May 12-18, 2025
The 5th Annual North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival will return to New Bern from Monday, May 12 through Sunday, May 18, 2025, bringing eight days of creativity, community, and culture. Showcasing 37 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists—both new juried participants and returning award-winners—the festival celebrates the art of painting outdoors, or en plein air, a French term meaning “open air.” Rooted in the traditions of Impressionist masters like Monet and Degas, plein air painting focuses on capturing fleeting light, mood, and atmosphere.
New Bern, the first capital of North Carolina and a town rich in Southern charm and history, serves as a perfect backdrop for this artistic celebration. Known as the “Capital of Love” for Nicholas Sparks fans, its historic district, riverfront views, and Tryon Palace offer irresistible subjects for painters. The surrounding towns of Beaufort—home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum—and Oriental—the sailing capital of North Carolina—also offer stunning venues, along with other scenic sites across Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico Counties.
Festival headquarters will be at the Historic New Bern Farmers Market, less than two blocks from Tryon Palace. The venue will host workshops, gallery talks, art sales, and demonstrations. New this year are exciting additions like daily Gallery Talks, musical evenings, a Sip & Sketch event, and an expanded youth program that includes 15 new sessions for homeschooled, high school, and after-school students.
Renowned artists Shanna Kunz and Phil Starke will lead workshops, sharing their expertise with aspiring painters. Starke, a member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America, brings a distinguished background to the festival.
Approximately 400 new paintings are expected to be created during the week, with artists competing for top honors, including the Best of Show Koffenberger Award. Attendees can meet artists in real time using a mobile app, attend pop-up exhibits, and enjoy interactive events like the Quick Paint competition for youth and amateurs.
Local residents will play an essential role by hosting artists, volunteering, and participating in the vibrant activities throughout the week. With its blend of art, community spirit, and scenic beauty, the North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival promises an unforgettable experience for artists and visitors alike.

Phil Starke has been painting professionally since his graduation from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. He has prestigious gallery representation and has been teaching classes and workshops throughout the country for over 20 years. He participates in numerous exhibitions and gallery shows annually. He is a member of the “Plein Air Painters of America” and “The California Art Club”. He has also published 2 books: “Small Works – Landscapes”, and “The Plein Air Tip Guide”.
What do you get when you take a workshop with Phil?
This 3 day workshop will focus on understanding how to simplify and mix color to suggest the light in the landscape. As artists we want to be able to interpret the color we see, not copy it. It is important to suggest shapes and objects and not get bogged down in detail. Phil will paint 2 demonstrations a day and work individually with each student.

As a plein-air painter, I strive to capture the essence of a place through light, color, and texture. Wandering through cities and parks, I discover scenes that invite meditation, painting the ever-changing environment. My work explores the interconnectedness of people and their surroundings, evoking joy and reflection. Working on Oscar-winning films has given me a deep understanding of storytelling and composition, which informs my art. Being a passionate painter and member of the Royal Institute, I hope to inspire appreciation for the world we call home.
Natalia Andreeva is an artist from Tallahassee, FL. Her classical European art education was influenced by Eastern philosophy, resulting in a blend of spontaneous expression and classical realism. She explores landscapes, still life, and portraits, showcasing nature’s subtleties and human beauty. Natalia is a Signature Member of the AIS, past-president of the TaWS and vice-president of the PAP-SE.

I strive to place you right by my side, in the middle of the action – by being there. During a recent trip to Key West, setting my easel up in the water captured the joy of playing in the surf. For another piece, peeking over a wall to paint helped capture the feeling of dining at the water’s edge. In Southern France, painting within the fruit and vegetable stand of the farmer’s market transported us behind the scenes. This immersion transforms us from spectator to participant – from observing the painting, to climbing into it.

I have been painting for more than 20 years. In 2010 , I was accepted into the Hudson River Fellowship by Grand Central Atelier. We resided and painted for a month in the Catskill region of upstate New York . Two years ago, we relocated from New York city to a suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina, I have become much more involved in en plein air. I spend time observing and being inspired by my surroundings and to paint with my mind, then I do thumbnail sketches. I like bold loose brushstroke to express my feelings.

I believe an artist reveals the sublime in the ordinary. How you paint something is more important than what you paint.

After a successful career in portraiture, navigating Wall Street’s corridors, Cashwell pivoted towards Fine Art and Plein Air.
Through self-discovery, he mastered impressionistic techniques with a modern twist, earning acclaim and invitations from art communities across the nation.
He quotes, “I try to capture the moment in a modern/impressionistic style that makes you feel the time and place.”

Renowned artist Lyudmila dazzled the art world in 2023, clinching an astonishing 22 awards in national and international exhibitions, 9 of which were first place. She whimsically dubs her painting style “create-destroy-create” – a rhythmic dance of gestures on canvas. Lyudmila’s talent has earned her numerous Best in Show accolades and features in esteemed publications like International Artist magazine. Inspired by nature’s beauty, her work shines in prestigious plein air events like Easton, Bluff Strokes, Telluride, Lighthouse, Glaciers, Suffolk, and New Bern.

Although I’ve always had an interest in art, it wasn’t until well into my adolescent years that I stood before an actual oil painting. An aunt with an interest in culture took me to see a famous collection of 19th century portraits and landscapes. I was not only astonished by the technical prowess of these artists, but felt in many of the paintings the artist had unlocked something deeper than mere representation. Perhaps a reflection of truth through beauty that great art contains. A mystery that makes a work of art alluring and enduring. As an artist it’s that elusive quality that I strive for.

A sense of place. That is the goal of my landscape paintings, for the viewer to “see” what I am seeing and to feel that is a place they have been or would like to visit. Plein air painting inspires me to capture the quality of the light that sets off that connection. Many of my paintings depict the pinkish-blue tones of early morning light or the amber tones of late afternoon. I have recently begun entering a few national competitions and I have been delighted to be included several times.

Inspired by Spanish painter, Jouquin Sorolla and Russian painter, Sergei Bongart, my passion is drawing and painting from life. I enjoy being outdoors painting places and subjects revealing the essence of everyday life.
I was fortunate to have a father who was a successful illustrator teach me the basics of how to draw and paint, sharing his knowledge and love of the fine arts with me. I find it important and fulfilling to also share this knowledge and everything I have learned throughout my artistic journey, as well as my art, with others.
A work of art without a message is like an empty postcard—just a canvas with paint. We are all storytellers, using different mediums like books, photography, music, or art. Rather than trying to fit your story into the finished painting, develop it before you even start on the canvas.
John’s work encompasses several genres: Plein Air and studio landscapes, still lifes, and figures: using acrylics, oils, and watercolors. His paintings are surely representational and narrative at times, but the imagery is not about the pictorial. He uses the subject matter as design elements to capture natural phenomena, moment in space and time and mood of event. John believes that painting is not just the celebration of vision, but rather a quest for experience. In this sense, his paintings is not a recording of facts seen. It is the process of interpreting a fleeting muse.

Lisa Engle frequently paints from the family’s boat while on the TN River or on the shores of nearby Pickwick Lake. Seeking to capture the incredible beauty of the moment. She shares her love for painting outdoors by leading the annual Renaissance on Main Plein Air event in her hometown of Adamsville. Martin Geiger is a figurative painter and draftsman. He attended art school in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 2019, after four years. Words that describe his work might include light, geometry, space and activity. He is constantly chasing implied grandeur and action, compelling him to explore constantly to find the most invigorating subjects in his immediate area. While he tends to return to oil painting, his curiosity often lures him into other mediums like graphite, charcoal and watercolors.

Plein air artist’s work from direct observation to paint in nature, capturing their subject matter in real time. For Millie, this way of working is both her passion and her calling. The studies she paints from life are then used as references to paint a much larger format in the studio. Her goal is to invite viewers into her painting to have their own experience.

I was born in Albania. I was in 4th elementary class, 11 years old, when I was told by my teacher that I could draw that map better than the others [a class work we were given to draw the map of Albania] because I was gifted with a talent. That was it, I found my game and I never stopped playing that game, graduated college for art and then the Academy of Art in Tirana and, still keep on playing. I never get tire of it.
I post my art on the media, sometimes very often, and someone asks me…when do you take a break?…and I answer…that’s what I’m doing.

Rajendra KC’s work is defined by contemporary realism, transparency, and expressive brush patchwork, capturing the essence of nature with a distinctive watercolor technique. Rajendra’s passion for watercolor has led to international recognition, with his paintings held in private collections worldwide. Recently, he was honored with the First Place Award at the Floyd Plein Air Biennial 2024.

I took to Plein air painting around 2006 and have been an avid practitioner ever since. Cityscapes and waterfront vistas are my favorite subjects, and I often paint such scenes in a reportorial manner.
Eight ‘best-in-show’ awards at major Plein air events. First place in the Art Renewal Center’s 15th Salon in the Plein air category. Participant in the American Masters Show at Salmagundi Club in 2017. Certificate of Excellence at the 2018 International Portrait Competition.

Creating representation of beauty and intrigue in the landscape, whether light and shadow, atmospheric conditions or interesting shapes, is my journey. The challenge outdoors is in working with quickly changing conditions to portray the essence of a scene in an aesthetically and emotionally pleasing manner. My objective is to create a visual orchestration that has its’ own voice, speaking a lyrical narrative that conveys mood and presence. My work has an artistic quality that bears my signature, figuratively speaking, through each brushstroke.

Fascinated by life and learning; each new place, each day, offers endless inspiration. Kirk strives to capture the feel of that day, weather and setting. To connect, he often paints barefoot, dancing while creating. Exciting or mundane, it’s an opportunity to share with the viewer the “vibe” of the place & the people. The color, brushstrokes, composition and the tempo are uplifting.
“When painting, I feel all is right with the world!”

There is a mood to a painting. Every brushstroke is laid down with this one intention—to emulate the soul’s disposition. Guiding my presentation is the overriding, singular power, of the mood of the soul. This quality, relied upon, becomes my voice and is formed from the beautiful, bittersweet mystery of life that occupies me, that overwhelms the greater part of me, and that looks for expression in everything I see.

I am an “Alla prima” painter which means painting “all at once”or “wet-on-wet” creating an ordinary things. My paintings represents bold colors and spontaneous brush marks with limited palette. Painting a plain air style painting and teaching is an integral part of my art career. I started painting small and often and this habit is leading me to my ultimate goal. I received a Grand prize award and First place Quick draw Prize at Falls Church Plein air event in Virginia in 2024.

Whether painting en plein air or in the studio, Rascoe strives to simplify his subject and composition into a non-rendered three dimensional tale that allows the viewer to actively jump in and participate in the story being told.
He paints alla prima or wet on wet all in one session with oils, and his style can be considered contemporary impressionism. His work is often inspired by the outdoor lifestyle of hunting, fishing and agriculture.

My painting process is deeply rooted in the essence of life, as I find inspiration by capturing the intricacies of subjects in real-time. The vitality of observing and interpreting essential elements like lighting, values, and color harmony in nature becomes the bedrock of my artistic expression. Through this immersive approach, I elevate my work to new heights. Despite accolades and recognition, my current focus centers on the gratifying journey of evolving to create expansive artworks based on my field notes and plein-air experiences.

Art is a field of knowledge where there is no limit to perfection ! Having received a classical education in Russia , where such masters as Levitan and Korovin worked , I continue to improve my skills by studying with masters of America and Russia both at work shops and remotely . One of the huge advantages is to live in the era of the Internet in a free country ! And I am proud that over the past three years my works have become finalists in Annual Shows in some of the most prestigious organizations of America.

I have no choice but to create art. When the chaos of life threatens to engulf me, art is my stillness, my meditation, my bliss. It’s just me and my scene and the story I’m trying to tell. But, what completes the process for me is sharing it. To see what I consider my gift, become a joy for others fills me with happiness.

I have recently found myself intrigued by small bits of the greater scene; the corner of a building, an edge of marsh, a glimpse down a narrow path. I prefer to capture these moments en plein air – to represent the essence of that which made me stop and paint. My current body of work was created during several years of transition; trading in the commotion and energy of village life for the peace and solitude of the woods. I’m finding home in each painting; a quiet corner, solitary shadow, or sympathetic quality of light.

Because I work full-time, I paint mostly in the studio, and to me, plein air is a luxury rather than an everyday routine. But when I go outside, I first observe and saturate myself with the feelings, sounds, and details of the place and its subjects… I built that painting first in my mind, thinking through the colors I would use, the composition, the mood of the future painting… Some of my plein air studies are pretty detailed, to capture as much as I can, and then I decide in the studio, what to keep and what to let go.

My approach to painting outdoor landscapes is to capture the grandeur of creation.
I paint spontaneously, seeking a raw and straightforward depiction while accurately conveying my experience of the subject.
Buyer feedback indicates a gradual increase in naturalism in their paintings over time, aligning with my intention. By presenting a rough sketch, I prompt viewers to mentally complete the painting through their own interpretation, fostering a deeper engagement with the artwork.

For me, painting is a prolonged meditation on the beauty of creation. I find inspiration in the drama of light and shadow. I’m often drawn to marine and coastal scenery. But I find urban and industrial subjects compelling, too. Recurring themes in my work include the passage of time and the various ways human beings give shape and form to the environment.

Each plein air painting is a performance, a collection of observations, a living document of my presence and attention in the field. My work is honest, and challenging to make. I retrieve the effects of light within specific times and places, creating gateways to memories and shared realities. Yes, the outcomes are paintings, but the process is performance art, public art. The large-format watercolor media suits me, providing challenge, offering speed and accuracy. I experiment constantly and welcome the chance to talk with curious onlookers – feel free to chat me up while I work.

“How long does it take you to do a painting?” said the passerby. “About an hour” I say. If you really want to know, I started in 1966 sculpting with sticks and wire along Lake Zumbra, Victoria, MN. Jump ahead to 1976, University of Minnesota, paired with a semester at Tian Jin University in 1981 ending in a BA in Architecture. Thirty-nine years of designing public buildings, dropped me at an easel with the thrill of water, paint and textured paper. It has taken me 56 years to do one painting at a time.

I carry a sketchbook everywhere I go which keeps me loose and ready to jot down the seeds for larger works. I’m drawn to color and pattern, such as boats in a harbor, fields of flowers, or moving clouds. Rather than a single focal point I often try to depict intangibles such as atmosphere, harmony, and movement. But it’s about more than just good design. I feel it’s important to fall in love with one’s subject. A painter should reveal to the viewer something that is connected to them, even if small or simple.

Art had been a common intertest in our family. Growing up we sisters drew, paint and talked art all the times, In our formal art school days we had open drawing sessions and paint outs at our house. While other two sisters majored in sculpture and design I graduated in painting. For over 30 years I had only been painting from life but since last few years i started using photo references which helped me progress in my work.
