SLHL A FEW WORDS

As

COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

I reflect upon the featured projects in our September issue, it is apparent to me that “change” is the prevailing theme. This history-rich issue demonstrates the power of starting anew. It seems reasonable to say that history is synonymous with change. Times change; fashion changes; thoughts change; people change, and history unfolds with each set of changes. In our urban feature (pages 30 to 35), change is what brings two couples together at the PRICE PRITCHETT renovated, historic Chase Park AUTHOR, STRATEGIST AND SPEAKER Plaza, as they reconnect and begin new chapters in their lives at their residences there. The “gifts” – renewed friendships, an idyllic locale and time to enjoy the best the city has to offer – are abundant. Changes to a sprawling Frontenac home encourage family-oriented entertaining in the fabulously transformed indoor and outdoor spaces showcased in our suburban feature (pages 36 to 43). Here, the “treasures” are the times spent with family and friends at the best place of all – home. Our winning Garden of the Year (pages 44 to 49) is an ever-changing setting that reveals nature’s magnificent beauty. Garden enthusiast Jeanie Hood uses color, texture and whimsical, natural touches to spotlight a garden that blossoms with change while staying true to its roots. The blessings, according to Jeanie, are never- ending. Change. When I came to St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles four years ago, I dove in, embraced it and have always worked with passion to bring inspiration and ideas to the pages of the magazine. And, in the moments when I closed my eyes and felt as if I might be drowning in stacks of paperwork, all I needed to do was open them, take a breath and look around. The “gifts” were all around me – wonderful projects, designers, builders, architects, colleagues, and all of you, our dedicated readers. Your generosity has been overwhelming and unforgettable. With excitement and the opportunity for another “change,” I look forward to a new chapter in my life, retirement, and a little more time with my family. And I’ll accept the “gifts” along the way with an open heart. There is one thing, though, that will never change. No matter where I travel in this world, I will always come “home” to St. Louis. All the best,

“Change always comes bearing gifts.”

Using reclaimed lumber, artisan Michael Moore handcrafts exquisite furniture pieces that are destined to become heirlooms. These eco-minded, one-of-a-kind treasures add history, charm and warmth to any room, while leaving a light footprint on the planet.

Eye of the Beholder CRAFTSMAN MICHAEL MOORE EMBRACES THE BEAUTY THAT LIES BENEATH THE RUBBLE BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

Michael Moore is a visionary. He sees what others can’t. And he builds it. Using mostly reclaimed Missouri lumber from old houses, barns or any building that is being torn down, Michael handcrafts unique, oneof-a-kind furniture. “Using salvaged wood gives a furniture piece a charm and warmth you just can’t get using new lumber,” says Michael. “It instills a sense of history when you add corbels from an old church to a sofa table or door panels from a razed building to a hutch.” John Michael Originals Furniture Company began in a garage in Hannibal, Missouri, in 2001. “I’ve always had an eye for antiques,” says Michael, “and have enjoyed going to flea markets. When I saw the furniture that had been crafted from salvaged materials, I was intrigued.” What started as a hobby has grown into a bustling business that includes a 20,000-square-foot warehouse and nine employees. Michael’s son, John, works alongside his dad, crafting furniture and coordinating color schemes. “We call our look ‘shabby chic with color,’” says Michael, whose furniture is painted, stained and then sealed. Customers can choose from seven standard hues, and Michael can also customize a color to a client’s needs. John Michael Originals’ designs lend themselves to several looks,

from French Country to a lodge look or a cottage style and are shown at Riverside Originals in Hannibal, at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, Canada, and at stores throughout the Midwest and the southern United States. Locally, customers can purchase the line at Three French Hens in Wildwood. Owner Jeanie Hood is proud to say that John Michael Originals is one of their top-selling furniture lines. “Michael’s talent is unmatched. He can build anything to a customer’s specifications,” says Jeanie. “He takes something so old and creates a thing of beauty and function.” From dining tables, hutches, wine racks and vanities to bookcases, end tables and consoles, Michael’s designs are limitless. “What brings me great pride is that the furniture is made in Missouri,” says Jeanie. Sure to become heirlooms in their new homes, the extraordinary designs that are John Michael Originals have their own stories to tell, and thanks to Michael, the endings are always happy. SLHL DESIGN Q+A Unique pieces from all over the world – including Ireland, Israel, Singapore and every state in the U.S. – find their way to Gloria’s studio.

Designer Sketch HOME TOWN:

Preserving the Past GLORIA HAMLIN, PRINCIPAL RESTORER AT HAMLIN’S RESTORATION STUDIO, BRINGS NEW LIFE TO CHERISHED TREASURES EDITED BY KATIE UNDERHILL PORTRAIT BY COLIN MILLER/STRAUSS PEYTON

Q +A

How did you become involved in the artistry of restoration? It started as a hobby about 20 years ago. I’ve restored thousands of things over the years. I’ve trained with one of the leading conservators in the United Kingdom, who has worked with Buckingham Palace. I hold three certificates from the South African Academy for Ceramic Conservation with Distinction. We live in such a disposable society, and restoration is one of those last vestiges of preservation. We’re in the business of preserving your family’s history and memories. Restoration is a rare commodity in the art world. It’s a lost art. There are only a few of us, and we’re upholding an important tradition. What you collect today will be tomorrow’s antiques.

UNIQUE RESTORATION

S:

Gloria’s restorations are often centuries old. She once worked on a piece of glass that dated back to the 1st century. SPECIALTIES:

What types of collector’s pieces are you able to restore? Our restorations run the gamut, from simple, heartfelt things to museum pieces. We restore pottery, jade, ivory, glass (without chip grinding) and more, as well as ceramics, including china, bone china, porcelain and earthenware. We can fix previous restorations that were done incorrectly, and we can also recreate any part that’s missing from an object, such as an arm or a hand on a figurine. What does a restoration entail? I spend a lot of time researching the piece before I begin. We preserve its integrity by staying true to the original object, so I don’t grind or drill – it’s invasive and irreversible. I don’t add or take away anything that wasn’t part of the original, and everything is done in-house. Basic repairs involve dismantling,

Hamlin’s Restoration is the only authorized Lladró® res torer in Missouri, the only recommended restorer of Capodimonte in the U.S . and highly recommended by M.I. Hummel®.

cleaning and reassembling. More complicated restorations entail filling in chips, creating missing pieces, sculpting, matching colors for airbrushing and hand painting (we create our own colors, which are hand-matched to the originals) and hand polishing. A simple repair can take one week to one month, while a full restoration can take three to 18 months. We’ll take the longest route if it’s the best route; it’s a lengthy process to achieve perfection. See page 66 for design resources.

n Sidney Street in the historic Benton Park area of St. Louis, you’ll find two amazing, multi-tasking, award-winning chefs “with full plates.” Their culinary talents and seasonally evolving menus are punctuated with energy and incomparable flavor. At the Sidney Street Cafe, under the direction of owner and executive chef Kevin Nashan, and at Niche, with owner and executive chef Gerard Craft at the helm, guests are treated to dining experiences extraordinaire. Whether enjoying dinner at the highly awarded locales or entertaining at home with menus customized by either of the two forward-thinking chefs, every dish is unforgettably superb. Native St. Louisans Nina Schmid and Alex Engelsmann love to try new dining experiences around the city, gathering casually for dinner, as well as hosting “evenings in” with friends. Nina works for Lexington Design and Furniture (her background includes a focus in historic preservation), and her design interests match up well with the acclaimed

Sidney Street restaurants. For a perfect end-of-summer get-together, the couple invited a small group of friends to dine on scrumptious selections prepared by chefs with a passion for customizing menus for their guests. The finest, freshest ingredients, including homegrown herbs and vegetables from Sidney Street Cafe’s own 100-yard culinary garden, provided an ultra-local, seasonal zest to much of the early autumn-inspired party fare. Kevin’s philosophy: Keep it simple and use honest ingredients. “Our menu encompasses the freshest seasonal ingredients, and by doing so, we stay true to our Sidney Street roots,” he says, describing the restaurant’s ambience as having a “rustic elegance.” At Niche, Gerard explains, “We like to take fresh ingredients, including fresh fish flown in from around the world, and think outside of the box – in flavors, textures and presentation. the elements, keeping the purity of the flavors, but serve foods in a way that makes you taste them differently.” For interior designer Mim Phillips, the two bistros are favorites. Instinctively, Mim added wildflowers from her own garden and antique collectibles from her travels to punctuate the evening’s tablescapes. Her stylish touches added a “design flavor” of their own to complement the fresh cuisine and lively atmosphere of the occasion. Both urban restaurateurs and chefs credit their teams in helping them carry out their culinary visions. For a host or hostess with “home” as the party destination, the chefs incorporate a combination of passed appetizers and multicourse, plated meals that transform an ordinary dinner party into an event to remember. Both are also happy to reinterpret a signature family dish for party guests and bring a taste of the hosts’ family history to any menu. See page 66 for design resources.

Beautiful History Two couples turn the page on a new chapter in their lives and find their place in history at St. Louis’ crown jewel—The Chase WRITTEN BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB GRIMM

O

ne might say that The Chase Park Plaza is a place where many St. Louisans connect and reconnect. Such is the story of two couples who, after twenty years of friendship, are reconnecting in what can only be described as a “fairytale.” With lives that have unfolded over two decades, Jan and Jack Crider and Susan and Dick Langdon are adding yet another chapter to their “story” at this legendary St. Louis landmark, where dreams really do come true. Towering high above the historic Central West End and surrounded by the lush landscape of Forest Park, The Private Residences at The Chase Park Plaza offer more than upscale condominium living. “You buy a lifestyle at The Chase,” says homeowner Jan Crider. She and her husband, Jack, along with their dear friends Susan and Dick, have embraced this cosmopolitan culture that is at once energizing and serene. Sue Langdon was no stranger to The Chase, having lived in an apartment there 25 years ago when she and Dick were dating. She even served as concierge for a time.

“After we married,” says Sue, “we moved to Jacksonville, Illinois, where Dick worked as a cattle rancher and farmer. You can imagine my surprise when, after 16 years, Dick suggested a move to the city! I was thrilled to move ‘back home,’ and Dick has become a regular city boy.” With a smile, Dick adds, “It’s so great to be able to walk over to Forest Park to golf.” The Criders were also looking for a perfect fit. “After living in literally half of our space in a huge condo in Chesterfield, we downsized to a smaller unit at Lindell Terrace in the Central West End. The Chase offered the right amount of living space, plus all of the great hotel amenities and a location that is perfect for our lifestyle. Jack and I both fondly recall many visits to The Chase for the entertainment, and I even attended a high school class reunion in the Khorassan Room,” says Jan. Like the Langdons, Jan and Jack Crider enjoy active, healthy living. A retired teacher and wrestling coach, Jack still works part-time at Forest Park Community College. He and Jan (she is a retired financial consultant) both take advantage of Santé, The Chase’s state-of-the-art fitness facility, and Jack loves golfing with Dick in Forest Park. The Criders’ and Langdons’ condos, similar in layout yet disparate in style, each clearly illustrate the personal stories of their owners, thanks

to Karen Pepper of Edwin Pepper Interiors. “My clients were starting a new chapter in their lives,” says Karen. “It was so important to build upon their history while designing spaces that would welcome them into the future.” Karen eagerly met the challenge, and just as an illustrator so deftly defines a story, she began setting the scene for her clients’ new adventures in high-rise urban living. In Sue and Dick’s condo, Karen chose the bright, bold colors her clients adored, such as cobalt blue, crimson red and ochre yellow, establishing a vivid palette that would immerse her clients in happy hues and giving a fresh perspective to their traditional furnishings. “The introduction of ochre with the blue and red gives the space

confidence, almost a swagger,” says Karen. French-inspired, the Langdons’ condo reflects a mix of different provinces and styles. Stunning Persian rugs marry all of the colorful hues, amplifying the rooms with warmth and a breath of luxury. For the Criders, Karen created a transitional space that spoke quietly, yet spoke volumes, with an art deco-meets-contemporary inspired design. Drenched in several shades of a soft mushroom hue, the walls wrap the condo in classical elegance. Karen’s deliberate use of subtle patterns, pale colors and casual fabrics infuses the room with a simple glamour that punctuates rather than overpowers the space. “Red becomes the counterpoint of this vivid monochromatic décor,” explains Karen, “and is peppered throughout.” Alive with opulent, eye-catching accessories, artwork and accents, each condo conveys unrepentant luxury and classic style in distinctively different ways. As a designer, Karen lets her clients provide the clues, interpreting their likes and dislikes to create a “feel-good” environment that mirrors their taste and lifestyle. “When creating a design plan for my clients, I borrow from their

past and then stretch toward their future,” says Karen. “Preserving the past while moving ahead is key to maintaining a sense of history in a new space. The Chase itself is a great example. This classic landmark is the epitome of chic, urban living – sophisticated and energetic, yet so firmly rooted in St. Louis tradition, making it timeless and classic.” The Langdons and the Criders agree. And they’ve discovered the delight of urban living at the landmark Chase Park Plaza – a true gem in the city. See page 66 for design resources.

trolling up to the dynamic home and outdoor setting, a prelude of style and presentation set the stage for carefree living – and good times are just a step away. For Diane, a busy mother of three and partner in a new business venture, and her husband, Tim, the CEO and owner of a successful St. Louis-based company, enjoying life with their family and friends is what makes all of their hard work so worthwhile. “We love to entertain and spend time with our family and friends,” says Diane. “We wanted our home to be a warm and inviting place to share with them.” Interior designer Pamela Calvert, Allied ASID, was brought on board to create such a space. Having worked with Tim and Diane on previous homes, Pamela knew what her clients had in mind. “Tim and Diane are warm, gracious people,” says Pamela. “They wanted a home that was all about gathering together, inside and out.” From the moment you enter this impressive home, you get the feeling that you just might want to stay awhile. And if you’re lucky, you’ll end up spending a good deal of that time in the masterfully composed lower level. Outfitted for fun, this extraordinary space speaks to the kid in everyone and still leaves a lot

38

of room for the party sophisticate. Basically a blank canvas at the outset, the space was literally reborn. Pamela was challenged to think outside the box to create a partyscape like no other. “I couldn’t have done this without architect Jane Ann Forney and engineer/builder Pete Gass of The Lawrence Group,” beams Pamela. “They truly brought my design ideas to life.” An ensemble collaboration, the talented team from The Lawrence Group produced a spectacular setting, where having fun is second nature. Natural stone walls wrap the space in organic warmth, while a semicircular bar with a stunning underlit gold onyx counter glows beneath an intricate tin ceiling. Nearby, a pool table with a convertible ping-pong top awaits competitors who just might be practicing shots in the golf simulation room, watching the latest flick in the home theater, pumping some iron in the gym or tapping their feet to the tunes filling the air from the nostalgic jukebox. Separated from the bar area by two substantial stone archways that hug a large two-sided gas fireplace is yet another cozy spot for gathering together, playing games, watching TV and just relaxing. Fabulous furnishings from Niche enhance the overall coziness of the fun-filled, lower-level space.

Since her clients are voracious readers, Pamela thought it only fitting to tuck library walls into the hallway that leads to a lower-level theater room. But the biggest surprise is a 12-inch-thick “secret” door that opens to a hidden powder room. “It’s definitely a conversation starter,” says Diane. A textured mosaic, scenic forest wallcovering from Belgium makes a bold statement. Opposite: A spectacular semicircular bar with an underlit gold onyx top is surrounded by ample swivel stools from Niche that are covered in a red-dyed alligator hide. A sleek spacesaving drink ledge is also topped with underlit gold onyx. Behind the main bar, a SubZero wine cooler and beverage center keeps cold drinks on hand, and a butler’s pantry gives caterers room to maneuver. Two large archways hugging a see-through gas fireplace highlight natural stone walls. With two flat screen TVs from The Screening Room, a jukebox, pool table with a convertible ping-pong top, and a dining area leading out to a private courtyard, this is truly a happy haven for the family.

“We love how our home flows easily to the pool deck, lower patio and gardens.” DIANE, HOMEOWNER

Entertaining Élan Pamela Calvert, Allied ASID, shares tips for party panache. She and homeowner Diane will open Savvy Surroundings, a furniture, gifts, accessories and design firm, this fall.

t When designing a large entertaining area, it’s important to make sure that the space can comfortably accommodate many guests, yet maintain a cozy intimacy for just a few. Creating multiple conversation and gathering areas is key.

t A daybed is a great alternative to a sofa. Open on both sides, it helps to keep the conversation area versatile.

t A drink ledge with stools, such as the one in Tim and Diane’s billiard room, adds seating for players or spectators without taking up a lot of space.

t Pub tables are the perfect size for mingling with guests. STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM SEPTEMBER 2010

Indeed, it couldn’t get any better than this. And then you walk outside. “Wow” is really the only word that comes to mind as you suddenly realize that the party has only just begun. The finale could not be more expressive. A breathtaking complement to their home, the resort-like paradise that unfolds exquisitely melds the indoor and outdoor spaces. “We wanted to be able to take full advantage of every part of our home, inside and out,” says Diane. “We love how our home flows easily to the pool deck, lower patio and gardens.” Richard Poynter, CEO and owner of Poynter Landscape Architecture and Construction, along with his talented team of landscape architects, including Bob Wilhelm, ASLA, and Ross Richardson, RLA, ASLA, took this very large, open area and fashioned a multi-conversational, dining and lounging environment. “Breaking up the space using different elevations, flooring and color choices was key,” Richard says. Pamela agrees. “Space planning was extremely important when designing this luxury outdoor living area,” she says. “The grounds are large, but Tim and Diane wanted intimate conversation areas for everyday living, as well as accommodations for larger gatherings.” Directly off the kitchen and adjacent to a sparkling blue rectangular swimming pool, large black columns frame a delightful seating area Diane fondly refers to as “Tim’s outdoor office.” Lounge chairs line the far

side of the pool for sunning. Several steps down, a round table is ideal for lunch or a game of cards, while nearby, a dining table beneath an architecturally beautiful pergola awaits larger alfresco meals. A semicircular sofa, with creamy cushions overflowing with a tumble of comfy pillows in rich yet mellow shades of apple green, melon and chocolate, is a welcoming spot to curl up with a good book in front of a roaring fire in the fall. Two rocking chairs nestled in the corner of the deck offer yet another quiet spot to check e-mails or enjoy a glass of wine. And surrounding it all is a lush landscape bursting with a plethora of vibrant flowers, planters abundant with color that house tropical palms, and sun-kissed greenery that adds texture and saturated hues. “Diane likes as much color as possible throughout the year,” explains Richard, “so we balanced the landscape with a low-maintenance selection of perennials, annuals and evergreens that will be rich-looking, whatever the season.” Dotted with contemporary sculpture, including a magnificent fountain and custom water wall, the setting is reminiscent of a coveted getaway. As an encore, Diane explains, “Tim and I love sitting outside in the evening. The tranquility makes it feel like we’re on vacation all year long!” See page 66 for design resources.

A pergola provides a handsome architectural canopy for alfresco dining, while a 12-foot custom river rock granite table is the centerpiece of this large gathering area. Chosen for color, texture and balance, plant materials include Liriope, palms, petunias, coleus, geraniums, pansies (in the fall), sweet potato vine and Vinca minor. Plants are changed seasonally to provide continuous color and interest throughout the year. Opposite: A capacious semicircular sofa begs guests to sit down and stay awhile. Overowing with pillows in rich yet mellow shades of apple green, melon and chocolate brown, this is a wonderful gathering spot for the family.

eanie Hood’s garden – St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles’ Garden of the Year – is truly breathtaking. Around a curve on a narrow, two-lane road in the rolling countryside of Wildwood, you’ll find its astounding beauty. There, the sights overflow with magnificent form: 100 feet of cascading water, tumbling over rocks and boulders, that spills into a mirrorlike pond ablaze with the reflection of the vibrant red, gold, orange and purple flowers that frame a winding stream. A second look reveals two white swans gliding serenely through the pond’s fiery reflections. In whole, the picturesque combination is enchanting. “When I plant something in the garden, I want it to look like I’ve created a painting,” Jeanie says. “If you don’t have a desire to create beauty, you shouldn’t be a gardener.” While most people would know Jeanie as the owner of the popular home furnishings and accessories store Three French Hens, she sees herself in a different light. “When I have mud under my fingernails and on my face, that’s when I’m the happiest. I’m out in the

46

garden at 6 a.m. most days and all day on Sundays and Wednesdays, my days off. I always have trays of plants and pots to plant because when I’m planting, an incredible calmness comes over me. Gardening relaxes me, no matter what I’ve been doing,” Jeanie says. It was Alan Schweiss who first came upon the 6-acre property that the couple now calls home. Familiar with the area from horseback riding through it, he learned that the acreage, which included possibly the only spring fed pond in St. Louis County, was for sale and jumped at the chance to own it.

A garden that would complement the pond and the Country French home they would build at the top of the hill always was a part of the master plan. “The property was solid woods when we bought it,” Jeanie recalls. “We cut down trees and brought in 150 truckloads of dirt just to put in grass. We kept the stone we broke out for the foundation of the house and used it to create the stream and waterfalls. We literally carved the garden from the hillside. As we were building the house, I’d sit and hang my feet out of the French doors, so I could plan the view of the garden.” Jeanie compliments the fine work of Signature Landscapes & Design, Inc., which created the brick garden walkways, waterfall, gazebo, terracing, firepit, and the boulder and stonework in the magnificent outdoor setting. Nine years later, Jeanie’s garden is spread over three of the six acres and is composed of a series of spaces that include a pond-side patio, an outdoor living room with a fireplace, and numerous shady nooks. Jeanie has designated six gardens within the garden. “All the garden areas have names, so I can tell Alan where I’m working,” she says. The most frequent visitors to Jeanie’s garden are granddaughters Rae Marie, 14, and Keegan, 10, and her daughter Deanna. “When the grandkids come over, we hike in the woods, roast hotdogs and make s’mores. Alan and I have one huge party every year, but our home is open constantly to friends who want to bring their children over to

fly fish. We don’t eat out much. We would rather be home and have people over,” notes Jeanie, whose guests each year include inner-city children who have never had an opportunity to go fly fishing. “We want other people to enjoy the garden as much as we do.” It is probably not a coincidence that the colors of the flowers flowing down the hillside and surrounding the pond in Jeanie Hood’s garden are those found in nature’s awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets. Jeanie considers her home and garden to be a bit of heaven. “It was never in my mind that I would have a place like this,” she reflects. “I’ve had a house before, but this is my ‘forever home.’ And this isn’t just my garden. It’s part of my soul. It’s woven into my life, and it provides an incredible satisfaction.” For Jeanie, it’s most certainly heaven on earth. See page 66 for design resources.

Opposite page: An impressive 100-foot waterfall is one of the garden’s most memorable features. Above: The hands-on owners spent time considering soil conditions and built a healthy garden foundation prior to putting anything in the ground. An abundance of annuals – along with perennials, such as ‘Stella de Oro’ daylilies – provide pops of color. The owners created the garden oasis as a gathering space for themselves, their pets, grown children and younger grandchildren. According to Jeanie, even when she’s gazing out of the window, she’s thinking of what she can plant next.

Blooming with Charm ADD STYLE AND COLOR TO YOUR WINDOWSILLS WITH DELIGHTFULLY FRESH FLOWER BOXES BY KATIE UNDERHILL

This window box is brimming with beautiful blooms that thrive in the hot sun of late summer. Sherry Davis, merchandise coordinator of Greenscape Gardens & Gifts, combined purple Scaevola, pink zinnias, yellow marigolds, red pentas, ‘Diamond Frost,’ ‘Black Varnish’ and moss to create an eclectic mix of color and texture in a wrought-iron planter. According to Sherry, designing flower boxes is a creative process. “The possibilities are endless,” she says. Best of all, they transition easily as the seasons change. By planting kale and ornamental mustards, and then adding a bit of fall flavor – such as sticks, twigs, gourds and pumpkins – flower boxes transform into autumn arrangements, perfect for the harvest season, in no time.

S

Lynn Chasteen, exterior plantings designer at Ahner’s Garden & Gifts, suggests bringing indoor plants outside if the window box is located in a shady spot. Shade-loving plants – such as bromeliads, coleus, prayer plant, rabbit’s-foot fern and caladiums, which are used in this arrangement – are beautiful as well as versatile. “I like to incorporate houseplants into arrangements with exterior plants,” she says. In doing so, the window box will last throughout summer and fall, up until the first frost. Once cold weather arrives, transferring the houseplants from the outdoor arrangement into indoor containers allows for year-round enjoyment.

S Window boxes do wonders for a home’s curb appeal, says Alex Peters, store manager of Sherwood’s Forest Nursery & Garden Center, who especially recommends them to urban homeowners living in high-rise developments. Hanging flower boxes from a balcony is a savvy and chic solution for loft and condo dwellers without a garden or yard. To create this stunning summer design, Alex mixed white geraniums, purple salvias, dusty miller, several varieties of ferns, Vinca vine and Hypericum ‘Brigadoon’ in a lovely Victorian wall trough. See page 66 for design resources.

During the warm weather months, water flower boxes up to twice a day – especially those that receive full sun – and apply a liquid fertilizer once every two weeks to keep your greenery looking gorgeous.

SLHL ECO LOGIC

Resourceful Rehabs BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL JACOB

Building a “green” home from scratch is certainly environmentally responsible. But older homes also have inherently green properties, such as thick, solid walls that reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling. And rehabbing an existing home is about as green as it gets. Preservation, after all, is the cornerstone of sustainability. For a green-minded façade, Darrin Crook, general manager of Rhino Shield®, explains that Rhino Shield® Ceramic Coating is a durable, flexible and maintenance-free alternative to exterior paint; is designed to be nontoxic and low-odor; and has a low-E thermal barrier that may reduce energy consumption. The product resists the growth of mold and mildew and is approved for solid waste landfill disposal. Reclaimed hardwood is another wonderful addition to a green home. At the Historic Floor Company in Chesterfield, you will find a number of eco-friendly flooring options, including 5-inch pallet pine, 3.25-inch Old World oak and Rice Mill reclaimed pine, all made from recycled wood. According to Steve Lauer, president of Historic Floor, “Salvaged and reclaimed hardwood flooring is a responsible alternative to buying new. It adds a historical flair to a home and saves wood that would otherwise be discarded as trash.” Existing wood floors that need some TLC can find it at Mr. Sandless®, the largest floor refinishers in North America. Their finishes have low VOCs and contain no toxic, caustic or banned chemicals. According to Daniel Praz, CEO, founder and creator of Mr. Sandless®, “green” simply means “safe.” “When I developed the system, I only wanted to use safe materials – for my own health and the health and safety of my clients,” says Daniel.

“The greenest 56

A charming century home in the heart of Webster Groves was lovingly restored and updated with modern materials by Robben Contracting, Inc., while preserving the integrity of its original late 19th-century style.

But if you’re looking to make an old home go eco-forward, don’t just stop with the basics. Todd and Jenny Rausch, owners of Karr-Bick Kitchen + Bath, were devoted to preserving the past when renovating their cottage getaway home. They feel that old materials are often more intricate and unique than new items and give a space added character. The salvaged stone steps leading up to the door of their enclosed front porch were a find from the Century Used Brick Company in St. Louis. A local shop full of antique, architectural eye candy is Fellenz Antiques on Euclid. Those interested in reusing and recycling are certain to find just what they are looking for in this warehouse of everything old. Whether you’re on the hunt for an interesting mantel for your fireplace or a special door that speaks to its history, you’re bound to find just the right piece. Another amazing resource for forgotten treasures and timeworn objects of beauty is Euro Trash. Based in Jacksonville, Illinois, this 50,000-square-foot warehouse is filled with fabulous finds imported from Belgium, Holland and France. Euro Trash embodies what is known to be a thrown-away elegance. ReStore Habitat for Humanity also offers building materials at substantial savings and serves as an outlet for many reusable items. Helping uncover the gem beneath the dust is truly rewarding. And with the vast number of resources and recycled materials available, you can make your renovation the brightest shade of green ever! A multi-functional, decorative acoustic panel hides, yet provides easy access to, the surround sound system equipment.

Described as ‘intuitive” by the owner, the integrated media system is easily managed by the universal remote.

A state-of-the-art electronics system and a 115-inch layered acrylic front projection screen are highlights in the theater room.

Movie-ing Along A THEATER ROOM TAKES CENTER STAGE IN A CHESTERFIELD RESIDENCE BY VICKI PICKLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL JACOB

CHALLENGE: To transform an 18-year-old “big-screen TV family room” into a technologically advanced, designated theater room. SOLUTION: Working with consultant Phil McHenry and project manager Eric Stevens of The Screening Room, a Chesterfield family realized their dream of a customized theater room that would thoroughly meet their home entertainment needs. The tech-savvy crew implemented a creative, strategic design plan that considered all aspects of the owners’ wishes, as well as the home’s lower-level setting. Behind the theater room in an unfinished space, a high-definition theater projector was placed 15 feet behind the wall separating the two spaces, along with light cones and other technological components. The setup provides easy accessibility to all equipment, and the rear projector eliminates shadows that would have been unavoidable with the 8-foot

before ceiling. In the theater room, speakers are built-in behind decorative acoustic panels that provide sound absorption. One of the multifunctional panels cleverly hides surround sound equipment and extra shelves for out-of-sight storage. Two rows of theater seating with automatic, reclining leather seats offer function and luxury. Precision space planning allows for ample room to enjoy the Nintendo® Wii gaming system, and “playing tennis” in the space is a breeze. Movie time is always special with a state-of-the-art electronics system and a 115-inch front projection screen, where films come to life with the click of a button, using a universal remote control for all the equipment and the lighting. “The project exceeded our expectations and was an enjoyable, easy process. We’re looking forward to watching the Cardinals in the World Series together and Disney® movies with our granddaughter,” says the homeowner. See page 66 for design resources.

A TOWERING TURRET RECALLS THE ROMANCE OF A MEDIEVAL CASTLE EDITED BY JUDY UELK PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE MARXER

The many windows

on the curved walls.

Quietly nestled in the picturesque countryside of St. Albans rests a custom home inspired by the legend and romance of medieval European castles. With four massive turrets piercing the sky, creating a sense of power and fortification, this one-of-akind residence, designed by Rich Just of R.L. Just Architect, P.C., is fit for a king. “Our client was very motivated in his desire to create an extraordinary residence that mimicked the distinctive architectural style of the Middle Ages,” says Rich. Originally serving as a castle’s powerful defense mechanisms, turrets today serve a more decorative purpose. This particular turret houses a stunning shower in the home’s luxurious master bath. Water spills into the shower from a custom-designed stone waterfall and is complemented by a rain showerhead. The many windows allow light to penetrate the large volume of space, casting a play of shadows on the curved walls. From the full height stone wall to the intricate detailing of the corniced brickwork, the details of this project are what truly contribute to its success. Small, arched windows step up around the outside of the tower, replicating the vertical slits used in medieval times, which allowed archers to fend off attackers. The tower is capped with a steeply sloped roof and architectural shingles, and a slight curve starting at the fascia board adds yet another dimension to the detail of this truly unique, unequivocally beautiful and ageless design. See page 66 for design resources.

A Florida couple moves inland to the Midwest Coast, where they still enjoy the water, whether they’re in or out of it.

R

andy and Pat Morris’ Lake of the Ozarks home in the private Cedar Crest community doesn’t resemble the log cabin-style abode they originally set out to find for a second home.

In 2005, while visiting family at the Lake to escape a hurricane heading for their

full-time Naples, Fla., residence, the couple thought they would look to see what was available. Quickly discovering a lack of area homes that fit their rustic vision, they broadened their horizons. Ironically, their decision to buy the home they ultimately chose was made at first sight — but not because of the house itself. “When we walked in and saw the view, we were sold,” Pat says. One step through the front door of the five-suite home and the view takes over. A wide expanse of windows beneath 13-foot ceilings opens to an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Lake of the Ozarks’ main channel. “We saw just a handful of homes, but after this, we didn’t look anywhere else,” Randy adds. Prater-Backsen Construction built the 6,800-square-foot home in 2000. The couple credits Lynn Farrell of Farrell Real Estate for zeroing in on what they desired after they moved away from the woodsy cabin idea.

Three months out of the year, the Morrises return to the Lake to enjoy their bluff-top setting, the incredible view of the water (and unbelievable sunsets) and the atmosphere the area offers. Real estate developers and homebuilders by occupation, the couple says their Lake home differs in style from their Florida home. Randy appreciates the concrete tile roof and stone facade on their lake home, as well as the marble and cherry hardwood flooring and custom-built maple cabinetry throughout. Marble tile on the main level delineates an unencumbered foyer that opens into the great room and also gives access, respectively, to the formal dining room on one side and

Throughout the main level, calm colors create a soothing atmosphere.

Sculptures and paintings found throughout the home reflect Pat’s interest and skill as an artist. On the wall overlooking the dining room table, a large abstract painting by Denver artist Bob Maes, discovered by the Morrises at Columbia, Mo.’s Perlow-Stevens Gallery, stands out with brown tones and an understated grouping of geometric shapes. The painting gives off a mix of modern, minimalist and natural vibes — characteristic of Pat’s interior design seen throughout the home. Casual elegance is the theme in the great room, where Pat’s love of the classic Ralph Lauren look and simple, clean lines create a comfortable yet stylish ambience. An oversized sideboard anchors the room with an inviting sitting area arranged around the fireplace. Pat says the lower level is “like another house downstairs.” A wet bar, billiards table, pub-style game table and comfortable sitting area punctuate the more casual family atmosphere. The main guest suite on the lower level offers easy access to the swimming pool and deck. Pat and Randy have claimed two of the lower suites for their hobbies — a music studio for the ex-rock-’n-roll drummer and guitarist and an art studio for Pat. The couple also enjoys golfing and dining out. But the natural beauty, wildlife (they regularly see turkey in the driveway or even deer nibbling Pat’s flowers), the season-changing landscape and the friendly people are the true draws to the area for them. “It’s a little like going back in time. There are more family values here,” Randy says. “The Lake of the Ozarks can’t be beat. It’s the very best value for what you get.”

outdoor trends

“Homeowners want to capture the entire view of the Lake from their property,” Beckum says. “They want to take advantage of all the seasons, so we include outdoor fireplaces, heated pools and amenities that invite outdoor activity.” Beckum says it’s not uncommon to build a home with three-season porches and decks across the back expanse of a home to capitalize on a property’s vegetation, landscape, terrain and water views. The veteran builder predicts that future homes will be smaller and more efficient, with an emphasis on outdoor living spaces. “People will always use this area as a retreat or even a year-round residence,” Beckum explains. “But it will be even more about using the outdoor portion of a property to its fullest.” Dick and Lori Davis of Fulton, Mo., purchased a Beckum-built home two years ago. “Outdoor sound systems are very popular,” he notes. “Rocks and other natural materials are used to incorporate speakers and other electronics into the setting.” Ambient lighting that creates atmosphere and 24-hour use of outdoor spaces is also popular with homeowners. “Lighting has become an art,” Halbedel adds. “It’s dramatic indirect lighting that, again, blends into the landscape so it’s not intrusive.” Halbedel says high-end artificial plants are being used to decorate outdoor living spaces more frequently because of the deer population that likes to consume natural vegetation. And like Beckum, Halbedel says that many homeowners want to accentuate the views they have of the Lake, rather than actually access the water. The trend toward accommodating a priority of all-weathering gathering spots that include relaxing, cooking, entertaining and communing ensures that high-functioning outdoor spaces at the Lake will continue to live as
