All students study Religious Education as a core subject with 4 periods per cycle of 60 mins for each lesson. Students must select ONE of the following:
Year 10 Religious Education
Students study four units:
• The Changing Church
• Conscience & Morality
• Caring for the World
• The Gospel of Mark.
OR
Year 10 Youth Ministry (CSYMA) Students may elect Youth Ministry as their Religious Education studies. The focus is on leadership theory and ministry skills. The main outcomes are sacramental liturgy activities with our feeder primary schools. Core parts of Year 10 Religious Education are studied to ensure student’s ability to choose the different courses on offer in Year 11.
Students must select ONE of the following:
Year 11 RELIGION & SOCIETY UNIT 1&2 – Unit 1 In this unit students
explore the spiritual origins of religion and understand its role in the development of society, identifying the nature and purpose of religion over time.
Unit 2 Ethics is concerned with discovering the perspectives that guide practical moral judgment. An important influence on ethical perspective is the method of ethical decision-making, made up of concepts, principles and theories. Satisfactory completion of this unit will count as two units of VCE.
Students must select ONE of the following:
Year 12 Religious Education- A study of six varied units with different teachers over terms 1 to 3. Material covers a variety of topics, including core Catholic beliefs, art and spirituality, and the dignity of the human person.
OR
Year 10 Music Ministry Students may elect Music Ministry as their Religious education studies. The main outcomes are musical with a performance aspect within the College community. Core parts of Year 10 Religious Education are studied to ensure student’s ability to choose the different courses on offer in Year 11.
OR
Year 11 RELIGION & SOCIETY UNITS 3&4. High achieving students may be offered this VCE as an ATAR scored, acceleration subject. This course may be taken as a 5th or 6th VCE subject. If students select this option they will not be required to undertake the Year 11 Religious Education. As such these students will have two study periods per week instead..

Year 12 RELIGION & SOCIETY UNITS 3&4
These studies will contribute to the student’s ATAR score. If students select this option they will not be required to undertake the Year 12 Religious Education. As such these students will have two study periods per week instead..

Year 11 Youth Academy as a continuation of Year 10 Youth Ministry. ACU La Salle Youth Academy is a module-based study in furthering leadership and ministry skills. Students will contribute to the faith-life of the College in a variety of aways. These studies will contribute 5 points to the student’s ATAR score.
OR
Year 12 Youth Academy as a continuation of Year 11 Youth Academy. ACU La Salle Youth Academy Module 5. Students must have completed Modules 1 to 4 in Year 11. Module 5 incorporates content and activities, with the aim of moving the student’s faith-life from within the college, into the life of the Catholic Church in society.

● Sacrament, Prayer and Liturgy
● Morality and Justice
Victorian Curriculum Capability Standards are also incorporated into the units of work that the students will study, recognising that Religious Education has the ability to be of benefit across all areas of the College’s academic and faith life.
At Year 10, students are led to respond to the activity of God in their lives and to celebrate the mystery of the risen Christ. Students gain access to Scripture (the inspired word of God), the traditions of the Catholic community, its teachings and practices. Through study and exposure to the faith, students gain insight into the mysteries of life’s experiences through a Catholic perspective. Year 10 International students will study a modified version of this course.
During Semester One students will study and report upon the causes and consequences of The Reformation Era. They also explore certain Church Councils highlighting the effects of these on the Catholic Church and society in general, within which the Nine Aspects of Religion from the VCE Religion & Society study design are used to help understand these changes. Students also complete a unit on Conscience and Decision Making, concluding this with a report on the Catholic Church’s views on making a good moral choice.
During Semester Two students explore the Catholic Church’s view and responses to issues of justice in society through a Unit entitled Caring for Our World. This will include a research report on an issue of injustice as seen in society. The final unit sees students completing an exegesis of the Gospel of Mark, through the lens of the Context Method and the Chiastic Structure contained within the Gospel of Mark.

The Music Ministry course is designed to inspire and equip Nazareth students to respond to the Catholic Church’s vision whereby schools become centres of the New Evangelization. The emphasis on Music Ministry is to awaken and enhance the musical talents of students in expressing and growing in their faith through music. Engagement and connection to our faith through music are very important elements of the learning process and in deepening our faith journey.
Students must be able to sing or play a musical instrument and attend an interview before being accepted into this subject.
In Year 10 Music Ministry, students will develop the knowledge, skills and understandings to enable them to learn about the Christian call to stewardship through music.
Musical Dimensions
Music Ministry offers students opportunities to engage in the practice of performing, creating and studying Biblical and spiritual meaning behind liturgical music in different forms, styles and cultures.
Faith & Spiritual Dimensions
Students research contemporary songs, hymns (both traditional and more modern), their meaning and message; make links to the liturgical calendar and perform these songs at celebrations, events and masses during the school year.
Creative & Technical Dimensions
Students use technology such PowerPoint and Movie Maker to create visually engaging presentations to create artistic displays to make the celebration of liturgy more fruitful, meaningful and relevant.
Performance Dimension
This dimension focuses on building performance skills. Students present as a unified group to perform a selection of songs throughout the semester using voice and/or instrument. They prepare for performance by setting up sound and musical equipment correctly, and practise technical work to address each event’s challenges.

The Youth Ministry course follows on from the Year 9 CSYMI unit. It is designed to inspire and equip Nazareth students to respond to the Catholic Church’s vision whereby schools become centres of the New Evangelisation.
While the Year 9 course offers an introduction to Youth Ministry, at Year 10, the emphasis widens to include Ministry and Leadership. Students deepen their ministry to younger students and start to become involved in College leadership work through structured guidance provided in class. These culminate in student run sacramental preparation retreats for our feeder primary schools.
Although the main curriculum focus is on Youth Ministry, students will also complete units of work from Year 10 RE to ensure their ability to undertake Year 11 Religion & Society or acceleration into Religion & Society Units 3 & 4. These include core elements from The Reformation Era, Conscience & Decision Making and Caring for Our World units.
