Research Administration Training Programs

Why Training?

Last year NCURA launched an initiative to identify and catalog research administration training programs among NCURA members A survey sent to NCURA members was based on multiple elements that collectively describe a comprehensive institutional training initiative for research administrators.
Part of the interest in developing this new resource stems from the significant growth in recruiting research administrators across the country. With a limited number of experienced research administration personnel available, some institutions are offering dedicated in-house training to promising applicants who may not have extensive research administration experience. While NCURA’s educational programming continues to remain the best in the profession, the exponential growth of remote and/or partially remote working arrangements further argues for additional training that is specific to the institution.
This resulting resource provides standardized descriptive information about college and university research administrator training programs. As a disclaimer, it neither analyzes the design and implementation of programs and policies nor assesses their effectiveness.
This resource is organized both alphabetically by institution, and by NCURA Region to facilitate collaborations among regional neighbors.
Each individual institution’s response is represented in template format, and includes multiple elements:
• Program Description
• Target Audience
• Mandatory/Not Mandatory
• Associated Cost
• Continuing Education Required
• Content is Available to General Public
• The benefits to employees
• If the program supplements in-house training with NCURA materials and which materials
• How is training tracked?
• What unit manages the training program?
• Who delivers the training?
Thanks to all who contributed. We have sincere appreciation for the challenging work that has gone into the development of these training initiatives at each institution
ACKNOWLEDGMENT: A special thanks to the volunteers who developed the survey and compiled the data: Tricia Callahan, Christine Cline, Julie Cole, Robert Holm, and Jessica Yoder.

The “Compass” program at Auburn embraces both meanings as we try to guide research administrators through the myriad channels of knowledge they need to perform their job e.g. enhancing and improving support provided to researchers. Proceeding from the quote by Henry St. John “Truth lies within a little and certain compass, but error is immense”, the Compass Curriculum instills a heightened sense of responsibility in its participants to perform their job at the highest level.

We often wish we could redefine commitments that were made in the proposal because they are difficult to track, and we find ourselves scrambling to resolve shortages or recovery from internal sources at the very end. Join us as we go beyond the basic definition of cost share. Webinar hosts will discuss their experiences and share how they tackled cost share challenges throughout the life of the project. Case studies will be used, and best practices shared as you consider how to alleviate some of the administrative burden.
