Summer, I love thee…

When I first lived in a place with four distinct seasons, I was a freshman at a North Carolina college. I realized then why people love seasons so much. It’s fun to change our lifestyles (and décor) every few months. We nest in the fall, gussy up in the winter, clean out in the spring...and in the summer, we relax. I love summer for that very reason. Sure, I enjoy the long evening hours and the warm temperatures, but the whole season has a fabulously casual vibe that I relish. Lounge in the backyard with a glass of wine and the people you love. Don’t wear shoes. Throw decorative linen pillows on the couch— and leave them where they land. I can’t get enough. This issue is our annual tribute to summer living. You’ll find interiors inspired by the landscape, and outdoor spaces designed for season-long fun. Discover pieces of outdoor furniture so beautiful, you’ll wish you could use them year-round. And when you’re finished with the issue, go online to coloradohomesmag.com, and check out our web-exclusive story about how to whip up a whole meal—from apps to dessert—on the grill. And then...just relax. Happy reading,

I GREW UP IN NAPLES, Florida, where there are two seasons: rainy and tourist. From May to November, it rains most afternoons. From November to May, the tourists flock to the Gulf shore. Residents mark the passage of time by how long they have to wait to get seats at their favorite restaurants. The temperature hardly varies year-round, and the plants are always blooming.

HERE AT CH&L, we try not to take ourselves too seriously. And we like to think we can learn from—and poke gentle fun at—where we’ve been. That’s why all year, we’ll unearth treasures from the CH&L archives. We’ll bring you rooms that show how far Colorado design has come, snippets from stories that we hope will make you chuckle, and cover images that will give you an idea of CH&L style from the early days. Even though we hope these pages will elicit a few laughs, they’ll also prove what we learn issue after issue—that good design is in fact an evolution.

Frightening Frills: Who would have thought to accessorize with that? THIS MONTH, WE’VE GONE BACK AND UNEARTHED some of those most curious accessories that topped the tables and filled the corners of homes featured in the past pages of CH&L. Our May/June 1983 issue introduced a gaggle of ceramic French farm animals (that look more creepy than quaint), towering candelabras that resemble sports trophies, and a ruffled heart-shaped decorative pillow that aspired to make Valentine’s Day a year-round holiday. Then there are the items curated in a story called “The Functions of Humor,” from our January/February 1990 issue, which delivered a nothing-short-of-absurd mix of relics: a “coyote box with removable drawer,” a birdhouse on a stand, and a table with carved, cartoonish mountain lions in place of its legs. (We can’t seem to find the funny in this roundup.) And last, but not least: a lovely array of textiles from September/October 1989 that manage to make flowers frightening.

All in the Family

AFTER 20 YEARS, LOCAL ARTIST QUANG HO returns to illustration with a delightful children’s book called Ansel and the Great Tree. The story is written by Ho’s mother-in-law, Rose Switzer, and pairs with a full symphonic score composed by Switzer’s son, Matthew, assistant principal cellist for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. (They hope to include a CD with the book.) And here’s one more local tie-in: Ho modeled the boy in the story after the son of Colorado chef Frank Bonanno of Luca D’Italia, Mizuna, Osteria Marco and Bones restaurants in Denver. Copies of the gorgeously illustrated book are available at quangho.com, and at the Art Students League of Denver’s Annual Summer Art Market, June 12-13. This fall, see the original paintings on display at The Children’s Hospital, and buy your copy knowing part of the proceeds go back to the hospital.

Our Favorite Room

[

]

We find the rooms that feel just right— and then reveal how to get the look.

BY CAROLINE EBERLY

PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

J. CURTIS

WHERE IT BEGAN: When you find a good home on the right-sized lot in a great location, you become concerned with refining, revamping and—if you’re a family with two young kids—expanding what you’ve got. To realize their remodeling goals, the family who lives in this 1970s home, which had strong bones but was dated in style, called in Studiotrope Design Collective’s Joseph Montalbano and Kelton Osborn (now an entrepreneurial designer with his own gig, Quick Bend Design). The homeowners needed more family-friendly space and a means to enjoy the outdoors. (The yard,

which neighbors a golf course, lacked order and a sense of privacy from nearby golfers.) “There was definitely this motivation to get more of a sense of connection to the outside from the inside,” Osborn says. The solution—this outdoor living room—is near magic. The space connects to an adjacent indoor family room, also added as part of the project, and opens up the family’s home—and lifestyle—to the outdoors. With the help of large windows, a double-sided fireplace that faces both indoor and outdoor family areas, and an al fresco eating area, the outdoor space becomes an extension of the way the family lives indoors.

You love this room (just like we do).

PERFECT TOUCHES: Instead of using walls and doors to define the space, Osborn invented a series of “shutters”— crafted out of powder-coated steel and set on rollers—that can be moved back and forth to achieve just the right amount of privacy and shade. A gas-lit fireplace warms the space during cool evenings, adding to the ambience and making the outdoor room suitable for three seasons of use. For the flooring, Osborn chose a low-maintenance wood alternative called Brasilia by Trex (in Cayenne). “The homeowners wanted to keep the maintenance factor down to as little as possible,” Osborn explains. “That was one of the things that helped guide us with the materials we chose.” Cream-colored stucco and dark-charcoal roofing are punctuated by pops of color—yellow surrounding the fireplace and maroon for the windows and beams—that resurrected the home from a dated brown-and-white color scheme. HOW IT WORKS: In the end, the outdoor living area works with the indoor living room to function as one big family room. It’s a success for the family, Osborn says: “The homeowners use the outdoors a lot more. They dine out there and the children play tennis on the court. It’s become the center of the house.”

You have some open space on your property, and you’re feeling ambitious, but you have no idea where to start. How about right here, with a little help from architect Kelton Osborn? Let’s start with site planning. What should you keep in mind when choosing the right spot? For this project and a lot of other projects, start with the sun. It’s nice to have shade in the middle of the summer; in the winter, it’s nice to have that sunlight come into the space and warm you up. So you should look for a space that can offer both sun and shade. What about lighting for after the sun goes down? In this space, we chose lighting that’s on a dimmer for nighttime. There’s the capacity to have bright light if you need it, but if you’re having a dinner party, you probably want dimmer light. With so many hard surfaces, how can you make an outdoor living space feel less like a patio and more like... a room? Bring the landscape into the space if

you can. Landscaping adds another layer of texture and richness to architecture, and it can help soften things if they’re too hard with just the architecture. It’s nice to have the color and softness of the plants. The fireplace you designed here is very cool. Tell us about it. I think it’s a really nice feature. It’s gas, so you don’t have to worry about the mess of a wood-burning fireplace. It’s another way to help define a space within a space; you could have more intimate seating beside a fireplace, and maybe that’s adjacent to a more public space that has a larger table for a crowd of people. How can you connect an outdoor living space back to the home itself? If the space is next to the house, having windows that look out onto the space is a nice way to get that visual connection from inside to outside. Especially if you’re having a party with people both inside and outside, it will give a sense of connection among people, even if they’re inside.

Pat Pearce General/Artistic Director of the Central City Opera BY HILARY MASELL OSWALD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARTIN CRABB

PAT PEARCE HAS A LOT ON HIS MIND. NOW IN HIS 12TH YEAR AS THE HEAD honcho at the Central City Opera, Pearce is responsible for the opera’s artistic life and its bottom line. And right now, he’s rubbing his head, trying to figure out how to bring an art form that’s several hundred years old to a new generation of music-lovers—most of whom are digital-device-toting, Internet-dependent, text-messaging adults. “I’m confident in my ability to produce this art form,” says the Mobile, Ala., native—whose Southern lilt is hard to miss. “But I’m a 50-something-year-old guy who has to figure out a business model that will sustain us in the future. That’s just consuming my psyche at the moment.” He sighs and rubs his head again. No doubt Pearce feels the weight of the Central City Opera’s profound history—and its recognition as one of the nation’s finest summer opera festivals. In 1877, the citizens of Central City, feeling flush with the riches of local mines, decided they wanted an opera house, so they raised the funds necessary to build it. A few short years later, the mines dried up—and so did support for the opera until 1932, when locals led an effort to restore the opera house and launched the Central City Opera. Seventy-eight years later, this jewel-box theater (which seats only 550 people) is the Central City Opera’s most distinctive feature—and one of Pearce’s biggest headaches. As an artist, he loves the challenge the house presents. “The art is different [in such a small space],” he explains. “Everything has to be good—really good—in our house because the audience can see everything: if a

WE WERE JUST WONDERING... When you’re not listening to opera, what type of music do you like? Ha! I’ll tell you: There’s a station on Sirius Radio called BPM. It plays Beyoncé, Lady Gaga—music that doesn’t really engage my intellect. It’s just rhythm and wailin’. What’s your favorite spot for southern fare in Colorado? I don’t have one. I’ve tried the gumbo [at different restaurants] around town and none of it tasted right to me. And to be honest, the idea of seafood in this land-locked state bothers me a bit. What do you miss most about the South? The water and the color green. And the smells. They’re magnified by humidity. [Laughs.] That can be good or bad because, let’s be honest, on the coast, the most common smell is dying sea life.

At Home With...

What’s your favorite indulgence? Some people would say I indulge in shoes. Others would say cars, older model cars. Oh, and I really like watches. You know, I like beautiful things that you can still enjoy whether you get fat or thin. If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be? You know, I’ve thought about that lately. [Laughs.] And I really can’t think of anything I’d rather do than this job. But if this were taken away from me, I’d still want to work to create beauty. I could sell shoes, as long as the shoes were beautiful. Non-beauty represents mediocrity to me, and it’s so prevalent. I want to do something that creates beauty. That’s what we do on the hill [in Central City]. We create beauty.

hem is straight, if the performers can act. Everything.” But as a business director, Pearce wishes the theater housed 3,000. Therein lies the rub. Pearce is as passionate about the art as he is perplexed by how he’s going to carry it into the 21st century. “We’re not going to change the art, the core of what we do,” Pearce says. “It’s the delivery system we have to figure out.” In the meantime, the Opera is set to launch its summer music festival on June 26. Each year, Pearce selects three different productions: one traditional opera, one lesser-known opera and one new work. This year, the Opera’s season opens with Madama Butterfly, a perennial favorite that Pearce calls “simply a great piece.” Next up is Orpheus in the Underworld, “a crazy satire,” according to Pearce, which begins as the mythical Greek hero Orpheus begrudgingly heads to Hades to rescue his estranged wife, Eurydice. (Audience members will recognize the famous “can-can” music in this operetta.) The festival’s final offering is Three Decembers, a new work by American composer Jake Heggie that tells the story of a famous actress and her dysfunctional relationships with her adult children. “It’s like watching a soap opera,” Pearce laughs. Chatting with Pearce about what happens in an opera house is enchanting, and anyone who thinks the opera is a snooze should spend a few minutes listening to him describe the experience. “People didn’t write this stuff because they were going to get rich doing it. They wanted to communicate a message about humanity and emotion and passion in a genuine way,” he says. “Then in live performance, just feet from your face in our house, [the performers] create a world you can’t resist. They make you feel like you’re right there, and before you know it, you’re on your feet, screaming and clapping— and for a few hours, you are free from yourself. That’s why I love it.” The irony is palpable. Pearce is dedicated to preserving this experience for generations of music-lovers—and yet he has that wistful look of a man who wouldn’t mind being free from the pressing questions for a short while to escape into the beauty he works so hard to create and protect.

KAYE L. HURTT’S FAVORITE TOOL IS AN UNUSUAL ONE FOR A GARDENER. It is not a particular pair of Fiskars pruners, a trowel, or even a fancy, no-turning-needed composter. It’s a paintbrush. A former stay-at-home mom, Hurtt began volunteering at Denver Botanic Gardens once her kids were grown, and in 1996, a friend suggested she take one of the garden’s botanic illustration courses. (Hurtt had no background in art, but had always been creative.) She discovered a talent and love for watercolor. (above) Large containers allow homeowner Kaye Hurtt to add tropical annuals (reminiscent of her second home in Hawaii) to sweet potato vines, salvia and other native plants in her Denver garden. The weeping redbud between the planters provides the bones of a tree, without taking up the space a larger species would. (right) Hurtt usually brings cuttings inside so she can sketch for hours, if not days. But she also makes the most of the right light during a few en plein air sessions.

So she started painting hyper-detailed images of flora (both flowers and foliage) for family and friends, and then began selling some commissions. Now her paper works are also sold to raise funds for local charities, including The Gathering Place and the Anchor Center for Blind Children. (You can see her works at kayehurtt.com and at a few shops around town, including Denver Botanic Gardens.) Hurtt works on tracing paper, drawing one section of a plant, then starting with a fresh sheet and drawing another. “I do a series of sections and then overlay them until it looks interesting. Once I have all those pieces and layers, I tape it all together and do one sketch, and then I paint.” This deliberative approach to seeing plants also extends to her gardening, which has evolved to accommodate her new pastime. In both planting and painting, “it is the composition that is the most challenging,” she says. “In painting you have the ability to check it out and start over; it is only a piece of paper. But in both cases you are taking elements that anyone could have access to and making them appealing in a new way.” Hurtt used to compose and garden on a 2.5-acre property in Cherry Hills that she and her husband owned. When they moved back to the city in 2005, they opted to build anew on a standard city lot, and hired Lynn M. Gregory of the Denver landscaping firm Chelsea Gardens to plan a formal English garden from the ground up. The goal was plenty of year-round interest (one of Gregory’s specialties), with bright-colored flowers and interesting, lowmaintenance, long-blooming foliage that Hurtt could paint. “It takes me a couple of weeks to do a painting, so I need access to something that keeps blooming,” Hurtt says. While she can paint from her own sketches or photographs, she prefers to have a “live specimen” in front of her. But a live specimen, of course, wilts and dies when it’s cut, so she needs to be able to easily snip another from the garden. “The kind of painting I do is all-consuming.” Among her favorite blooms to paint are blue pansies, orange tulips, roses of all kinds and pink Stargazer lilies, because of their bright colors and intricate details. Even the shady side of the garden is filled with paintable plantings, such as three different varieties of hosta, one of the artist’s favorite plants. The fact that the Denver climate doesn’t allow for year-round blooms hasn’t slowed Hurtt down either. The yard also includes plantings that provide winter interest, such as Arborvitae evergreen, English ivy, Lenten rose and dwarf Japanese maple. And both Hurtt and Gregory count the weeping redbud as one of the best elements in the garden, in summer or winter. “The outline of the tree is great, even when the leaves are gone,” Gregory says—a testament to what Hurtt has found to be true: that in both gardening and art, beauty is in the composition. (left) Garden designer Lynn M. Gregory didn’t have the space for a full formal English garden, so she designed four wintergreen boxwood hedges surrounding perennials like roses, delphinium (Black Knight and Summer Skies) and purple salvia (pictured above). Hurtt wanted an heirloom rose garden in order to paint the blossom’s variety of hot colors. (right) Gregory worked within the constraints of a small city lot to create visual interest as well as privacy from the neighbors. Large pots on either side of the water feature include Prunus ‘Crimson Cascade.’

A Work of Art A young Boulder family built a light-filled contemporary home to showcase both their stunning art collection and the Flatirons’ age-old beauty. BY ELISABETH A. SULLIVAN

HOME DESIGN ENTHUSIASTS OFTEN WALK AROUND

with detailed mental images of homes we’d like to build or spaces we’d like to renovate. We carefully consider their style, their siting, how the sunlight would filter into the living room just so. For Kim Chanin, such daydreaming went from an abstract idea to a concrete—limestone, actually—reality. An art consultant by trade, Chanin has a penchant for contemporary art and architecture. She had a front-row seat for the conception and construction of Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art while serving on its board and was inspired by its rectangular form and open, light-filled spaces. She imagined what it would be like to build a home to suit her own contemporary and modern art collection. “I could see it all in my head. I could envision the architecture, the interiors, the fabrics, the palettes—everything was there,” she says. One day, Chanin sat down and sketched her dream (left) The living room of the Chanins’ home provides ample seating for a fireside chat. Guests can perch on the vintage Danish modern sofa by Milo Baughman found on 1stdibs.com, the Coach leather sofa from Baker Furniture, the traditional armchairs or the Barcelona stools. Boldly patterned drapes in Kelly Wearstler’s Imperial Trellis print for Schumacher & Co. envelope the room in voluptuous folds of linen and draw the eye out to the verdant views of the Flatirons. (above) In the entry—which is blessed with soft, natural light filtering in through the open staircase—the Chanins hung two large paintings by artist and friend Robert Kelly above the white credenza from BDDW in New York. The same limestone used on the home’s exterior continues into the stairwell. (right) Completed in 2007, the Chanins’ home epitomizes the midcentury modern aesthetic, bringing together natural and manmade elements in its limestone, mahogany, glass and steel façade.

home’s façade, all clean lines and horizontal planes. Then she and her husband, Jim, a builder, teamed up with Boulder-based Knudson Gloss Architects and friend and interior designer Kristina Baker of 3BY in Denver to bring that sketch to life. The result is a contemporary masterpiece in Boulder made of limestone, mahogany, glass and steel with open, airy living spaces and expansive windows. “The whole back of the house is glass,” Chanin says, to make the most of the home’s natural setting and to fill the south-facing living spaces with sunlight. That natural light, bouncing softly off of light oak floors, creates the perfect setting for showcasing the Chanins’ art collection. And art is, indeed, life for the Chanins: Two paintings by Robert Kelly—commissioned for the home in honor of the Chanins’ twin children—hang in the entry. A painting by abstract artist Robert Rauschenberg adorns the master bathroom. A large, bronze chicken sculpture stands sentry on the patio. To complement the artwork, Chanin worked with Baker to create an interior design scheme that’s “Seattle-modern” juxtaposed with lush fabrics and traditional furniture that has an East-Coast twist, Baker says. “It’s an unusually warm house for a home that’s contemporary.” Adds Chanin: “I wanted it to be a family house. I didn’t want it to be a showpiece house. We liked the traditional mixed with something fun and modern.” In the living room, a vintage coffee table, a Danish modern sofa by Milo Baughman and a pair of Barcelona stools mingle with traditional armchairs and a contemporary tripod floor

The Chanins brought the dining room table and chairs from their former home and crowned the space with a circa-1950s Venetian chandelier—a vintage touch in the otherwise contemporary corner. The dividing wall conceals a play area for the couple’s young children.

lamp from BDDW in New York. A subtle palette, a low-slung scale and a sense of floating “legginess” tie the furnishings together—as do the graphic drapes, which succeed at both enveloping the room in voluptuous folds of linen and drawing the eye out to the verdant views of the Flatirons. The kitchen is a work of art in its own right, a study in streamlined form and high-efficiency function. Everything from the cabinets and the hood to the countertop and the kitchen table— even the faucet for the kitchen sink—was custombuilt by bulthaup, a cutting-edge kitchen design firm from Germany. Storage is hidden behind glass panels. Two Sub-Zero refrigerators are concealed by walnut laminate. “Everything has a place. It’s very German that way,” Chanin says. “It was indulgent to do, but I think it’s really cool.” Echoes Baker, “It’s so bespoke; every detail has been considered.” Though the Chanins’ home, full of right angles and vintage furnishings, is the epitome of high design, it’s decidedly kid-friendly for the couple’s

young son and daughter. The family’s pool plays host to all of the neighborhood kids throughout the summer and the backyard includes a rock garden with big boulders that the kids can climb on. “It’s like high design met with practicality, and they ended up with a really family-friendly home,” Baker says. (above) In the powder room, Chanin and Baker laid Luxor Grey limestone tile from Ann Sacks in a herringbone pattern on one wall and then brightened up the space with Schumacher & Co.’s Chiang Mai Dragon wallpaper, a whimsical print with serpentine dragons peeking out of vibrant foliage. They installed a wallmounted Duravit sink and vanity, and hung an antique chandelier above it. “I wanted there to be drama in the powder room,” Chanin says. The headboard is upholstered in Raoul Textiles fabric, the pattern for which began as a watercolor painting.

Design IS IN THE

Details A Denver garden designer reveals how she has transformed her home and garden into a cohesive, fresh retreat.

(right) For garden designer Clari Davis, the most important element in designing a home is balance between the exterior and the interior. Here, the cement planters filled with globe arborvitae are repeated in the front courtyard and in the backyard to provide continuity between the spaces. Inside, Davis used circular shapes and a neutral palette—both reminiscent of the round planters guests pass on their way in. (opposite) Using indoor plants and floral elements in the sunroom creates a balance between the garden and the home’s interior. The floral plates by Robert Mapplethorpe add to the circular motif found throughout the home.

CLARI DAVIS HAS ACHIEVED THE DREAM that has eluded many a homeowner: a sense of peace in her home. Built in the 1950s and remodeled several times through the last 30 years, this Hilltop-neighborhood gem is a quiet sanctuary. From the contemporary gardens to the cool and sophisticated interior, the home is a work of balance both inside and out. We sat down with Ms. Davis to find out just how she created this timeless, Zen-like abode. CH&L: You are a garden designer by profession. Tell us how designing for the outdoors inspired your design choices for your own home.

Clari Davis: My primary rule is that the exterior should be indicative of the interior; there should be a good balance between the two. When we first considered remodeling 30 years ago, we were supposed to be just adding one room to the back of the house, a studio for me. Then one thing led to another and we were redoing the whole house. My son is an

architect and designed the contemporary space, which turned out to be a great feat of engineering. I designed the garden with lots of woody materials, lots of green, to bring to the garden the same serene feel as the interior. I get a great sense of peace when looking out into the garden. Your use of a neutral palette with pops of color here and there is so crisp and modern, with just the right touch of playfulness. What inspired your color choices?

It’s peaceful. It’s basic. With the neutral palette I can introduce any color. Right now I’m into lime green. I’ve tried a more vivid overall color palette over the years, but because I work with color all day, I need to come home to peace. It’s important to keep a sense of cohesiveness in a small house, and a neutral palette makes it easy to move things from room to room. Tell us about your art collection. It’s such an eclectic mix.

I have spent a lifetime collecting. Most of the pieces are regional, although I do have a Russian piece I purchased from a gallery in downtown Denver, as well as a Japanese piece. I also own six botanicals, which I love; they were painted by my daughter-in-law, Marian Davis, who is actually a cardiopulmonary nurse by profession. The ceramic sculpture in the living room is by Bob Smith; it was produced using the Raku firing process and comes apart in at least a dozen pieces.

(top) The horse sculpture and gold willowy silhouette are by Colorado artist Wayne Salge; the monotypes are by Enrico Embroli. With its sleek-lined sculptural grace, the Mies van der Rohe-designed leather and chrome chair from Design Within Reach completes the modern art-gallery feel. (above) Davis had shelving added to showcase her collection of Danish stainless-steel sculptures and the tea sets she has been collecting for her granddaughters. The timeless rosewood dining set is by Christian of Copenhagen, purchased 35 years ago. (right) The custom bold geometric rug by EMW Furniture provides a focal point for the living room while still maintaining the home’s neutral palette. With her eye for timeless style, Davis purchased the chic sofas 20 years ago. They still wear their original upholstery.

60

There are lots of nooks around the house that store various treasures. How did you arrive at this architectural detail?

I have a collection of Danish stainless steel sculptures and a collection of tea services—each of my six granddaughters will one day get a [tea service]—so I had shelves added to showcase them. I love stainless steel and silver.

(top) Ferns, boxwood, globe arborvitae and Mugo pine create a restful environment while a flagstone seating area adds composition and texture. “It is really, really nice to come home to,” says Davis. (right) As the back garden is 95 percent shade, its contents are primarily green texture with many woody elements. The benefit of so many green elements, says Davis, is that the garden “pretty much holds its own in the winter.” To complement the lime green accents indoors, Davis added lime green containers on the patio table. “I’m a theme designer, I truly am,” she says. (opposite) To create a balanced flow from the patio to the sunroom, Davis pulled up six rows of flooring along the windows and added river rock. Gracing the table is a recycled aluminum lamp from Anthropologie.

62

(above) The kitchen was remodeled in 1990. Davis’s love for silver inspired her to select stainless-steel appliances and a stainlesssteel top for the island, which perfectly complements the sleek white lacquer cabinetry. A sculptural metal stool from Mod Livin’ in Denver adds interest. (above, right) The kitchen cabinets are glass on both sides, allowing natural light to filter through the room. When the kitchen designer brought glass samples, Davis was instantly drawn to the dot pattern. The circles make an otherwise plain white kitchen pop with imaginative detailing.

64

Looking around your home, we’re taken by the unusual details you’ve integrated into the house—especially the rocks that line the sunroom window.

Three years ago, out of the blue, I pulled up six rows of the wood flooring [to fill the space with river rock that matched a similar detail on the outdoor patio]. [My husband] Bob came home one day and found me doing it. He nearly went crazy, but I just felt like I had to do it. The concept is Asian; I have lots of Asian furniture, so I felt like adding the rock tied the theme together and also helped link the outdoor space to the interior.

Tell us what you love most about your garden.

It is lovely and shady, and especially pretty at night. I also have a water feature, which is very peaceful. Because it’s a shade garden, it is ninety-five percent green texture. I have lots of woody materials, ferns, boxwoods and other green materials. It is so peaceful, and just really nice to come home to.

Taking Flight This aviation-inspired home, with an attached hangar and nearby runway, offers an entirely new take on indooroutdoor living.

As soon as Cathleen Van Buskirk began flying four years ago, she wanted her own plane. And as soon as she bought one, she longed to be able to step out her front door and take off at a moment’s notice. “I didn’t want to drive to an airport to fly,” says Van Buskirk, a spinal surgeon at Boulder Community Hospital. “If you’re totally passionate about aviation, you want to live it.” The result is Airpark Residence, a home that showcases innovative design, evokes the spirit of flight and serves as an exquisite monument to indooroutdoor living. Alongside the landing strip of the Erie Municipal Airport, the 9,100-square-foot structure sits on Cessna Drive, where the yellow crossing signs show small black airplanes and nearly every home has a hangar. The building’s varied geometric shapes and sleek lines bring to mind a modern art 67

museum, and the two separate roofs of home and hangar slant inward, creating a slight wing-like V. Inside, the vast living room windows provide a constantly shifting tableau of gliding planes, jutting mountains and endless sky. When Studiotrope Design Collective architects Joseph Montalbano and Dana Grassmid began the project in 2007, they developed imagery that would suggest not only principles familiar to aviation, but also to Van Buskirk’s surgical profession. They pasted words like “precision” and “controlled risk” onto paper with corresponding pictures, and referred to that collage as they sketched the building’s ultimate design. “We were inspired by the instruments of flight,” Montalbano says. “In an airplane, you have this array of technology, so we wanted to be very deliberate about the directions and the axial lines.” The walkway that leads from hangar to home features a ceiling reinforced by horizontal steel beams to resemble a giant spine. And it also serves as a sort of runway to the center of the house and on to stairs that lead to what Van Buskirk calls “the Cockpit”—a loft-like office that looks out at the airfield. “I get to sit here and watch planes take off and land,” Van Buskirk says, gazing out at the sky. “I’ve been here over a year, and still, when I hear an airplane taking off or landing, I have to run to the window and see what kind it is.”

Van Buskirk used splashes of color—like this moss green in the dining room—to accent the home’s black-and-white palette.

69

70

(above) Van Buskirk’s favorite part of her house is the way the roof—cantilevered and rotated at an angle—seems to take off, “as if in flight.” The lap pool faces south for maximum sun exposure. (left) For her master suite, she and the Studiotrope architects aimed for a relaxing atmosphere. (right) More than 3,500 square feet, this creatively designed hangar was built to house a larger plane, since Van Buskirk plans to upgrade as she becomes a more seasoned pilot.

On the weekends, Van Buskirk readies her plane while gazing out the hangar’s window at the home’s narrow lap pool and the Front Range mountains beyond. Then she climbs into the cockpit, rolls outside and lifts into the air. She often flies to New Mexico to visit friends; recently she flew to Steamboat for lunch. Airpark’s interiors—black and white with splashes of color—are just as flightfocused as the exteriors. The ceiling fans uncannily resemble plane propellers. The living room, furnished with a leather couch and cowhide chairs, is accented by a commissioned painting composed of multi-colored wooden strips arrayed on black canvas in a haphazard pattern, as if scattered by the wind. It’s a reminder of the powerful force that first captivated Van Buskirk when as a novice pilot she climbed into a friend’s Super Decathlon. He soared into the air, doing hammerheads, loops and spins. Says Van Buskirk: “It was the best adrenaline rush of my life.” Just as the home’s architecture provides light, views and flight-inspired visuals, Van Buskirk used the interiors to evoke the natural world. A stainless steel square with mounted river stones hangs in the living room, while down in the white-tiled den, a black-and-silver painting is adorned with white stones. Such natural touches, combined with the master bed- and bathrooms’ dark woods, soft lighting and gray tile, give the home a Zen-like feel. After a long day of performing surgeries, Van Buskirk can soak in her bath, swim laps in the pool or lounge on the patio and wave at neighbors wheeling past in planes along the airstrip. And when she’s ready to take off again, she heads to the hangar and into the sky.

Home on the [FRONT] Range A region on the rebound: Here’s the snapshot. BY CHERYL MEYERS

COLORADANS REFER TO THE URBAN CORRIDOR between Pueblo and the Wyoming state line as the Front Range, where prairie runs headlong into high peaks, and undeveloped land leads to master-planned communities. The landscape of the Front Range may be varied, but its cities’ market trends are similar, says Jay Gupta, owner-broker of Prudential Rocky Mountain Realtors and Colorado Association of Realtors board member. Take the recent economic downturn: the three biggest cities— Fort Collins, Denver and Colorado Springs—didn’t see a huge decline in housing prices, says Gupta. Sure, sales took a hit and inventory skyrocketed between 2007 and 2009, but that had more to do with buyer confidence and distressed properties than actual plunging values. Prices remained relatively stable because the Front Range didn’t see a housing-price bubble like other parts of the county. And for the really good news: according to the most recent numbers, inventory and transaction numbers across the Front Range are on their way back to 2005 levels, says Gupta. Wondering where to buy? See our quick snapshot of the Front Range’s “big three” cities.

DENVER

HOT PROPERTIES

Population: 566,974 (in the city) History: Mining town-turned-transportation hub and state capitol, turned oil-boom and -bust town. Today Denver is a vibrant, gentrifiedyuppie and young-family outpost. Draw: State jobs and population center; big city with neighborhood living; proximity to mountains and international airport; variety of housing stock. Good for: Professionals, young and old, families, empty nesters; the diversity of properties and neighborhoods offers something for everyone. Realtor’s Forecast: “The Denver housing market’s inventory and prices are stabilizing. We have begun to see more buyers in all price ranges entering the market compared to 2009. We’ve also started to see properties sell in all price ranges. I think we are in for more level pricing in 2010—it’s becoming a more equal market between buyers and sellers.” —Dee Chirafisi, Broker, Kentwood City Properties

FLYING HORSE RANCH

COLORADO SPRINGS

FORT COLLINS

Population: 372,437 History: Early 1900s vacation destination and health retreat, turned military center during World War II. Now it’s a high-tech and military center with conservative values. Draw: Proximity to mountains; stable, defense-based economy (Air Force Academy, NORAD and military bases); smaller-town feel than Denver with low housing prices. Good for: Families, retirees, students, military employees and more. Realtor’s Forecast: “Right now we have low interest rates and very attractive prices. The only thing that is missing is consumer confidence. Unless the economy takes a dive or the interest rates go up considerably, my feeling for 2010 is we are going to have steady, incremental increases in the housing market to bring us back to 2007 levels.” —Jay Gupta, Managing Broker, Prudential Rocky Mountain Realtors

Population: 129,467 History: A late 1800s military outpost-turned-agricultural hub. Today, it’s known primarily as a college town (home to Colorado State University) with microbreweries and bike trails galore, plus plenty of high-tech jobs. Draw: A small, university-town feel, with easy mountain access and bigger-city amenities, plus affordable housing prices. Good for: Working professionals, young families, students and retirees. Realtor’s Forecast: “Fort Collins real estate has always been slow and steady—stronger sales in the spring and summer, cooling a bit in the fall and winter, with modest gains year over year. Fortunately, our recovery has already begun. I fully expect to see this continue, with sustainable growth in both average sales price and volume.” —Sean Dougherty, President Elect of the Fort Collins Board of Realtors

JOHN FABIAN CARLSON (1874-1945), “WINDY HEADLANDS,” 1920, OIL ON CANVAS, IMAGE COURTESY OF DAVID COOK GALLERIES, DENVER

10 things

A MOVEMENT IS BORN—IN FRANCE. Plein-air painting refers to the act of painting (usually landscapes) outdoors. The movement started in the 1830s with a group of naturalist painters whose work inspired not only plein-air painting, but also the Impressionism and Social Realism movements. Famous names include: Jean-BaptisteCamille Corot, Jean-Francois Millet and Théodore Rousseau. WHY IT GAINED POPULARITY. Landscape art has always been popular, but the plein-air movement created art for the middle classes. (Canvases were small and portable, and thus more accessible to aspiring artists than large murals painted back in a studio.) Plus, these landscapes also captured an immediacy of experience, including shifts in light and weather, colors and textures. COLORADO ROOTS. In the early 1900s, when wealthy Easterners came to Colorado for health and healing waters, their cultural tastes accompanied them. “This group of people helped formalize the Colorado Springs Art Society in 1913, which was critical to the formation of the Broadmoor Art Academy in 1919,” says Blake Milteer, museum director and curator of American Art at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. A key part of the original curriculum was landscape painting, including plein air. EAST MEETS WEST. The first Broadmoor Art Academy (BAA) classes in 1920 were taught by renowned East Coast painters Robert Reid (portraiture) and John Carlson (landscapes). Carlson only taught for two summers in Colorado, but his name brought long-lasting prestige to the fledgling school.

you should know about

the Plein-Air Movement and Its Colorado Roots THE COMMON DENOMINATOR. Though artists came from all over the country to study at the BAA, their common artistic challenge was capturing the Colorado landscape—the light, the Rocky Mountains, the atmosphere. A NEW DIRECTOR. Ten years after the first class, the BAA hired renowned New York artist Boardman Robinson as the school’s director. “For more than 10 years, he kept the curriculum anchored in tradition—landscapes and portraiture—even though other art academies were adding modernism to their programs in the 1930s,” Milteer says. But Robinson is remembered for being the leader who oversaw the Academy’s transition into the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 1936. (His tenure lasted until 1947, by which time he had added modernism to the school’s program.) WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN. Since the mid-90s, the plein-air movement has enjoyed renewed popularity with art clubs, says Doug Dawson, one of the founders of the Art Students League of Denver and a popular speaker to art groups all over the country. In the past 15 years, at least half of his speaking gigs have been to plein-air groups. Why the renewed interest in this style? “Like everything else, what happens in art is cyclical,” he says. “Plein air seems to be in vogue right now, which probably coincides with people also loving to be outdoors.” WHAT’S IT WORTH? For artists with Colorado connections, there’s no question John Carlson’s plein-air paintings hold highest value amongst collectors. Carrie Wassemiller, director at historic art gallery David Cook Fine Art, says the top price for Carlson’s work at auction is $80,000. His “Windy Headlands” (painted in Colorado above timberline and pictured here) went for $55,000 in 1999. “The median price for his works is $10,000 to $15,000,” Wassemiller says. WHAT ELEVATES CARLSON’S WORK? “You look at one of his Colorado pieces and you know it’s Colorado,” Wassemiller says. “It’s not some undefined outdoor place. You can tell where he painted it; you know exactly how the air smelled at that moment; you can feel the breeze.” It’s a totally sensuous, uniquely Colorado experience. THE COLORADO PLEIN-AIR MOVEMENT: 2010. Informal groups of plein-air artists abound in the region, but two groups have established a presence: the Plein Air Artists Colorado (PAAC) and Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP). PAAC was started in 1986 by a group of Art Students League painters studying under the tutelage of Jay Moore and Quang Ho. Today, its 270-plus members devote themselves to painting a variety of outdoor scenes, from cityscapes, to gardens, to mountains, to plains, while the members of RMPAP focus on the Rocky Mountains. —Sally Stich
