Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come to the

National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

AT THE AQUARIUM Summer is for the birds at the aquarium. A Bird’s-Eye View opens for its tenth season with an all new show. Wise up about owls and other native raptors and water birds. The daily free-flight bird show offers a close look at some impressive birds. Held in Big Rock Theater, the show highlights the unique features of various owls, hawks, pelicans, vultures and other species that can be found across North Carolina. All the birds in the show have injuries or conditions that prevent their release into the wild. A Bird’s-Eye View is offered daily at 11am and 2pm. Upcoming events include: • Free fun filled activities emphasize small things anyone can do to enhance ocean health during World Oceans Weekend, June 8-9. • Shark Week July 13-19 reveals the mysterious and often misunderstood world of sharks, the top predators of the seas. • The Sea Turtle Celebration Aug. 10 features some of the ocean’s most beloved creatures. A highlight is a birthday salute to Nimbus, the rare white sea turtle, who turns 10 in August. The event also outlines many ways beachgoers can help sea turtle hatchlings make it from their nests in the

sand to the sea. • Stand-up paddle boarding, kayak excursions or other outdoor adventures are offered daily in the summer for additional fees. Kayak and canoe excursions, marsh explorations, evening turtle treks, clamming and crabbing expeditions, and other outdoor adventures also are available weekly in the summer. The activity fees cover any supplies and equipment needed. • Kids Night Out offers parents the opportunity to hit the town after hours while providing kids a special night out at the aquarium. Dinner, crafts, programs and activities included. Extend your aquarium visit with a variety of specialized behind-the-scenes tours with special viewing for sharks, otters, sea turtles and more. See the website for the full schedule and be sure to sign up ahead of time. Programs fill quickly so advance registration is recommended for all feebased programs. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is 5 miles west of Atlantic Beach at 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512. The aquarium is open 9am-5pm daily. Fishing the Rock

For more than 60 years, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has drawn droves of spectators and media to the Morehead City waterfront to get a glimpse of one of a majestic blue marlin. Running June 7-15, the tournament offers bragging rights – and a hefty prize purse – for the boat that brings in the largest specimen. And the excitement unfolds on the Morehead City docks each evening during weigh-ins. With big money on the line, the anticipation is almost palpable, even for spectators who line the sides of the dock to watch as officials lug the fish to the scales. Last year’s winner, Honey Hush, captained by Chuck Linder of Morehead City, took home over $750,000 with a first prize 518.5 pound blue marlin. That’s a long way from the 250 silver dollars awarded during the first tournament. Prior to 1957, the blue marlin was an elusive catch that most believed could only be caught in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. One had never been caught in the waters off Morehead City, though sailors often told stories of the blue marlin seen not too far offshore. Most were convinced these stories were just tall tales, but Morehead City’s Fabulous Fishermen Club decided to see if the stories were true. The original members of the club were able to convince local business leaders to put a small cash prize together for the person to catch the first 14 www.nccoast.com

blue marlin. While boats began to venture further out, the first blue marlin wasn’t caught until Sept. 14, 1957. The angler was welcomed at the dock by an impromptu parade and a children’s red wagon filled with the prize money. While winners are lauded by the tournament for their catch, are nonprofits also get a piece of the pie. Last year, the tournament donated more than $450,000 to worthy causes. During its 61 years, the tournament has given back more than $5 million to the community, making everyone a winner. This year’s tournament is scheduled for June 7-15, drawing anglers from up and down the coast. Blue marlin are brought to the scales as soon as they are caught, while game fish weigh-ins occur Monday through Friday from 4-7pm and on Saturday from 3-6pm. The tournament kicks off with the Lady Angler Event from 6-9pm on Friday, June 7 at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. The Big Rock Lady Angler Tournament runs from 8am-2pm on Saturday, June 8, followed by the Captain’s Party at the Civic Center from 7-11pm. The main event begins Monday, June 10 and runs through the week. Tickets for the captain’s party can be purchased at tournament headquarters or at the door. Can’t make it downtown to see the big ones make it to the dock? Keep tabs on all the action with the tournament’s live feed at thebigrock.com.

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore.

SUMMERTIME JAMS: Morehead City Parks and Recreation Dept. holds a free concert each Saturday night, May through August, at Jaycee Park on the M o r e head City waterfront. Concerts run from 7-8:30pm. Music runs the gamut – from country to rock to classical. Bring chairs or blanket to make it more comfortable, or anchor nearby in the boat to enjoy the sounds.

ACTING UP!: The show must go on – and that has never been more obvious than with our determined Crystal Coast Community Theatre. Booted out of their home by Hurricane Florence, these thespians continue to raise the roof; albeit the West Carteret High School roof. Catch “Oklahoma” this summer and help them rebuild their permanent digs. Performances run July 19-21 and July 25-26. Call 252-7261501 for more info.

ART BY THE SEA IN SWANSBORO: Art and live entertainment come together on Saturday, June 10, at Swansboro Arts by the Sea on the historic downtown waterfront. Artisans will line the streets with pottery, jewelry, paintings, stained glass, fiber, carvings, photography, sculpture, metal work and more during this juried show. Due to the large volume of pedestrian traffic, guests are asked to leave their pets, bicycles and skateboards at home. For more information, visit www.swansborofestivals.com.

Old Homes Tour & More The homes and gardens of the historic seaside village of Beaufort will be opening doors for the 59th annual Old Homes & Gardens Tour on June 28-29. The annual tour, a fundraiser for the Beaufort Historical Association, features 13 of Beaufort’s beautiful private homes, 10 glorious gardens and multiple local churches and artists’ studios throughout the town. “This year, especially after Hurricane Florence, those who live here are passionate about welcoming back our visitors,” noted Patricia Suggs, executive director of the BHA. “Even though we’ve suffered so much damage and so many of us aren’t even back in our homes, we are very resilient. Our visitors are what help us realize what a special place it is that we get to call home, and we’re proud to open our doors and share with them.” Tickets for the Old Homes Tour are $20 and are on sale now at the Beaufort Historic Site as well as online at www.beaufothistoricsite. org. From small cottages to beautiful waterfront homes and quaint gardens, this year’s tour will also feature many new accompanying events, including a musical concert, the annual Kick Off party, a Literary Luncheon at the Coral Bay Club and a closing Jazz Brunch featuring a New Orleans interior designer. These events were added to compliment the tour and to offer guest more events to enjoy while visiting the town of Beaufort for the Old Homes Tour. Last year was the first try at the new events according to Suggs. “The events last year were extremely popular and all were sold out well in advance,” she said. “Visitors loved the emphasis on history, literature and Southern design, which we are bringing back again this year with our renowned speakers. Part 24

www.nccoast.com

of the fun of bringing in guests of this caliber is not only seeing how much attendees loved them, but also how much they love the small town of Beaufort and the surrounding area.” Starting off the events for the Old Homes Tour is the annual Kickoff Party on Saturday, June 8 featuring great food, art by featured artist Jim Carson and the fourth annual Bartenders Challenge. Join the Beaufort Historical Association in thanking the homeowners and sponsors at this social event, tickets are $35. The Literary Luncheon at the Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach, held on Wednesday, June 27, will feature New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan Henry, the author of 15 novels. Her latest Southern fiction novel, “The Favorite Daughter,” is coming out June 4, just a few weeks before the luncheon. Tickets are $40 and are limited, so be sure to reserve early! A free evening choir concert at Purvis Chapel will takes place at 7pm on Thursday, June 27 paying tribute to Old Homes Tour Honorary Chairs Joyce and Fred McCune. Wrapping up the Old Homes Tour events will be a closing Jazz Brunch at 11am on Sunday, June 30 at the private home of Deborah and Charles Llewellyn. Tickets for this special brunch are $85 and feature a presentation by New Orleans interior designer Robert LeLeux with his latest book, “Southern Style Now,” along with catering provided by Scarborough Fare. Recently voted the best small town in the South by “Southern Living Magazine,” visitors will see firsthand why Beaufort is the small seaport town with the big Southern heart. Tickets for the Old Homes Tour and accompanying events can be purchased at the Beaufort Historic Site, 130 Turner St., by calling 252-728-5225 or visiting www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

Fishing the Coast The warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide the Crystal Coast with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. The area is home to one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world for blue marlin; other fish caught along the Crystal Coast include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo depending on seasons. Many species, including drum and flounder, are caught surf fishing. Saltwater and freshwater anglers age 16 and older must have a valid, state-issued recreational fishing license to take fish in North Carolina throughout the year. Specific regulations and restrictions apply including size and daily limits. North Carolina offers a variety of fishing licenses from temporary to lifetime. Licenses for recreational fishing can be purchased online at www.ncwildlife.org, by visiting the Div. of Marine Fisheries in Morehead City or through area fishing supply stores.

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Is-

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. Summertime Kids

10 Ways to Keep Learning Alive Summertime in America means baseball, barbecues, amusement park rides, bubbles and fireflies. The summer months or the “offseason,” for students also present a classic case of the Summer Slide, a well-documented phenomenon where kids can lose up to three months of progress in reading and math skills learned during the previous school year. These losses add up, particularly for low income students, and can leave vulnerable students treading water or falling behind their higher income peers. The good news is there are many free and fun ways all parents can help prevent the Summer Slide, without missing all of the joys of summertime. “Coaches don’t tell their players to quit training during the off-season. The off-season presents a special opportunity for athletes to develop strength, skills, and stamina in training programs that may differ from their workouts during the regular season,” said Matthew Boulay PhD, founder and CEO of the National Summer Learning Association. “In the same way, our goals and plans for summer learning for our children can be different than what happens during the school year.” NSLA worked with Learning Heroes – a nonprofit that equips parents with information and tools to help their child succeed academically and developmentally – to create a Top 10 list of things parents can do to make learning fun during the summer, and to ensure their kids start the new school year strong. 1. Make a simple plan. Look at your child’s grades, pay attention to how easy or hard it is for them to do grade-level activities, and look out for the state test results you’ve received from school. Go to www.bealearninghero.org for a simple 3-step plan to help set your child up for success in the new school year. 2. Promote real-world skills. Encourage lifeskills that help your child in and out of the classroom. Show your child how to problem-solve, learn from mistakes, and how to communicate effectively with others, especially in tough situations. 3. Let them show what they know! Summer is about having fun and exploring your child’s interests. As your child reads, plays an educational app, or during everyday moments at home, ask them to teach what they’ve learned and what they enjoyed or didn’t. 4. Find the fun in your community. There are 38 www.nccoast.com

places and spaces to learn all around you. Check out recreation and parks or library programs that have academic support and activities for children. Visit a zoo or museum to explore new interests. Plan a day trip – find a nearby park or historic place you’ve never been to and talk about what you want to learn during your visit. 5. Read every day. Whether doing it at home, at a library, or even while visiting a beach or park, reading can be a joyful escape. Many schools use Lexile levels to measure your child’s reading ability. Parents can help children pick books that interest them and are suited to their Lexile reading level. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free, online reading program. Visit www.scholastic.com/summer/home. 6. Have fun with numbers and science: Add a little math to summer reading fun. Asking your child to help tally a grocery bill, follow a cupcake recipe, or calculate how much time it will take to get to the beach are creative ways to practice math skills. 7. Make art … and music: Whether it’s painting a picture, composing a song or constructing musical instruments out of cardboard, let the summer months be the time when your child discovers a joy of creative expression. 8. Get Moving and Eat Healthy! Many children experience unhealthy levels of weight gain during the summer months because they get less exercise when schools are closed. So kids need to take a hike, learn to swim, play in the sun, and go for a bike ride, run or walk. 9. Manage Screen Time: Experts generally say that it’s OK for children to use screen time in a limited way as long as they are supervised. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the quality of content is more important than the platform or time spent with media. 10. Finally … keep good habits! Keep a bedtime routine. It’s ok for your child to stay up a bit later in the summer but it’s still very important to maintain a regular bedtime and routine. For example, if you read a bedtime story to your child during the school year, then read a bedtime story during the summer. And remember most children need a good eight hours of sleep a night. For more information on these and other summer learning ideas, visit summerlearning.org and bealearninghero.org.

History Museum of Carteret County Carteret County Historical Society

S

tories. The saved ones are called history. The ones yet to come we call an adventure! At this county’s History Museum we offer both. The museum’s present exhibit “Arnold’s Aces: The Rise of the East Carteret High School Marching Mariners, 1967-1996”, lets you experience an amazing story of the Mariners’ rise to national prominence. For budding military historians, our Warriors of Carteret County was modified for the World War I centennial. A new case (and book) now features our county’s most decorated veterans from that war. Other smaller exhibits on the Civil War and the county’s African American churches are also on display. Genealogists and historians wishing to discover their own story can access our Goodwin Research Center which is a gold mine of information. There, you will also find book sale – and then you can read others’ stories! Local authors’ work and artisan-crafted items highlight coastal North Carolina material in our museum store, including hard to find self-published volumes and the masterful works of Jack Dudley. Making history is easy, all we need is you, so plan to hold your next meeting or event in our building. Right sized and right priced for groups up to 180 people, we’re just 15 minutes from the beach. Contact us for available dates and rates. For a more food-oriented experience, try our Infusion Cafe. The staff ’s theatrical/musical events feature singing, exotic coffees, teas, soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch or an early dinner. Look for them on Facebook. Museum admission $1 for children (ages 5 – 17) $3 for adults (ages 18+) Society members are free.

Summertime Kids

Buddy Tournament Set for July 27-28 One of Bogue Banks most beloved events returns to the Oceana Pier in Atlantic Beach this summer. The Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic takes over the seashore July 27-28, luring amateurs and professionals alike for a little friendly competition in a variety of categories. Annually, competitors range in age from 8 to 55 and over. The surfing competition isn’t just for surfers, though. Entry fees, T-shirt sales and other donations help fund three college scholarships to members of the East Coast surfing community. For many, this mid-summer contest has become a tradition, not only for the prime chance to catch a few waves, but also to pay homage to the competition’s namesake, Buddy Pelletier. A topranked professional surfer and three-time winner of the Puerto Rican National Longboard Championship, Pelletier came home to the Crystal Coast in the early 1990s to spend his final days with friends and family before succumbing to cancer. It is through those same friends and family mem-

bers, as well as new ones made along the way, that his legacy lives on through the nonprofit Buddy Pelletier Surfing Scholarship Foundation, which provides humanitarian aid and scholarships to the surfing community. Longboards, unlike their shorter counterparts, allow competitors to ride even the smallest of waves, leaving onlookers with plenty of action to take in and giving entrants the opportunity to showcase their skill. While adult boards measure about nine feet, junior boards must be three feet longer than the youngster’s height. Surfing begins each day at 7am and generally lasts until 5pm on Saturday. A beach party with live music is planned for Saturday evening at 7pm. The awards ceremony takes place Sunday afternoon. The entry form and additional information about the contest, sponsorship opportunities and the foundation can be found at www.buddypelletier.com.
