Self-Reported Psychological Wellbeing Designer Fractal Patterns in Interior Space

DESCRIPTION

Participants in this study shared their immediate emotional response to a Designer Fractal Pattern (DFP). Fractals are patterns that are scaled, iterative, self-similar, and commonly found in nature. DFPs are fractal patterns that are harmonious with an interior built environment and not alien to it.

The patterns were projected in the space. Participants drew a face on an emotional puppet and wrote down a few words to describe their emotional response to each projected pattern.

This research method was modified from a teaching tool used in pre-K and Kindergarten teaching of emotions, sometimes dubbed ‘emotion puppets’. The puppets were two-sided. On one side there was a Designer Fractal Pattern (DFP). On the other side was an outline of a face for participants to fill in.

Participants in this study created collages of an interior space where the central wall featured a Designer Fractal Pattern (DFP). The participants each chose a different DFP with its unique level of complexity, or fractal dimension. The study aimed to identify the implicit connections between the DFP's fractal dimension and the type of room designed by the participant.

The participants were instructed to conceive of a room that would feature the DFP on one of its walls; what would happen in the room, what would people do, and what would be the general atmosphere? The participants shared their completed collages with the rest of the group, describing the atmosphere that they imagine.

The collages, with a high fractal dimension patterns featured on their wall, lended themselves to loud rooms. They were rooms with activity and energy. While collages, featuring patterns with low fractal dimension, lended themselves to quiet rooms of relaxation and rest. Furthermore, as hypothesized, a majority of collages included natural elements. These natural elements are predominantly visual and auditory.

Neighborhood Identity CoDesign Methods for Policy

This project was focused on understanding the identity and character of the University District (Columbus, OH) through exploratory codesign methods. With a team, I piloted a series of activities both asynchronous and synchronous to better understand the unique character of a high-turnover population that characterizes the University District neighborhood. We began with a photo diary and descriptive activity that participants completed as homework. From there, the in-person activities explored the present and dreamed about the future. We utilized a character building activity to personify the neighborhood, and a sandbox activity to dream about the future.

The research results were shared with a community group to establish community strengths and services needed.

Interior Design of a Science Center Climate Change Awareness Center

This project is a proposed interior design plan for a Climate Change Awareness Center that engages visitors in a series of hands-on exhibits that show the effects of climate change. The interactive educational experiences are family friendly, engaging and scientifically accurate.

THE ME/WE EXHIBITION

As an extension of my training in interior design, I have learned about the improtance of museum education methodologies through hands-on experiences. Highlights in the collage of images below are two exhbitiios. The first is the ME/WE exhibition, a group effort to represent the mental health challenges of students on the Ohio State campus. The second is the Patterns in Nature exhibition, a community exhibition that highlighted three established local artists and several community submitted photographs.

In my exhibition design, I am interested in exploring possibilties of public pedaogy, interaction, and community building.

Fractal Curriculum

A participatory action research community project DESCRIPTION

I led a community project in collaboration with Dublin art Council and Ohio-based artists to bring public art to three public parks in Dublin, Ohio.

Three public art vessels, Fractal Boxes, were commissioned to professional artists recruited through an open call; Jonah Jacobs, Andrea Myers, and Karen Snouffer. Each artist created an outdoor installation piece inspired by fractal patterns. The Fractal Boxes were placed in public parks and held free activity booklets for the local community to use and enjoy.

I designed a fractal curriculum to span five booklets offered, free-of-charge, to the community of central Ohio, USA through the Fractal Boxes. These booklets were filled with fractal design activities to be completed outdoors. They were offered for 20 months, starting during the 2020 Covid Pandemic.

The booklets integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) principles by encouraging participants to notice fractal relationships in their experience of outdoor spaces, with the hope that these activities of observation will carry through to other environments. The booklets include activities on doodling, pattern development, ephemeral land art, and geometric leaf drawings.

Community Art Workshops and Wellbeing Nature Walks

Community-focused programming in collaboration with an Arts Non-Profit DESCRIPTION

In the course of a two year collaboration, I worked with the Dublin Arts Council in Dublin, Ohio to bring nature and wellbeing programming to the local community.

I developed pedagogy for three public nature walks, inspired by the practice of three local artists and connected to evidence-based research on the wellbeing effect of natural patterns. These nature walks were part of an umbrella of programming under the title Fractals: Patterns in Nature.

Additionally, I organized and facilitated the development of four community workshops. These experiences aimed to share art skills, medium-specific techniques, and information on the importance spending time in nature.

I founded tlp during the height of COVID with three of my fellow PhD students at the Ohio State University. Since then, membership has grown to 14 members.

Together we expose the messiness of the research process to the public witness and invite visitors to explore, experience, and engage in research with us.

Fractal Light Patterns

Dynamism of Fractal Light Patterns

DESCRIPTION

STILLS FROM THE MULTIMEDIA INSTALLATION

This project was a time-based narrative of a light memory.

I choreographed a short kaleidoscope animation of a fractal Ottoman window-sill. The LCD monitor, playing the animation, was covered by a perforated cardboard screen. The screen was patterned with an adapted Sierpinski's pyramid fractal pattern.

In a fully dark room, this multimedia installation evokes the quality of natural light filtered through tree leaves while utilizing a geometric grid for this mesmerizing effect. I explored fractal patterns through the lens of narrative and emotional stoytelling.

Cane Rush Application Locative Media and iBeacons

DESCRIPTION

CODING FOR iBEACON | EDDYSTONE BEACONS

Using locative media, and in particular, beacons, allows for the curation of an experience that is site-specific within a public space.

These themes are presented in Cane Rush, a project which explores and shares a hidden history of a forgotten tradition on The Ohio State University’s campus. Users experienced, through the cane rush application, a renewed connection by layering on a new culture and meaning to their familiar surroundings.

The project was a collaboration with Madison Sabatelli.

Pan’AR’ama

Speculative Design

DESCRIPTION

AR WINDOW INTERFACE DESIGN

Pan’AR’ama is a speculative design fiction project that is expressed in a designed window that allows users to overlay information on their surroundings. The project was conceived at the intersection of interests held by me and my two research collaborators. This incorporation of design directions was an exercise in cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Pan’AR’ama is a design for a portable window device. I worked with the team to explore the applications of Augmented Reality and projection mapping with public interior spaces. A strong emphasis was placed on the engagement of the window within the space, through an understanding of the space’s actors, artifacts, and atmosphere.
