Biochemistry Major | Class of 2018

“A changemaker is someone who is taking courageous, audacious, and creative action to solve a social problem and contribute in a meaningful way to our society. Nazareth has prepared and equipped us to be the change that we need and the change that we desire to see in the world.”

The first in her family to graduate from college, Turner became an educator, social worker, and school administrator committed to the principles of restorative practice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is a champion of children and families and supervises education in New York State as a member of the Board of Regents.

“I traveled a bit of the world for internships, presenting research at national conferences, study abroad, and service trips all of which were things that I never imagined doing.”

The grandchild of migrants from Puerto Rico, Fuentes had no opportunities to take advanced courses at his high school. Nazareth faculty “went above and beyond to give me research opportunities, alumni connections, and countless hours of extra help.”

Fuentes went on to a top medical school — University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. While pursuing his medical degree, inspired by his Nazareth Fulbright teaching experience in Taiwan, he created a youth basketball skills program in the City of Rochester with a focus on healthy decision-making.

“I come from a carpenter family. My dad has always been into building things. That’s what drives me solving problems that people haven’t been able to solve before.”

At first glance, becoming a social media entrepreneur seems like an unusual path for a trumpet-playing music major.

By Cicero’s senior year of college, online tools for creatives had proliferated. He learned GarageBand, recording and producing beats and selling them out of his dorm room.

After college, Cicero earned a master’s degree in advertising at Syracuse University and worked for a few startups in San Francisco. He built new social publishing and analytics tools for publishers and media companies. In 2014, he and partners bootstrapped Delmondo, a social media analytics company.

“At Naz I learned service above self, to think about how we can understand the world around us, how to think critically and really deeply about these questions, how we as individuals fit into that, and how we can make a difference.”

De Chateauvieux’s work combines her passion for equity and human rights with skills and perspective she gained at Nazareth.

Willow Domestic Violence Center serves more than 8,000 clients annually and reaches another 12,000 people through prevention education.
