NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHT MUSEUM

REOPENS,

Honors Returning Frontline Staff Heroes After a two-month temporary closing since December 26, some frontline staff are back to work for the reopening of the Museum to greet and interface with visitors. Angela Faulkner, Human Resources Generalist, said it’s important to the Museum to show appreciation to frontline staff, specifically tour guides, guest services representatives and retail associates, who are publicfacing, especially during the pandemic. “Our frontline staff are our heroes because we’ve had guests come from all over the world since we’ve reopened, and they have been fantastic and full of energy,” she said. Michaela Elliot, Guest Services representative for three years was anxious to get back to work. “I missed being at work altogether. I missed being able to hug my coworkers and have more interactions. We are like a big family,” she said. Faulkner credits the Operations team for providing a safe environment for frontline staff to return, including setting safety protocols, providing PPE and COVID training refreshers. “Although we all had a certain amount of anxiety, they still performed their jobs at top notch,” Faulkner said. Thomas McDaniel has been a tour guide for nearly three years, and says he missed the camaraderie from his coworkers, but also the visitors. “We’re the face of the Museum,” he said. “We’re the ones they’re going to remember when they come and when they leave.”

I write this with thoughts of YOU and your family, hoping that your days are brighter as we slowly come out of this pandemic, a time we, nor the Museum, have seen in our lifetime. I must begin by offering sincere gratitude to you for supporting our imperative work. As a nonprofit, we would not have been able to survive to this point. Serving at the Museum for more than 11 years as Chief Development Officer, my work has been fulfilling because of YOU, our donors, and we are always honored to recognize and share with you. After six impactful years of service, our former president, Terri Freeman said goodbye to the Museum in February. As a result of her leadership and partnership with the Board of Directors and staff, a visionary strategic plan was developed to take us into 2023. The Board is now working with a national search firm to find the next President by late Spring. While we are engaged in the search, we continue to work under strong leadership with our CFO Tee Jones now serving in the interim president role. We will keep you informed on the process moving forward. We reopened to the public on March 1 after closing at the end of 2020. We are operating with limited capacity, with the hopes of increasing visitors gradually through the summer, our peak season. We continue to provide our visitors and staff with a safe environment by practicing social distancing, wearing face masks and sanitizing throughout the day. Learn our new hours of operation and make a reservation to visit at www. civilrightsmuseum.org/visit. During this unprecedented time, we experienced a paradigm shift in how we serve our visitors, donors, and friends and even our day-to-day activities in the Museum. Although virtual programming began out of necessity, it’s here to stay because it has expanded our reach beyond our locale and as a result, new audiences across the country and the globe have been impacted. Through these events, talks and online exhibits, we hope to continue to provide a platform for you to learn and understand that our present often mirrors our past. Thank you for continuing to go on this journey with us. We look forward to better days ahead.

KING DAY 2021 GOES VIRTUAL For the first time in the Museum’s history, NCRM hosted King Day virtually to engage a national audience. Usually filled with thousands of visitors and buzzing with hands-on activity for a day of service in MLK’s honor, the museum’s campus was quiet, while visitors came to the courtyard to pay homage to Dr. King. Still, global supporters were able to engage and learn more about Dr. King from their devices. A standout feature included a series of music videos to highlight key galleries throughout the Museum. The videos included performances from a cross-section of music genres from R&B to Blues and Gospel by partnering artists, Tyke T, Karren Brown, Adajyo and Garry Goin. “King Day is a day that’s very festive, and there’s always a lot of music when we do it in person,” says Dr. Noelle Trent, Director of Interpretation, Collections and Education. “We anchored it in music this year with these different performances, and it gave people something that they had not seen before.” Dr. Hasan Jeffries, Ohio State University associate professor of History, also shared insights and musings on Dr. King’s impact throughout his life. Children weren’t left out of the celebration. A special Small But Mighty book reading featured My Uncle Martin, written by Dr. Angela Harris Watkins, King’s niece, to present him as not only an iconic world leader, but also a relatable family member. To view King Day 2021 videos and Small But Mighty Storytime, visit www.kingday.org.

NCRM AND PARTNERS MAKE STOPS ON The National Civil Rights Museum hosted Journey to Justice, in partnership with Just City, a nonprofit formed for a fairer and more humane criminal justice system. The virtual symposium offered space for changemakers to present research and share their thoughts on the criminal justice system and social issues. The three “stops” on the journey covered history, policing and prosecution during a pandemic and returning citizens. “The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. could not ring truer, ‘It is not possible to be in favor of justice for some people and not be in favor of justice for all people.’” said Veda Ajamu, Museum Director of Community Engagement and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives. “We must work towards a ‘just’ criminal legal system for everyone.” Just City has been working with individuals and judicial entities on the local and state level for five years. “In the decades since the progress of the Civil Rights era, money bail, the over-policing of brown and Black communities, unfettered prosecutorial discretion, deadly conditions in jails and prisons, wrongful EVERY DAYS A NEW PRISON convictions and the death penalty have become our country’s most acute Civil Rights issues,” said Josh Spickler, Just City WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1990 AND 2005 executive director. “We were proud to join the Museum and lift up the voices we heard at Journey to Justice.”

As a follow-up to Journey to Justice, the Museum presented an exclusive screening and discussion of The Vanishing Trial, a documentary that sheds light on trial penalty and its role in accelerating issues of mass incarceration. The event was hosted in partnership with FAMM (Families Against Mandatory Minimums). A CONVERSATION WITH

RUBY BRIDGES + CHELSEA CLINTON CONNECTS GENERATIONS The National Civil Rights Museum hosted a multi-generational conversation with trailblazer, Ruby Bridges, the first Black girl to integrate New Orleans schools in 1961, and Chelsea Clinton, advocate, author and daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. The platform served as a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the historic school integration and the release of Bridges’ book, This Is Your Time. Bridges is featured in Hillary and Chelsea’s work, The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience. The two women shared personal stories, Southern roots and congruent pathways that have brought them where they are today. What you saw was intergenerational and interracial dialogue, which is quite profound,” said Dr. Noelle Trent, Director of Interpretation, Collections and Education and event moderator. “And so there was this natural relationship between the two.” Rewatch the conversation HERE.

RIHANNA SHARES SECRET NCRM VISIT Global entertainer and philanthropist, Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty, shared her visit to the National Civil Rights Museum for MLK Day 2021 with fans on her social media platforms. When Fenty got cabin fever in Summer 2020, she “took a road trip” to Memphis to visit the museum after hours unannounced. She was so moved at the balcony, she encouraged her fans and supporters to make the visit a priority.
