We l c o m e

Home for the Holidays EVERYONE SEEMS TO have a holiday they like to host; for me, Thanksgiving was that holiday. When we lived in Kansas City, extended family would converge from around the country and I would serve up the one dinner I can cook really well. But now that house has been sold (which, don’t get me wrong, is excellent news) and I live in an apartment that is comfortable and fun, but not exactly conducive to hosting a large family gathering. So this year, I will let someone else be the host. And that’s okay. Because although I no longer have a big family house, I am, in fact, home. For the first time in many years, my family lives in the same city. And that’s what I call home—even if my beautiful dining room table is in storage. As the holiday season approaches, our plans tend to turn toward gathering in our homes. I always hear about how carpet, bedding and furniture sales peak at this time of year, a sign that we’re readying our nests for out-of-town visitors. We focus on setting a lovely table and preparing memorable meals for happy guests. With this, our entertaining issue, we hope to inspire you to plan a gathering for family and friends. With tips from Anne Gee, who designed a beautiful tablescape for the annual L’Esprit de Noel home tour (page 31) and advice on serving wine from Master Sommelier Doug Krenik (page 104), we want to help you get everything ready so you can slow down and enjoy the company of the people around you. Of course, it’s prime gift-giving season, too, and I hope you enjoy our annual gift guide (page 17), in which our staff—and a few friends you may know—share the gifts they’d like to give and receive this year, many of them made right here in Colorado. Once the rush is over and I start the hunt for my new home, a top requirement will be a dining room large enough to fit my table. And as soon as I find it, Thanksgiving will be returned to its rightful place. Wishing you a memorable holiday season,

SNOW FROM DECEMBER 20-31, holiday soul invades Aspen for 12 days of feel-good festivities: ice skating, caroling, special screenings and performances at the town’s best venues—and, of course, appearances from the man in red. OF THE 60 MILLION-PLUS visitors who came to the U.S. last year to ski, one in five visited a Colorado resort. To keep those numbers strong, Colorado Ski Country USA resorts have devoted more than $50 million to new projects for the 2011/-12 season: new lifts at Buttermilk and Copper, terrain park improvements at SolVista and Winter Park, and (perhaps most importantly) a new onmountain restaurant in Aspen and après-ski hotspot in Steamboat. coloradoski.com

ALEXANDRA WALKER CLARK’S NEW BOOK, Colorado’s Historic Hotels, is part coffee-table companion, part goto guide for your upcoming holiday stay. Full of intriguing stories about the state’s grand hotels as well as those lesser-known gems, the book sheds light on why some flourished while others fizzled. CHIC, SEXY AND OH-SO COOL, bar carts are making a comeback, reinvented by big-name lines such as Hickory Chair and Baker. The Red and the Bold BY MARY BARTHELME ABEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIMBERLY GAVIN

WHERE IT BEGAN When the current owners took a look at this vacation home in Beaver Creek’s Arrowhead resort community, it was covered from floor to ceiling in perfect 1980s style. “It was all dusty rose, with lots of matching fabric and drapery,” says interior designer Melissa Greenauer of Vail-based Greenauer Design Group, whose mission was to freshen up and bring balance to the expansive space and wash it in a lively color palette.

PERFECT TOUCHES Fortunately for the interior designer, she had the homeowners’ enthusiastic permission to “go big on color. They wanted the ‘wow’ factor.” For this dining room, which is just one part of the overall remodel, Greenauer chose a “cherry red that verges on orange” for the carpet, head chairs and drapery. “The space has good light, so it could handle the color and big, bold patterns.” She also opted for large pieces, including the two conversation-starting chandeliers by Shine Home.

STYLE TIPS In order to go big on style (and fill the large space) but stay within budget, Greenauer splurged on some pieces–in this case not one, but two show-stopping chandeliers and stylish, oversized head chairs–while saving on other pieces, such as the large but understated table. The long, layered draperies also add to the grandeur. To ground the vibrant red, she wove in hits of black in the fabric, chandeliers and fun, zebra-print door. Nailhead accents connect pieces throughout the space.

Set Your Table with Surprises How do you create a holiday tablescape that’s cheery, but not cliché? Festive, but not so...red and green? Boutique owner Anne Gee has a few inspired ideas

Lay a good foundation Here, an antique German grain sack from the 1800s—de-seamed and laid flat—provides tactile and visual interest. “Don’t be afraid to use things you wouldn’t normally see on a tabletop,” Gee says. Case in point: old reference books become placemats.

BY CAROLINE EBERLY

PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

DON RILEY

“JOYFUL AND HAPPY, UNUSUAL AND UNEXPECTED.” So describes the festive tablescape Anne Gee designed for a father and his daughters in their Cherry Creek home, featured in the L’Esprit de Noel Home Tour. The co-owner of Patina Antiques & Home in Greenwood Village called in some creative help—her business partners Joy Phelps and Debra Platt, along with floral designer Becka MacPherson of The Plum Gallery—and together, they combined vintage artifacts with contemporary elements, rustic touches with shimmery fixings, neutral tones with pops of metallic. The result: a beautiful, sparkling spread that’s sure to inspire much dinnertime conversation.

Bring in the natural beauty Gee crafted a pinecone topiary wrapped in birch bark to add some natural texture, a sure design move in Colorado. The natural materials also tie in with the indoor surroundings—the earthy colors of the existing décor and a neighboring garden room.

Serve with all-white separates “We tried to put antique and contemporary pieces together to get a fresh mix,” Gee says. A medley of white antique plates—utilitarian ironstone with pretty patterned dishes—is set alongside antique French silverware and contemporary stemware from Pottery Barn. A starfish alludes to the season without being so literal. COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

Forget red and green. “There are so many new color schemes you can use,” Gee says. She suggests magenta and robin’segg blue with worn silver ornaments. Or, forget bold hues altogether and opt for neutrals with hits of glimmer and sparkle, much like this spread. Reinvent the table runner. Gee suggests getting creative with materials to create your foundational layer. Consider a piece of embroidery that your grandmother made, black-and-white photos from holidays past, an antique German grain sack like the one used here—just look for “something that calls to you.”

Don’t buy new baubles. Use old items to create a new holiday look: here, Gee reincarnates vintage gloves and books, even an old dress form that’s covered in lace and topped with a festive necklace. “We wanted ‘her’ to pose as the French maid to add a bit of whimsy,” Gee says. Be adventurous with ornaments. String them from the chandelier, arrange them in a bowl—anything to give this holiday mainstay a year off from the tree.

{

Layer, mix, repeat. “Mix textures, finishes, straight lines, curvy lines,” Gee says. “Mix the heights [of items], and don’t have everything stand along a straight line.” Incorporating lots of interesting items brings a design to life. Consider the room next door. “It’s important to work with the rooms that lead off the dining room so it all flows and doesn’t clash with your design,” Gee says.

Let opposites attract Unlikely pairings of items—fancy with plain, old with new, delicate with sturdy—create an element of surprise. Light-as-air mercury glass candle holders and a curvy compote dish mingle with a heavy-duty industrial stand from the 1940s and a rustic antique toast server. Pieces of ironware—utilitarian pottery from the 1800s that’s now highly prized—pair with platinum-edged plates and shimmery ornaments (which Gee hand-carried back from Amsterdam).

Our goal is to inspire a new art of living through the promotion of health, relaxation and design. Come see why we are recognized as an industry leader and experience our earned reputation for quality, style and luxury. Your home is your haven, be inspired.

Add touches of whimsy An antique player piano music roll doubles as a runner for the sideboard, and an old elementary-school flash card calls out “sing.” Gee chose these elements “just to be joyful,” she says. “Happiness means music.”

Finish the look with greens The Plum Gallery arranged simple greens with frosted pine cones—and a bit of sparkle—for a finishing touch that is festive, but not fussy. The earthy hues complement, rather than distract from, the design’s low-key palette.

Christmas BY SALLY STICH PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

EMILY MINTON REDFIELD

An elegant arrangement of long-collected and cherished decorations dresses this Englewood home in its holiday best CYNICS WHO THINK THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS evaporates after childhood should spend a little time with Maureen Regan Cannon. One look at her beautifully decorated home is proof positive that the wonder of the holiday season is as strong as ever. Raised in Kansas by parents who made Christmas a glittery, storybook holiday, Cannon has carried on the tradition, and anyone who drives by her house—or gets invited in—is transported to the land of nutcrackers and sugar plum fairies. “Maureen’s goal is to create a wonderful environment for her family,” says Becka MacPherson of Denver’s The Plum Gallery, a boutique filled with home accessories, art and flowers. MacPherson worked with Cannon to create the home’s spectacular holiday transformation. “Maureen has exquisite taste, so creating a Christmas wonderland in her house is always a joy.”

Deck the Halls

The foyer (right) invites guests into the holiday wonderland with soothing earth tones, baronial chairs, and a glamorous chandelier from Black Tulip Antiques. The lushly adorned greenery has been part of Cannon’s holiday decorations for years. “The greenery is filled with ribbons, leaves and ornaments,” floral designer Becka MacPherson says. “Maureen wants people to smile and feel festive in her home.”

A Light Touch

The tree has champagne tinsel and is covered with Maureen’s ornaments—glass balls studded with rhinestones, gold and crystals. —floral designer Becka MacPherson

42

Beyond a classic seasonal vignette on the fireplace mantle and a simple tabletop tree, the serene and sophisticated Asian-inspired living room (above) is noticeably void of holiday decor. “It’s already so beautiful,” MacPherson says of the space, “that any further adornment would just detract from it.”

Simple Santas

From her collection of stuffed Santas, Cannon chose only white figurines for the side table (left), a monochromatic counterpoint to the colorful tree on the other side of the room.

Casual Corner

The tabletop tree (opposite) was MacPherson’s addition, a perfect solution for this dark corner. “It has champagne tinsel and is covered with Maureen’s ornaments by Katherine’s Collection—glass balls studded with rhinestones, gold and crystals.”

Center Stage

The twelve-foot-high tree (above) took MacPherson eight hours to decorate. “Maureen loves every square inch of the tree covered, and she has a large collection of ornaments,” the designer says, “so the tree is draped with feather-covered ornaments, silk flowers, color-coordinated ornaments, gold icicle drops, even letters in gold tin for the family’s initials.” MacPherson’s contribution? The beautiful ribbons woven throughout.

Detail-Oriented

A visual feast, every tree branch ( far left) offers surprises, from leaves sprayed gold, glittered fruit and glass-and-gold snowflakes, to olivegreen glass balls and gold organza poinsettias.

Pretty and Personal

For the past 15 years, Cannon has collected snow globes during her travels, which pair with old-fashioned needlepoint pillows to create a charming vignette (left). 44

Country Kitchen

The holiday décor in Cannon’s kitchen is fairly restrained compared to other rooms, but it still has a festive feel thanks to an unexpected bow of greens over the range hood and a piece of folk art purchased at a Christmas store in Vail. The cow—which doubles as a blackboard—stays up year round to remind Cannon of her Kansas roots.

Fresh oranges are such a traditional holiday fruit, so we combined them with leaves and greenery, and tucked them into the owner’s silver urns and mint julep glasses. —floral designer Becka MacPherson

Fine Dining

In the traditional dining room (opposite), MacPherson’s goal was to create a focal point using Cannon’s favorite color, orange. “Fresh oranges are such a traditional holiday fruit,” says the designer, “so we studded them with whole cloves, combined them with leaves and greenery, and tucked them into the owner’s silver urns and mint julep glasses.” Add to that a smattering of gold bottlebrush trees and you have sheer opulence.

Fresh Finishes

More ornaments by Katherine’s Collection fill a silver sweets stand, and white magnolia and Douglas-fir leaves add freshness to the elegant vignette (above).

Design

Everlasting

BY HILARY MASELL OSWALD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTIN DELL'ORSO

CH&L: This whole place has the feel of timeless coziness. What’s the secret?

Jennifer DesJardin: The homeowner told me she wanted a contemporary design, but then she showed me pictures of classic, elegant, timeless interiors. So we developed a style for her that integrates some contemporary elements—like metallic fabrics and a very cool stainless-steel table—with more classic elements. I think people respond to that marriage.

48

In a Denver home built in the early 20th century, designer Jennifer DesJardin whips up a style that refuses to reveal its age

(above) In the living room, designer Jennifer DesJardin created two separate seating areas instead of using the fireplace as the predictable anchor for the furniture. She removed shelves from the niche and transformed it into a casual spot to lounge, adorned with custom pillows in Kravet fabrics. (opposite) Thanks to the contemporary lines of the other living room furnishings, the fussier silhouettes of these antiques aren’t overwhelming. DesJardin covered both pieces in textured neutrals. “You can use different fabrics on a chair, ottoman and bolster pillow; just choose fabrics with the same colors but different scales, she says. 49

My attitude has always been that you want the architecture and interior of a home to be cohesive, and then you want continuity among the rooms. —Designer Jennifer DesJardin

Is the pairing of old with new hard to get right?

In this case, we had no choice. The home is a riff on Mediterranean style, designed by Burnham Hoyt and built in the early 20th century. My attitude has always been that you want the architecture and interior of a home to be cohesive, and then you want continuity among the rooms. Plus, the homeowner had some family heirlooms we wanted to include, like a settee covered in burgundy upholstery and a little yellow chair with red flowers—very Victorian. She had a few other pieces—a very traditional, ornate mirror, and that stainless-steel table—that she wanted to use, too. I had to find ways to make them all work together. So let us in on your tricks.

In the master bedroom, the design is a play of textures. We picked soothing colors and layered the bed to make it feel soft, like you couldn’t resist touching it. Then I had the owner’s little yellow Victorian chair recovered in a contemporary, metallic print. It’s a bit unexpected, but that’s what makes design exciting to me. The dining room also feels slightly unexpected.

It should! Originally, those chairs were upholstered in a Tuscan chenille fabric that was really heavy and ornate. The walls were burgundy and the drapes were velvet. Everything was so dark! So I painted the walls a lovely, spa green, and we covered the chairs in linen with sparkly nail head details—a nod to tradition. Then we hung metallic sheers over the windows and added a contemporary chandelier from Michael Graves and lamps from Scandinavian Design. One of the walls is covered in textured panels from modularArts. (left) The tiny powder room proves that elegance doesn’t have to be quiet. The high-gloss paint in apple green and the Modello wall patterns come as a surprise, but the simple vanity and travertine top anchor the space. Italian glass fixtures crown the room. (opposite) Once a dark room slathered with burgundy, the dining room now feels airy and sophisticated. The design demonstrates that a few contemporary elements, such as the cloud-like chandelier from Michael Graves, can liven up a more traditional look, like the Henredon table. 50

In a space adjacent to the dining room, this nook pulls double duty as casual eating space and homework spot. DesJardin grounded the rolling stainless-steel table with a built-in banquette strewn with vibrant off-the-shelf pillows that play off the color palettes in the living and dining rooms. The curvy chairs, from 20th-century modernist designer Marcel Breuer, are family heirlooms.

(left) Soft, muted colors and layered textures give the master bedroom a cozy elegance. The little chair was a family heirloom from the Victorian era; thanks to a bold, contemporary fabric, it’s now the conversation piece in this otherwise understated space. (above) Carrara marble bridges the style gap between contemporary and traditional in the master bathroom. The glass tile is sandblasted to remove the shine, and simple cabinets with linear hardware echo the style of the bedroom furniture.

DESIGN DETAILS It seems the moral of the story is you don’t have to choose one design style or era, even if you live in a historic house.

Definitely not. Every room needs a character piece, in my opinion. You want a few things that feel slightly out of context, and blending design styles really accomplishes that. I think the best part of this house is that when we were done, the whole home felt balanced. It’s really a happy place.

WHERE THIS GRACEFUL HOME NESTLES into the steep mountainside on its ski-in/ski-out site near Aspen Mountain, gondolas are strung across the horizon like party lights, and magnificent views stretch from Hunter Creek to Independence Pass. But while the structure appears to hug the mountain effortlessly, its design was anything but effortless. “We always start with the site,” says Aspen architect Charles Cunniffe, who designed the house. “This site, in particular, was (left) A soaring barrel-vaulted hemlock fir ceiling unifies the great room. The expansive fireplace wall is made of sleek bronze and walnut panels surrounded by stonework similar to that of the home’s exterior. The homeowners selected intimate seating that complements the interior finishes and allows the architecture to shine. (above) The centerpiece of the 9,000-square-foot house is a walnut-and-steel staircase that moves fluidly to access each of the three levels. “There is a lot of wood in the house and we created contrast with subtle changes,” says interior designer Donna Guerra. “The hemlock fir ceiling complements the natural walnut floor, allowing the darker trim and cabinetry to have a stronger presence.”

steep and challenging.” He met the challenge with a lyrical design that moves seamlessly among three levels and connects to the outdoors with floor-to-ceiling windows and 2,000 square feet of decks and patios. “The intent was for the house to be sculptural in form—a kind of regional modernism,” explains Cunniffe. Elements of the Colorado vernacular are evident in the generous use of native stone, metal and wood, as well as exposed timber rafters and large overhangs that provide sun shading. “The modern

elements are the overall forms—flat roofs yielding to curves on the exterior and creating open spaces inside,” Cunniffe says. “The curve adds a little elegance to what otherwise would be a flat roof.” Interior designer Donna Guerra of Dallas-based DGA Interiors worked closely with the architect to select finishes that flow from exterior to interior. “We wanted to create a sense of cohesiveness with the natural materials,” Guerra says. She selected wideplank walnut floors, custom-designed rosewood and

(above) Guerra used a stunning array of finishes in the kitchen, from her custom-designed rosewood cabinetry (built by Genesis Innovations in Loveland), to sparkling Midnight Metallica schist countertops and a carbon-finish Sub-Zero refrigerator. Hidden storage on the end wall and large windows make up for the lack of upper cabinets. The kitchen design, with its furniture-quality cabinetry, won a national award from Sub-Zero. (opposite, top) A billiard table, TV, fireplace and game table entice family and friends to gather. A linear-patterned carpet from Truett mimics the look of wood but is softer underfoot. (opposite, bottom) Craftsman-style influence is evident in the office/library, where Guerra custom designed the dark-stained rift-cut oak cabinetry that lines the room. The sleek fireplace wall combines matching oak paneling with Repose tortoise-colored glass tiles from Waterworks and a custom metal ledge. Uplighting on the tray ceiling and a Hubbardton Forge pendant light brighten the room.

58

walnut cabinetry, and hand-picked exquisite glass tiles, marble and stone surfaces. “The interior finishes are a little darker than the outside [finishes] and more dramatic, too,” she says. Drama also comes from the barrel-vaulted ceiling, walls of glass, and a spectacular meandering staircase that allows light and traffic to flow from upper to lower levels. The 9,000-square-foot house is specifically zoned to feel comfortable whether occupied by one person or a crowd. “There is an interesting flow from the entertainment level to very private sleeping spaces,” Guerra

says. “Every room has a different perspective.” The upper level comprises the living room, dining area, kitchen and master bedroom suite, providing singlefloor living for the homeowners. The mid and lower levels house family bedrooms, an office/library, exercise room, media room, recreation space and guest bedrooms. “The design provides ease of movement for the owner, space to closely connect with family and a separate wing for guests,” Cunniffe says. “This house was designed for contemporary living—for a multigenerational family to enjoy the house together.”

(above) Classic-patterned wool carpet from Truett and sumptuous bedding warm the master bedroom. The airy bronze light fixture is from Corbett Lighting. (opposite, top) The bedroom’s neutral colors flow into the spa-like master bathroom where the bathtub is positioned under a window for bathers to take in the views. Custom walnut cabinets are cantilevered with lighting underneath and topped with Nero Marquina Italian marble countertops from Ann Sacks; the Carrara marble flooring is from Waterworks. (opposite, bottom) The outdoor stone fireplace warms a conversation area on cool mountain evenings.

24 Broadmoor Avenue, Colorado Springs

Million Dollar Babies BY PATRICK SORAN

How much house can you get in Colorado for $1 million? Here’s a glimpse of what that price tag will buy from Boulder to Edwards IF THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IS ALL ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE, then now is a terrific time to buy a home in the million-dollar market. Three reasons: First, while asking prices may not have come down in this range, many sellers are willing to negotiate. Second, many million-dollar homes were upgraded while values were on the upswing, so your chances of scoring high-end finishes at lower prices are good. Finally, interest rates are historically low. That all adds up to a homebuyer’s favorite phrase: It’s a buyers’ market. We queried a few home-listing websites to get an idea of the properties Colorado has to offer between $950,000 and $1,100,000. More than 1,400 listings popped up. We combed the field and selected these top-notch properties.

24 Broadmoor Avenue, Colorado Springs $1,100,000 5,977 square feet Catherine Taryle, ReMax Properties, Inc. springsluxe.com

127 Lafayette Street, Denver $1,090,000 3,606 square feet Jim Rhye, Kentwood City Properties kentwoodcity.com

This historic 1910 home resides along the treelined avenue that proceeds to the entrance of the swanky Broadmoor Hotel. “This house offers the best of both worlds,” says realtor Catherine Taryle. “It’s been updated, but retains all its charm.” Updated indeed; it has everything you’d expect at this price point, including granite countertops, multiple fireplaces, large bathrooms, custom built-ins, plus the charm of arched doorways, a bookcaselined den and paved-path landscaping.

This three-bedroom, four-bath beauty pairs an ideal location with exquisite touches. “Spanish tile roofs, divided-light windows, Mediterranean-style architecture, paneled walls and crown moldings,” says listing broker Jim Rhye. Not to mention three fireplaces. But perhaps the greatest asset of all is an address in the Denver Country Club National Historic District. And talk about a bargain: a nearby home sold for more than $700 per square foot; this one lists for just over $300. 127 Lafayette Street, Denver

491 Timber Drive, Winter Park $999,000 3,528 square feet Dennis Saffell, Coldwell Banker Mountain Properties saffellteam.com

“You have to up to go down, says broker/owner Dennis Saffell, describing the layout of this modern mountain home. Its unique “upside-down flow begins with a catwalk that leads to the top of its three floors. Descend from that loft level to the family, dining and kitchen level, then down to the lowest floor, which features a sunken conversation pit. All these rooms open onto a tall atrium with dozens of windows looking onto the Continental Divide. Plus, comparing apples to apples, Saffell says, Winter Park offers far better home values than Summit or Eagle counties. 2835 Links Drive, Boulder $989,000 6,112 square feet Karen Bernardi, Bernardi Real Estate Group bernardirealestate.com

“It’s different here, says broker Karen Bernardi of Colorado’s premier university town. “Your one million won’t go quite as far in the Republic of Boulder as it would in, say, Castle Rock. What it will buy is this comfortable, spacious, remodeled home with hardwood and slate finishes and a manageable backyard. Included in the price is Boulder itself, which has made it through the housing downturn relatively unscathed and offers a health-conscious outdoor lifestyle, high-tech employers and cherished greenbelts. 90 Rowel Drive, Edwards $985,000 3,071 square feet Doug Landin, Slifer, Smith & Frampton Real Estate landinvail.com

Tucked into a hillside and backing onto open space, this four-bedroom, fourbath, Southwest-style home exudes a sense of cozy comfort. Radiant heat warms the Saltillo tile floors, Douglas fir trees form ceiling beams and an open floor plan invites guests to flow easily from space to space. Southwest style in Vail? “There’s actually a good bit of it up here; a lot of folks love it, says listing broker Doug Landin, 2011 chairman of the Vail Board of Realtors. This home offers the look in spades with its stucco walls and toasty colors. Landin sums up Vail Valley’s million-dollar market in four words: “Bring us an offer, he says, insisting that there’s a lot of inventory. “A lot.

Up the road—and down a beat—from Aspen, the small railroad town of Basalt delivers big culture

For a brisk angler’s afternoon:

Taylor Creek Fly Shop

For upscale Spanish-Italian fare and a posh scene: Tempranillo For real-deal tapas and paella crafted by Madrid native Javier Gonzalez-Bringas (whose wife, Laura, helps run the restaurant), be sure to get on the books for one of Tempranillo’s 100 coveted seats, 19 of which surround a long community table. Find perfect sips on the 100vintage-long wine list, or go sweet with the house sangria, chock-full of fruit. 165 Midland Ave. tempranillorestaurant.com

Escape the busy ski runs by spending a quiet winter afternoon on a stretch of famous goldmedal water with one of the Taylor Creek guides (some of these fellas have been casting flies for 20-plus years). The fish are biting— and bigger—during the winter, the fly-shop veterans say, and with water flow and levels down, you’ll likely be able to spot more beauties, too. 183 Basalt Center Cir. taylorcreek.com

{ LESLIE UHL

Husband-and-wife owners Mitch and Krystal Levy have a simple, noble philosophy: master the art of pairing food with wine, make locals and visitors feel welcome, and keep the prices approachable. Case in point: pair any appetizer on the happy hour menu with a $10-or-less glass of vino—choose from more than 70 wines by the glass—and get out the door for $10 (plus tax and tip). 305 Gold Rivers Ct. cuveebistro.com Facebook.com/CHLmagazine Have a favorite Basalt hotspot to share? COLORADO STAY Turn a day trip into an overnight at the Lodge at River’s Edge, and sink into a down-filled mattress draped in 1,000-threadcount Egyptian cotton in one of four charming, waterside guest rooms—or check into the private restored cabin built in 1896 by Colorado Midland Railroad workers.

Café Bernard

For the happiest hour of all: Cuvée World Bistro

Denver

FOR A FULL DAY

For a magnifique start to your day: According to the locals, this rustic French gem is where “cowboys eat croissants.” Try delicacies like the Parisienne french toast and smoked trout hash—or snatch up one of the pastries made fresh daily (just don’t dawdle; these babies go fast). 200 Midland Ave. (970) 927-4292

Basalt

For a study in sophisticated Western art:

Ann Korologos Gallery While the works of art that grace the walls at this erudite gallery share a common Western thread, they’re far from trite: abstract paintings share quarters with impressionist scenes and sculpture. The art is practically as varied as the background of the curator herself, who has formerly held posts as U.S. Secretary of Labor and chair of the Aspen Institute. 211 Midland Ave. korologosgallery.com

SHOP Find modern home furnishings by Knoll, Gus Modern and Blu Dot at Montecito Loft & Home, and any kitchen gadget a chef could dream of at Kitchen Collage, plus more hip retailers—all at the mixed-use Willits Town Center, just a skip from downtown Basalt. 10 Things...

10 things you should know about

serving

wine for the holidays

1

Break out the bubbles. Crémant, a sparkling wine, is what the locals drink in France; it results from the same production method as Champagne but costs considerably less. Or try a Bugey-Cerdon, an off-dry, sparkling rosé that’s perfect for the holidays. Pairings don’t have to be impeccable. Holiday meals, especially Thanksgiving dinner, often have diverse flavors, making pairings tricky. So just relax, open a lighter red like a Barbera or Pinot Noir and an easy white like a Riesling or Pinot Gris, and enjoy. Keep the party going. Consumption varies from person to person, but a good rule of thumb is to provide two glasses per person for the first hour (one bottle contains six four-ounce pours) and one glass per person per hour thereafter—or about one bottle for every two guests. But you know your friends best. Give the perfect holiday gift bottle. (Hint: it doesn’t have to be perfect.) When selecting a bottle for that special someone, or even your boss, you don’t have to go over the top with a big-name brand. Opt for something funky, delicious and affordable instead (here’s where a good local merchant can help). Then revel in the frugality and rent a Santa suit with the money you saved. Don’t apologize for Colorado wine. Our grapes grow in some of the highest-elevation vineyards in the world, and the mountain climate provides warm days and cool nights—exactly what grapes like. Check out Denver’s Infinite Monkey Theorem label; $1 of every bottle sold goes to The University of Colorado Cancer Center. It’s giving at its best.

Consider temperature. Most of us serve our whites too cold, masking the wine’s flavors, or our reds too warm, making them volatile and unbalanced. Serve light or sweet whites, sparkling wines and rosés at 45-50°F; heavy whites and lighter reds at 50-55°F; and heavy and aged red wines at 60-65°F. Mulled wine—don’t. If you want to serve something warm and alcoholic, spike your hot chocolate or heat up your eggnog. Wine and headaches, demystified. Wine allergies affect about eight percent of the population, and less than one percent of those reactions involve sulfites. Scientists believe glycoproteins—proteins coated with sugars produced naturally as grapes ferment—may be responsible for the remaining seven percent. So if wine gives you a headache, drink something else. And quit blaming the sulfites! A nice thought, but (often) bad practice. One story behind the origin of the word “toast,” meaning a wish of good health, goes that the custom started in ancient Rome, where a piece of toasted bread was dropped into wine. If you feel compelled to raise your glass this season, think twice about whether the words you have to share are, in fact, comical or sincere (not silly or overly sentimental). We’ve all been subjected to one too many bad toasts. Make a new kind of resolution. Try these: Drink more bubbly. Find a wine merchant you like who will take the time to get to know your tastes. Don’t buy wine based on scores. And take everything a socalled wine expert tells you with a grain of salt. After all, it’s only wine. —Doug Krenik, Master Sommelier
