Final Thoughts from Fuzz French

I have had one of the more unconventional journeys with Notre Dame Academy. After my family and I moved up to Green Bay from Dallas, Coach John Nowak contacted my mother and asked her to be one of the assistant track coaches here at the school. She accepted and brought me along to practice every day. Besides being here in the spring, I was also the waterboy for the football team up until my freshman year, and I was here every Friday night. Having such a long history with Notre Dame, I felt it would be the icing on the cake to share a few thoughts as we leave this place.

In a few days we start the newest chapter in our lives, a chapter that seems scary, unpredictable, and unknown.

But it’s the same way we felt when we all graduated from our middle schools and headed here to NDA. Our journey began with the freshman orientation where, if you had a leader like I did, you found out about the pool on the roof.

During this orientation we also learned the ins and outs of Notre Dame Academy, like how the basement is haunted, where Max the Trainer’s room is, and if you wanted a brownie, Mrs. Brown’s room was the best place to go. In the last four years we experienced many unforgettable moments like Friday Night Lights, Mr. NDA, band trips, musicals, and, of course, the 23-year-old milk chug challenge. We also have experienced some not-so-great things, like the pressure of IB classes, the varying temperatures of the classrooms, and, of course, the departure of so many we loved. But we have gotten through it all, except for two things--graduation on Sunday and then saying our final farewells.

We all know graduation is not the end; it’s only the beginning. While many of us will be off to college to find new friends and to somewhat forget what we are currently finishing, I ask you all not to forget, like the many times I forgot test dates and the content of the test, but to remember all the stuff we have been through. All of us have memories and moments that we will never forget, mainly because we learn from these memories.

One of the biggest events that happened in the last four years for me was my papa, my grandfather, passing away. He was 71 years old— in perfect health, walking three miles every day and having the sharpest mind of anybody I know. But life ends in the blink of an eye. Without even a warning, you can be gone in a second. That is what I learned from my papa’s passing, and I will carry that with me for the rest of my life. We need to live life to the fullest and really invest ourselves in the commitments we take on because we never know when it’s going to end. Another thing that my papa taught me is that the true measure of a person is how he treats others. In my family we have one word to describe our general attitude towards others, and that word is “kindness.” Kindness includes many things: simple things like holding the door and saying “please” and “thank you,” and big things like being there when we lose somebody close, we go through a tough break up, we don’t get the part in the play or we don’t get into the college we have dreamed of for the last four years. This concept of “kindness” is something we need to carry on into our college years and beyond.

The second major problem I faced was when my oldest mentor and football coach, John Nowak, died. Coach Nowak taught me many things, but the major lesson I learned from him was to stick through tough times and to finish what I committed to. For example, I almost quit football my sophomore year, for I was in a tough spot both physically and mentally, and I didn’t see an end to that hardship. The one thing that kept me from quitting was knowing I would have to go to Coach and face-to-face tell him that I was leaving his football team. The thought of that scared the heck out of me, so instead of quitting, I stuck with it, got through that tough part and ended up playing on one of the most successful teams in Notre Dame history. But this advice from Coach Nowak does not only apply to football. This applies to any activity or commitment that we may take on in our coming years--from our studies to our relationships to our careers. The best advice from Coach Nowak is a quote, and it’s pretty simple: “Suck it up.”

Regardless of what we might face and what we might see in the future, we can get through anything with hard work, determination, and will power. All of these traits have been ingrained in us by the NDA staff and those around us; we are prepared for whatever life throws at us. We must use the tools that have been given to us from our peers, families, and teachers so that we can get through an unknown future. And just for fun, let me remind you. . . . . .if it doesn’t work out, you can always sit in a basement and chug coffee for four hours and have a wonderful life living in a van down by the river!!

Best Wishes, Class of 2019!

Volunteers from the Class of 2019 compiled this special senior issue of The Tritonian. Much of the tedious counting was done by seniors in Advanced Journalism as well as seniors in secondhour study hall who gave up their usual time in Sra. Dory’s room to count the responses for the Senior Awards.

Almost two-thirds of the seniors responded to our long ballot for senior awards, memories, wills, etc. College counselor Becky Bain gave us her list of students’ post-graduate plans, and hopefully we have all of the college decisions recorded accurately. Thanks also to Mr. Masarik, who had the infamous task of proofreading and editing all the suggested senior awards along with the comments by graduates for “Can you believe I…,” “Most Memorable Moments,” and, of course, the celebrated “Teacher Quotes.”

Special thanks must go to Anna Kaye and Sami LeFever, who spent the most hours of all in preparing this paper. These two young women mastered the InDesign program on their own and worked countless hours after school preparing the pages. No doubt there are mistakes and flaws, but hopefully you’ll enjoy the memories and the stories. You are a very special class, and we can’t wait to see all you accomplish in the upcoming years.

Senior Farewell Class of 2019 Mixtape

You guys, we made it!!!!!!!

I’ve heard once (or twice) that “growing old feels like you’re giving up your soul.” This is a lyric that has propelled me through this year. The thought of growing old sends shivers down my spine, and this graduation is the first time we’ve ever been faced with the realization that we will not be young forever.

So much of high school was a blur; we spent a lot of time waiting… for the next test, the next dance, the next summer. It was always “Someday.” We barely had time to catch our breath. These last few weeks of senior year were no different… except for the fact that we wanted to catch our breath. Someday is here.

Class of 2019, take a deep breath.

Notre Dame has given us so much more than an education. It has given us a story. I like to think of it as a song.

Each one of us has a different melody, a unique tempo. We’re all lucky enough to be able to sing along with each other.

Our songs are epic. My song of last summer was “Ghost Town” by Kanye West. I can’t tell you how many times I screamed “I feel kind of freeeeeee” in the car with the volume up, eyes closed, windows down. Nothing…. nothing compares to that feeling. Our songs have these moments woven into them. Sophomore year we all got our licenses, talk about freedom! We held hands in the choir room and sang “Hallelujah.” We soared all the way to Camp Randall and crescendoed in the stands together. We will replay these parts for our ever, we will replay them for our new friends, for our families and our future families. We will replay them for ourselves when we catch a glimpse of an old friend or lost habit.

Our songs have been sad. Sometimes clouds cover the sun. Some of this sadness was a solo. Some of it was a duet. Some a choir. Our class has faced tragedy AND Honors Bio. Our class has shouldered the stress of applications, denials, broken trust, defeat. But that is not our chorus. We know not to make the same mistakes twice.

We know how to handle failure. We learned how to persevere. Our voices grew stronger as a result.

Our songs are not pure noise. Sometimes they were silence. We held our breaths waiting to hear who our Mr. NDA was or when we opened the letter from THAT college. We know that sometimes, words are not enough.

Sometimes, all it takes is a look (especially if that look is from Ms. Mahlock).

Our songs are nowhere near finished. But our time at Notre Dame is. We experienced so much together, and now we realize that while all of this was happening, we were not simply living. We were growing up.

Next year, our ghosts will haunt these hallways. Our melodies will take a new turn. But, right now, together, our songs create a symphony. Maybe not a beautiful one, but certainly a strong one. Growing old might feel like you’re giving up your soul… but I’d rather give it freely to the ones that I call home. Notre Dame Academy, class of 2019, thank you for playing a role in my melody. Thank you for being my home. And, of course, remember who you are, and where you come from.
