WINTER/SPRING 2022

Moving Forward With Our President | NCRM Corporate Equity Center | King Day ‘22 Recap

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT As a former board of directors member at the Museum for 10 years, I accepted this role having a fundamental understanding of its mission, work and impact. Over 100 days later, I’ve learned so much more. Through conversations with stakeholders from local residents and leaders to national thought leaders, I know in the most absolute way that the work the National Civil Rights Museum does is essential now more than ever. Consequently, the vision for the Museum is clear. We have identified three focus areas in which we already have voice or momentum. Now we want to become leaders on these very specific issues. Building on our Excellence in Education As a museum, education leads all that we do. We are proud of our existing layered approach to reach everyone. There is an even greater opportunity, through our exhibits, collections and collective knowledge to design and build a unique curriculum around civil rights, and in turn, offer the national landscape of our collective history. Acknowledging the Impact of Arts and Culture Similar to the Harlem Renaissance, an era in which Black Arts flourished and set the tone for the challenges of that time, there is now a recognition of arts and culture through the lenses of African Americans and other people of color. That same soul-fulfilling art has reemerged today and, we are positioned to highlight these contributions that propel the movement to teach and lead others.

FAREWELL FROM BEVERLY SAKAUYE

Boosting Economic Empowerment Dr. King spent his final days advocating for economic empowerment of Black sanitation workers. Just as things have changed, they have remained the same. Aligned with economic power is health equity. We’ll be engaging top leaders in health to lend credibility to resources to execute strategies that will benefit us all. We’re off to a fantastic start! We recently celebrated 30 years in existence as a local, national and global leader for civil and human rights. We’ve also recently launched a Corporate Equity Center in partnership with AutoZone, an invaluable champion of the Museum and our efforts. Up next is intentional engagement with tomorrow’s leaders, aged 21-40, or Keepers of 306. They will be responsible for having historical knowledge to ensure the movement progresses after our elders who have worked tirelessly have gone. As we work on our three focus areas, we will continue to meet people where they are to educate, inspire and activate. We will continue to integrate the heart with the proverbial head of change, which has already been established through policies and laws that uphold civil and human rights. Thank you for your unwavering support of the Museum. Your time, action and financial support have helped this sacred place not just sustain, but thrive. I look forward to greater collaboration and partnership for years to come. In the Movement,

Russ Wigginton Russ Wigginton President

My amazing journey at the National Civil Rights Museum ended on February 11th – all things must. After 12 ½ years at the NCRM, it has been the fitting culmination of my 50-year career in nonprofit development from Chicago to New Orleans to Memphis. I will never fully leave the Museum as I am a part of its family and they area part of mine. To you donors, volunteers, supporters, Board Members, and staff, whose relationships I treasure, you have my neverending gratitude. It is YOU who have inspired me to do the work we have done for the benefit of so many. THANK YOU. It has been an honor to serve with all of you. I look forward to seeing the new heights that Russ will take this Museum. Wishing you all the best, Bev.

AUTOZONE GIVES $5 MILLION TO LAUNCH NCRM

CORPORATE EQUITY CENTER

After the murder of George Floyd in Summer 2020, executives at corporations nationwide made promises for change.

“We were trying to figure out how to make a difference,” said Bill Rhodes, AutoZone CEO and longtime NCRM board member. After having key conversations with corporate colleagues and strategizing, the solution became clear. Rhodes pledged $5 million from AutoZone to launch the Corporate Equity Center in partnership with the National Civil Rights Museum. The Center, housed in the Museum, will create sustainable programming that focuses on combining the historical knowledge of the Museum with the need for strategic and culturally relevant leadership. “AutoZone’s direct support is a direct reflection of both our commitment and responsibility to push for diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments everywhere,” Rhodes says. The Center’s signature program, the C-Suite Initiative, is built around eliminating racial bias and increasing the representation of Black C-Suite executives across the board in all industries. First Horizon Bank was the first company to participate in the pilot.

Unpacking Racism, the Museum’s premier intensive focusing on candid conversations about implicit bias and systemic racism, will also be offered as a part of the Corporate Equity Center. “The National Civil Rights Museum is the perfect place to house the Corporate Equity Center as it preserves the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and serves as a catalyst to inspire action and create positive social change,” says Veda Ajamu, Managing Director of DEI Programs and Community Engagement. “We thank AutoZone for investing in our work to make change from our exhibit floor to now, the workplace.” The NCRM thanks AutoZone for its major financial investment and its partnership with a special acknowledgment of Sr. Vice President and Controller and Customer Satisfaction, Charlie Pleas’ invaluable support. For more information about the Corporate Equity Center or how your corporation can become involved, visit civilrightsmuseum. org/corporate-equitycenter.

KING DAY 2022

WELCOMES BACK IN-PERSON CELEBRATION

The King Day Hybrid Celebration was a success as over 4,100 families visited the Museum along with over 2,000 virtual visitors. The celebration delivered approximately 800 take-home children’s craft kits, a generous delivery of 1,379 lbs of food to the Mid-South Food Bank food drive, and also donated 30 pints of blood to the Vitalant blood drive that could possibly save 90 lives. The volunteers also donated a total of 600 hours during their Day of Service to the National Civil Rights Museum. Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, and attendees for an impactful celebration!

MUSEUM MAKES UPGRADES TO BUILDINGS

THANKS TO STATE PARTNERSHIP

An integral part of the National Civil Rights Museum experience is the condition of the campus buildings themselves. The Lorraine Motel building, courtyard and parking lot are owned by the State of Tennessee, but operated by the Museum. Throughout the 30 years of existence, this main building and grounds have undergone continuous improvements to enhance the visitor experience. Thanks to an ongoing grant from the State of Tennessee Department of General Services and Lorraine Civil Rights Museum Foundation, the Museum has been able to make key upgrades and maintenance repairs to the buildings that will ensure their longevity. After more than 325,000 people visited the Museum in 2019, its last full

YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST

STARTS GIVING EARLY

On MLK Day, 9-year-old Evan Dishmon (pictured on the right) wasn’t attending a parade or going to a program. He was selling hot chocolate from the end of his driveway as a way to raise money for the National Civil Rights Museum. The hot chocolate, “sold” for between $1 and $50 per cup, because the Dishmons accepted donations in lieu of payment and some friends and neighbors were especially generous.

year of operation, the main building experienced significant wear and tear, according to Sherryl Tucker, Director of Operations. “Our job in Operations is to make sure that we maintain the entire Museum complex,” she says. “So we have a valued relationship with the State of Tennessee.” The roof was recently replaced and banners, signage and a visible logo with our name have been added to the rear of the Museum so that visitors can easily locate our building. Additionally, new skylights have been added to the outside of the Museum. “The relationship with the State of Tennessee has been crucial,” Tucker says. “They help us in multiple projects, and the Museum very much appreciates the great working relationship.”

Evan raised $650 dollars, with the help of his family. He split the money into equal donations for NCRM and another local nonprofit. “Because it was Martin Luther King, Jr Day, I wanted to raise money for the NCRM, so they could have more activities that would inspire children to want to become civil rights leaders,” he said. Evan’s mom, Brooke Dishmon says her son’s dedication to service work reminds her of the immortal words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
