Registration Information Online registration begins Wednesday, December 5th. All other forms of registration (phone, mail-in, fax, walk-in, and drop box) begins on Wednesday, December 19th.

Dear Nicolet High School Community Member, The Nicolet Recreation Department invites you to participate in our extensive program offerings. I’m excited to announce that our art instructor, Judy Gahn Murphy, designed the bulletin cover appropriately called “Emerging Spring.” As you page through our bulletin, which has expanded to 68 pages, you will find a total of 144 different programs for the Winter/Spring. This includes 51 brand new programs! There is truly Something For Everyone. We have programs for toddlers, youths, teens, adults, and senior citizens. For your convenience, we have activities at 20 different locations in the area. We hope you will take advantage of all the activities offered and enjoy your involvement in them!

All children should be re-evaluated or call Cindy at (414) 531-SWIM if you were not registered during the last 6 months*** Class Requirement Description Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1 Ages 6 months to 4 years with no previous experience. Children are to wear swim diapers under swimsuit. Level 1 introduces basic skills to parents and children. Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, including how to appropriately support their child in the water and how to prepare and encourage their child to participate fully and try the skills. Several water safety topics are also introduced and directed to parents. Parent and Child Aquatics Level 2 Ages 18 months to 4 years with completion certificate of all level P/C I skills. Level 2 builds on the skills introduced in Level 1. Participants improve on these skills and learn more advanced skills. Preschool Aquatics Level 1

Ages 3.5 - 5 years without parent. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Level 1 Exit Skills Assessment Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for at lease 3 seconds then safely exit the water. While in shallow water, glide on front at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds then recover to a vertical position. Preschool Aquatics Level 2 Ages 3.5 - 5 years without parent. Children entering this course must have a Preschool Aquatics Level 1 certificate to be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements from Preschool Level 1. Level 2 Exit Skills Assessment Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 5 seconds then recover to a vertical position. Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, float for 5 seconds then recover to a vertical position. Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 5 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming on front for 3 body lengths. Preschool Aquatics Level 3 Ages 3.5 - 5 years without parent. Children entering this course must have a Preschool Aquatics Level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements from Preschool Level 2. Level 3 Exit Skills Assessment All preschool aquatics skills are done independently. Step from side into chest deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds and then return to a vertical position. Move into a back float for 5 seconds, roll to front, and then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills

Ages 6 - 13 years old. There are no prerequisites for this level.

Level 6 Exit Skills Assessment Swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes of your choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke. Jump into deep water, perform a survival float for 5 minutes, roll onto back and perform a back float for 5 minutes. Perform a feet-first surface dive, retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool at at depth of 7-10 feet, return to surface and return to starting point. Perform the Cooper 12-minute swim test and compare results with the pre-assessment results. Special Needs - All ages Children with special concerns with parent. Parent must provide all locker room care and in pool water assistance. Instructor will teach parents the skills to assist their child.

American Red Cross Aquatics are taught by certified instructors/aides with lifeguard training. Swimming instruction is a great way to introduce your child to the water, strengthening positive attitudes and proper swimming techniques. Nicolet Recreation Department is an authorized American Red Cross provider. Please read the following carefully: ÑÑ Children ages 4 years and up need to go into the locker room for their respective gender. ÑÑ All participants should be evaluated prior to the first day of lessons to ensure they are in the proper level, if they haven’t been evaluated in the last 6 months, unless they are in the lowest level. ÑÑ Parents please observe lessons from the outer pool lobby only. ÑÑ Persons observing from deck will be charged the open swim fee daily of $3.00R/$6.00NR ÑÑ Lessons may be combined or cancelled based on enrollment numbers. No makeup classes will be given. ÑÑ Classroom enrollment minimum is 5 participants; maximum is 6 participants per instructor for pre school levels ÑÑ Class enrollment minimum is 6 participants; maximum is 10 participants per instructor for school age levels. ÑÑ Registration deadline is the Thursday prior to the start of the session. ÑÑ All persons must exit the building 15 minutes after the conclusion of any aquatic program. ÑÑ Contact Cindy @ 531-SWIM if you need a skill assessment. Open/Lap Swim This combined program of family swim and lap swim is a great opportunity for you and your family to enjoy water indoors. Open swim is open to all ages, while lap swim is open to ages 12 years and up. A swim test will be required for those children wishing to swim in the deep end 22 yards non-stop front crawl with face in water and breathing plus tread water 20 seconds immediately following. Due to safety reasons, water rings and tubes are not allowed. It is recommended that all persons bring a lock to secure personal belongings, however, the lock must be removed and taken home at the end of the swim period. Pool rules, regulations and other pertinent information are posted in the pool area. All persons not participating in open/lap swim must observe from outer lobby or pay a participant fee. All children under 8 years of age must be accompanied in the pool by a paying adult. Limit 2 free children per adult. Exact change only will be accepted at pool location. All persons must exit the building 15 minutes after the conclusion of any aquatic program. If there are no participants in the pool with 30 minutes left the lifeguard will close the pool.

Babysitting Basic

The purpose of this course is to provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. Skills include a guide to leadership, the business of babysitting, being safe and sound on the job, understanding kids from 0 to 10, caring for kids from feeding to bedtime, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an emergency...Now what? Lifeguard Training

Program includes Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED. A pocket mask is included in the fee. Lifeguarding certification is current for two years. A pretest will be held on the first day of the program. Persons unable to complete the pretest satisfactorily will not be allowed to continue. Participation in all sessions is required. Must pass all tests with 80% or higher plus practical skills to be certified. Please bring proof of ages to first class. (Re-certs please bring proof of current certification and pocket mask). Gymnastics

Age-appropriate skills will be introduced and developed in this recreational instruction program. Participants will practice movements ranging from basic tumbling to use of balance beam and uneven parallel bars. Participants should wear non-restrictive clothing such as a bodysuit, t-shirt, shorts, gymnastics slippers, cotton socks, or bare feet. No tights, nylon socks, clothing with zippers, belt buckles, or jewelry. Long hair should be tied back. The Mommy & Me program is focused on movements, coordination, balance, rhythm, stretching, and basic kinetic skills for you and your little one. The class is set to music and will feature basic dance steps in ballroom dance, ballet, and jazz. Easy yoga-style moves are incorporated into the curriculum to help with flexibility and an increased range of motion. Parents focus on sculpting, strengthening, and elongating their muscles. Winter Wonderland Crafts - When those cold, snowy days of winter get you down, join us! Each class we will create two winterthemed projects with no snowpants required. We will create a giant snowman in the class and explore making snowflakes, bird feeders and even a mitten craft! An adult must accompany the child. Girls on the Run of Greater Milwaukee

A positive, youth development program offered to girls in 3rd - 8th grade which intertwines training for a 5K. All girls receive a free pair of shoes, water bottle, tshirt, all program materials and entrance to the 5K. ^Please note our Girls on the Run 5K (which all girls will want to attend) will be either June 8/9 (exact day/time TBD). Jazzercise Team Dance

This is a beginner level class for those girls who are interested in learning the basics plus some advanced skills on the floor, vault, balance beam and uneven bars. The girls will be learning a number of skills on all four events plus the beginning elements of the level 2 routines. They will also be taught strength training as well. Kickball is a recreational playground game which was originally called “Kick Baseball” and played just the same. It is truly lots of fun and most commonly played on school playgrounds. Learn To Ski or Snowboard at Sunburst

Whether you are an experienced skier/snowboarder or have never tried it, this program is for you. Each session includes one hour of lessons with the remaining time for open skiing or snowboarding. This class is designed for those ages 3-5 with little or no skating experience that have hockey on the brain. Class participants will learn the basics of skating with and without their hockey sticks including falling and getting up, marching, 2-foot glides, stopping and more. Hockey Skills 1-5

The Pettitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hockey Skills program is designed by USA Hockey and the Pettit Center to teach any level of ice hockey. Since skating skills are the foundation for success in hockey, the Pettit requires hockey players to complete Hockey Tots or Basic 1 (ages 6 & older) prior to registering for the Hockey Skills program. Graduates of this program are ready to progress into the Pettit Patriots Youth Hockey program or another local Youth Hockey program which usually begins each season in September. Fee includes six 40 minute classes, 20 minutes of designated skating school participant only practice time immediately following every class, complimentary public skating on day of class when available, plus 4 additional complimentary public skating passes to be used for practice time on non-class days throughout session. 2013 Youth Softball Leagues Program Descriptions TEE BALL

Tee Ball is for ages 4-6 (K4 thru 1st grade). This is a non-competitive program open to boys and girls with little or no previous baseball experience. Participants will learn the very basic fundamentals of baseball and organized games will be played but scores and standings will not be kept. Players will be randomly placed on teams. However, you may request to have your child be placed with their friends. Each player will receive mini Major League Baseball team replica shirts and hats. The first day (June 8) will be an orientation/practice session and uniforms and schedules will be handed out. All teams will be coached by a combination of paid high school students and adult volunteers. Coaches meetings will be held the week leading up to the first day. Volunteer coaches needed, please email Kirk_Krychowiak@nicolet.k12.wi.us if interested. A packet of information will be mailed to you upon registration. All league info will be posted on the Nicolet Recreation website under softball central. Games will be played on Saturday mornings at rotating times of 9am, 10am and 11am. PARENT PITCH

A step up from Tee Ball, Parent pitch is for those just finishing 1st or 2nd grade. First graders playing for the first time should start with Tee Ball. K5ers may register for this league if they have played Tee Ball before. This league is similar to Tee Ball and uses the same ball. No scores or league standings are kept. However, this is the league where the rules and defensive positions begin to be taught. There are no umpires in these games and all players must bat against pitches thrown by the volunteer parents. A volunteer adult Head Coach will be assigned to each team. It will be the Head Coach’s responsibility to solicit a team sponsor who will provide team shirts and hats, schedule practices and coordinate all team activities. Volunteer coaches are needed, please email Kirk_Krychowiak@nicolet.k12.wi.us if interested. Players are randomly assigned to teams by the school they attend, but you may request certain teams or to be with friends. Boater Safety

The Wisconsin legislature has recently passed a Mandatory Boating Education bill. This bill requires anyone born on or after 1-1-1989 and at least 12 years of age to have a boating safety education certificate to operate a motorboat on Wisconsinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s waterways. If you need a boating safety class, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering a WI DNR Safe Boating Class at Nicolet High School. Completion of the class and passing the class exam will satisfy the DNR requirement for the Mandatory Education. New requirement: all WI Recreational Safety Students are required to obtain a WI DNR Customer ID Number before the completion of any Recreational Safety Class and will also be required to provide that WI DNR Customer ID Number along with students personal information to the instructor. Great physical conditioning and a lot of fun! This sport offers something for everyone. Instruction will be offered for all who wish it. Rackets will be furnished or you may bring your own. Shuttlecocks will be provided. The schedule may change depending upon school calendar. Provide your email address on your registration form to receive information regarding changes in schedule.

The adult curriculum is designed to promote overall fitness, while mastering the basics of ice skating. Divided into 4 levels, adult skaters will progress at an individual rate. Fee includes six 40 minute classes, 20 minutes of designated skating school participant only practice time immediately following every class, complimentary public skating on day of class when available, plus 4 additional complimentary public skating passes to be used for practice time on non-class days throughout session. Gentle Yoga Flow with Yoga Fitness

Enjoy a light, gentle morning of flow-style Hatha yoga to refresh body and soul. This class offers a chance to unwind and improve mobility – with calming, yet energizing breathing, exercises and postures to improve circulation, balance, range-of-motion and strength, while promoting tranquility. Beginning Tai Chi and Qigong

Tai Chi is a series of gentle, flowing movements that have been practiced as a health exercise since ancient times in China. Tai Chi integrates the body and mind to improve health, fitness and relaxation. The movements emphasize the importance of weight transference, which helps balance and prevents falls. Pickleball

Yes, PICKLEBALL – the fun game with the funny name! Created in the backyard of Washington Congressman Joel Pritchard in 1965, it is a combination of badminton, tennis and table tennis, and enjoyed by people of all ages. Using a badminton-sized court, tennisheight net, table tennis-type paddle, and a baseball-sized wiffle ball, usually played by doubles, this game has few rules and is far less strenuous than tennis. It is easy to learn and provides plenty of exercise and eye-hand coordination; a game of strategy for both men and women, you don’t have to be tall and powerful. Want to watch a video? Sheepshead

Learn the popular card game of Sheepshead (Schafkopf – In German). It is a card game, originated in Central Europe in the late 1700s, and popular in Wisconsin, because of its’ large German-American population. Many European nationalities now enjoy this game of Sheepshead, which uses 32 cards (7s thru Aces), and accumulates points to determine the winner. Sign up for this fun and low-key course to learn the basics, or to improve your fundamental concepts. The Instructor has many years of experience and is eager to share his knowledge with you. Winds! Bams! Dragons! Learn an ancient game with a modern twist. Mah Jongg had been a popular game in America since the 1920’s. (Note: this is NOT merely matching tiles, sometimes erroneously called Mah Jongg.) Combining both luck and skill, you will find people of all ages. Although this game of Chinese tiles is played by 4 people, the play is individual so partners are not needed. Badger Band Concert

Under the direction of Professor Michael Leckrone, (he hasn’t retired as of printing) the Wisconsin Band has become the top collegiate marching band in the nation. Why? Because the Wisconsin Band consists of over 300 hard-working and enthusiastic students and staff members who strive to keep “raising the bar” year after year. On Thursday, April 18, the UW Varsity Marching Band will celebrate its 38th annual spring concert at the Kohl Center. No other college band puts on such an extravaganza complete with professional staging, lighting, sound and pyrotechnics performed for 25,000 Badger fans each year. The Wisconsin Band is pleased to announce another action-packed spring concert with special guests to be announced. There will be lots of surprises and effects during this 21/2 hour concert. Dinner stop (on your own) is at East Towne Mall and then on to the concert. This trip is extremely popular, please register ASAP. These tickets will go fast - please register ASAP.
