Let It Snow

THERE ARE FEW THINGS I love more than a good old-fashioned blizzard. I get as giddy as a thirdgrader when the weather forecast calls for snow measured in feet instead of inches, because even now, so many years removed from school days, I still think there’s nothing better than a snow day. Last year Colorado received a disappointing amount of snow—our ski resorts can attest to that—and I worked from home, a world of white outside, just once. So I’ll be doing a happy little snow dance this year. I hope a few early snow storms, along with the beautiful homes and fun gifts we feature in this issue, will put you in a holiday state of mind. Our annual give-and-get guide (starting on page 17) is chock full of great ideas to inspire your own shopping list. And two of our featured homes (starting on page 40), decked out with charming and unpredictable holiday dÊcor, are bound to have you dusting off those bins of ornaments and garlands. We’ve also tossed in a great party-planning guide—with a few recipes from Colorado foodies— knowing that you’ll soon be hosting holiday soirÊes. If you’re anything like me, you want your home to look and feel its very best this time of year: cozy and welcoming, ready for either grand entertaining or quiet nights in front of the fire. And nestling in for a few snow days, too. Wishing you the happiest (and whitest) of holidays,

wish list In longstanding CH&L tradition, we’ve asked notable folks around town to share the gifts they’re dreaming of this season, and added our favorites to the list—all to inspire your holiday shopping

ELISE WIGGINS, EXECUTIVE CHEF, PANZANO “I have a modern home with lots of windows, and in my dining room a crystal chandelier hangs above the table. When the light sparkles down on the table it’s beautiful—I’d love to have a piece of glass art from Pismo Gallery to place right there.” The Grand Stairway by Baldwin Guggisberg, $11,000. pismoglass.com

DUSTY VOLKEL

“I’d give one of my private cooking classes for 12 people. The guests come into the restaurant beforehand to discuss what they’d like to learn, all depending on what’s in season. I often teach recipes that are on the menu, so they can come back and enjoy them again if they can’t make them at home.” $1,200 for 12. panzano-denver.com

I love the juicy color, asymmetrical split and exaggerated puff of the vintage dress.” Forget Me Not, acrylic, 40 x 46 inches; $800. roxannerossi.com “I’d love to give a friend a punchy, colorful set of vintage bar glasses from Lee Alex Decor. In a season full of parties, nothing makes the toast sweeter than a pretty cocktail glass—and knowing your set isn’t sitting on everyone else’s buffet, too.” $25/set; Lee Alex Decor. leealexdecor.com

MARY ABEL, CH&L EDITOR IN CHIEF “I am a novice yet passionate baker, so when I came across these beautiful cookbooks, they immediately jumped to the top of my list. By chef-owners Liz Prueitt and Chad Robertson of San Francisco’s Tartine Bakery, the recipes in Tartine: The Boxed Set [Chronicle Books] could keep me happily wallowing in butter and sugar for quite some time.” $75; Tattered Cover. tatteredcover.com “Many of my friends are getting into spirits distilled in Colorado, so I’ll be giving a few of these Italian-made decanters. I love the mix of glass and pewter.” $205; Hutch & Fig. hutchandfig.com

ROB DIETRICH, HEAD DISTILLER, STRANAHAN’S COLORADO WHISKEY “I do enjoy a good quality wine, and my vintage of choice is cabernet sauvignon from local winery Balistreri Vineyards. The winery is family-owned, and many of their grapes come from Colorado.” $36. balistrerivineyards.com “I always love to give handmade gifts, and since I take great pride in the whiskey we produce, I like to give it as a Christmas gift. If it’s for someone special, I make rocks glasses from old Stranahan’s bottles and give the whole thing as a set.” $59. stranahans.com

CAROLINE EBERLY CH&L SENIOR EDITOR “It was love at first sight when I saw Deborah Heffley Jones’ energetic contemporary artwork. I’m captivated by her use of color and texture (she uses a trowel, not a brush) and find her pieces thoughtful but not so serious.” Feeling It, 10 by 10 inches, $300; Tweed Interiors Boutique. tweedinteriors.com “I love the way this Gramophone for iPhone resurrects old-timey style to support a modern gadget. I think it’s beautiful and yet humorous too. I mean, who wouldn’t get a kick out of it?” $249; Restoration Hardware. restorationhardware.com

ISAAC SLADE, LEAD SINGER, THE FRAY “A gift certificate to Boulder’s Pizzeria Locale for my wife and me. The owners spent a long time ‘researching’ wine and pizzerias in Italy—it’s a wonder they remembered anything at all. But they absolutely nailed it. It’s the best pizza in Colorado, hands down.” pizzerialocale.com “The Colorado Box has it all: incredible, locally roasted coffee, cheese and meats all cut and packaged right there at Cured [in Boulder]. I’d give the gift if only to lure the recipient back to the shop; it’s like wandering into a local market off an Italian alleyway.” $75; Cured. curedboulder.com COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

savory starters COOKBOOK AUTHOR Eugenia Bone grew up in the company of high-style entertainers: an Italian-American father who hosted potluck dinners with the great chefs of New York, and a gracious mother, a Southern belle. “I was never afraid of throwing parties,” Bone says, who has a love affair with Colorado (and owns a cabin on the Western Slope). Here, the food writer and longtime hostess shares her seasoned strategy for serving party food.

PARTY-PLANNING TIP “I’ve invested in a coat rack that I assemble just for the party, so people’s garments aren’t all piled up on the bed for the cats to sit on. Look for one with a rack on the bottom to hold purses, shopping bags and briefcases—whatever items guests have in tow.” Eugenia Bone, food writer, mycophilia.com

EUGENIA BONE

MUST-READ: AT MESA’S EDGE Find more culinary wisdom in At Mesa’s Edge, Bone’s lively telling of her life as a modern frontierswoman in western Colorado, where she masters rustic cooking with a gourmet twist (150 recipes included) and learns to harvest the land. Now available in paperback.

PE RFECT TI M I NG When it comes to pacing the food at your next party, Eugenia Bone recommends a “by the hour” approach. “I won’t serve a huge amount of one dish,” she says, opting instead to deliver appetizers in waves.

First Wave Bone starts with hors d’oeuvres that can sit out at room temperature for

guests to enjoy while sipping their first cocktail— small bites like cured fish or boiled shrimp with homemade mayonnaise, or a vegetable terrine (ingredients pictured above), a layered vegetable-and-cheese delicacy. “When people arrive and see it on the buffet table, it’s a ‘wow’ dish,” Bone says. Find the recipe online at coloradohomes mag.com/bestpartyever

Second Wave Next, Bone serves appetizers that can be assembled while guests are arriving, like crostini (mushroom duxelle, pear and gorgonzola, caramelized onions with bacon, and olive tapenade are favorite varieties). Make the toppings and toast the bread ahead of time, then solicit guests to help with assembly. “When folks don’t see

somebody they know right away, they want something to do,” Bone says.

Third Wave “Then I serve foods to counteract any heavy drinking,” Bone chuckles. On her menu: Slices of baguette with roast beef, topped with a dollop of horseradish mixed with homemade crème fraîche, or little mini tacos with pork

shoulder (prepared a few days earlier), rolled up that day with guacamole. “At this point, you want to serve small, entrée-like items that are going to saturate.” Don’t want to have to watch the clock? Bone advocates hiring someone to help serve and clean up. “It is the single best piece of advice I can give a host or hostess having a party larger than 6 or 8 people.” COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

I N TH E S PI RIT Keep the libations flowing— and guests happy—with these mixologist-approved tips:

DON RILEY PHOTOGRAPHY

*

Have enough liquor on hand “You can usually make about 15-18 drinks out of a bottle of liquor,” Wilson says, “and I usually account for about two to three drinks per person. Some guests are going to drink more and others less, so it works out.”

*

Stock your bar with basics “I always have an easy red, an easy white, maybe a sparkling wine, and a 12-pack of beer on hand. Serve recognizable wines—like pinot noir, cabernet and chardonnay—not crazy Italian wines that your friends have never heard of.”

*

Let guests do the mixing “My friends really like when I set up a table with different spirits, syrups and fruit, and let them experiment with making their own drinks. It’s a fun way to save yourself some work.”

*

Send guests home with a gift Wilson’s go-to party favors include bottled cocktails or homemade oils and syrups, flavored with cloves, apples and cinnamon, or pumpkin spice. (To make syrup: Start with a simple syrup base—just simmer equal parts water and sugar until dissolved—then add ingredients for flavor and simmer until dissolved. Strain ingredients, let cool and bottle.)

*

Stay cool Be prepared with more ice than you think you’ll need, Wilson says. “If you’re relying solely on your freezer’s ice maker, that’s not going to cut it. I throw four extra bags of ice from the store in my freezer or cooler.”

IF THE SIZE OF THE APRÈS-WORK CROWD at Denver’s hip, speakeasy-style bar Williams & Graham is any indication of the pleasure its cocktails induce, then these wintertime drinks—from bar manager Courtney Wilson—are sure to create a buzz at your next party. Coolweather flavors like allspice, honey and cranberry play a starring role, and easy-to-find ingredients make prep work simple.

Warm up Hot drinks are as festive and cozy as they are easy to make. One of Wilson’s favorites is a twist on a hot toddy: black tea and bourbon mixed with honey and fresh lemon juice. “Hot apple cider also tastes good with a variety of spirits,” she says. “Spike it with bourbon, gin or vodka.”

TRY IT AT WILLIAMS & GRAHAM: The Tokyo Dagger “It’s a play on the classic Manhattan, made with Yamazaki, a Japanese 12year whiskey that adds subtle smoky flavor, and a really rich dessert sherry for sweetness and a hint of fig flavor in place of traditional vermouth. It’s a strong whiskey drink that’s great for the season.” Courtney Wilson, bar manager, williamsandgraham.com

The Tangier Cocktail

“I would serve a single round of this fun cocktail instead of mixing it throughout the evening.”

“Serve this lower-alcohol-content drink as an aperitif—a welcome beverage—or as a dessert drink to top off the evening.”

sweet endings DENVER’S CRAVE Dessert Bar & Lounge serves only those items that seduce the palate—savory morning treats, luscious cocktails, and best of all, a full menu of classic dessert hits with a twist. We asked executive pastry chef Mary Jo Szymanski to put her decadent spin on holiday treats that are sure to send guests home happy. MAKE IT AHEAD OF TIME Dark Chocolate Pot de Crème with Peppermint Chantilly “When you’re prepping for a party, it can be overwhelming to have dessert and savory food in the oven at the same time. You can make this no-bake dessert the day before, then assemble it the day of the party, and substitute any festive flavor for the peppermint.”

Over medium heat, bring the cream, milk, sugar, vanilla and salt to a simmer. Temper in the egg yolks by whisking the cream mixture into the eggs a third at a time, then place back on the heat. Stir mixture with a spatula until it coats the back of a metal spoon and reaches 160 degrees F. Place chocolate in large bowl, then strain cream mixture over chocolate. Let sit for 5 minutes then whisk mixture together. Pour into

small cups (shot glasses, espresso cups or miniature ramekins work well) until 2/3 full and chill in fridge.

Dessert Menu Made Easy Dark Chocolate Pot de Crème with Peppermint Chantilly French macaroons Chocolate peanut butter and hazelnut cupcakes Brownie bites Glazed petit fours Orange madeleine cookies Spiced or chocolate biscotti

Peppermint Chantilly 6 ounces heavy cream 2 ounces powdered sugar 1 teaspoon peppermint extract Whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form, then incorporate the powdered sugar. Add the peppermint extract. Whip until stiff peaks form. To make the cups: Spoon the chantilly to fill cups completely, and scrape the top clean. Dust the tops with cocoa powder. Crush candy canes and sprinkle bits over top in a line or using a stencil. Serve shortly after finishing.

FAVORITE DECORATING TIP “I like to garnish my table of treats with items like candy canes, vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks, all stood up in cups of colored sugar. It creates a really nice presentation for the desserts.” Mary Jo Szymanski, Executive Pastry Chef, Crave Dessert Bar & Lounge, cravedenver.com

Holiday desserts can be too sweet or overly heavy. Serve a mix that tastes just right with these pastry-chef pointers: Keep texture in mind “You don’t want to serve a bunch of creamy desserts and nothing crunchy,” Szymanski says. She recommends varying the weight—or density—of your desserts (i.e., don’t serve all dark chocolate), and pairing citrus with savory flavors. Consider color Desserts can double as decoration. “You want to serve sweets with a good contrast of colors. Include earthy colors as well as bright colors like orange and red.” Flaunt festive flavors Play up foods and flavors that hit the holiday note: brown butter, molasses, nutmeg, pomegranates and oranges are a few of Szymanski’s favorites. Create a focal point Arrange desserts in a variety of sizes—one bigger treat surrounded by a handful of smaller sweets—to let guests know how you intend for them to indulge.

Our Favorite Room

Raise a Glass This sleek and contemporary wine room is too beautiful to be hidden in the basement BY ERIN ENGLISH

PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

EMILY MINTON REDFIELD

WHERE IT BEGAN When the owners of this home asked architects Sarah Brown of Semple Brown Design and Chris Davis (now a principal at BOSS Architecture in Denver) to design a wine room that would house as many as 2,000 bottles of reds and whites, it needed to be more than just functional. The space had to harmonize with the design of the new, contemporary Castle Pines home (read: not the style cues you’d expect for a wine room, which is typically steeped in Old World references). Interior designer Richard Lee, who has a long history of working with the the homeowners on projects in Denver and New York, was enlisted to help envision the space. “The wine room needed to look glamorous,” he says.

PERFECT TOUCHES Nestled in between public and private spaces in the house, the wine room is a sweet surprise rather than a showy display, Brown says. When the six-foot-wide sycamore pocket door is open, passersby catch a glimpse of the backlit wine bottles and unique red leather flooring—and are intrigued. “It’s fun to have those moments when you are discovering and exploring a house as a guest,” Brown says. In the 220-square-foot space, which Lee refers to as “a little jewel box,” the main wine storage cabinet is suspended from the ceiling by cables, creating an airy feel. A hidden compressor keeps the reds perfectly cooled at 55 degrees, and a cuvenee system keeps the whites chilled separately. Proof that the space is more than just a cellar, a wraparound bench welcomes guests to linger for tastings.

STYLE TIPS ■ Creating an attractive wine display hinges upon lighting and materials, Brown

says. Here, lights installed behind frosted glass panels, which accent each of the mahogany shelves, create ambience. “To have a room in a residential property that features lighting like this is unique,” Brown says. ■ To bring a “shot of color” to the room, Lee selected a sumptuous red leather

tile floor by Edelman Leather. Each of the tiles is a slightly different shade of crimson, which brings movement and texture to the floor. ■ The horizontal arrangement of bottles is a look that Lee replicated from a

hotel dining room the client admired. The labels are easy to read and the bottles are showcased in a more beautiful way than with traditional racks, he says.

WHEN D OYLE SVENBY HAULS THE BINS OF CHRISTMAS decorations in from the garage for his wife, Melissa, the week before Thanksgiving, the holiday season officially begins in the Svenby household. Soon the southwestern-styled stucco house—a contemporary, minimalist space the other 10 months of the year—is bedecked, festooned and embellished inside and out, with all manner of holiday finery. “I’m inspired by my mom’s holiday decorating and décor,” Melissa Svenby says. “When I was growing up, our home was magical—you might even say ‘over the top’—during the Christmas season. My mother paid a lot of attention to detail, and I’ve always strived to fill her shoes.” A third-generation native of the small mountain town of Manitou Springs, Melissa loves that she can

see where her grandmothers once lived from the couple’s home. Her husband is a metal artist and sculptor who’s created a number of the home’s fixtures and furnishings. “We’re big on color, and we’re both art junkies,” says Melissa, who manages a home design store in Colorado Springs called Rich Designs. “We like classic, neutral furnishings with pops of color around the room.” 43

(above) A collection of Santa Claus figurines fills every inch of the mantle. Some of the old papier mâché Santas are from the 1940s, and others are new reproductions. (opposite, clockwise from top) Alongside the festive lamp, a year-round fixture, Melissa created a vignette with vintage celluloid reindeer and miniature trees. Some of the Santas in the Svenbys’ collection belonged to Doyle when he was a child and one is from Melissa’s grandmother, though most came from Melissa’s mother, whose over-the-top holiday decorating inspires Melissa to this day. A potted tree trimmed with oldfashioned colored lights leads the way to the entrance of the Svenbys’ home. Doyle, a metal sculptor, crafted the house number and the unique rock wall. doylesvenby.com

44

Page 44

But their minimalist leanings go into hibernation in late November. In addition to decorating two indoor Christmas trees and another outside, the Svenbys put out an impressive assembly of vintage Santas, reindeer, snowmen, miniature trees and ornaments that they’ve accumulated during 23 years of marriage. “When we first started collecting decorations, I don’t think either of us expected that we’d end up with as much as we have,” Melissa says. “We started buying things on eBay, but these days we think it’s more fun to go to antique shops and shows because we enjoy the search so much. My husband is still the best scout.” Standing sentry near the front door, a tall, thin metallic silver tree is “dripping with glass ornaments,” Melissa says. “We positioned the ‘skinny tree’ in front of the window so you can see it when you come up the front walk.” In the living room, a more traditional tree is also loaded with ornaments. “We love real trees, but we switched to an artificial tree because it lasts longer and we like to keep the decorations up until after the first of the year,” Melissa says. The indoor trees are dressed in

white lights, but outside, a potted pine tree is wrapped with colored lights. “At night, from the front of the house, you can see all three of the trees and our lighted Santas glowing through the windows,” Melissa says. Smaller arrangements of decorations appear in unexpected places throughout the home. Jaunty snowmen in top hats adorn a sideboard blanketed in artificial snow, and mercury glass trees bring sparkle to the dining table. Dozens of Santas—including heirlooms from the couple’s families—are amassed on the fireplace mantle. The requisite herd of reindeer, including a red-nosed Rudolph, gathers on a side table. For added color, Melissa wraps presents with pretty paper and special bows, and places them around the home. “When it comes to gifts, I just love the whole package,” she says. The Svenbys have curated a thoughtful and vast assemblage of Christmas decorations over the years. But they’re not quite ready to call the collection complete. “We still enjoy looking, but we don’t buy much these days,” Melissa says. “Well, unless we find something that’s very old. And very special.”

Fresh and Festive Melissa Svenby shares her tips for creating holiday arrangements that shine:

Create thoughtful groupings “I like to make intimate vignettes with our decorations,” Melissa says. “Look around your house and you’ll find plenty of novel places to arrange things, from the center of the dining table to a corner of your bathroom counter.” Mix tall with short “Vary the height of the decorations to add interest. I also like to include a few lighted pieces in our larger arrangements so the decorations can be enjoyed in a new way at night.” Give ornaments a year off from the tree “For a pop of color, I display special ornaments in clear glass containers. This is a good solution for people—like us—who have so many decorations that they don’t all fit on the tree.” Wrap gifts in style “Beautifully wrapped gifts are like decorations, and when the outside of the package is as special as what’s inside, you double the delight of the gift.” Keep a carefree spirit “It’s impossible to keep all of the decorations free of dust, so instead of worrying if a little dust gathers, we just sprinkle some more artificial snow!” Be smart with storage “To protect our collection from moisture and dust, and so we can easily see the contents, we store our ornaments in clear plastic bins on raised shelves in the garage.”

The Lighter Side of

Forget popular notions of Spanish Revival design— heavy brocades, thick tapestries and dark furniture. This Cherry Hills Village home, designed by Mikhail Dantes, owner of D&D Interiors and TOWN furniture showroom, puts a modern spin on the centuries-old style

The entry sets the tone of the house—open, elegant and light. The table, a replica of an antique Portuguese piece, sits atop a hand-painted sisal rug, and a hand-painted silk Fortuny chandelier hangs overhead.

CH&L: What was the genesis of this project?

Mikhail Dantes: The clients called and said they had a floor plan for the great room of a home they were going to build—a 23,000-square-foot Spanish Revival residence—and they wanted a detailed furniture plan showing how I would use the space. They’d shared the request with a few other designers, so it was a competition of sorts. I’d never worked with this style before but I knew they wanted an intimate feel for a room dominated by a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and grand stone columns. I got the job, and when the project was completed two years later, the great room was almost exactly how I’d originally envisioned it. (above) Just past the entry, the great room is anchored by the four-sided, floor-toceiling fireplace. (Each side of the fireplace is etched with the initials of one of the homeowners’ four children.) (left) The dining room, situated on the opposite side of the fireplace, features a modern take on a baronial table. Leather, damask-silk and linen-upholstered Dessin Fournir chairs are a strong complement, rather than a perfect match, to the table. (opposite) An oversized antique mirror pairs with two tall lamps made from Portuguese altar sticks—church artifacts that lend themselves well to the Spanish Revival style. Floral arrangements are by Flower Art in Denver.

The leather chair, an antique from Denver’s Eron Johnson Antiques, plays off of the cleanlined and skirted Rose Tarlow sofa with its nailhead detailing and carved woodwork. “There has to be a balance of detailed legs and skirts so the legs don’t look like a tangle of wood,” interior designer Mikhail Dantes explains. The only oversized pieces in the space are the matching handpainted and lacquered table lamps. “They’d get lost otherwise,” he says.

(left) An oasis of neutrals and metallics, the master bedroom features bronze draperies, neutral walls with a hint of gold, and Fortuny bed pillows with an intricate metallic print. (opposite, top) The walnut-paneled library is home to four comfortable reading chairs covered in Ralph Lauren fabric. With its geometric pattern, the floor is a counterpoint to the coffered ceiling. (opposite, bottom left) Crafted by Peter Eggers of Woden Woods, the white kitchen cabinets are studded with oil-rubbed bronze hardware and topped with brown marble countertops. (opposite, bottom right) The simple iron railing on the curved stairwell is one of Dantes’ signature touches. “This type of home practically begs for an elaborate heavy railing,” he says, “but this one is made of basic black iron. It’s elegant with a touch of modernity.”

Tell us how the grand Spanish Revival architecture influenced your design decisions.

I did not try to create a period house, but rather a design that tastefully reflects the architecture. I had to do my homework. I studied the houses of Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner and looked at books about the vernacular. I shopped in Los Angeles because the style is prevalent there. The great room is very spacious and yet the furnishings don’t seem to get lost. What’s your secret?

When people see a room with high ceilings, they expect oversized furniture to fill the negative space. I did use a few big pieces, but overall I found furniture that comes to eye level, which brings the 52

intimacy down to a human scale. With high ceilings, you also need to fill the space overhead, but without pulling the eye upward unnaturally. The unadorned fireplace and two large but simple iron chandeliers draw the eye up, but with ease. You don’t want the furnishings hanging above you to be distracting. How did you create a palette that is neutral but not ho-hum?

If you’re going to use neutrals, you must make sure that there’s plenty of texture and detail to keep everything from blending together. Here, the entry floor is pitted stone and the wood floor in the great room is distressed and laid in a herringbone pattern. The furniture is covered in silk, linen and leather, and the pieces have wonderful details—each could stand on its own.

(right) The owners used their collection of wine barrels as accent pieces and tables. For Dantes, creating the floor with antique terra cotta tiles in a herringbone pattern “just felt right.”

Even though all good designers cater to the client, each leaves a signature touch behind. What is yours?

Whatever the style is, I frame it with a modern sensibility. In this house I kept the lines of the furniture clean and not clunky. There’s very little clutter and certainly no tapestries or brocades. Every detail is elegant in its own right so the focus is on luxurious fabrics and high-quality pieces—not massive blocks of furniture and heavy wall coverings. The interior design is simply a reflection of the clean architecture.

All the Trimmings An interior designer goes all out for Christmas, enhancing his home with unpredictable decorations that match his décor

BY NANCY RICHMAN MILLIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY

BY

DAVID PATTERSON

IT IS THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING, with warm scents of roasted turkey and pumpkin pie still in the air, and David Grey and his partner Andrew Britton are already turning their attention to Christmas. There’s a reason they don’t waste time: Decorating their Denver home for the holidays takes at least a week—two days outdoors stringing lights and five days embellishing the interiors. Grey’s signature phrase is, “I like pretty things,” though he practices some restraint while weaving holiday elements into his everyday décor. “I have something Christmassy in every room, but I don’t want it to look like a theme house or holiday shop,” the principal interior designer at Britton-Grey Design says. “Sometimes just one poinsettia is enough.”

The Christmas tree, adorned with German hand-blown glass teardrops and white and blue ornaments, fits seamlessly into the living room. “I like to use three different elements and lots of each,” homeowner David Grey says about his approach to decorating the tree.

David Grey’s Top Holiday Decorating Tips

Rather than adopting the traditional redand-green color scheme, Grey matches his Christmas decorations to his décor. “If I have blue and white sofas in the living room, the tree should be the same colors for the sake of connectivity and comfort,” he says. He uses an abundance of natural materials—garland greenery, berries, pinecones, fresh fruit and flowers— along with sparkling white decorations throughout the house. “I love white. It reminds me of snowy winters in New England,” he says. “Christmas is whatever colors exist in nature that make you feel like winter.” The interior style of the couple’s new house is best described as East Coast-meets-mountain. “I grew up in Cape Cod and have a passion for blue and white,” Grey explains, “and Andrew grew up hunting with his dad.” The living room 58

Use two, maybe three, colors or elements at most for a cohesive look.

*

If you find a particular color or style of ornament you like, buy all you can and use it in abundance.

*

Glass is a wonderful decorating element for Christmas. It has a sparkling, transparent quality, and when used on the tree, it reflects other colors.

*

Make sure the weight of your garland is balanced with the size of your fireplace mantel or stair railing (greenery that’s too small can look comical; on the other hand, if it’s too big it can be overpowering).

*

Combine non-traditional items, such as fresh fruit and flowers, with existing decorations.

*

White lights—a little or a lot—create a clean, simple and elegant look.

(opposite, top) Just a hint of sparkling blue in the ornaments brings Christmas to this tabletop vignette. (opposite, bottom) Grey loves to decorate the exterior of his home with white lights. “Some years I get the urge to do more, but decorating even one tree makes an impact, he says.

is a perfect blend of the homeowners’ two styles. Blue and white custom upholstered furniture, striped table skirts, toile pillows and a lattice-work carpet impart a classic, seaside look while the dark wood coffee table, stone fireplace and mounted elk head speak of the mountain aesthetic. “I’m surprised by how well it works together,” Grey says. “Sometimes I have an idea and it flies even better than I thought it would.” The designer skillfully combined the two styles in other areas of the house as well, juxtaposing an airy blue breakfast room with the adjacent kitchen’s dark alder cabinets and rustic slate backsplash. He introduced his favorite shades of blue in almost every room, adding warmth with dark woods and touches of vibrant red and gold. The traditional dining room, painted in “Orangery” by Farrow & Ball, is filled with warm memories of past family holiday gatherings. Grey inherited the Queen Anne dining table and chairs from his grandparents, and he keeps the table set year round with bronzeware that his father bought in Hong Kong while in the Navy and fine china passed down from his parents and grandparents. “Enjoying these things reminds you of family when you live away from them, bringing you closer to home,” he says.

60

(above, left) A grouping of comfortable chairs clustered in the small sitting room promotes conversation, while rich, dark colors and lush textures add to the cozy environment. “The red furnishings speak for themselves,” Grey says. “We only have to add some gold horns, berries and garlands to the room.” (above, right) The kitchen is a well-used room—the homeowners love to cook and entertain frequently—so seasonal decorations are limited to a few amaryllis plants and a bowl of artichokes and apples. Dark alder wood cabinets, granite countertops and a stunning slate backsplash speak to the Colorado mountain aesthetic. (opposite) In the formal dining room, bright golden-orange walls are tempered by subdued blue and brown draperies. “Pomegranates on the table, a berry garland and red roses in a silver pot provide enough references to Christmas here,” Grey says.

Christmas Party Menu One look at this delectable menu makes it easy to understand why invitations to the Grey-Britton annual Christmas party are so coveted.

(opposite) The breakfast room connects to nature and Grey’s native Cape Cod with sky blue walls and a grid of cherry blossom photographs framed in white. A custom antique birdcage light fixture adds to the light and airy ambience, while a dark wood table grounds the room. (above) White flowers remind Grey of winter snow, and pale green roses and pom poms work with the color scheme of the breakfast room. “Just a few silver balls are enough to make you think of Christmas,” he says.

Once the holiday decorating is finished, Grey and Britton begin planning their annual Christmas party, which has grown in reputation and size since they moved to Denver four years ago. “Having the house ready for Christmas makes us want to invite people over,” Grey says. He and Britton spend at least a week doing all the cooking and baking themselves, then hire a sous chef and serving staff for the day of the party. Whether decking the halls or greeting party guests, Grey believes Christmas is all about making an effort to spend more time with family and friends. “It’s an association with the past, an old-fashioned feeling of sentimentality,” he says. “And that sparkle in every room puts a smile on my face.”

In Denver’s recovering housing market, no segment has had more success this year than communities that offer low-maintenance ranch plans its latest ranch release this past spring) is the fact that buyers are loading up their homes – opting for larger sized models and paying premiums for views and walkout basements. On a new tier of sites overlooking the Indian Peaks, minimum prices began in the $300s, but some sales topped $800,000. Meanwhile, as ranch sales nudge the median age upward, builders are seeing the average 55-and-older buyer trending younger, with surprising numbers just over the minimum age Oakwood Homes’ Angela Harris (left), Kristen White and Trishell MacDonald show a fast selling patio-ranch model in their 55-and-older for entry. AT THE 2012 DESIGN BLOGGERS CONFERENCE, held in Los Angeles in February of this year, we asked designers from across the country to send us pictures of their own favorite spaces. After hours of poring over images of stunning rooms, the editors at CH&L and our sister publications each selected a winner. Marvel at the winning spaces here, and mark your calendars for the 2013 Design Bloggers Conference, March 3-5, 2013. design-bloggers-conference.com

Vail Living Room Mountain views inspired the design of this Vail residence, a vacation home for a young family created by interior designer Eddy Doumas of Worth Interiors. “The couple likes both contemporary and traditional styles,” Doumas says, “so my task was to try to combine the two.” That mixing of styles is showcased in the fireplace—a sleek, contemporary limestone mantel surrounded by traditional stacked stone—and in the pairing of a rustic iron chandelier with bold modern art. But perhaps the best example of this marriage of opposites is the juxtaposition of this clean, orderly space with the wild Colorado landscape that surrounds the home. “Designed and ordered atmospheres can evoke an inviting sense of comfortable refinement,” Doumas says.

Indoor/Outdoor Pool Room

Transitional Living Room

Outdoor Living Room

This indoor/outdoor pool is the centerpiece of a Snowmass, Colorado, property. A large operable door frames a dramatic view of the Elk Mountains and, when open, disappears into the ceiling. A luminous “sky” ceiling changes throughout the day, echoing the color of the real sky just outside and giving the room a magical glow.

This home successfully blends the home’s Tudor Revival-style architecture with a fresher, more transitional interior aesthetic. In the living room, contemporary art complements traditional millwork detailing and light fixtures, and tailored furnishings give shape to the space. A fresh, spring-like palette brings energy to the room.

The outdoor living room of designer Cindy Rinfret’s private residence wowed the staff of Kansas City Homes & Gardens. Set amid perfectly manicured gardens and a koi pond, the welcoming space blurs the line between inside and out, protected from the elements and adorned with fine yet durable furnishings. With its fireplace and warm blankets, it beckons in any season.

Farmhouse Kitchen Renovation

This dream bathroom suite was formerly an unused office. To recreate the space, Boston’s Meyer & Meyer, Inc., introduced a gas fireplace, heated Carrara marble floor and period-appropriate whirlpool tub, all pulled together with a soft palette of white and blue-gray for the perfect marriage of comfort and classic New England design.

Anisa Darnell and Julie Holloway of Milk and Honey Home created a kitchen that melds rustic charm with modern amenities. Historic paint colors, wide plank flooring and vintage accessories mimic a century-old farmhouse, while new appliances offer modern functionality.

STEAMBOAT POWDERCATS

[ Recent Renovations NOT A TOWN TO REST on its laurels, Steamboat recently invested more than $20 million into public improvement projects at the base of the ski area. A heated public promenade encircles the base of the ski mountain, creating a flow of wonderful spots to relax, gather, dine and shop, and the unearthing of Burgess Creek, which had formerly been diverted underground, adds a delightful pastoral feel to the whole scene.

For an unforgettable après-ski hour: The Truff le Pig THIS RESTAURANT GETS the recipe just right for fare after a rigorous day on the slopes— crunchy french fries spiced to perfection, succulent pork and creamy fondue. Insider’s tip: Order anything with the word “truffle” or “pig” in it, and you won’t be disappointed. 2250 Apres Ski Way. trufflepigrestaurant.com

FOR A FULL DAY

STAY For one of Colorado’s best dude ranch experiences, hang your hat at The Home Ranch in Clark, which sits just north of Steamboat in the Elk River Valley. The luxurious ranch offers the perfect balance of high-style amenities and downhome hospitality—and with 1,500 acres of aspen groves to traverse on cross-country skis, you won’t feel the need to mingle with the ski crowds. SHOP Lose yourself along Lincoln Avenue on a brisk winter afternoon—and do a little holiday shopping inside one of Steamboat’s many quaint shops: Kali’s Boutique for hip clothing; Overland for cozy sheepskin rugs, shoes and accessories; and Wild Horse Gallery for a range of art and sculpture to love. DO If you’ve conquered all of the ski runs, then head into the backwoods with Steamboat Powdercats, a company that delivers you via snowcat to your desired terrain. Or for a more downbeat activity, check out Howelsen Ice Arena, an Olympic-sized rink that lets you twirl and glide to your heart’s content.

Short on pretense but tall on charm, Steamboat Springs has it all: rugged beauty, great restaurants and plenty to inspire on—and off—the slopes

For a dose of culture: Steamboat Art Museum POP INTO THIS SMALL, elegant (and free) museum while you’re strolling through downtown and enjoy a few quiet moments surrounded by beautiful artworks, photography and worthwhile traveling exhibits. 801 Lincoln Avenue. steamboatartmuseum.org

For a breakfast fit for champions: Steamboat Grand

For the ultimate tête-à-tête: Cafe Diva DELIGHT YOUR INNER foodie at this cozy spot that serves up eclectic combinations. Don’t skip the appetizers—the camembert and wild mushroom crispy roll with tart-cherry chutney and a pistachiosage pesto makes taste buds swoon. Just be sure to get your name on the books ahead of time. 1855 Ski Time Square Drive. cafediva.com

SPEND A SLOW MORNING over a mouthwatering breakfast— and plenty of it—at The Cabin restaurant, which brings a bit of nature indoors by using aspen trees as décor. A few must-taste favorites include concoctions from the egg station, the housemade granola, and the daily chef’s special that features delicacies like pumpkin-and-pecan French toast. 2300 Mt. Werner Circle. steamboatgrand.com

For soothing weary bones:

Old Town Hot Springs NO MATTER THE DAY’S adventures, nothing beats a soak in warm mineral pools that invite total surrender. Choose from one of eight newly remodeled pools, ranging in temperature from 98 to 103 degrees F, at this historic hot springs, once a gathering place for Ute Indians. 136 Lincoln Avenue. steamboathotsprings.org
