We are delighted that you are joining our community and hope that this booklet provides some further information to assist you in settling into your new school.
Staff and students at Nazareth are friendly and keen to help you at any time. I am sure that before too long your child will know their way around campus, will have made new friends and will be engaged in their learning and life around Nazareth.
Take time to read through this booklet so as to gain a deeper knowledge of our school.
Again, welcome to Nazareth College where your child will experience a wonderful Catholic education.
MR SAM COSENTINO Principal

LEADERSHIP
The student leaders within our Nazareth community help make Nazareth the best school it can be.
We have House Leaders at every year for each house. We have six houses: Chisholm (yellow), Knox (purple), MacKillop (red), Mannix (green), McAuley (blue) and McCormack (white).
Leadership positions are awarded to students in Years 7 to 11 with one male and female leader for each house. There are also two Year 12 leaders who help the Head of House run all House activities and assemblies.
The leaders of each house help with all College events such as open school tours, masses and assemblies, just to name a few. So how do you apply for a leadership position? Well it’s easy!
At the start of each year we reopen leadership positions so that new faces have the chance to apply You need to express an interest to your Head of House in writing, explaining why you think you would be a good leader for your house, write a speech and then address your year level within your House.
Your peers within your year level will then vote for who they think will best fulfil the leadership role for your year level.
I hope to see you applying for a House leadership position this year!
MR SAM COSENTINO Principal

HOUSE INFORMATION

McAuley
HEAD OF HOUSE
Ms Gabriella Spano

James McAuley was born at Lakemba, NSW, in 1917. He had a distinguished academic career which culminated in his appointment as Professor of English at the University of Tasmania. He was a convert to Catholicism and is best known for his poetry which was rich in religious imagery. In particular McAuley is significant for the way in which he related religious themes to the Australian context.
MacKillop
HEAD OF HOUSE
Mr Joshua Cowan

Blessed Mary MacKillop was beatified in January 1995, and was an outstanding religious woman of the 19th Century. In 1866 she founded the teaching order of St Joseph.A measure of her success can be seen in the fact that when she died in 1909 her order had nearly one thousand members, having started its teaching mission in a disused stable forty three years earlier.
Chisholm
HEAD OF HOUSE
Ms Gill Coyle

No person did more to and protect migrants in 19th Century Australia than Caroline Chisholm. In 1848 in England she founded the Family Colonisation Loan Society to assist the poor to emigrate as families. In Australia she travelled widely in the bush and personally settled 11,000 people in towns and farms. Her portrait on the original $5.00 note commemorates her outstanding life of service to others.

Mannix
HEAD OF HOUSE
Miss Antigone Kappas

Daniel Mannix was Archbishop of Melbourne from 1912-1962. This outstanding churchman had been president of Ireland’s National Seminary before his arrival in Australia and he became a popular and dynamic leader of Australian Catholics. Mannix was a tireless fighter for the rights and for the funding of Catholic schools.
Knox
HEAD OF HOUSE
Mr Rodney Diaz

James Knox was ordained a priest in 1941. He placed a very strong emphasis on study and was awarded Doctorates in Theology and Canon Law. He travelled extensively to assist communities in need and at all times worked in accordance with the teachings of Mother Teresa. In 1967 he was appointed Archbishop of Melbourne and again placed his focus on education. He established the Institute of Catholic Education, which grew into the Australian Catholic University, that now has campuses across Australia. He identified people with gifts and talents with whom to work, giving them responsibility, trust and support. James Robert Knox was appointed Cardinal in 1973 and died in 1983.

McCormack
HEAD OF HOUSE
Ms Hayley McMillan

Irene McCormack was born in Western Australia in 1938. She believed in the power of education and in 1956 joined the teaching order of the Sisters of St Joseph, spending the next 30 years teaching in rural and poor areas. In 1987, she moved to Peru to carry out the work of service to the poor. She strengthened communities by identifying leaders from within those communities who could encourage others. In 1991 Irene McCormack was shot dead by terrorists who did not want her work of strengthening communities to continue. Irene McCormack is predicted to be Australia’s second saint, in recognition of her wonderful work in education and in supporting the poor and needy.

EUCHARIST CELEBRATIONS & VINNIES
WHOLE SCHOOL MASSES
Each term the whole Nazareth Community comes together to celebrate Mass. It is important to come together to celebrate who we are as a Catholic College. Mass is a central part of our Catholic Faith.
Term 1 - Opening of the School Year Mass
Term 2 - Mass of Social Justice
Term 3 - Nazareth Day Mass & Assumption Mass
Term 4 - Mass of Thanksgiving
Every Thursday morning at 8:10am Mass is celebrated in the Chapel. This is a wonderful way to start your day. All are welcome.
LITURGIES
Throughout the year each Class will celebrate Mass together in an RE period. We also have liturgies for significant events in the Church year such as Ash Wednesday and Easter. As a school we also have prayer and remembrance services for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. Houses also celebrate the Feast of their patron.
VINNIES GROUP
The Vinnies Group is made up of a group of students who strive to put their faith into action. Vinnies is open to students from Years 7-12 and they are given a specially designed badge to indicate their commitment to the group. Throughout the year, Vinnies promote awareness and coordinate fundraising activities in line with the mission of Nazareth College and the Saint Vincent De Paul Society.

With a strong focus on assisting the poor and marginalized, events like the Winter Sleepout provide students with a sense of what it may be like for people who are homeless and do not have the comforts of home. The Social Justice Mass, held each year, sees the Vinnies drive the Winter Appeal, encouraging the entire school community to donate much needed supplies of non-perishable food items, toiletries, blankets and clothing. An Easter Raffle raises funds for the St Anthony’s tutoring program as well and other fund raising events that may arise due to world and local events.
The Vinnies group meets once a fortnight to discuss upcoming events and activities. It is a wonderful group to be a part of and many connections are made between students from across the year levels.

YEAR 7 CAMP
One of the most important events in the life of a Year 7 student at Nazareth College is the Year 7 camp. For many years, students and staff have made the four-hour journey to Valley Homestead Myrtleford.
The natural beauty of the area’s mountains, rivers and valleys, together with a diversity of culture, agriculture and historical attractions make the area a wonderful place to visit.
The homestead is a comfortable country resort with ensuite bedrooms, basketball courts, and amazing activities! The food is plentiful and delicious. The staff at the homestead are very friendly and helpful. Under the supervision of trained staff, students engage in a range of activities from the Power Pole and Dual Flying
Fox, Aerial Obstacle Course, Climbing and Vertical Challenge to the Free-Fall Slide.
You will learn bush cooking skills, have a trivia night, a campfire and go on the reflector trails night walk. It is a wonderful camp and helps the Year 7 students bond as a group and get to know their teachers outside of the classroom environment.
As a Year 7 cohort you will be split into two groups, with the first group attending the two-night camp on Monday 24th March to Wednesday 26th and the second group attending Wednesday 26th to Friday 28th March. You will find out at the start of the year which group you will be in.
The camp always leaves a lasting memory of the first year of students’ journey at Nazareth College!

COUNSELLING
At Nazareth College, we are a learning community centered around the teachings of Jesus Christ. We aim to help you grow in faith, wisdom, and knowledge, while also encouraging you to develop as a whole person.
We understand that taking care of your emotional wellbeing is just as important as your academic achievements. That’s why we offer a counselling service to support you. Whether you’re dealing with challenges at school or in your personal life, our counselling team is here to help.
If you’re ever feeling like you need someone to talk to or need extra support, our psychologist and counsellors are available to assist you. They are dedicated to helping students just like you work through tough situations.
If you’re interested in counselling, speak to your pastoral teacher or Head of House, and they will help you connect with the right support. Remember, you’re not alone—Nazareth College is here to help you grow and succeed, both in school and in life.

WELLBEING CENTRE

Nazareth College is committed to developing the whole person, and this is supported through our extensive Wellbeing program.
We provide our students with a Wellbeing Centre, a calm, tranquil place where students can relax, unwind and find support when they need it most. The Centre is open on a needs basis during class time for individual students, and open for all students to come and relax at lunchtime. Each lunchtime the Wellbeing Centre comes to life with students chatting to their friends, playing games together, reading magazines, relaxing on the bean bags or having a chat to staff.
Many new friendships have been formed over games of Uno, or creating artwork on the whiteboard.
The Director of Wellbeing has an office in the Wellbeing Centre, which assists in supporting students through their more challenging times.
