.”

Sianna’s advice to students is “instead of dismissing an experience in the arts, try it. Take the NDB dance class, join the art club, or do the Tri-School shows.” She promises the knowledge they gain from artistic pursuits will be invaluable to their experience as a human being.

“I don’t know the details or logistics, but I know I want to be a storyteller, one who is a part of something greater than myself, and I choose to enact positive change through acting.”

Aware of the imbalance between the arts and other aspects of education, Sianna wants to reiterate the importance of balance.

“Whatever the reasons, visual and performing arts are competing with sports and academics.

As I see it, academics grow the mind, sports or exercise train the body, and art nurtures the soul, each just as essential as the other. Being in a creative atmosphere most of my life has encouraged me to reflect on the type of person I want to be and has exposed me to people with very diverse backgrounds, each a valued addition to the art community. From an outside perspective, creativity may not be a first choice

Today we introduce the stars behind the curtain — the Tri-School Productions Build and Tech Crew.

Students work side-by-side with a team of professional designers to put on all aspects of each show including elaborate sets, theatrical lighting and sound.

Among the many sentiments showcased, Amu Raju ‘25 shared, “People should join Stage Crew because you learn how to build sets and meet so many new people.”

The longest standing and most dedicated crew members can apply over the summer to become Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers for the following season. This year, Claire McCoy ‘25 was Assistant Stage Manager for the fall play Clue.

Cati ‘25 shares, “I joined Stage Crew because I love art and this is a unique way to express my interest.”

Earning the position of Sound Board Operator this year, Cati did a fantastic job with the productions Clue and Newsies.

With many outstanding crew members like Catie graduating this year, Cat Adamis, NDB Marketing and Communications Manager, worked with Claire McCoy ‘25, Tri-School Productions Crew Member and NDB Marketing and Communications Student Intern to promote student participation in Stage Crew.

Having created many of the promotional videos for the play and musical, Claire produced a video featuring testimonials of current Crew members sharing why they joined and why others should participate.

“Doing Stage Crew and being one of the stage managers was such a unique and special opportunity where I gained great leadership skills and experience, as well as a great TriSchool community.”

Above all, a resounding number of students expressed the family-like atmosphere of being on Tri-School Productions Stage Crew.

“It’s like a family — everyone is connected and works together as a team. It’s a lot of fun to be a part of,” shared Cati.

The efforts of Cat and Claire paid off as 12 NDB students, including many lower classmen, participated in Stage Crew for the Spring Musical Newsies.

Fibers and Fabrics Class Ventures to San Francisco This year Notre Dame Belmont launched a brand new art course, Fibers and Fabrics. The first half of the year is taught by Martha Anne Kuntz, Visual and Performing Arts Chair. In this portion, students explored different forms of fiber art including stitching.

For the second half of the year, students learn to sew with Dr. Helen Ciernick and co-teacher Mrs. Rebecca Cook. In May, students embarked on a “shopping spree” in San Francisco to explore new materials and choose supplies for their upcoming projects.

“On our Britex field trip, I learned about different types of fabrics and materials. It was so cool to learn where the fabrics came from and pick my own for our next project,” shared Cadence Goblirsch ‘27.

“Sewing not only allows students to express their creativity and individuality, it enables them to learn important life skills such as problem solving, deciphering directions and supporting one another," shared Helen.

“My favorite part about Fiber Arts is the creative freedom we have. Yes, we still learn precise methods to sew, but if we don’t like something, we can change it. Your pants are too long? We can take them in! I also love how I can take what I learned outside of the classroom to create garments of my own,” shared Siena Heid ‘28.

Students Shine on Stage and in the Art Gallery On Wednesday, April 30, Visual and Performing Arts students showcased their work on the stage and in the art gallery at An Evening of the Arts at College of San Mateo Theater. Guests arrived to an appetizer and mocktail reception where they perused an elaborate art gallery displaying the work of Art and Sculpture students, including paintings, embroidery, clay masks and beautiful dress designs.

After a fabulous art show, guests proceeded into the theater to watch an art show like no other, combining visual and performing arts into one. Choir showcased several outstanding songs followed by 20 dance routines performed by Dance I through Dance IV many choreographed by students in Dance IV, NDB's InStep Dance Company. Some of the dances incorporated the artwork of visual arts students, including masks created by Sculpture class.

Interspersed between dance performances, student art and sculpture pieces were showcased using state-of-the-art videos accompanied by the voices of the artists explaining the meanings behind their work.

"We made the art a part of the show, allowing it to speak to the audience," shared Arts Chair Martha Anne Kuntz.

The dancers concluded the show with a dance to Another Day of Sun with live music performed by NDB Choir. We are incredibly proud of all visual and performing artists for showcasing their work. What a show, Tigers!

Let’s Get MOVING! Fund-a-Need for Athletics Complex, Movement Center and Art Studio “An NDB education is not simply about educating a student's mind — it’s about forming a healthy human spirit,” explained Head of School Meredith Essalat ‘98. This year’s Fund-a-Need will ensure that all students experience the power of self-expression and movement.

“We now have the opportunity to move all athletic facilities (training room, weight room and a new Movement Center) to spaces surrounding the Moore Pavilion, creating an Athletics Complex at NDB,” explained Meredith.

“Having all visual and performing arts in one place would be incredible,” shared Martha Anne Kuntz, Visual and Performing Arts Chair. “The other day I ventured across campus to Mark Thiesen’s photography class and I ended up staying and helping out because it was fun. We thrive on one another and the students pick up on that positive energy when we are able to collaborate. This new space will empower us to do just that.”

“Creating a state-of-the-art facility will not only encourage our current students and athletes to be more active but will also draw in incoming students by showing them that holistic wellness is a priority for NDB,” shared Kate Mahoney, Kinesiology Department Director.

Moving athletics facilities to one area which will now be called an Athletics Complex will also allow for NDB to create a brand new Art Room, moving all Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) to their own VPA Wing on campus.

In addition to a refreshed Athletics Complex and Art Room, NDB would also gain a new Movement Center for students to experience a variety of classes including yoga, pilates, barre and more!

Adriana Esguerra ‘25 opened up about how art classes at NDB have been her safe place to release stress, express herself and just be herself. “I definitely wouldn’t be able to minor in art at Santa Clara University in the fall if it weren’t for NDB’s art program. Having a larger Art Classroom will allow students like me to express themselves and produce amazing pieces that we can display in our art gallery here at NDB.”

Coleen Lorenz, NDB Dance Teacher and Movement Therapist explained, “We live in a society where there is a brain-body split. When the brain and the body are not in cooperation, the brain goes on overdrive. We have to open our hearts, calm our heads and return ourselves to being mindful as we are in our bodies — our whole self. This new movement center will empower us and our students to do all of that.”

Aria Smith ‘27 shares that “throughout the day I pick up stress and it’s so fun to be able to just play a sport and let it all out on the court.”

“To become owners of our own emotions is one of the most powerful experiences we can ever have — that being key to what we can offer our students — how to become aware and in ownership of how we’re feeling inside ourselves,” shared Coleen Lorenz, Dance Teacher. “That’s what mindfulness and movement do. I know this Funda-Need will empower students to be able to experience and be and do all of this.”

No matter what career our students choose, NDB’s Athletics and Visual and Performing Arts programs empower students to learn to express themselves and achieve holistic wellness that can be applied to all aspects of life.

Class Notes Class of ‘72 Friends Kathy Thompson Hanson, Sue Buckley Shire, Mary Bleck Kleinhenz and Betsy Brooks McCort gathered in Kailua, Hawaii in October to brush up on Aquacades skills with some real "pros" and to celebrate their milestone birthday year together.

Meg Day ‘02 Meg Day ‘02 was named the 2024 Guggenheim Poet-in-Residence. Day’s residency, All Ears, had three key aims: to highlight Deaf poets as visual artists by welcoming them into the museum space in new ways; encourage the hearing-majority public to engage with American Sign Language and Deaf sonics through unexpected encounters; and to encourage people to reorient their understanding of language and fluency as visible, just as much as it is aural.

Kimia Akhavein ‘12 In May 2024 Kimia earned her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in Developmental Psychology. During her time at UNL, she worked with parents and educators on how to best support children’s math learning for school success and beyond. Last August Kimia got married in Monterey, California. Her bridal party included two fellow NDB alumnae, Laylee Davallou ‘13 and Danielle Horn '12, with multiple NDB, Serra, and Mercy alumni in attendance. She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, Jacob Brown, working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University on a research project that supports students' math outcomes.
