A Message From President Bo Black

Welcome to the 2022-2023 Directory! Take a moment to review the Jolly Roger project by Manning Masonry, Inc. on the cover page and project details on page two. Congratulations to Manning Masonry for such a fine representation of masonry and to all the participating associate members for their contributions to the project.

Helping Build a Sustainable World

Argos Cements for Masonry provide our customers with durable, lasting color to enhance any masonry project.

are proud that

high-quality products are made in the USA from all-natural, sustainable materials. In fact, sustainability is a

part of

Our annual direc tory serves as a record, a reference document, an advertisement and a source of revenue and would not be pos sible without a great number of advertisers. Please take a moment and review the ads by our masonry contractor members and associate members in this year’s directory. Thank you to all this year advertisers for your support!

2022 has been a season of change. We have elected a new Executive Vice President in Ryan Shaver and are in the middle of transition of leadership from the steady, effective hand of Mr. Lynn Nash to Ryan. The Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Future Staffing committee continue to work alongside Ryan and Lynn in this period and look forward to many exciting announcements in the coming year.

Many successful parts of our association returned this year from a COVID break. A thriving Certification program, Apprenticeship and High School Skills Contests and our Annual Convention were all huge successes this year.

Despite some uneasiness in our economy, as an association we have gained ground in revitalizing relationships with our high school masonry programs statewide and are more successfully putting high school students to work as apprentices. Our member ship is on this rise. Opportunities to gain back market share for masonry wall systems is at an exciting new place with the passing of the CMU check off.

The North Carolina Masonry Contractor’s Association remains the strongest association of its kind in the nation and thanks to all of you for your trust and support we strive to continue to be the premier group of masonry contractors and associates in the nation.

Hope everyone has a safe and blessed summer and look forward to seeing you soon.

NCMCA Workforce Development

In early 2018, NCMCA brought on Ryan Shave as fulltime Workforce Development & Training Co ordinator. Ryan was a national masonry champion (1993) as a student of award-winning instructor Doug Drye at Mount Pleasant High School in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He was a successful young journeyman mason at McGee Brothers Company and later managed his own masonry company. He was drawn to teaching and proved to be very successful in attracting and training young folks for masonry careers at Mount Pleasant High School. During his teaching career, he produced state and national masonry champions. He was Mount Pleasant High School Teacher-of-the-Year and a finalist for Cabar rus County Teacher-of-the-Year in 2014. He holds the “Master Trainer” designation with the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NC CER.)

As Workforce Development and Training Coordina tor, Ryan serves as an ombudsman for masonry train ing especially within public education. He maintains an extensive database of instructors, school adminis trators, Career and Technical Education Directors, and other decision makers. He maintains regular contact with masonry classes and coordinates the involvement of masonry contractors and other masonry industry in local high school programs. Ryan uses his industry connections to recruit instructors for new programs and his extensive personal experience to help new and struggling instruc tors become successful masonry teachers.

Ryan has assumed leadership responsibility for NCMCA sponsored masonry competitions as well as other competitions for which the masonry industry is involved. Ryan takes a significant role in the NC SkillsUSA Regional and State Ma sonry competition and the Annual State Fair Masonry Apprentice Con test. Ryan serves as cochairman of the SkillsUSA National Conference Annual Masonry Championship competition and serves on the NC SkillsUSA Board of Directors.

Creating the new position was somewhat of a financial “leap of faith” for the organization, con sidering that the expense of maintaining the WDTC almost doubled the association’s annual operating budget. NCMCA leadership asked members to step up to support this important NCMCA initiative and a number of companies have done just that including Brodie Contractors, Carolina Masonry Unlimited, Gates Construction Co, Huntley Brothers, Joyner Masonry Works, McGee Brothers Co, Michael J Rogers Masonry, Pinnacle Masonry, Raleigh Chapter NCMCA, Whitman Masonry, General Shale, EZG Manufacturing, Tucker-Kirby Com pany, Adams/Oldcastle, Manning Masonry, Rush Masonry Managment, New South Construction Supply, Custom Brick & Supply, Edgar Boettcher Masonry, Southeastern Contracting, McArt Masonry, Masonry Unlimited of Cherryville, Old

North State Masonry, Pyramid Masonry, Griffin Masonry, and the Metrolina Chapter of NCMCA. Most have made a multi-year commitment. Contact the NCMCA office to learn how your company can financially support NCMCA workforce development.

In 2020, Shaver led the effort to purchase and outfit NCMCA’s first mobile training unit, seven by sixteen travel trailer that pulls behind the Association’s truck for training, recruiting, and competition events all across the state.

In 2020, Ryan began utilizing the new training trailer to begin a training program for apprentices working for NCMCA members firms. Sessions have been held in Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Asheville.

Ryan has successfully partnered with Apprentice shipNC and the NC Community College System to implement a pre-apprentice program that allows high school masonry students to work on masonry projects

for companies with registered apprentice programs to earn high school credits as well as experience and good pay, the first of its kind in the state. Details of the NCMCA Masonry Pre-Apprentice Program:

- Must have completed NCCER- Core and Sustainable Construction

- Must be 16 Years Old

- On the Job Training = 135 Hours Minimum

- Guaranteed $12.00 per hour starting pay ($14.00 per hour recommended)

- Enables the student to be eligible for an additional high school credit

- Certificate of Completion awarded

- Participating firms must be members of NCMCA in good standing

NCMCA Masonry Contractor Certification Program

The North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association (NCMCA) provides masonry contractors in the Carolinas an opportunity for extensive professional development and continuing education with the NCMCA Masonry Contractor Certification Program.

In addition to increasing the profes sionalism of masonry contractors, the program is also targeted for specifica tion writers, architects and owners as a means to pre-qualify masonry con tractor firms for building projects.

NCMCA provides two levels of certification for in dividuals. Contractor firm foremen, superintendents, project managers, and middle management can become “Certified Masonry Professionals” (CMP) by completing a minimum of eight day-long classes and documenting five years of experience in the masonry and/or construc tion field. Company principals, owners and upper man agement can become “Certified Masonry Executives” (CME) by successfully completing ten daylong classes and documenting at least five years of experience. All CMP and CME candidates must reaffirm their pledge to abide by the NCMCA “Standards of Conduct.”

Companies themselves become “NCMCA Certified Masonry Contractors” by maintaining a required per centage of NCMCA certified individuals on staff and by documenting company history.

A total of eleven classes are included in the certifica tion curriculum and include instruction on occupational safety management, basics of masonry materials, specifi cations, masonry special inspection, design details, codes and standards, testing, grouting, structural engineering basics, blueprints & specifications, estimating and bid ding, and courses on good business practice and people management.

Experts from around the country instruct the classes, most considered to be the leading authorities in the field of masonry construction and operations. Class participants must pass an exam at the end of each class to obtain class completion credit. To maintain cer tification, individuals must earn a minimum number of continuing education credits per year.

The NCMCA Certification Program is governed by a board of nine “governors,” consisting of appointed experienced NCMCA ma sonry contractors members, an architect representative of North Carolina AIA, a representative appointed by the Carolinas Concrete Ma sonry Association, and an

appointment by Brick Industry Association-Southeast Region, each serving a three-year term.

As of the summer of 2022, 300 individuals and thirtyfour companies have become NCMCA certified.

Now that a significant number of individuals and companies have be come certified, NCMCA is proceed ing with an ambitious program to market certification for use in speci fication documents and as a means of ensuring quality masonry instal lation performed by the documented top professionals in the industry.

Suggested wording for including a NCMCA Masonry Contractor Certification requirement in bid specifica tion documents:

In 2001, NCMCA began a masonry design competition as part of Professor Patrick Rand’s “Architectural Construction Systems” class at North Carolina State University’s College of Design. Teams participate in the competition to design and model a hypothetical masonry in-fill building section as a graded class assign ment. Winning projects earn participating students tuition awards from NCMCA’s Sigmon Memorial Scholarship fund, named in memory of Randy, David, and Dwayne Sigmon.

In 2011, the program expanded to Appalachian State University.

Pictured left, the 2021 Appalachian State team winning project by Daniel Kahill, Javier Fuentes and Shea Marlowe. Pictured right, the 2021 NC State winning team of Jack Dalton, Lucas Stott, Gabrielle Schiltz, and Kunal Bhardwaj.

Major funding for the Sigmon Memorial Scholarship comes from the proceeds of the Annual NCMCA Golf Tournament.

The 2022 Tournament is Thursday September 22 at the Mill Creek Golf and Country Club in Mebane, NC. The tournament is always the fourth Thursday in September, weather permitting.

Protecting your relationships.

In the design and construction industry, there is no better way to protect your relationships than by using AIA Contract Documents. As the Industry Standard for over 120 years, our pre-drafted agreements and forms define the relationships and terms involved in your project, ensuring all parties are aware of expectations. Developed with input from key stakeholders, and recognized by courts across the country, AIA Contract Documents protect your project from start to finish.
