Design for a Lifetime Architecture plays a critical role in meeting the needs of a space’s inhabitants in the present and in the future. See it exemplified in the carefully planned “forever home” of Natalie Taylor. Also, learn how certain “easy-living” elements included in any floor plan can help homeowners stay in their homes indefinitely, no matter their age or ability.

“Dave and I went through the whole house and designed everything, including the baseboards and the molding,” Taylor recalls. “I needed an oversized bureau in one of the bathrooms, and I wanted it to have a slight Asian flair, and Dave built it. He really is amazing.” The living room fireplace was ordered in China then shipped here and assembled. The adjoining family room has a fireplace as well but with a completely different look. Taylor designed it herself with a patina bronze that creates a warm, inviting mood. Most of the light fixtures — some wood, some metal — were custom-made by Fine Art Lamps, including a colorfully beaded hanging lamp that caused Taylor to say ‘wow’ when she spotted it.

The juxtaposition of old and new is apparent from first glance in the lobby: Polished brass, terrazzo floors and painstakingly restored Egyptianmotif detailed ceilings coexist nicely with key-card controlled access glass security doors with minimalist polished nickel handles. Developer Rick Powell used taxincrement financing for remediation and demolition of the building, and worked with Gastinger Walker Harden Architects to renovate the building shell and finish out the office space occupying the first three floors. All new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were installed. El Dorado Inc. designed the residential spaces. “This was an opportunity for us to use state-of-the-art technology,” says principal Josh Shelton. “Rick’s input from the beginning set the bar high for the downtown market. This level of commitment to quality is ambitious, especially in speculative homes.” Powell also enlisted an acoustical engineer to ensure the 28 condos were built with the latest advances to minimize sound transference. “There is an intricate system behind the walls,” Shelton explains. “Ceilings are insulated and part of a suspended system that isolates it from the concrete structure. Floating floors are laid over continuous acoustic matting. Walls contain four layers of sheetrock, insulation, sound caulk and a resilient channel. Pieces fit together so metal is not pierced, thus creating an opening for sound to travel through.” Each of the residences “creates a sensory experience,” according to Shelton. With 9foot 8-inch ceiling heights and expansive walls of windows, the units live large. here are no apologies when Buddha, bounding and panting, greets visitors

at his door. Rick and Rena Shanks’ Wheaten terrier exhibits the same

personality as the family home — exuberant.

“When I first saw this house, I drove by at least four times thinking this is a great

location, it’s a ranch and I love it,” says Rena, anchoring the dog before he pounces. Getting Rick to agree wasn’t all that difficult. “He mulled things over and said the linoleum in the kitchen would have to go,” she recalls. That was 17 years ago. “Actually, the house was in pretty good shape when we bought it. We haven’t changed much structurally except for a major kitchen remodel (finally, after all these years) and master bathroom,” Rena acknowledges. 66 • KCHANDG.COM

From the curb, the house doesn’t look all that unusual compared to others in the neighborhood. Setting it apart, however, is the kaleidoscope of color sweeping over walls, ceilings and furnishings. It’s a riot of color that’s impossible not to notice: a milk chocolate-colored master bedroom, two half-baths, one sea-green and the other lavender, and a tart, berry-colored office. “I grew up in California. My mother, who was my inspiration, instilled a love of bright, beautiful color, along with a good sense to fill a house with lots of visual interest,” Rena says. That unabashed use of color blooms immediately once inside the foyer. Maybe it’s the mellow-gold wall color that sets up a cheerful welcome or maybe it’s the artistic, metal table. “If I see something I like, I research it and, if I can’t find it, I’ll have it made, which is exactly what I did with this table.” Purposefully diverting your attention is the living room, awash in sunlight and vibrant teal. All the furnishings here hold their own, particularly the two flea market chairs that Rena paid $25 apiece for. Slip-covered in vivid pink Dupioni silk, they scarcely temper the palette. They simply heighten the appeal much like the fanciful, gold-legged table, antiques and ceiling glazed with a metallic silver and teal paint. All together, this room delivers plenty of punch. The dining room, just beyond, is equally eye-catching. A dashing, pink-glazed coral drenches the walls accented by a shimmery gold ceiling. The colors radiate so stunningly that they steal the show. A wooden table for eight (with the original chairs Rick brought into the marriage), a pastel batik picture and a unique iron buffet Rena purchased at Christopher Filley Antiques are subtle understudies that balance out the dramatic space. “There are a lot of doors in this house,” Rena muses, addressing one in particular separating the kitchen from the dining room. “My partner, Pat Wright, and I (the two own Greathouse LLC, an interior design company) found this amazing glass embedded with cherry blossoms. We cut out the inside of the pocket door, filling it with this material called Livinglass. It’s like artwork; I consider it a focal point.” They didn’t stop at the door. Realizing the kitchen was going to need a major overhaul, Rena decided it was high time to renovate. First they gutted the entire space. Utilizing the original metal cabinets, Rena and Pat had them painted Navajo White then detailed them with new wood and metal handles. “We added Zodiaq countertops in chocolate brown then raised and recessed the ceiling 20 inches,” Rena adds. They topped the functional island with a sleeve of creamcolored travertine and highlighted the custom-made wood cabinet below with antique ceiling medallions from Black Bamboo. “I would have kept the original white Belgian glass tiles for the walls, but they’re too difficult to work with so I opted for wheat-colored travertine tile instead.” 68 • KCHANDG.COM

Rena accented the kitchen with a watercolor by Peregrine Honig, colored glass, ceramic bibelots and “my other indulgence, a crystal chandelier,” she says. Livinglass reappears fronting a cabinet above the kitchen built-ins and a 7-foot slice hanging at the back of the kitchen. Rena admits, “I love this material so much, I wanted to be able to see it from many angles.” Adjacent to the kitchen, clutches of artful collections decorate the spacious family room filled with overstuffed, subtly printed furnishings. Rena’s quirky knack of visual appeal surfaces constantly. Thus, the eye bounces from mosaic hearts to

Beveled mirrors. Mercury glass. Burlap paired with silk. The shine of metal and glass mixed with the texture of reclaimed wood and natural fabrics appeared throughout the recent Las Vegas Market. Most showrooms ditched the formality that had filled their spaces for years, instead settling en masse into looks that are casually elegant. Brenda Freebern, owner of Picture Perfect Interiors in Olathe, attended the February event and reported back to us what she saw as overall trends for 2010. This particular market, the first of the year, was an important indicator of what will be appearing in retail shops this spring and summer. “The showrooms were getting back to their roots __ almost everything was very traditional,” Freebern notes, “and the accessories were more refined than in the past.” Freebern says the new look reflects an attitude shift. When the economy was flying high, people would buy accessories and keep them for three to five years, while the previous norm was to hold them seven to 10 years. Now there’s a return to buying for quality rather than to fill space. “People want to keep things for a long time. They’d rather wait and buy the exact piece they want,” she explains. Finding gorgeous things shouldn’t be that difficult, however, with the new introductions. “Beveled mirrors were an important part of displays __ they were everywhere!” Freebern exclaims. “You can use them as a tray on a table or hang a group of six or eight all together for a big impact.” Shiny finishes caught her eye on many accessories. “There was a lot of silver and gold mixed together, and almost all the collections had antique brass,” she adds. The shimmer and shine was often toned down by neutral and natural backgrounds. The busiest showrooms paired glam with nature. Curly willow and shells filled

vases and bowls. Raw linen tablecloths and frayed burlap runners demurely let the accessories steal the show. “Everything was very neutral and noncolor or there were big pops of color, especially turquoise and orange,” Freebern notes.

Freebern is taking a cue from the new color trend and is repainting a fauxed wall in the shop a gorgeous green. “It’s time to freshen things up,” she says. Her customers come in for the same reason, looking for ideas to refresh a mantle display or throw a new chair or table into the mix, somehow intuiting when new items arrive at the store. With a shipment of accessories just in from the Las Vegas Market, Brenda says you have to act fast. “When you come into the shop and see something you love, you have to buy it then because it’s often not there the next time,” she says. “We don’t want anyone to miss out.” Read an exclusive recap of Freebern’s chance meeting and impromptu interview with Kathy Ireland at kchandg.com MAY/JUNE 2010 • 73

If you’re buying on your own, it’s your responsibility to investigate and determine what will last and what has poor workmanship that might make it literally fall apart at the seams. Working with a professional who knows more than you do about the subject will help you select furniture that will have a long life span. “Not only should a designer or salesperson answer your questions about furniture’s construction, they should listen to your needs and guide you to a price point comfortable for your budget,” says Patrick Madden of MaddenMcFarland Interiors. He also adds that you should be open to spending more to buy an item you’ll use often, noting that people don’t bat an eye when plunking down money for an HDTV. “But when buying a sofa that will not only anchor a room but serve as daily seating for family and guests, they

more,” he says. “Big-box retailers and the Internet have made mass-produced goods more accessible to shoppers, including the quality.” Ultimately, he explains, you should get tired of a piece of furniture because its style or color is outdated or it doesn’t fit into the floor plan of a new residence — whether it’s a bed, sofa, chair, coffee table or dining room set — before it’s worn out. In a dollar-stretching economy, Madden encourages you to look at the big picture when selecting furniture. “Just because something is less expensive doesn’t mean

Here’s what to look for: Frame __ “Kiln-dried is desirable, which means the wood’s moisture content is gone, and the frame is solid and won’t warp or distort,” Myers says. “Sustainable forest woods such as maple and alder are good choices.” Spring __ Eight-way hand-tied springs are best, and pieces incorporating them fetch top dollar. Cushions __ Look for quality fill, such as high-density Dacron, that will hold its shape for years. Feather and down cushions give unquestionable luxurious softness but make sure they’re ticked. And if you can’t afford to go all out at once, Davis says designers have always promoted the idea of mixing new with the old when it comes to decor. “A room is much more interesting when it has a mix of periods, including furniture, art and accessories,” she says. “Investing in furniture that becomes an heirloom is not only good for the environment, it’s very stylish.”

available in all price points and many styles. Dan Troxel, owner of Lights & Design By Dan, designs and manufactures his own. “It’s a multifaceted fixture that can be utilized in a variety of applications,” he says. His fixtures also come with colored-lens capability.

Safe and secure To expose the sides and back of a home at night, add floodlights and/or motion sensors, which detect movement and beam down a bright spotlight, deterring potential burglars. Add an alarm to a motion sensor to guarantee ultimate security. Take it one step further and place lights in tree canopies to give your property additional protection. Eliminate safety hazards for friends and family with a well-lit driveway and pathway to the main entrance, which should be lit enough to identify and welcome them. Also illuminate steps, hand rails, pools and decks to help them avoid potential accidents.

Entertaining — it’s electric! You’ll need general lighting, such as ceiling fixtures, lamps and chandeliers, for cooking and entertaining, and concealed low-voltage ambient lights to create a romantic atmosphere for two. For the best of both worlds, install dimmer switches to change the mood when you please. To use the pool after hours, Banks Blue Valley Pool & Spa recommends perimeter lighting around bodies of water to warn of the water’s edge. Use lighting that’s flush to the ground (eliminating a trip hazard) and that outlines the perimeter as a safety precaution. (Banks Blue Valley uses a durable, plastic light-transmitting medium called Lexan.) Fiber-optic lights, either inside the pool or around the perimeter, add a colorful detail, whether they illuminate one color or rotate through the color wheel. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE 88 • KCHANDG.COM

Underwater lighting for pools, ponds and spas, and backlighting for fountains and waterfalls highlight each interesting feature for brilliance and safety.

Add some pizzazz For a little more ‘oomph,’ sync lighting with music or check into advanced colorchanging lighting techniques like laminar fountains, dry-mounted lights that shoot light beams (in any color you want) from one spot to another — if a yellow and red light beam land in the same spot in the water, it turns green, just like when mixing paint colors. Or install Fiberstars’ lighted star floor kits (like the ceiling in a planetarium) at the bottom of your pool. This company also manufactures dazzling LED underwater light systems as does Nexxus Lighting, like with its LED Light Drivers that uplight waterfalls, bubblers and more. Get creative and change up the color palette or synchronize water and multiple-light installations to really impress guests. All of this is available with the touch of an on/off button or automatically set a timer to do it for you. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives’ Lighting Control Automation (LCA) technology incorporates a smart timer that’s set to turn on/off any and all lighting at a specific time, controlling indoor AND outdoor lighting simultaneously. Setting a specific time for both also creates a sense of safety and security when away from home. They even provide free evening demonstrations before you purchase a package. With all that’s available in outdoor lighting, you should have no problem finding the right mix for your landscape and ways to experience it like never before.

Coming Uncorked Summer is the time to relieve the pressure of a long day with a bottle of vino, some good eats and a showroom full of close friends. We had all three with our second Cooking School and have become particularly close with Off the Vine, who supplies the wine and writes our bimonthly column. This issue: what to pair with grilled foods.

It can go with anything from grilled fish to a juicy burger in a single sip, and pinor noir is a perfect match with salmon, chicken, pork chops and shrimp.

Grill-Friendly Whites Chardonnay — This white wine matches well with grilled fish and any creamy or buttery dish, like chicken with a cream sauce or grilled corn on the cob. Riesling — Riesling is the perfect varietal for grilled brats, shrimp, barbecue chicken and a variety of grilled veggies. Sauvignon Blanc — Salads pair well with sauvignon blanc, but keep in mind that many meats are grilled with Italian dressing marinades. Because this varietal has herbaceous qualities, it will match well with grilled peppers, veggies in fresh herbs, and grilled fish with lemon. South African sauvignon blancs have bell pepper tones and are fantastic with grilled chicken fajitas. Gewürztraminer — Because this wine has a slight pepper or spice along with some sweetness, it offers a balance to spicy dishes with its slight to moderately sweet character. Blackened Mahi Mahi has that same character and would be a perfect match, as would chicken with mango salsa. Rosé — This is the wine to go with on a hot day when you want something light and refreshing. You can find some nice dry

style rosés that are not sweet. Other go-to wines for hot weather are Spanish verdejo and Argentinean torrontés.

Temperature Tips Hot weather tip: Cool your wines down a bit — even the red wines — to compensate for the warmer weather. Hot wine is never fun to drink. Cool drink tip: Take your patio party up a notch with a fun wine-related drink like a “winearita.” Mix wine and ice in a blender to create this tasty wine slushy. Don’t forget to provide each guest with a “woozie.” (Wine needs to stay cold with coozies, too!) These come in many colors, so everyone can find their glass.

Recommendations Clos Otto Boxhead White, Australia, is a fruity yet crisp and dry white blend of chardonnay, semillon and sauvignon blanc that will complement the richness of potato salads and buttered corn on the cob. It is also light enough to pair with summer

wine from Lake County, but it is not blended from several lots like most California sauvignon blanc. It has great citrus and pineapple aromas with rich, complex grapefruit and fig flavors. Pair it with grilled shrimp or creamy chilled pasta. Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina, is a medium-body red that has a bouquet of spice and cedar. Black cherry flavors and some spice step up any burger experience. Gain Bay Cabernet Family, Napa Valley, Calif., is a blend of cabernet, cab Franc and petit verdot. It is a gorgeous red with deep fruit and spice, cherry aromas and an earthy backbone. The complexity of this wine makes it diverse and matches well with almost any grilled meat.

SPEED? Whether your preferred water sport gets your motor running — or sailing — you can find it at the Lake of the Ozarks this season.

SETTING SAIL “Power boats are fun — everybody likes to go fast,” says Greg Minor, general manager of Ozark Yacht Club (OYC). “But sailing is something different to do. It’s very peaceful with no engines running and it’s a little more challenging to let the wind move you around the lake.” PHOTO COURTESY OF THE LAKE OF THE OZARKS CVB

OYC is a full-service marina, traditional yacht club and home to the Ozark Sailing Club, supporting local sailing enthusiasts and offering a social atmosphere for boaters. With around 50 current members, Minor (who is also the club’s secretary) says that the Ozark Sailing Club’s membership is growing but that sailing at the Lake is not a new trend. “It’s a trend that is revamping,” Minor explains. “Years and years ago, there was a tremendous amount of sailboats at the Lake. We’re trying to bring that back.” “We see power boats shut down and watch us sail,” Minor says. “Everybody, at one point or another, has said ‘I’d like to sail.’”

Camdenton is located at the crossroads of Hwy 5 and Hwy 54. In this area, you’ll find myriad options when it comes to homes. Within the city limits, everything from old turn-of-the-century homes to new development is available. Skirting the city limits are gated golf communities such as Old Kinderhook with custom homes, waterfront

townhomes;

waterfront condominium communities like Point Royale, featuring two- and threebedroom condos starting in the $130,000s; and the new-home development Mission Bay, with everything from custom homes to townhomes from the high $300,000s and up, complete with community dock and clubhouse. Camdenton is one of the oldest communities in the Lake area, with a lot of history pre-dating the building of Bagnell Dam. While visiting the west side of the Lake, take in a few antique stores, tour Bridal Cave and hike in the state park to the HaHa Tonka ruins.

Osage Beach is commonly considered the shopping hub of the Lake area, with the outlet mall boasting its 110 shops and various big-box stores scattered along the highway. Boating, fishing, golfing, dining and nightlife are also available in this centrally located city on Lake of the Ozarks. As the highway project moves forward, the lay of the land seems to be in constant flux, as are the opportunities for homebuyers. Like other areas of the Lake, there are condominiums, townhomes and singlefamily homes in a wide range of prices. As the new highway makes areas more accessible, new home communities will be developed. Harbor Heights Estates is one such community currently in development, offering affordable three-bedroom homes in a planned community.

Another private development is Timberlake Village, offering home sites and condominiums in a wooded area with quiet waterfront starting in the low $200,000s.
