As we update NDA’s Strategic Plan 2016-2018, we are excited to integrate strategic and school improvement planning in pursuit of our mission, vision and values. All planning is guided by the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools and complies with school accreditation requirements.

These standards and benchmarks are the result of broadly inclusive collaboration among leaders and scholars in Catholic institutions of higher education, bishops, Catholic school administrators and educators, and Catholic school supporters from across the nation. This collective expertise, wisdom, experience and enthusiasm provide us with a framework of universal characteristics for Catholic school excellence which inform and ground NDA’s strategic initiatives and help to secure a strong future for generations to come.

Honoring the past and celebrating the future of academic & athletic achievement Part I of a two-part series in which the new Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame will be showcased. Part I (Athletic Division) and Part II (Academic Division). Part II will be written about in the summer edition of Notre Dame Academy Magazine.

ith six high schools falling under the Green Bay Diocesan secondary education umbrella at different periods and dating back more than 100 years, countless scholars and decorated athletes have brought honor to those schools’ unified history.

Starting this year, the best of the best will be formally recognized with the creation of the Triton Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame.

The inaugural induction banquet will be held August 18, 2018, at Michels Commons Ballroom at St. Norbert College as part of Notre Dame Academy’s annual alumni weekend. A cocktail reception will start at 5:00 p.m., and the induction dinner and program at 6:00 p.m. On Friday night, August 17, the inductees will be introduced at halftime of Notre Dame’s home football game.

That said, the selection committee has already settled on the first two coaches to be inducted: the late Don LaViolette of Abbot Pennings and Ron Miller of Premontre. It also has selected the two championships teams: Premontre’s 1970 football juggernaut and its coequal, the 1971 Pennings football team.

Both were Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 1 state champs.

All of the selections, this year and in the future, will come from the six Catholic high schools that have operated in Green Bay and De Pere since the 19th century.

St. Joseph Academy (SJA), an all-girls school, was the first to open its doors in 1897. A year later, St. Norbert High School, an all-boys boarding school and day school for local students, was founded at the same time as St. Norbert College. Central Catholic High School, an all-boys school, opened in 1941 in the Columbus Community Club in downtown Green Bay and was replaced by Premontre High School, located on Maryhill Drive on Green Bay’s west side, in 1955. The former St. Norbert High School moved to a different building in De Pere in 1959 and was renamed Abbot Pennings High School, also an all-boys school.

A trip down memory lane, just from an athletic standpoint, is both a potent and wistful reminder of that.

Let’s start with the charter inductees.

LaViolette coached both football and basketball for 24 years at Pennings and was comparably successful in both sports.

He coached basketball from 1959-83 and compiled a 322-220 record. He won or shared six Fox Valley Christian Conference championships – it was the Fox Valley Catholic Conference prior to 1971 – and guided eight teams to the WISAA state tournament. In 1970, his Squires finished second, losing in the state championship game to Milwaukee Pius XI, 44-42.

In football, LaViolette coached from 1959-82 and was 14089-6. His crowning moment was winning the 1971 WISAA state championship.

LaViolette died in 2015 at age 83.

Miller, 79, was 66-20 as Premontre’s head football coach from 1967 to 1975. He won three outright FVCC titles and shared another in his nine seasons.

Coed Notre Dame de la Baie Academy opened in the fall of 1990 through a consolidation of St. Joe’s, Premontre and Pennings.

Premontre had become coed two years earlier.

Miller’s 1970 Premontre team finished 11-0 and beat La Crosse Aquinas, 6-0, in the WISAA title game played at Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium.

Collectively, thousands of students have made the honor roll at those schools, scores have been valedictorians and salutatorians and, no doubt, most have distinguished themselves in some way or another since they were given their diplomas.

Premontre’s entire offensive line – tackles Guy LoCascio and Steve Boex, guards Jerry Wied and Larry Herlache, and center Tom Fritsch – was named all-conference. Three other linemen – ends Dan Wilson and Terry Young, and tackle Ron Metzner – were named all-conference on defense.

Athletically, the schools produced a combined 33 state championship teams in 11 different sports in what started as the Wisconsin Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association in 1957 and became WISAA in 1968.

A refrain often heard throughout the 1970 season when people talked football in Green Bay was that the Cadets “were bigger than the Packers,” and the claim had some merit.

Since joining the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association in the fall of 2000 following the dissolution of WISAA, Notre Dame has won 23 state championships in 11 different sports entering this school year.

Metzner was 6-foot-5, 290 pounds; LoCascio, 6-4, 265; Young, 6-7, 210; and Boex, 6-2, 235. Seven of the eight all-conference linemen, all but the 190-pound Fritsch, weighed 200 pounds or more.

Considering the athletic success of all six schools, choosing Hall of Famers from among them will be a challenging task.

That same fall, the Packers’ nine starting offensive and defensive linemen averaged 6-4 and 251 pounds.

A five-person committee will select the inductees.

There will be five academic inductees, one from each of the following fields: Arts, Science, Education, Humanitarianism, Business, Ministry and Military Service. Those selections will be based on a combination of high school academic performance and post-high school achievement.

The athletic inductees will include two coaches and five players, along with two state championship teams with all coaches, players and managers being recognized. The five athletes chosen individually will be judged primarily on their high school achievements, although post-high school accomplishments will be considered.

Forms will be available online for alumni and friends to nominate potential candidates.

school to state championships by winning what was then called the St. Norbert College Invitational.

When Pennings won the title a year later under LaViolette, it finished 10-1 and won the championship at Lambeau Field with a 17-8 victory over Waukesha Catholic Memorial.

Mack scored 1,181 in just two seasons, including a Green Bay metro record 646 as a senior when he averaged 32.3 points per game. In college, Jansky lettered four years and Mack two years at Marquette University.

Pennings’ all-conference players that year included end Phil Arant and center Tom Knauf on offense, as well as defenders Kevin Callahan (DE), Mike Meeuwsen (IL), Larry DeCleene (LB), Jerry Clark (LB) and Dan Warpinski (DB).

While in this inaugural year the two coaches and two teams were selected from Premontre and Pennings, the other schools will have their turn, if not with some of this year’s individual selections, then in future years.

Clearly, the roll call of candidates, much less inductees, will be long and illustrious. Let’s take a look at just one position at one school, for example: the lineage of Premontre quarterbacks with their senior season of football listed in parentheses: John Fabry (1956), Jesse Kaye (1961), Mark Olejniczak (1969), Rick Lemerond (1971), Rick Peot (1973), Greg Knafelc (1976) and Paul Denny (1984).

Dillon’s last title was the first in WCIAA history and he was presented the trophy by team captain Gary Simoens and his other players in a Green Bay hospital bed, where Dillon died two weeks later at age 48. Simoens had scored four points in the final 14 seconds to lift St. Norbert over Pius, 50-47.

Former Green Bay Packers standout Ted Fritsch started coaching football at Central Catholic in 1952 and finished at Premontre in 1966. In 15 seasons, before there were post-season playoffs, he compiled a 69-28-4 record. He also coached basketball for seven years and had a 91-71 record.

Central Catholic’s list of luminaries included Jim Donarski, an all-FVCC lineman in 1948 who went on to earn secondteam Associated Press All-America honors as a guard at the University of Arizona in the fall of 1951; and brother Dave, a fullback who scored on runs of 36 and 53 yards when the Fabry and Kaye played at the University of Wisconsin; and Cadets stunned Mt. Carmel, 19-7, in 1951, the year the latter Knafelc at Notre Dame.

There were some Pennings’ quarterbacks during that same time frame who could be sprinkled into the mix, as well, including Remy Stephenson (1970), a three-year starter and another UW recruit; Paul Gigot (1972), the starter as a junior when Pennings won its state title; and Steve Bratkowski (1976), who went on to letter two years at Arizona State.

a senior in 1950-51, before lettering one year at Marquette; and 6-3 center Jim Scheel scored a school-record 33 points in a game and led Central Catholic to the semifinals of the state basketball tournament in the school’s final season before playing on an NCAA tournament team at Bowling Green State University.

Then again, not all of those quarterbacks were chosen allFVCC while there were others at both schools that were.

Central Catholic won its only state championship in baseball in 1952 with pitcher Larry Klaus winning two of the three games in the state tournament at Menasha, including a one-hitter against Racine St. Catherine’s in the quarterfinals.

However one sorts them out, the point is that the richness of the athletic history here runs through not just schools and sports, but even smaller spheres, including families with runs of siblings and successive generations of outstanding students.

But here the focus will be on the different schools.

Fred Dillon coached St. Norbert High to five Catholic school state basketball championships between 1936 and 1957. In 20 years as coach, his teams were 287-118-1, for a glittering .708 winning percentage. Dillon also was credited with a 75-30-4 record as football coach and won two St. Norbert Collegesponsored Catholic High School boxing tournaments.

Two of Dillon’s best basketball players, 6-3 Jack Jansky and 6-8 Joe Mack, scored more than 1,000 points during their time at St. Norbert; and as seniors in 1951 and 1956, respectively, led the W I N T E R

Along with Miller’s 1970 team, Premontre also won another state football title in 1978 under Dick Hietpas. The Cadets finished 10-1 and beat Fond du Lac Springs, 20-12, in the WISAA title game.

In 35 seasons of football, Premontre had nine first-team AP allstate players with the season in which they were chosen listed in parentheses: guard Mike Clark (1964), defensive linemen Dennis Maloney (1968), LoCascio and Wied (1970), linebacker Steve Mocarski (1975), defensive backs Ken Clusman (1978), Denny (1984), kicker Jay Ryskoski (1985) and defensive lineman Pat Richard (1985).

The AP all-state football team, it should be noted, is the oldest in the state, dating to 1945, and has traditionally been the most selective.

1990 All-State Basketball First Team Member, Kevin Rankin of Pennings Premontre also produced three NFL or AFL players: halfback and kicker Gary Kroner (Class of 1959), center Ted Fritsch Jr. (1968) and Knafelc.

Premontre’s 1982 basketball team won the WISAA title under Roy Smits and was led by 6-4 Pat Daul, the second leading scorer in Premontre’s history with 1,335 points in three seasons.

Tom Skaletski, a 6-7 center, was the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,387 points from 1966 to 1970. Skaletski played four years at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

The only Premontre basketball player to make AP first team all-state was 6-6 Darin Maccoux in 1985. The AP boys all-state basketball team dates to 1957 and has limited its first-team selections to five players.

Maccoux also cracked the 1,000-point club with 1,237; as did Kevin Heuvelmans (Class of 1973) with 1,223 and Knafelc with 1,185.

In 1969, when Premontre won its first of two WISAA state track championships, Bruce Bishop won the 100- and 220yard dashes, the long jump and anchored the winning 880-

St. Joseph Academy got a late start in sports because of yesteryear’s attitudes and mores regarding girls’ participation.

However, once WISAA initiated athletic programs for girls in 1972, St. Joe’s built a formidable program step-by-step, sportby-sport, despite not having a gym, a track, or any athletic facilities, for that matter, at the beginning.

The school started with three sports: volleyball, basketball and track.

Sandy Clark built the foundation for the basketball program after becoming coach in its second year and then Jane Bouche took it to another level. Bouche replaced Clark in 1978, compiled a 59-18 record in her four seasons and also led the

If there was a seminal event for St. Joseph’s athletic program, it was its 56-54, triple-overtime victory over previously unbeaten and defending state champion Appleton Xavier on Dec. 18, 1978. Down 42-20 after the third quarter, the Sajoacs staged a furious rally,

yard relay in winning the meet’s Outstanding Athlete Award.

Bishop also was a two-time all-FVCC offensive end in football.

outscoring Xavier, 24-2, in the fourth quarter to tie the score and eventually won in the closing seconds of the third overtime.

Brian Buss, however, won the most individual state track and field titles for Premontre with six. He won the discus four straight years from 1979 to 1982 and his throw of 191 feet 3 inches as a junior was retired as the WISAA state record. Buss also won the shot put in 1981 and ’82.

In addition to winning a state football title in 1971, Pennings also captured the 1990 WISAA state basketball championship in its final year of existence. Bob LaViolette, Don’s son, was coach and 6-11 Kevin Rankin was chosen all-state by the AP, one of only two Pennings’ players ever selected. The other was 6-10 Todd Danen in 1973.

Rankin later played at Northwestern University and ranked eighth in all-time scoring there entering this season. He also was Pennings’ all-time leading scorer with 1,026 points.

Over 31 seasons, Pennings also had three AP all-state picks in football: linebacker John Van Wassenhoven (1968), Arant (1972), and Todd Gregoire as a kicker in 1982 and as a kicker and linebacker in 1983. Thereafter, Gregoire kicked for the University of Wisconsin and led the Badgers in scoring four straight years.

Pennings never had anyone make it as a player in the NFL, but John Schneider, an all-FVCC running back in 1988, was general manager of the Seattle Seahawks when they won Super Bowl XLVIII.

Pennings also won a WISAA soccer championship in 1987.

Together, Pennings, Premontre and Notre Dame have been dominant in golf, winning eight WISAA boys titles with six different golfers from the schools finishing as state medalists.

A number of outstanding St. Joe’s athletes, in a number of sports, punctuated that moment many times over during the next 12 years.

The list included Molly Kapalin, who won the WISAA cross country title three straight years, as well as the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in the WISAA girls track and field meet from 1983 to 1985; and Michelle Reidi, who won the WISAA high jump four straight years from 1979 to 1982 and set a record of 5-10 as a senior that was never broken. Reidi also was the FVCC’s coplayer of the year in basketball as a senior.

Tackle Mike Rader (1991), defensive lineman Eric Mahlik (1995), running back Walter Dosh (2000), tight end and defensive end Joe Walker (2003), and kicker Vinny Pallini (2015) have been named AP first-team all-state in football.

Walker also was AP’s state player of the year.

Darren Rankin, Class of 1992 and Kevin’s brother, is the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball with 1,058 points, if you include his sophomore year when he played on Pennings’ state championship team.

Max McCormick (Class of 2010) was the first Notre Dame grad to reach the National Hockey League.

Chad Zehms was a WISAA cross country champion for Premontre in 1989 and for Notre Dame in 1990, and also won the 3,200-meter run in the WISAA track meet in 1990 and ’91.

Guards Natalie Berglin (Class of 2003) and Allie LeClaire (Class of 2014) were named AP first-team all-state in girls basketball and, subsequently, have had a big impact on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s women’s basketball program.

So many choices and still so many more, so it’s time to ask, “Where does one stop and let the process play out?”

In terms of state championships, the most successful sport at the Academy was softball. The Sajoacs won WISAA state titles in 1984, 1987 and 1988.

Along with its 23 WIAA championships, Notre Dame also won four WISAA titles in four different sports, including Division 1 football under John Nowak in 1992. Nowak, who died in July at age 69, also led Notre Dame to WIAA Division 3 state championships in 2003 and 2015.

In all, Nowak coached football for 31 years – four at Premontre and 27 at Notre Dame – and won 225 games. In addition, he won two WIAA Division 2 state track championships at Notre Dame, one with the boys in 2002 and the other with the girls team in 2010.

Notre Dame also won WIAA state championships in Division 2 girls basketball in 2001, 2013 and 2014; boys hockey in 2012; and Division 2 boys soccer in 2001, 2007 and 2008.

In less than 30 years, the school has produced a nearly endless list of outstanding athletes.

Welcoming A Principal

H

aving recently accepted the invitation to serve as the principal of Notre Dame Academy, Patrick Browne comes to NDA with close to three decades of experience in Catholic education. Beginning his career at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio, he spent his formative years working with the Holy Cross Brothers and Adrian Dominican Sisters before moving into leadership positions in the Diocese of Detroit and the Archdiocese of Chicago. He holds a Master's Degree in Education from John Carroll University and has most recently served as the principal of Our Lady of Humility School. Mr. Browne was an elected member of the Mundelein High School School Board where he served for three years and is a Clinical Supervisor for Western Governor’s University. In addition to his experience in education, he is an ultramarathon runner, an avid gardener, and a volunteer in a number of capacities for the PADS Homeless Shelter Program. Patrick lives with his wife Victoria who also taught for over 30 years and is now the Office Manager at the Micah Center in Green Bay.

CONTINUING A LEGACY

On a recent visit to NDA, I had the opportunity to attend morning Mass and meet with several administrators and teachers in preparation for my January start date. It was a day filled with the energy of new beginnings, the joy of positive social interaction and the peace of knowing you are in a community of like-minded people. Between meetings, I walked the halls, took a moment to visit classrooms, greeted students, and had time to read many of the plaques which adorn the halls and trophy cases. It was a day well spent and, while driving home later that day, I couldn't help but reflect on how the past and present are so intimately connected at NDA. Former teachers are referenced in conversations, the decades-old trophies are cared for as if they were won just yesterday, and many of the classrooms bear the names of former teachers and principals. There is an unmistakable sense of the past even as students move from class to class, enjoy lunch, or speak to their teachers.

To be on campus, is to be in the spiritual presence of those who committed themselves to Catholic education in the previous generations. There is an imaginative spark which causes time to meld, yesterday to be brought into the present and a sense that time passes at a slightly altered pace. "Throughout and beyond the centuries-old existence of their order, outstanding Norbertine men and women of heroic virtue remain sources of edification, inspiration, and models for daily life." These men and women are our inspiration as we embrace the calling to educate our students in the Catholic faith.

Having attended St. Norbert College, both my wife and I had friends who attended Abbot Pennings High School, Our Lady of Premontre, and St. Joseph Academy. My wife completed her student teaching at St. Joseph Academy, and one of my St. Norbert College roommates attended Abbot Pennings. While the three schools, which combined in 1990, played an integral part in our lives, (and St. Norbert College is considered 'hallowed ground' in the Browne house), it is only recently that I have become acutely aware of the debt owed to the men and women of the Order of St. Norbert and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Without their commitment, the opportunity to serve families and their children within the context of our Catholic faith would not be possible.

As I begin my fourth decade in Catholic education, there is a deep appreciation for the body of research which exists regarding effective pedagogy. We have data to support how diverse learners benefit from adjustments made in the delivery of instruction. We know more today regarding the benefits of One to One Education, 21st Century Learning, Brain Based Research and Social Emotional Learning. While this knowledge, and its application

ne in five children are affected with some form of dyslexia, a learning disorder that makes it difficult to read or understand words and letters. Caragan Olles was diagnosed with the disease in third grade, but instead of letting it hinder her, she turned it into a non-profit organization.

In March of 2013, Caragan, a sophomore at NDA, and her brother “I’m most proud of the fact that more and more schools are Carter Olles, NDA 2017, came up with the idea for Bright Young beginning to acknowledge dyslexia and be more aware of Dyslexics because of Caragan’s struggle with the disability. their dyslexic students in their classrooms,” said Caragan.

“After my family began watching me go through the struggles of having dyslexia, we were enlightened with a better understanding of what dyslexic students had to go through on a daily basis at school,” said Caragan.

Caragan could not do all of this alone. Her biggest help has been her brother Carter who has been there for her throughout the process of developing and expanding their organization and through her struggles with dyslexia.

Through this journey, the Olles family began connecting with other families with similar situations. They kept noticing the same thing: a lack of knowledge and resources for children with dyslexia.

Caragan also found out from her dyslexia tutor that a lot of families can’t afford a tutor for their child.

“He is always there to encourage me to reach for the stars.

When I was younger, he pushed me to advocate for myself to my teachers, so that my needs weren’t pushed aside or forgotten,” she said.

“We felt like we needed to do something to help the situation,” said Caragan and Carter have gone far since they first began, but they’re aiming to go much farther than the Green Bay area.

From this came Bright Young Dyslexics, a 501c3 non-profit organization that has raised over $80,000 so far for students in kindergarten through 12th grade throughout Wisconsin. The funds go toward assistive technology, funding for tutoring, and anything else that will help dyslexic students thrive in a classroom setting.

“I would like to set up different branches of Bright Young Dyslexics out of state to bring more awareness to schools and communities about dyslexia,” said the NDA sophomore.

Michele Mahlock Appointed to New Role Notre Dame Academy is thrilled to announce the appointment of Michele Mahlock to the position of Registrar/School Quality Specialist.

Mahlock has taught at NDA since 1990, and has served in many leadership roles, including Campus Minister, Staff Council chair, and co-chair of the Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Committee. She has more than 25 years of school improvement experience and has served on more than 20 accreditation review teams for Catholic schools throughout Wisconsin. She is trained as an AdvancED lead reviewer and is certified in use of the Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool As School Quality Specialist, Mahlock will collaborate with all stakeholders to help guide a process of systematic, intentional, and data-driven improvement in student learning and throughout the school. She will coordinate and facilitate data retreats, collect and document evidence and results of school improvement efforts, monitor achievement of the National Catholic Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Elementary and Secondary Catholic Schools, and maintain NDA’s relationship in good standing with the accreditation agency, AdvancED. GOLF: Senior Emily Conard competed at state golf this fall. She scored 188 at girls state golf and took 54th at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona GIRLS TENNIS: To top off an undefeated season, the girls tennis team competed at the team and individual state tournaments.

As a team, the girls fell to top seed Homestead by a score of 1-6 with junior Grace Purcell taking home the sole victory. Junior girls tennis players Julia Slusarek, junior Grace Purcell, and doubles team Kennedy Morgan/Madeline Darling also competed in the first round of state as individuals. The team took first at sectionals, and, remaining undefeated at sectionals, were freshman Rachel Van Hefty and doubles team Emma Del Frate/Emily Agen.

Andrew Zipp, NDA ’17 is a trombone player in the UW Marching Band Dr. Glendon Bogdon, CCHS 1953, was the 2017 recipient of the 20th annual 'Special Services Award' presented by the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Association. A 1971 graduate of Marquette University, School of Dentistry (MUSOD) and 1973 orthodontic graduate (MUSOD), he retired from practice in 2000. Dr. Bogdon volunteered in several departments at Clement Manor Health Care Center, at Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) Day and Headstart Day at Marquette University, School Of Dentistry, and by doing exams and sealants for Milwaukee Public School students.

Matt Ziemer, NDA 1998, and his wife Laura started up the Miracle League of the Lakeshore in Manitowoc in 2014. The Miracle League of the Lakeshore is a baseball league that serves children ages 4-19 who live with a physical or intellectual disability. On August 11, 2017, the Miracle League of the Lakeshore was honored to be selected as one of the stops made by Donald Driver during his “Thank You Fans” Bus Tour. Driver was one of the key donors when the league was in its early stages of creation, and, yes, that is Ziemer as “Homer,” the Miracle League’s Official Mascot!
