THE RUG IS A HAND WOVEN EXPRESSION OF LIFE. a textured art form that creates the nexus between function & fashion. From their inception, rugs have been unique in this world. Nothing of such beauty has ever been so utilitarian. Rugs have served as homes for nomadic tribesman to the dÉcor of kings.

we are living in the age of a weaving renaissance. Companies like Zollanvari, Woven Legends, Megerian, Tufenkian, and New Moon are defying the commercial paradigm and putting quality before quantity by producing small collections of exceptionally beautiful rugs with generations of life.

One more reason to love the ’80s... WE’RE FEELING RATHER SENTIMENTAL around our office these days. It’s probably because an anniversary is an excellent impetus for some soul-satisfying reflection. In that spirit, let me remind you of a few of the events that took place in 1980, CH&L’s inaugural year. Reagan was elected, and Chelsea Clinton was born. *Ronald The Empire Strikes Back hit the big screen; Pac-Man busted up ghosts * on the arcade screen. *Ted Turner founded CNN; 3-M introduced Post-It Notes. Madonna had not toured. Prince Charles and Lady Diana hadn’t tied the knot. The Supreme Court had yet to include a female Justice, and your kids didn’t know about MTV or even Cabbage Patch Kids. And 30 years ago, I was...not the editor of this magazine. But with my colleagues, I’m grateful to the people who took turns at the helm these past three decades, and to all of the architecture and design professionals, homeowners and readers who have joined us on this journey. This retrospective issue is a tribute to all of you. We combed through piles of past issues to bring you this lovingly curated collection of photos, design secrets and glimpses of Colorado history. The spaces are beautiful; the advice, practical; the result, I hope, inspiring. Now that I’ve spent so much time dwelling in the past, I’m looking forward to the future. I have a feeling we’ll have plenty to celebrate in Colorado’s design community in the years to come. From all of us at CH&L, here’s to you and yours in this season of celebration—

In our August issue, we failed to note that Englewood-based Diamond Homes (303-789-4451, diamondhomesinc.com) served as the general contractor for our Home of the Year. We also incorrectly identified artist Ron Hicks as the once-art director for Oil & Gas Investor magazine. Hicks was part of a graphic design team. We regret the errors.

What do some of Colorado's favorite design pros and notable residents—plus the staff at CH&L—want to give and get this holiday season? Read on to discover what’s on everyone’s wish list—beautiful artwork, kitchen goodies, irresistible knick knacks and more.

Wrapping up: “I discovered these little morsels of fabulousness from Telluride Truffle when I was visiting this summer. Let’s just say that I’m a bit of an expert, after years of dedicated chocolate-eating, and these truffles are the best I’ve ever had.” “Seventh Heaven,” $25, telluridetruffle.com. Wishing for: “After chocolate, art is one of my favorite splurges. (I’m hoping Santa agrees.) I’m captivated by Karen Swyler’s ceramics. Her forms feel intimate and seductive, but in the most subtle way.” “Nest,” $700, plinthgallery.com. HILARY MASELL OSWALD CH&L, EDITOR IN CHIEF

“These antique Ethiopian German Silver Coptic Crosses are not only beautiful works of art that could be centerpieces in any home, but they also speak to me because of the various cultures they bring together—Greek, African, Egyptian and Roman.” $374.25, wisteria.com. Wishing for: “Even though I’m a professional photographer, my kids won’t cooperate with me anymore: it's the-cobbler’s-kids-have-no-shoes syndrome. So I’d love to receive a black-and-white photo session with Cheryl Jacobs Photography. Cheryl's compositions are so beautifully crafted and her subjects look so natural in her lifestyle settings. Maybe I’ll even get to be in a shot with my family for a change!” Sessions start at $350, cheryljacobsphotography.com. EMILY MINTON REDFIELD PHOTOGRAPHER

BROGAN PLAID WINE GLASS

Wrapping up:

“Artist Jeffrey Woods created these glasses exclusively for the Kirkland Museum. Each is individually hand-etched, painted and signed by Woods. Transferring a Kirkland dot painting onto this glassware was highly successful. Woods’ choice of colors, like Kirkland’s in his paintings, frosted on clear glass gave us stunning pieces.” $16-19, kirklandmuseum.org. Wishing for: “Knoll’s Saarinen tables are marvelous because they come in so many sizes, shapes and materials. Knoll’s consistency of quality over many decades remains very impressive.” $537, knoll.com. HUGH GRANT DIRECTOR, KIRKLAND MUSEUM OF FINE & DECORATIVE ART

Wrapping up: “I came across the work of artist Margeaux last summer as she photographed turn-ofthe-century apothecary bottles and printed them large-scale on glass. Her latest exploration of American waterways captures the movement and reflectivity of water—a conversation piece for any room.” San Antonio III, $5,200-7,000, boxgallerysf.com. Wishing for: “During the winter months, I always seem to have a house full of hungry guests. On an early morning powder day, there is nothing better than a batch of pancakes topped with any of the addicting toppings from Kitchen Collage in Basalt. Anyone who knows me would tell you I never turn down great food.” $6.99-15.99, kitchencollage.com. MIKE ALBERT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, DESIGN WORKSHOP

Wrapping up: “I love Leah Duncan’s vintage-whimsical prints, and I think one or three of them would make the perfect little gift of art for a friend. Each piece is unique, but all of the prints go well together, so you could even curate a little gallery to give.” $20-28, tomtecraft.com. Wishing for: “Some of our interior designer friends in Telluride recently introduced me to all the lovely things by Madeline Weinrib. And wow. Her gorgeous fabric prints make up pillows, chairs and rugs, but I'll take this Saffron Luce Ikat Evening Bag—a fun and unusual application for an ikat.” $450, madelineweinrib.com. Wrapping up: “This amazing and sculptural Jeffersonian Rain Gauge from Birdsall & Co. would not only make a swell design element in any garden, it would help save water in our arid climate by accurately gauging precipitation.” $234.95, birdsallgarden.com. Wishing for: “A lovely tonal patterned Kilim like this one from Shaver-Ramsey would be just right for my dining room. Not only would it pull many elements together in the space, but with the nice, heathered wool yarns, it wouldn’t show those random dropped crumbs as much!” $1,565, shaver-ramsey.com. ELAINE ST. NICOLE JONES CH&L, ADVERTISING ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE

Wrapping up:

Wrapping up: “Scandia Down has taken the conventional bathrobe and gone ultra luxurious with its namesake robe. It’s the same idea as a Snuggie, but not available via infomercial. I can just imagine a friend curled up in a big overstuffed chair with a cup of tea and the newspaper on a cold winter’s morning.” $250, scandiadown.com. Wishing for: “I love artist Shaun Horne’s work...probably because I love Crested Butte so much.” $1,900-5,700, ohbejoyfulgallery.com. HEATHER WELDON CH&L, ADVERTISING ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE

“Who doesn’t want a luxurious blanket to wrap up in on a cold winter night? This cashmere blanket by Loro Piana is something you’d rarely buy for yourself, but it’s always great to have—and a perfect accent for a room.” Starting at $1,700, loropiana.com. Wishing for: “JJim C. Brown’s art is unique and elegant—and a perfect addition to my newly redesigned bedroom. I think the use of plaster to create the varying hues of color in his pieces is fascinating.” $850, jimcbrown.com. JENNIFER WILLIAMS CH&L, PUBLISHER

We began with piles of past issues and a mission: to curate a collection of photos, stories, advice and history that would represent the best in Colorado design. We reminisced about marathon photo shoots, admired designers’ good sense and rediscovered our favorite stories. The result is 23 pages of the most inspiring and compelling spaces we’ve ever featured, paired with insights from some of our most beloved experts. These pages salute the vision and DESIGN IDEA: Our 2010 Home of the Year, this house embodies what is quite possibly the best design advice we’ve ever heard: Buy what you like. Personality, joie de vivre and a little flair are the best design elements anyone can add to a home. Architects: Charlotte Grojean, Wildgrass Architecture; Jeff Van Sambeek, Lodestone Design Group Designer: Andrea Schumacher, O Interior Design Builder: Diamond Homes, Inc. { } TRANSITIONAL DESIGN doesn’t refer to the design evolution that happens when your style grows up from first apartment to fullfledged home. Instead, it’s a genre that captures a blend of traditional and contemporary elements—a modern couch, an Art Deco mirror, an antique Louis XV chair and a cowhide rug, perhaps. What’s the secret to making these disparate elements come together to create one comfortable room? Careful attention to scale, space planning and color. Here, a few of our favorite examples.

58

GET THE LOOK (top left): Give new life to your vintage chairs. Designer Jeff Elliott had these classic T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings slipper chairs lacquered white and upholstered in a taupe basket-weave fabric. The result? Vintage lines, fresh look. Designer: Jeffrey P. Elliott Interior Design Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: January/February 2010

DESIGN IDEA (bottom left): Bookcases are an excellent anchor for a large wall in a bedroom or den. Paint the shelves a different color than the wall color—but take a hint from this room and opt for a hue that’s found elsewhere in the space. Designer: Douglas Associates Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: January/February 2009

LOOKING BACK (above): Designers volunteered to give new life to the historic Porter Mansion when the Junior Symphony Guild chose the home as its 2001 Showhouse. Built in 1912 by businessman and humanitarian Henry Porter—nicknamed Colorado’s “Grand Old Man”—the home comprises 13,000 square feet, including a carriage house. Designer: Deb Kunert Interiors, Urban ID Photographer: J. Curtis Issue: May 2001 59

GET THE LOOK: Playing with basic shapes doesn’t have to be elementary. Here, squares of varying sizes—in the rug, wainscoting and coffered ceiling— add dimension to the room, and circle-inspired chairs, table and lighting soften the look. Architect: Remodel by Jack Rudd Designer: Tami Wakeman, Blanc Canvas Interiors Photographer: J. Curtis Issue: October 2008

DESIGN IDEA: Splurge and save. Here, the designer used less-expensive stock cabinets and gave them a custom paint job with high-quality paint from Farrow & Ball. She splurged on the antique Denver streetlights from Eron Johnson Antiques. Architect: Chris Williams, C.F. Williams Group Builder: Jack Guren, Jackbuilt Designer: Katherine Whitcomb Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: August 2005 60

LOOKING BACK: This 1905 classic Georgian-Revival home housed the French Consulate from 1956 to the mid-1970s. The Junior Symphony Guild adopted it for its 1998 Showhouse, and designers infused the space with classic and contemporary French flair. Magnifique... Designer: Mikhail Dantes, D+D Interiors Photographer: J. Curtis Issue: May/June 1998

Designer: Eddy Doumas, Worth Interiors Photographer: Linda Hanselman Issue: September 2005

GET THE LOOK: “With bold, statement colors like greens and oranges, but traditional pieces, you have to be careful to avoid comical combinations, designer Jane Cotter says. Here, Cotter chose to establish soft green as the dominant color, while letting the upholstery on the backs of the chairs add colorful whimsy. The chairs are balanced beautifully by the soft green upholstery on the chair front and seat. Designer: Jane Cotter, Slifer Designs Photographer: Kimberly Gavin Issue: September/October 2009

WHAT DO WE LOVE most about urban lofts? Exposed brick. Wide-open floor plans. High ceilings and big windows. Or maybe remnants of the building’s (likely industrial) former life, such as exposed duct work, beams or unusual millwork. Inspired by these distinctive details, designers and architects magically convert old, drab shells into stylish spaces that reflect a city’s glamour, vibrancy and life.

]

GET THE LOOK (top left): Want a touch of high-country flair in your otherwise urban space? Try dreaming up new interpretations of Western style, like the well-placed accessories in this loft: an antler chandelier painted slate blue; a silver fox-fur throw and a monochromatic painting of—what else?—a buffalo. Designer: Andrea Schumacher, O Interior Design Photographer: Kimberly Gavin Issue: October 2006

(bottom left): Architect: Joseph Simmons of BlueSky Studio Photographer: Linda Hanselman Issue: October 1996

DESIGN IDEA: Sure, old factories and warehouses are most commonly converted to lofts, but if you want the bones of one of these spaces plus more room, consider a former church building, art studio, barn—the options are plentiful. This chic, contemporary space began its life as a union hall, and then became a synagogue. And now, well, it’s just plain gorgeous. Designer: Mikhail Dantes, D+D Interiors Photographer: Michael Shopenn Issue: August 2009 63

GET THE LOOK: Texture, texture, texture. By keeping the palette neutral (with pops of persimmon), designer Molly Keenan-Ebadi creates luxury with an unabashed mix of materials: tone-on-tone wallpaper beside floor-to-ceiling draperies; a shag rug over cork floors; a fur throw atop a luscious woven duvet, finished with linen pillows. Designer: Molly Keenan-Ebadi Photographer: Ron Ruscio Issue: September 2007

Architect: Designer: Photographer: Issue:

Joe Simmons, BlueSky Studio Mary Ann Hall, Hall Design Associates J. Curtis September/October 1996

In loft-like spaces, creating a cozy and private master bedroom can be a challenge. Try using creative screen materials— like these corrugated acrylic panels set in custom metal door frames; tall, hinged custom art panels; and floor-to-ceiling draperies—to adjust degrees of light and privacy. Designer: Mikhail Dantes, D+D Interiors Photographer: Michael Shopenn Issue: August 2009

LOOKING BACK: This loft in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District, owned by then-director of the Denver Art Museum Lewis Sharp, features a brilliantly curated collection of mid-century modern furnishings and an equally stunning array of contemporary art. Architect: Joseph Simmons, BlueSky Studio Photographer: Linda Hanselman Issue: October 1996 65

GET THE LOOK: For a new (more earthfriendly) take on the classic log home, clad a few walls in your mountain retreat with recycled wood siding. Mix up the palette of expected browns with bright hues—like this energetic orange. Architect: KH Webb Architects Designer: Kyle Webb Builder: Nedbo Construction Photographer: Kimberly Gavin Issue: March 2009

IN RECENT YEARS, ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS reinterpreted the idea of a rustic mountain lodge, with brilliant results. These homes share a few important features with their predecessors: clear craftsmanship, a blend of natural materials and an intimate connection to their surroundings. But their designs embrace new elements with contemporary twists that suit the individual style of each owner.

}

Designer: Tracie Schumacher, Studio80 Photographer: Kimberly Gavin Issue: November/December 2009

“It’s minimal, industrial; [the owner] wanted it clean. And the views out the windows are amazing. It feels like you could just fall out of this bathroom into the woods.” —Tracie Schumacher

DESIGN IDEA: When you mix materials, make sure they refer to one another in some way. Here, the dark walnut coordinates with the swirling knots and grain found in the lighter maple and elm; and the countertop’s celadon granite ties into the soft blue-green backsplash. Architect: Rich Carr, CCY Architects Designer: Lisa Staprans, Staprans Design Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: September/October 2010 66

LOOKING BACK: The architect increased the pitch of this home’s roofline in Telluride’s Mountain Village to make the dwelling feel like a perfect combination of European chalet and Old West vernacular. Architect: Tommy Hein, Tommy Hein Architects Builder: Eric Flora, Epic Construction Photographer: Laurie E. Dickson Issue: February 2006

{

“COTTAGE” IS MORE OF A VIBE than a real design style. There’s something about these homes that feels comfortable but crafted, warm and whimsical. We want to curl up in these spaces with a good book and a hot cup of tea, or invite our friends over for a long, satisfying chat on a bright winter morning.

}

DESIGN IDEA (left): A little whimsy goes a long way. In this kitchen, the scallop-edge wood shelf, teapot collection and black-and-green floor add the right dose of charm to the small space. (Here’s another hint: Laying tiles diagonally makes the space appear larger than it is.) Designer: Sharon Thomas, Builders Kitchen Center Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: August 2004

fun

“Have with design. It’s not a stationary, hold-still process. Designing is performance art.” —Niña Williams

DESIGN IDEA (above): If you want custom furniture (but don’t want to spring for a large piece), consider nightstands. Designer Tracie Schumacher dreamed up these brilliant and beautiful stands; they’re covered in stitched leather, embellished with nailheads and stuffed with baskets for easy storage. Designer: Tracie Schumacher, Studio 80 Photographer: Kimberly Gavin Issue: March 2010

LOOKING BACK: This 100-year-old farmhouse originally sat 17 miles from its current site. When the now-owners found it, they bought it, had it moved down the Roaring Fork Valley—and then renovated it. The home is a tribute to design history: a Dutch gambrel roof, Victorian detailing, Scandinavian furnishings, all executed with classic cottage charm. Architects: Michael Hassig, Olivia Emery, Mark Mahone and Brad Zeigel, A4 Architects Builder: Jacober Brothers Construction Photographer: Gibeon Photography Issue: March 2010 68

GET THE LOOK: Who says you have to hang a single picture above the fireplace? Follow owner and designer Nina Williams’ cue and place a large piece of art or framed mirror on the mantel, then hang a smaller piece to the side. “I love seeing reflected scenes in silvery surfaces,” Williams told us. Designer: Niña Williams Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: September 2006

A PERFECT STORM of political, cultural and technological events in the mid-20th-century gave birth to mid-century modern design. After World War II, Americans were eager for a new chapter in domestic life, and designers responded by ditching ornamentation for streamlined silhouettes and trading heavy woods—with their European connotation—for bent plastics, molded plywood, and wire and aluminum. The era crowned new kings and queens of design, such as Ray and Charles Eames, Florence and Hans Knoll, and Eero Saarinen, all of whom were keenly interested in creating furniture that embraced and supported the human form.

]

(above) Designer: Tony Torres & Carrie Thelander, Tony Torres Interior Design Photographer: Linda Hanselman Issue: May 2002 DESIGN TIP (right): Embrace color. These redlacquered kitchen cabinets are bold and beautiful companions to the apple-green walls and green-and-white Ann Sacks tiles. Not ready for this much jolt? Try painting the insides of your cabinets a different color than the outside. Architect: Den Lindsey, Nest Architectural Design Designer: Kristi Dinner, company kd Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: October 2007

GET THE LOOK (top and above): Don’t be afraid to combine vintage furnishings (mid-century, in this case) with contemporary art. Instead of adhering strictly to a historic style, the living room puts comfort first with a lush mix of materials, including fun, new upholstery for old iconic pieces. Showcasing some of the homeowners’ favorite contemporary artwork, the dining area is of-an-era but also one-of-a-kind. Architect: Remodel of 1930s bungalow by Jack Rudd Designer: Heather Mourer Photographer: J. Curtis Issue: January/February 2009 71

WHEREAS MODERN DESIGN typically refers to that post-World-War-II era of reinvented forms and minimalist thinking, contemporary design is of the moment. (Many think they’re interchangeable, but we hope these collections will illustrate otherwise.) In these contemporary spaces, you’ll encounter some of modernism’s basic ideas—simplicity, clean lines and unique applications of materials—but notice the fluidity, too. Carpe diem, design lovers. You get to define what’s contemporary today.

LOOKING BACK: Hello, custom furniture. The brainchild of architect Jack Snow and the homeowner’s brother, these furniture pieces echo the materials and lines found throughout the Telluride home. The distinctive chairs, made of Douglas fir and leather upholstery, are paired with mahogany tables for a sleek overall look. Architect: Jack Snow, RKD Architects, Inc. Designer: Kameron Gerber, Kameron Gerber Interiors Photographer: Gibeon Photography Issue: August 2008 72

Designer: Angela Otten Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: September/October 2009

GET THE LOOK (above and right): In a space with a neutral palette, opt for bold drapes hung from the highest point on the wall. In this Boulder living room, Kelly Wearstler’s Imperial Trellis fabric for Schumacher & Co. is a dramatic and perfect print to make the room feel complete and luxurious. “I’ve always been fascinated with wenge for its clean lines, and with anegre because it is golden but not too yellow. And teak has a soulful, Zen quality.”

—Alain DeGraeve

DESIGN IDEA (top): Separate spaces in an open floor plan with a silk curtain. Here, natural light floods the dining room, where guests can enjoy a view of the mountains in an intimate space. GET THE LOOK (above): Line it up. To create a subtle sense of cohesiveness in a room, use strong vertical and horizontal lines. Here, the Burmese teak walls, rectangular mirrors and wenge wood floors contrast with the horizontal lines of the leather-covered bench, shelves and limestone sinks. LOOKING BACK (this page and left) : The footprint of this Grand Junction home mirrors the footprint of Pueblo Bonito, one of the largest Great Houses in New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Chaco Canyon was the political and economic center of the region. Architect: Ed Chamberlin Photographer: R. Greg Hursley Issue: May/June 1991

CLASSICS NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE. Like the perfect black dress, these rooms feel timeless with a hint of personal flair. They borrow the best ideas from eras gone by—the symmetry of classical design, or the OldWorld reliance on the finest materials—and then give these ideas new life. They are handsome and stately, refined and reserved.

DESIGN IDEA: Love antiques? They’re not just reserved for the living room or bedroom. In his kitchen, antiques collector Eron Johnson pairs a Czech table with Chinese and English stools and Portuguese shelves. The painted cupboard is a Swedish pantry from the mid-1700s. Designer: Eron Johnson Photographer: Kimberly Gavin Issue: October 2007 76

LOOKING BACK: The historic Grant-Humphreys Mansion got a major update when the Junior Symphony Guild adopted the mansion as its 2000 Showhouse. Original architects Theodore Davis Boal and F.I. Harnois designed this 18,000-square-foot mansion at the turn of the 20th century, when Americans were enamored with Beaux-Arts style. Completed in 1902, the mansion cost $35,000. Architects: Theodore Davis Boal and F.I. Harnois Designer: Pam Kelker, Castles Interiors Photographer: J. Curtis Issue: May/June 2000

GET THE LOOK: Play up contrast. This bathroom marries a masculine feel— thanks in part to the dark wood—with feminine touches, such as the white marble tub and curvy chandeliers. If you choose to paint the walls in your bathroom a dark color, take inspiration from this space and add abundant light sources, like these pretty Old World-inspired sconces. Architect: Carlos Alvarez, Alvarez Morris Architectural Studio Designer: Kristi Dinner, company kd Builder: P.J. Rinker, Lexa Custom Homes Photographer: Emily Minton Redfield Issue: September 2008

LOOKING BACK: This stately Tudor-style mansion was built in 1919 by Fisher and Fisher, the architecture firm behind Denver’s Phipps Mansion and the home of the late Temple Buell. (Don’t miss the interesting arch treatments.) Architect: Fisher and Fisher Designer: Barbara Barron-Bellomo Photographer: J. Curtis Issue: July/August, 1990

faster than textures and materials,” says David Hintgen. So to create a fresh-but-timeless look, mix neutrals in varying textures.

Sculptured House Charles Deaton BY

PERCHED AT THE EDGE OF GENESEE MOUNTAIN, the Sculptured House—arguably Colorado’s most recognizable home—looms large. It’s an icon with a Cinderella story. Architect Charles Deaton was intrigued by the idea of living inside a sculpture—he disliked the proliferation of cookie-cutter homes he saw popping up in the 1950s and early ’60s. “People aren’t angular,” he famously said. “So why should they live in rectangles?” Construction on the only private residence Deaton ever attempted—he typically designed commercial buildings—began in 1963, and by the time the exterior was finished in 1966, Deaton had run out of cash. The home stood vacant for nearly 35 years (during which time Woody Allen filmed part of his 1973 sci-fi comedy Sleeper there). In 1999, venture capitalist John Huggins bought the home and had it finished, complete with a 5,000-square-foot addition Deaton had designed. Huggins worked with Deaton’s daughter Charlee, an interior designer, and her husband, Nicholas Antonopoulos, an architect. Colorado Homes & Lifestyles published the story of the remodel in October 2001. Seven years later, we were there again, this time with designers from AERA Studios to refresh the captivating space. They replaced the jeweltoned furniture with neutral, sophisticated pieces to match the home’s sleek shell. They added sculptural elements, such as the piece of rainforest bark that stands in the living room—a fitting complement to a home designed with few right angles and plenty of curves.

Mountain

High

Our guide to the Steamboat Springs and Grand County real estate markets. BY CHERYL MEYERS

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR LOCAL CHARM, low-key living and plenty of space to play all year long, head to Steamboat Springs, Winter Park and Fraser. Some of Colorado’s best-kept secrets, these towns lack Vail-style glitz—which is just how they like it. If you’re looking to buy in the mountains but want to be just off the beaten path (or the I-70 corridor), don’t overlook these destinations. Here’s why.

GRAND PARK

S T E A M B OAT S P R I N G S EXPERT : Cameron Boyd, broker and co-owner of Prudential Steamboat Realty, (970) 879-8100, steamboatagent.com. HISTORY: The region was founded as a ranching and agricultural community. Later, the natural hot springs attracted tourists. In the 1960s, the skiers arrived. GOOD FOR : Cowboys, ski bums, retirees and young families. THE DRAW: “People see the laid-back atmosphere and how friendly it is, and they start thinking about living up here full time. We’re a small, tightknit community with all the amenities of a decent-sized town—good restaurants, great schools, low crime rate, good arts community and outdoor recreation. As an added bonus, we’re only at 6,800 feet, which means we have really nice, longer summers.” FORECAST: “Our market is going to stay fairly quiet for a year or so until we see consumer confidence and financing pick up. That being said, we’ll see people who want to move up here full-time continue to buy.”

ONE STEAMBOAT PLACE

WHERE ARE THE DEALS? “There are deals to be found everywhere. But particularly in the rural properties—on acreage a half-hour outside of town—which were hit hardest by the market downturn. Overall, we have very motivated sellers.”

GRAND COUNTY E X P E R T : Stuart Huster, broker-owner and managing broker of Coldwell Ba nke r Mountain Prope r ties, (970) 726 -5500, cbwinterpark.com. HISTORY: Ranchers and lumbermen settled in Winter Park and the Fraser Valley in the 1880s, lured by abundant timber and wide meadows. Skiers discovered the area 50 years later, when the Moffat Tunnel made Grand County much easier to access by rail. GOOD FOR : Second-home owners with an interest in skiing, mountain biking and golfing. THE DRAW: “It’s predominately been a second-home community and really appeals to the Front Range buyer due to our proximity to Denver. We’re the mountain-bike capital of Colorado with more than 600 miles of trails; we also have four golf courses, plus the ski resorts. Grand County has more lakes and water than any other area of Colorado, and no I-70 running right through the middle. Winter Park is more affordable than the other mountain towns of Colorado.” REALTOR’S FORECAST : “Just like the rest of the country, we experienced a dramatic slowdown in Sept 2008 (home prices dropped 20-30 percent from 2007), and we were very slow for 14 to 16 months. We’re seeing a steady increase, not dramatic, but certainly more activity—inventory is decreasing, which is the first sign of prices rebounding.” 86

The staff at CH&L poses in celebration of 20 years of magazinemaking.

A Magazine is Born. The premier issue debuted in December/January 1981, featuring a Southwestern-style great room decorated for the holidays. The cover price: $2. Framed! Early covers were framed in white. In those days, the trend was to use a wide lens that captured the whole room (à la current real estate photos), says Elaine St. Louis, art director for 16 years. And photos were taken with all lamps on, lending a horrid orange tint to many pictures. West by Southwest. In the late ’80s, Southwestern style dominated our pages—lots of teals and salmons, pottery and rugs. The trend soon devolved into Southwestern kitsch (think howling coyotes) and then moved to true Western—Indian blankets, vintage cowboy memorabilia, nailed leather and weathered wood. People’s Choice. Our highest newsstand sales ever came when CH&L covered architect Charles Deaton’s famous “Sculptured House” near Genesee in October 2001. Only in Denver. One of the more unusual stories to run in the magazine covered scuba diving. Why that topic? In the 1990s, there were more scuba schools in Denver than anywhere in the country. Read the Ads. In 1989, a 2.5-acre lot in Greenwood Village with a large contemporary house, pool and two-bedroom guest bungalow was on the market for $465,000. Martha Rules. “Martha Stewart wielded a huge influence on shelter magazines. She was really the first to emphasize a natural look in home interior photography,” St. Louis says, “and by the mid-’90s, we were on board with the trend of using a fresh, naturally lit look.” Say What? Each issue inevitably has a back story—sometimes good, sometimes not so. Once, homeowners refused to let the editors publish a “Home of the Year” story two days before press. The owners mistakenly thought the magazine staff had partied in their home after a photo shoot. In fact, the interior designer had staged the home to look festive, and the housekeeper came upon the scene before he had returned the rooms to their normal state. She ratted, the homeowners retaliated, and the CH&L team had two days to pull together another “Home of the Year” spread. An Editor’s Pride. Former editor Anne Parsons’ proudest story covered the Thomas Molesworth house in Aspen in the 1990s. Originally built in the early part of the century, the home had been commissioned by an Easterner who wanted Molesworth to design everything down to the dishes. “It was a beautiful example of Western design,” Parsons says, “a true museum-quality home, which unfortunately later sold to a buyer who recognized the high value of all the Molesworth dishes, curtains, furniture—and split up all the pieces.” Scaling Down. People have often associated CH&L with grand homes, but throughout our history, the magazine has also covered smaller, more user-friendly spaces. The goal: to show beautiful —Sally Stich homes for many different lifestyles.
