summer camp Age Restrictions & Parental Responsibility

Camps are designed by the grade your child completed for the 2013-14 school year. Children enrolling in K4 camps must be the appropriate age and toilet trained on the first day of camp. If there are questions regarding a child’s age, the Recreation Department may ask to see a copy of the child’s birth certificate. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or program participant to notify the Recreation Department at the time of the registration process of any medical (physical or psycho-social) condition that requires consideration by the Recreation Department staff. It is necessary to identify these special needs for the concern and safety of the individual, other participants, and the Recreation Department staff. We will respect your confidentiality. The Recreation Department assumes no responsibility for injuries or accidents occurring at programs or activities. Insurance for such would make program fees prohibitive.

Lunches & Snacks

Campers may sign up for the 12:00-1:00pm lunch session only during the 5-week camp that runs immediately after the school district’s Summer Academy. Campers must bring a lunch each day. Lunches will not be provided by the Recreation Department. All campers are encouraged to bring drinks and snacks.

Camp Philosophy

The Nicolet Recreation Department Summer Camp at the Hills is designed to provide participants with a safe, primarily outdoor, age-appropriate playing and learning opportunity. Recreational experiences enhance all children’s developmental needs and help create a positive self image through socialization and creativity.

-17Guest Passes

Because our staff recognizes the importance of attending camp with a friend, guest passes are considered for all campers. Simply complete a form at the camp location, pay the nominal fee of $15.00 and we do everything else. Your child’s guest will get to enjoy the everyday activities that accompany our day camp program. However there are some guidelines and restrictions that must be followed: • Guest pass requests will only be accepted with the completed form and the fee paid in full. • Guest pass requests will only be honored if all fines and fees are up to date. • Guest pass requests will not be accepted for any field trips or special events. • Only one child may accompany your child per day-based on space available. • Guest passes will be accepted after the first week of camp. • Your guest must adhere to all other guidelines set forth by the Nicolet Recreation Department.

Americans With Disabilities

Nicolet Recreation Department programs, activities, and services are subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as to all applicable laws regarding nondiscrimination. If you or someone you know has a disability and is interested in attending or participating in the Recreation Department programs, activities, or services, the Nicolet Recreation Department will make reasonable accommodations to facilitate that opportunity. Please contact the Recreation Department as soon as it is practicable before the program start date.

Field Trips

Campers will be going on various field trips throughout the summer. The fees for the field trips will be built into registration costs. The children may need extra money on the field trips for lunches, snacks, or activities. Checking the field trip box on the registration form, enables your child to attend. These field trips will be carefully planned and supervised by our staff.

Location

The Nicolet Recreation Department in cooperation with the Nicolet High School District strives to provide the optimum facility for summer camp at Glen Hills Middle School. Not only do we utilize the school, its swimming pool and outdoor grounds, but also local parks and businesses.

Typical Day

When campers are not swimming or participating on field trips, camp counselors lead their grade in arts & crafts, sports, games, and other fun-filled summer activities. Parents will receive a calendar detailing each day’s events upon registration.

summer camp Registration

The Nicolet Recreation Department will begin accepting registrations starting Monday, March 3. Early registration deadline is Friday, May 30. Registration deadline is Wednesday, June 18. On-line registration is available for summer camp along with mail-in, fax, walk-in, and drop box.

Photograph Policy

The Nicolet Recreation Department uses photos of participants in its bulletins and special ads to inform others of our recreational opportunities. We do not use name identifications. If you do not want a photo taken, please tell our photographer. If one has already been taken, please contact the office at (414) 351-7566 and let us know it should not be used.

Pick-ups and Drop-offs

The Camp at the Hills staff puts in long hours planning, organizing, and implementing the camp. Please pick up your child from camp at the scheduled time. In previous years this has been a problem. To help eliminate the problem, we will be assessing a late fee penalty for delinquent parents. For every ten minutes a parent is delinquent a $10.00 late fee will be assessed and is to be paid before the camper returns to camp. For example, if a camper is scheduled to be picked up at 4:00pm and the parent arrives at 4:25pm, a $25.00 late fee will be assessed. We need to stringently adhere to this policy to ensure the safety and welfare of everyone. If your child is late arriving at camp please escort them to their correct group.

*NEW DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES*

Please pick up and drop off your children at the following locations each day: 12 PM Lunch Hour: Meet in the Commons Area 1 PM Drop Off: Glen Hills Playground or Gymnasium (back of building) 4 PM & 5:30PM Pick Up: Glen Hills Front Doors Parents must pick up children at the front doors. CHILDREN MUST WAIT AT THE CURB with their counselors for pick up and will not be allowed to walk into the parking lot unattended. Doors will be locked at 5:30pm

Swimming

Swimming and playing in the water are a great part of the summer and we enjoy them at our camps. The Recreation Department provides lifeguards, but please make sure your child feels comfortable in the water at all times.

Confirmation

Parents/guardians will be mailed confirmation letters once their children are registered for camp. The information will include camp phone number, day-to-day schedule, etc.

-18Residency

Am I a resident? There are a number of methods of residency. A resident of Nicolet is anyone maintaining a permanent address in the communities of Bayside, Glendale, Fox Point, or River Hills at the time of participation. Any student currently enrolled in or attending Nicolet High School or any public/private elementary and middle school in the communities of Bayside, River Hills, Fox Point, or Glendale at the time of participation. Anyone who graduated from Nicolet High School. Individuals who meet one or more of these requirements will pay the resident fee for any program offered by the Nicolet Recreation Department. Individuals who fail to meet at least one of these requirements do not have the same rights and privileges as residents and will be required to pay the Non-resident fee. The Nicolet Recreation Department reserves the right to make the final determination on residency using the above criteria.

Staff

The Nicolet Recreation Department continues to attribute the success of the camp to a carefully selected and welltrained staff. Most adult counselors have degrees in education or related fields. Over 3/4 of the 2013 evaluations rated the staff as doing an excellent job. Our 2013 camp staff was considered enthusiastic and mature. Many will be returning for the 2014 Summer Camp - building on years of experience. Camp at the Hills Director, Lisa Vondra, a DPI Licensed Professional Educator along with two assistant directors, encourage guidance and leadership to both campers and staff.

Participant Policy

The objective of the Nicolet Recreation Department is to provide a positive leisure experience for all participants. To ensure this, certain rules and policies are required for your child’s safety and enjoyment as well as that of others: • Show respect to all participants, staff, facilities, and equipment. • Foul or obscene language and/or causing bodily harm to any staff member or participant will not be tolerated. Displaying inappropriate behavior may lead to permanent removal from the program, resulting in forfeiture of all fees. • Behavior that endangers the safety of participants in any way will not be tolerated. The Recreation Department reserves the right to dismiss participants whose behavior is determined to be a threat to the safety of themselves or others. It will also result in forfeiture of all fees.

He developed the Nicolet Tennis Club which helped produce numerous state champion tennis players at the high school and fueled the all-time consecutive state championship record for high school tennis. He also created such ground breaking activities in the 1960’s and 70’s as over 30 basketball league, girls softball league, water ballet, the Community All-Star Baseball League, and school dances led by the Youth Council which he organized. He helped design and build the Nicolet Knightskeller that opened in 1969 and served as a gathering place and community center as well as a dance hall for the Nicolet Joint School District. He was a member of the Joy Singers Choir that regularly entertained at nursing homes and events. He could play four musical instruments, fix anything as a Mr. Fix It, do building and construction work, be an organizer and leader, and a caregiver. Son Dan also won the James Lubotsky award and was on the Math and Baseball teams (1980). Son Bruce was a champion on the Math Team (1979) and later became a UWM Math Professor.

"I remember Mel as a friendly, competent individual who had a deep commitment to Nicolet and the Nicolet Recreation Department. He was a hard worker and had a wonderful work ethic, always trying to not only get things done, but trying to get things done perfectly. All his efforts were well-planned and executed. The results spoke for themselves." --Marilyn Franklin, Nicolet School Board President "Mel Wade is a Nicolet treasure. He was a wonderful person to talk to. He served as a mentor to me when I came to Nicolet in 1998. He shared with me some wonderful stories and great wisdom and was always very complimentary and supportive of Nicolet and its staff members. Pickleball

Yes, PICKLEBALL – the fun game with the funny name! Created in the backyard of Washington Congressman Joel Pritchard in 1965, it is a combination of badminton, tennis and table tennis, and is enjoyed by people of all ages. Using a badminton-sized court, tennis-height net, table tennis-type paddle, and a baseball-sized wiffle ball, usually played by doubles, this game has few rules and is far less strenuous than tennis. It is easy to learn and provides plenty of exercise and eye-hand coordination; a game of strategy for both men and women, you don’t have to be tall and powerful. Want to watch a video? Go to USAPA.org, click on link to “What is Pickleball?” REGISTER for the LIMITED ATTENDANCE FREE CLINIC to learn the game, or we invite you to sit in on any open court session to see if you’d like it. *Pickleball participants must purchase a punch card in the Recreation Office (Monday – Friday - 8am – 4pm) for $30 for residents/$40 for non-residents which is good for 10 plays for either Thursdays or Saturdays. Each participant is responsible for bringing their card each time they play. Once the card is completed, participants can purchase another card for ($30/$40) for 10 more plays.
