Topsail Time The march of time hasn’t moved quite as quickly in Topsail as it has in more metropolitan areas of North Carolina. Here, the tide and prevailing winds have guided the clock, the sun and sand have dictated our schedules and the catch of the day rings the evening dinner bell. Sure, visitors in 2019 will note our new highrise bridge, replacing the historic swingbridge that once carved a path to the island. But while traffic patterns are new, Topsail still offers the same laid back beach vibe that brings vacationers back year after year. Spooning the Eastern North Carolina coast between Cape Lookout and Cape Fear, is 26 miles of sandy beaches just waiting to take your breath away. The world of Topsail (pronounced Top10

www.nccoast.com

sul) could easily be equated to stepping back in time – a time when life was just a little bit simpler, a little bit safer and far less stressful. There are no amusement parks. No multi-million dollar museums or zoos. Instead, you will find miles of beaches and small, friendly, family-run businesses reminiscent of the beach towns of the 1950s and 1960s. Visitors from more metropolitan areas will find it hard to believe that places like Topsail still exist. It’s hard to imagine that a sunbather might find a small, isolated sliver of beach to call their own for a day without another person in sight. But, on Topsail, it’s not only possible, it’s probable. Topsail Island was mostly uninhabited until the 1940s. There was no structured settlement,

Welcome to our Island Getaway only fishing camps and the livestock belonging to mainland farmers who would run their charges across sandbars and shallows at low tide to graze on the thick underbrush. Thanks go to the military for raising awareness of this little slice of heaven. During World War II, the US Army constructed Camp Davis in nearby Holly Ridge and used the remote island for artillery training. When the Army departed a few short years later, the US Navy picked up the torch, taking up residence on Topsail Island for secret Operation Bumblebee missile tests. While it was the Army that constructed the island’s first humble buildings, it was the Navy that gave the island its most prominent structures, many of which remain.

The government was gone by 1948, but it left a few remnants behind, including a pontoon bridge to Surf City, basic roads, artesian wells and electricity. Topsail Island was finally ready for inhabitants. Surf City incorporated in 1949, Topsail Beach in 1963 and the residential community of North Topsail in 1990. Life today is much like it was when the first soldiers set foot on the island, quiet, peaceful and endlessly picturesque. Days are spent outdoors in Topsail, boating, fishing, sunbathing and enjoying a variety of water sports. Even after the sun goes down, you’ll find most visitors out on their porch, listening to the waves crash against the shore with nothing to interrupt their rhythm except the sound of their own voice. THE AZALEA COAST

When deciding what to do with yourself during your island vacation, don’t discount nearby Wilmington for a daytrip. With an array of first-class museums and attractions, this break from lounging by the ocean may be exactly what you need. If you go, make sure you visit the Battleship North Carolina, Bellamy Mansion Museum, Cameron Art Museum, Children’s Museum of Wilmington and Fort Fisher.

KAREN BEASLEY TURTLE HOSPITAL The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center welcomes guests through the summer at 302 Tortuga Lane in Surf City. In addition to tours, visitors can access the gift shop, talk with volunteers, and watch attendants work with the turtles through the windows. Since its opening, the hospital has successfully rescued, rehabilitated and released hundreds of sea turtles, excluding any hatchlings that made their way through over the years. The hospital also runs the Topsail Turtle Project, a group of volunteers that walk the beaches during nesting season identifying turtle nests. To learn more about the facility, visit www.seaturtlehopsital.org. POPLAR GROVE PLANTATION Spend a morn-

ing or afternoon exploring on the oldest surviving peanut plantations in the state. Poplar Grove Plantation was in the Foy family for six generations, from 1795 to 1971. The homestead is preserved to illustrate the life of a successful farming family, along with the outbuildings and crafts typical of a 20

19th century working community. Aside from the Manor House, the plantation covers more than 15 acres that are maintained by the NC Coastal Land Trust. For a full schedule of events, visit poplargrove.org.

MISSILES AND MORE MUSEUM

The Historical Society of Topsail supports the Missiles and More Museum, celebrating the extensive military history of the area. The building, constructed in 1946, was used by the government to assemble missiles for a secret missile operation being conducted on Topsail Island. These citizens began to examine ways to preserve the building and after several years of research, feasibility studies and meetings with state and local representatives, the building was purchased. The Assembly Building became the ideal place to house the Missiles and More Museum. For hours, or additional information, visit missilesandmoremuseum.org.

MOORES CREEK NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD

Moores Creek is the site of the battle that ended British rule in the colony. On Feb. 27, 1776, Loyalists charged across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge, only to be met by nearly 1,000 North Carolina patriots with cannons and muskets poised to fire. Take a trip to Currie to take a walking trail documenting the victory. The park also has a visitor’s center with exhibits and audiovisual programs, a Colonial forest trail and a picnic area. Learn more about the park by visiting nps.gov/mocr.

THE Beach NATURE’S GIFTS: Topsail Island is a great place to add to your shell collection. Take a walk first thing in the morning or during low tide for best results and always make sure there is nothing living in anything you find! Don’t forget to bring a bucket so you have somewhere to stash your treasure!

FIND THE TOWER: Topsail’s relics of military history provide a great learning tool for youngsters and a great game the whole family can play. Can you spot all seven of the remaining towers? It’s tricky, especially with the ones that have been incorporated into homes. Hint: One home can be best viewed from the beach.

ISLAND WHEELS: For a blast from the past, visit the Topsail Island Skating Rink, sure to illicit some feelings of nostalgia. Not much has changed since it opened in 1964. The rink is owned by Doris Jenkins, whose husband built the post office with the upstairs skating rink in 1963. Old wooden floors, a record player with classic tunes and those roller skates from your youth bring back instant memories of days gone by. The rink is located at 714 S. Anderson Blvd., Topsail Beach. For hours and information, call 910-328-2381.

MOVIE MAGIC: Listen to the waves of the Intracoastal Waterway lap the shore at Soundside Park while enjoying a family-oriented movie this summer. The Surf City Parks and Recreation Dept. offers weekly movies mid-June through early August. Bring chairs and blankets to make yourself comfortable and take in some of the most popular new releases.

JET SKI THE DAY AWAY: Rent a personal watercraft and explore Topsail from the water at your own speed. The Belle of Topsail was lost during Hurricane Florence, but the owners pledged a comeback. Grooves on the Shore Ocean City -1951 The ever-growing Ocean City Jazz Festival celebrates a milestone in 2019. The annual festival, which turns 10, celebrates a decade of bringing cool jazz to the historic Ocean City Community Center with an expanded four-day event featuring musicians at the top of their art perform July 4-7. From award-winners to up and comers, festival goers can catch the ocean breeze while taking in the sounds of young saxophonist Jazmin Ghent; two time Grammy award winner John Dillard; singer and songwriter Selina Albright; saxophonist Eric Darius; the always versatile John Brown Quintet; and the local Ocean City All-Stars among others. “Obviously we’re very, very excited about not only the tenth year for the Jazz Festival but for the 70th anniversary of Ocean City,” said Kenneth Chestnut, president of the Ocean City Beach Citizens Council. 30

www.nccoast.com

“We’re excited about how the festival continues to grow and about helping people learn about the history of Ocean City. It’s a part of our history that we don’t want to see fade away. We want to continue to make people aware of it.” Founded in 2009, the festival was conceived by the community’s citizens’ council who sought a summertime family celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of Ocean City. Located 3 miles north of Surf City, the stretch of beach was developed by the efforts of Edgar Yow, a white attorney, and Dr. Samuel Gray, a black physician, both of Wilmington. Yow, who owned the 1-mile stretch of beach on Topsail Island, approached Dr. Gray with the idea of creating an African American beach community where residents could own a beachfront home. Dr. Gray turned to Bertram, Wade, Louise and Robert Chestnut, siblings

who purchased the first tracts of land in what was to become Ocean City. The first homes were built in 1949, followed by a motel, chapel and camp dormitory. Ocean City became the first North Carolina coastal community in which African Americans could purchase land, 15 years before the Civil Rights Act. To celebrate the rich history of Ocean City, the council approached the community about holding a jazz festival, and the idea was welcomed with overwhelming positivity. The festival had humble beginnings on the porch of the community building with adjacent tent and chairs. Within a few years, the tent size increased and two years ago the festival had to be moved across the street to handle the growing crowd that gathered for the celebration. “It has expanded and evolved over the years,” said Chestnut. “But the community mission is still there. The enthusiasm is still there. We still use the festival as an opportunity to educate people about Ocean City and in addition it helps provide funds for the chapel and community center.” Despite its growth, Chestnut said it continues to be a small, intimate venue. It’s not uncommon to see performers mingling with the crowd and hanging out

Eric Darius

under the tent to take in the sets of fellow musicians. “We have been fortunate to draw some really excellent artists and performers through the years and this year is no different,” he added. The Ocean City Jazz Festival continues to be a one of a kind event for Topsail Island and as it grows, it adds new events to draw even more music lovers to the shores. The 10th anniversary edition begins on Thursday, July 4 with a wine and beer tasting and a Kickoff AllWhite Party featuring the smooth sounds of John Dillard from 7:30-9:30pm. Things really get going Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 5-7, with music beginning at 5pm each day. In addition to the four nights of jazz, folks can enjoy worship service under the tent and the festival’s first Jazz Gospel Brunch on Sunday, featuring Richard Dawson, Cyrus Chestnut and John Brown. One-day admission is $60 for Friday and Saturday and $50 for Sunday. Two-day tickets are $110 and three-day tickets are available for $160. All can be purchased at oceancityjazzfest.com. The event includes food trucks and a merchandise market that features a variety of food, beverages and souvenirs. No picnic baskets or coolers are allowed.

The Towers of Topsail Retracing Topsail’s Military History

Rarely do the towers go unnoticed by visitors – standing along the coastline like sentinels of an era long forgotten. Despite the battle scars from the elements endured, the towers remain strong and sturdy. They’re conversation starter for history buffs and puzzling clues to first time visitors. Even among longtime residents, stories abound about the purpose of the towers swirl, from World War II submarine spotting posts to whale watching outposts. No, they weren’t built by the electric company, but they were, for many years, shrouded in mystery, opening the door for the imagination to run amuck. Today, however, the full story is out in the open - all it takes is a visit to the Missiles & More Museum in Topsail. The island was completely separated from the mainland until the 1940s, reachable only by those few locals who knew how to hop, skip and jump their way across the marsh during low tide. A barren, 26-mile stretch of sand and maritime forest – its remoteness makes it easy to assume that there is little history on Topsail Island. But, nothing could be farther from the truth – and its coastal watch towers are a vital reminder of the important role the site has played. It was the US Army that first came to this stretch of coastline. In less than six months during World War II, the government constructed Camp Davis on the mainland at Holly Ridge, bringing the rural community with a population of less than 50 to a max of about 70,000 in a few short years. Troops could conduct artillery 34

training under the shroud of safety provided by the island. But the Army’s presence was short lived. By the end of the war, much of the base was dismantled and the troops were transferred. The island’s potential was noted by the government, however, and it didn’t take long until the US Navy had the ideal use for the site. On the sandy shores of what the Navy referred to as the “sand spit,” troops crafted and tested some 200 missiles from 1946 to 1948. In March of 1947, with the issuance of a press release, the Navy finally announced what it was doing on the island, although it failed to mention that the tests had been ongoing for months. “Eight observation stations, located along the sand spit for tracking of units in flight will house radar and photographic equipment for recording of performance data,” the release read. Operation Bumblebee included the development and testing of the Navy’s first supersonic guided missile and the ramjet engine, the basis for today’s jet aircraft and warheads, including the Terrier, Tartar and Talos missile systems in use aboard Navy vessels. Ranging in length from 3 to 13 feet, the missiles were constructed and tested along the otherwise peaceful 26-mile stretch of beach, according to Wilmington author David A. Stallman in “Echoes of Topsail,” now in its third printing. “The missile site was principally made up of an Assembly Building, control tower, launching platform, bombproof room and eight photographic towers,”

wrote Stallman, noting that most are still intact today in the Town of Topsail. The Assembly Building, now maintained by the Historical Society of Topsail, is home to the Missiles and More Museum and a plethora of artifacts and images from the missile tests. The control tower, a shorter version of the photographic towers, sits in a direct line between the Assembly Building and the launch pad. While it previously had an observation deck, the tower’s roofline has been altered through the years. The launch pad now serves as the patio for the Jolly Roger Motel and the bombproof observation room is now part of the motel’s basement. The towers, according to Stallman, were located in a precise scientific fashion to allow for the gathering of data and photographing missile tests. They were rigidly constructed to avoid any shifting or vibration within the structure and manned with photographic equipment that could record the flights over 10-20 miles at speeds of up to 1,500 mph. The towers were centered on “concrete slabs supported on creosoted piles driven to a minimum depth of 20 feet and 15 tons of bearing.” Seven of the original eight structures remain, although a few have been merged into beachfront homes and are hard to recognize. That doesn’t mean visitors don’t have the

opportunity to visit them – Towers 4 and 5 are short-term rentals offered through Ward Realty, allowing guests the opportunity to spend the night in a piece of history. Tower 8, which was located at the northern edge of the island, was destroyed in 1989 after becoming an eyesore and a gathering spot for vandals and trouble makers. At least three deaths occurred on the site from falls from the top floor and the owner opted to demolish the structure when he realized it was impossible to keep trespassers off the property. Now protected by the Historical Society of Topsail, the Missiles and More Museum is on the National Register of Historic Places, as is Tower 2, which is noted as being the most original of the remaining icons. Tower 2, which once stood alone along the sound side of the island, now dons a coat of fresh blue paint and has become a centerpiece in a new development community. To learn more of the story, the museum is open from 2-5pm, Monday through Saturday, May through September, with reduced off-season hours. Admission is free. For additional details, call 910-328-8663 or visit missilesandmoremuseum.org. Of course, grabbing a map and taking a jaunt around the island trying to find these towers can provide a unique and historic adventure for visitors of any age. TOPSAIL COASTER

ISLAND FISHING Topsail offers several options when it comes to dropping a line. From piers and surfside to trolling on a charter boat, few things are better than casting a line on Topsail Island’s beautiful coastline. Anglers rave about the spring sea mullet and the Spanish mackerel, drum, flounder, cobia and spots as the water begins to warm. Pier fishing was born with the construction of the Surf City Ocean Pier in 1948, now an icon in the community. The love of the sport quickly caught on, leading to the construction of two additional ocean piers and more recently, the soundside pier in Surf City. Fishermen who prefer a little solitude and peace, can easily find their place in the sand for a little surf fishing, by far, one of the most relaxing ways to participate. It’s not uncommon to find an angler resting back in a beach chair, his rod tucked into the sand by his feet as he patiently waits for a nibble. The payoff for surf fishing isn’t bad either, with catches often including flounder, trout, black drum, spot and pompano. Those feeling a little more adventurous have their choice of more than 25 charter boat captains in the immediate area, with fishing trips that range from inshore jaunts that are calm enough for the kids to high seas adventures in the Gulf Stream. Most captains can cater a trip to your needs, however, how good of a day you have is always up to the fish. But you know what they say – the worst day fishing is still better than the best day working. Visit www. topsailcharterfishing.com for a list of charters available in the area.

RULES & REGULATIONS

While fishing on any of Topsail’s three ocean fishing piers, anglers are not required to purchase a NC Fishing License. The piers carry blanket licenses to cover all fishing on the premises. A license is required, however, for the Surf City Soundside Pier. All other fishermen over age 16 must purchase a permit from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Those interested can pay with a credit card online at ncwildlife.org, call 1-888-248-6834 or view a list of locations by visiting www.ncwildlife.org.

Golfing the Greater Topsail Area Visitors looking to trade their flip flops and fishing poles for a chance to practice their golf swing while on vacation certainly have no shortage of options when it comes to the Treasure Coast. With lush landscapes and picturesque water views around every bend, the backdrop couldn’t be more relaxing. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, well-equipped pro shops and are open to the public at great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a resident and a golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations. From professional instruction and putting greens to pools and on-site dining options, the variety of country clubs and golf courses in the Topsail area have lots to offer, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned golfer.

Highlights NC BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL Nothing could be sweeter than the NC Blueberry Festival, planned for Friday and Saturday, June 14-15, which pays homage to the area’s rich history of blueberry cultivation. Combining blueberries and tourism the NC Blueberry Festival Association aims to raise awareness of both the annual crop and the scenic backdrop in which it grows. About 30,000 people attend the festival each year – that’s no small feat for Burgaw, where the population hovers right around 4,000 residents. Visitors will enjoy two days of live music, a barbecue cook-off, recipe contests, a car show, a 5K run, a street fair and of course, lots of blueberries. Schedule performers include The Entertainers, Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot, Steve Owens & Summertime and the Band of Oz. Learn more about the festival at www.ncblueberyfestival.com. SPOT ON!

Hit the streets of Hampstead for to celebrate the town’s most abundant catch, the spot fish. Hampstead is host to the NC Spot Festival each year offering a two-day event filled with fun, food and entertainment. This year, the annual event will be held Nov. 2-3, and organizers have lots to celebrate. The 2018 event was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence – giving the folks in Hampstead even more reasons to go big in 2019. Guests are treated to a true Southern fried spot dinner featuring two spot, fries, coleslaw, hushpuppies and sweet tea, served from 11am to 6pm on Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sunday. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to relax and enjoy live entertainment followed by fireworks at 9pm on Saturday. For additional details, visit www.ncspotfestival.com.

SEAFOOD CELEBRATION Sneads Ferry, a quaint seafood village, is most famous for its main catch, shrimp, and each year it brings in more than 385 tons of this popular crustacean. Each year, in an effort to celebrate and honor local fishermen and the seafood industry, the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival attracts shrimp and seafood lovers from all over North Carolina and beyond. The three-day affair, Aug. 9-11, brings lots of opportunities to indulge in the popular catch. Guests can expect live entertainment, crowning of festival queens, a petting zoo, a street dance, cooking demonstrations, 42

a shrimp heading contest, craft vendors, carnival rides and tons of additional opportunities to enjoy the bountiful harvest that put this area on the map. Festival runs from 5-11pm on Friday, 10am-10:30pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday. Insider tip – hang around on Saturday for a spectacular fireworks show. For information, visit www.sneadsferryshrimpfestival.org.

HARVEST CELEBRATION This fall, sip and nib-

ble yourself through the annual NC Musadine Festival and celebrate the harvest of the state’s largest grape crop. Find two days of live music, an eclectic group of arts and crafts vendors, a variety of food options and sample more than 250 wines. Scheduled for Sept. 27-28, the event is held at the Duplin County Events Center, 195 Fairgrounds Drive, Kenansville. The festival runs from 5 to 9pm on Friday and 10am-7pm on Saturday. Tail-gaiting has become a popular part of the annual festival with a decorating contest that brings out everybody’s creativity – and sense of humor. Other events include a cooking contest, wine-making competition along with shag dancing and photography contests. Insider tip – if you want to buy some wine or art but don’t want to lug it around with you for the rest of the day, no fear … the festival vendors will package your wine and have it waiting for you at the pick-up tent near the exit.

NEW YEAR’S DIP

Each New Year’s Day, the Dolphin Dip Foundation brings people together for a fun opportunity to take the challenge and hit the cool ocean waters for a refreshing way to embrace a new start. The water is chilly, but it doesn’t seem to stop crowds in Surf City from taking a brave immersion in the frigid ocean waters of the Atlantic during the annual Dolphin Dip. The annual Dip begins around 11am on Jan. 1 at the Roland Avenue Beach Access in Surf City. The swim begins at noon. Over 7,000 people attended in 2017. Participants are invited to wear creative costumes and the event includes an award ceremony rewarding those for being the best dressed. Insider tip – even if you’re not brave enough to take a dip in the frigid water, this is a great event to watch. Bundle up and hit the beach for a great opportunity to see Topsail’s community spirit.
