MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

NCN Health held our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 26 November. The AGM is an opportunity to table our Annual Report and celebrate our Staff Service Awards and Annual Awards. th We would like to acknowledge the staff who celebrated years of service and/or who won awards The dedication, professionalism and compassion of our staff make an enormous difference to the health and wellbeing of our community Whether working directly with patients or supporting the organisation behind the scenes, their contribution strengthens NCN Health and helps ensure that people across our region receive the care and support they need.

FUNDING ANNOUNCED FOR DAY STAY DIALYSIS UNIT AND SAME DAY CANCER SERVICE PLANNNG

The Minister for Health MaryAnne Thomas visited NCN Health Cobram on Thursday November 27 During this visit, the Minister announced a $255,000 investment to support the planning for a new day-stay dialysis unit and same-day cancer care service at the health service To further assist local patients, the Minister also announced a one-off grant for NCN Health to deploy two dedicated patient transport vehicles

These vehicles will make it easier for people to travel safely and comfortably to their appointments, while the new service is planned for This funding announcement is a very exciting and significant step toward securing Dialysis Services at Cobram Campus It also recognises the very real and challenging issue of transport and access faced by members of our community. We look forward to updating staff as we move through the planning process

SITE PREPARATION COMPLETE FOR THE ‘NEW LODGE’

After many months of planning and detailed design the early works to pave the way for the new Public Sector Residential Aged Care Facility at NCN Health Numurkah began on October 21 The new facility will eventually replace the current Numurkah Pioneers Memorial Lodge Building, which is nearly 50 years old. The new facility will be built across the road from the current ‘Lodge’ in Hurley Court

Crow constructions recently completed early works on the project which included the demolition of several dwellings on Hurley Court, general site clean up and preparation

The tender to appoint builders to the project has closed and applicants are being reviewed

Once a builder is selected, construction is set to start mid 2026. We are excited to keep the community up to date on this significant project

NCN HEALTH 5 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN

Thank you to all our community members who provided feedback either online, in person or via the hardcopy surveys circulated for the next NCN Health Strategic Plan. the voices, opinions and priorities of staff at NCN Health are very important in helping set the direction of the health service and we really appreciate your time and contribution. Our Strategic Planning consultant Nicole Amsing is now working on drafting the final plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors. Once finalised, it will be available on our website It’s important to remember that this is only the first step. The plan isn’t a static document it’s a living guide that will continue to evolve as our services, our communities and our workforce change. Over the next five years, we’ll keep revisiting, reviewing and testing the plan to make sure it remains relevant and aligned with our goals

Your insights and involvement will be key to keeping the plan meaningful, practical and responsive to the needs of our organisation and the communities we serve. We also understand and have seen through our consulting process, that not all feedback is positive, and that is ok. We aim to continually improve and create conditions for listening and are open to understanding how we can do this better.

Thank you again for your engagement, we look forward to working together for the next 5 years and beyond.

As this is the last newsletter of the year, on behalf of NCN Health I wish you a happy and health Christmas and New Year period. A reminder that our Urgent Care Centres are open 24/7 in Nathalia, Cobram and Numurkah, year round. Please ensure any visitors to our home or towns are aware we are here for them, should they need us.

Cobram Dental and Medical Teams

I am nominating the Dental and Medical clinics for their collaborative work in providing excellent care to a client. the client who is a patient of both the dental and medical clinics presented to the Cobram Dental Clinic with severe pain from a large tooth abscess. The client has an extensive history which included intellectual disability, poor mental health and poorly controlled epilepsy The client also has very poor oral health and requires significant dental intervention. The client initially presented to have a tooth extracted and treatment of the abscess. Unfortunately, the client had a seizure before the procedure could be undertaken It was decided that given the complexity it would be best if the patient was able to have a general anaesthetic and multiple extractions attended

However, the waiting list for public patients to have such intervention at GVH was up to 6 months for urgent cases. The dental team in consultation with the medical clinic decided that they needed to provide letters of support and advocate to expediate the care for the client. Over following days from the failed extraction, the patient presented multiple times to the UCC in severe pain. Deciding that intervention was required immediately, the senior dentist (Dr Alice Gubbins) discussed the case with Dr Abu and Dr Dumitrescu. The patient returned to the dental clinic and was given a premedication by Dr Dumitrescu to try and avert a seizure. Dr Gubbins then provided local anaesthetic and extracted the tooth and drained the abscess. Dr Dumitrescu remained in the dental surgery throughout the procedure Shortly after extracting the tooth the patient had a seizure and was supported through this by the team and then transferred to UCC for observation. The cooperative work between the dental and medical clinic staff ensured that the patient received the most appropriate care, in a timely manner, close to home and care which recognised all of the patient’s needs. This was an excellent outcome for the patient Key staff involved were Dr Alice Gubbins, Kristen Williams and from the medical clinic Nicole Hughes, Dr Abu and Dr Dumitrescu. however, others in the team were also involved.

Nicole Hughes – Cobram Medical Receptionist

Thank you for your compassionate, understanding nature and your professionalism" I strongly endorse these sentiments, Nicole considers the patient’s needs at all times without even thinking about it. Life Membership for Dr Tyndall

NCN Health congratulates Dr Pauline Tyndall, who has been awarded Life Membership of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) a prestigious honour recognising her long-standing contribution to general practice.

A couple of weeks ago, I received an invitation from the RACGP to attend a ceremony where I would be awarded Life Membership. At the time, I hadn't planned to go partly because I felt a little overawed by the idea

It was actually a patient who changed my mind. They happened to overhear the reminder phone call and, as I hung up, they surprised me with a cheerful and encouraging comment: "You should go it's a great honour." And they were right

Very recently, I attended the ceremony. I had the joy of sharing the experience with the lovely Dr Caroline Kamenjarin currently working in GVH ED and a GP anaesthetist of many years. She, too, was being honoured. (That's her in the picture.) Her late husband, Dr Michael Kamenjarin, had been a visiting general surgeon at Cobram Medical Clinic, and was much loved in our community.

It was, indeed, a great honour to be recognised as a long-serving GP and to be made a Life Member of RACGP. But it's more than just an individual achievement

So, on behalf of "we GPs," I want to extend sincere thanks to our team. Some of us have been around a long time, all doing our best to support our patients and improve their health. But we know that the work of general practice is not done in isolation.

To the current and past staff medical, nursing, allied health, administrative and to those from nearby and former workplaces: thank you You've all played an important part in my GP journey, and in the work we do collectively. Thank you for doing your best, for supporting us, and for helping to make a difference in our communities

And to those mentoring or simply working alongside our younger doctors our interns, residents, and registrars it’s worth remembering that their journey, though long and often challenging, is made lighter and richer through your encouragement and support Perhaps, one day, they too will be invited to accept a similar award. And when that moment comes, I hope they will look back and remember, with gratitude, the people who helped them along the way

With appreciation and gratitude,

The Care Finder Program supports vulnerable older people who would not be able to arrange services without intensive support and do not have a family member or friends who can help.

Who can receive assistance from a Care Finder?

Care Finders are not for everyone They specifically help older community members who need intensive assistance to access aged care and other supports.

• be eligible for government-funded aged care. They may:

• have difficulty communicating because of language or literacy problems

• be reluctant to engage with aged care or government

• be in an unsafe situation if they do not receive services.

Consumer Story

Details:

Department: Cobram X-Ray

Story:

The consumer is a Nathalia resident who was referred by her doctor to get an X-Ray. Not wanting to go travel to Shepparton she called NCN Health Numurkah “Parking is an issue in Shepparton, and then you have to hobble into the health service, access can be an issue.”

Unfortunately, when she rang to make an appointment in Numurkah there was a wait of over one week.

“The receptionist asked me where I lived and if I was able to get to Cobram When I said yes, she said they could fit me in that day. I got straight in the car and drove the Cobram, I parked right outside the front door and only waited 5 minutes to have my X-Ray done”

The consumer said she was very impressed with the access to the health service and the new look front entry and acute/urgent care area.

“I haven’t been to Cobram since the renovations were completed and I thought it looked lovely, so much more space and very easy to get around.”

During 2025 the consumer has also been managing an infection in her heel due to an underlying health issue.

“I have had an infection that has caused a wound on my heel and have been visited by the District Nurses from both Nathalia and Numurkah twice a week I find their wound care knowledge is excellent, their care is perfect. I think we are very lucky in this rural area to have access to the health services that we do”

Reflections / Recommendations:

This consumer story is an example of the importance of care provided close to home For many people in rural areas, travel can be a significant barrier to accessing timely health care whether due to distance, mobility, or simple things like parking and building access. It also shows the value of flexibility across our campuses. When an appointment wasn’t immediately available in Numurkah, staff were able to quickly find an alternative at Cobram, allowing the consumer to receive the care they needed without delay. The responsiveness of our team and the consumer’s positive

Consumer Story

experience of Cobram’s upgraded facilities demonstrate the impact that service accessibility, well-designed spaces, and good communication can have on patient experience.

Finally, the consumer’s comments about the district nursing team reflect the ongoing importance of high-quality community care. The ability to receive skilled wound care support at home not only reduces the need for hospital visits, but also provides reassurance, trust, and continuity of care.

Do you have a story you’d like to share about your experience at NCN Health? Your story can be a positive experience or include opportunities to improve our service delivery, For more information on how to share you experience with us, contact ncncommunications@ncnhealth.org.au
