PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
The 2024 school year has brought about many positive changes. Learning areas and facilities were completed and handed over to the school for student use in early March, which included:
• The Food Technology Centre;
• Multimedia Room plus a Maker Space Room;
• Amphitheatre.
Bishop Anthony Ireland and our local member for Parliament, Cr Eden Foster, opened these new learning areas in March.
I thank our Business Manager, Mr Lee Perry, for his lead in our building projects and having our school in a good financial situation where these projects are able to take place, with the assistance of State and Government grants.
This year saw our most significant number of Year 7s commence with 176 students, and our total enrolments peaking at 900. I thank our dedicated staff, Marketing Department, and Facilities and Maintenance Team for the impressive state our college is in both in community building and facilities, which contribute to making Nazareth the school of choice for many of our feeder schools.
This year also saw the introduction of a Study Centre for Year 12 students to encourage quiet and sustained study. The centre has ensured that Year 12 students can spend six hours per week of supervised dedicated study time at school in a quiet environment, which complements the collaborative rooms in the Resource Centre and quiet areas in the Wellbeing Centre. This will hopefully result in better ATAR scores and improve results for our students.
The new counselling quarters, Nazareth House, is also open and has allowed many students to seek assistance and support when needed. The Wellbeing Team has grown to accommodate the increasing enrolment numbers, and the new facility is another welcome asset to the College.
This year has been a year where expectations have been clearly articulated and carried through. This has resulted in a more positive culture regarding both learning and wellbeing.
I thank our Wellbeing Team, Counsellors and Pastoral Teachers for their care toward our students and families.
Thank you to the members of our Nazareth Advisory Committee, Finance Committee, Consultative Committee, NCCA Committee and our local parish priests. These groups collaboratively ensure that the school operates at its core best.
Our student leaders and student voice teams have helped transform the school and prioritise what needs to be done to continue to improve the school. The School Captains and House Captains have served the College well.
All the very best to the Year 12 class of 2024. Your leadership has been inspiring and will leave a good legacy for others to follow.
In conclusion, I thank the Leadership Team, especially Justin Duckett and Claire Nailon. Their leadership has helped the College thrive and continues to strengthen the excellent reputation we have built over the past years.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL STAFF & STUDENTS
Our 2024 theme is let your light shine before others (Matthew 5:16). We have certainly seen the light of our 900 students shine brightly throughout the year.
The College has grown again numerically this year, and we have seen students grow in their academic levels, as well as an increase in the number and variety of opportunities offered to students.
As a school, we have introduced VCE Outdoor Education, which has seen students rock climbing, camping in the snow, canoeing, snorkeling and learning and experiencing things they have never had the opportunity to be involved in before. Students have travelled interstate for Volleyball and Aerobics, and we have had students represent the College in a wide variety of sporting, creative, artistic and cultural activities. We have also established a Study Centre to assist our Year 12 students in utilising their study time at school. All these new initiatives enable each of us to grow as a person and to shine our light before others.
Our staff has also grown, with over 20 new staff this year. We have employed staff with years of experience, as well as fresh, enthusiastic graduates. These staff have added depth and energy to our already great team, and we have seen the light of Nazareth able to shine even brighter.
It is indeed a great blessing to work in this community. Our school review spoke so positively of us as a community, and I am so grateful for the people who make up our college. We have wonderful students and a fantastic, committed staff who work so well to serve our students. I would like to particularly acknowledge the wonderful job our Heads of
House, Pastoral Teachers and counsellors do following up, supporting and caring for our students. It is a blessing to be on the team with them and witness their wonderful work. I would also like to thank Merryn Molloy for her generous, professional, and tireless work supporting me and so many in our community throughout 2024. The Leadership team received very positive feedback via our independent reviewers. I am humbled and blessed to work with such great people and be on such a wonderful team. Thank you to all the members of our College Leadership Team.
A big thank you also to all our parents and families for their great support. You as the primary educators of your children entrust us with your children and we are honoured, grateful, and humbled to be given this responsibility and are aware of what a privilege (and responsibility) this is. Thank you for trusting us and for your support throughout the year.
Finally, thanks be to God for the great gift of Nazareth College and for all the blessings, both those we enjoyed and those that were difficult, throughout 2024. We ask God to help all of us open our hearts more and more to His abundant love, and we pray the coming of the Christ child that we celebrate at Christmas may fill our hearts, families, and Nazareth Community with the love, peace and joy that only come from Him.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING & LEARNING
Our School Improvement Plan has three areas of focus:
• Community Engagement
• Feedback
• A Performance and Development Culture
Outlined below are some of the highlights of the year in the area of Learning.
Focus 1: Community Engagement
This year we continued working on expanding student choice with subjects, particularly students in Year 9 and 10. Subjects such as Solving World Problems Through Coding and AI, and Concept Art and Digital Rendering have proven to be popular with students, based on Subject Selection numbers.
Our Middle School Studies Coordinator Chris Brown collaborated with students to plan a Year 10 Formal again. High achieving students in Year 8 participated in M Cubed, a first for our school. Year 9s enjoyed their City Experience, with some time spent at the William Angliss campus in the CBD.
The Subject Selection Evening and Careers Expo was a great opportunity for parents and students to meet with teachers and tertiary providers. I thank Elena Flodstrom for her work in organising the Careers Expo, with over 20 presenters on the night.
We focused as a staff on the High Impact Wellbeing Strategy of “Establish and Maintain Clear Classroom Expectations”. We were pleased that students understood the importance of these expectations as demonstrated by their responses to the Pivot Surveys.
Focus 2: Feedback
The program Quality Teaching Rounds continued. This is
an initiative where a group of three teachers observe each other’s classes and give feedback on the lesson. This is a valuable way of learning about what quality teaching looks like.
This year we have again endeavoured to elicit feedback from students about their wellbeing, and we have also asked students to give some feedback to teachers. We have done this through the Pivot Platform. This has given teachers and school leaders a valuable insight into students’ attitudes and experiences.
We received feedback as a school as a result of our School Review. We are excited to be working on creating a Teaching and Learning Framework in 2025 and building the capacity of our Middle Leaders.
Focus 3: A Performance and Development Culture
Teachers and school leaders have worked together again this year to build the professional capital of our College. Teachers have worked on Action Research projects that are centred on one of three areas. These are VCE Improvement, Literacy, and Differentiation. Teachers undertook Action Research and presented this research to their groups in Term 4.
I would like to thank some members of our community: our Principal, the Deputy Principal Staff and Students and the College Leadership Team who have supported me, the Senior Studies Coordinator Marjoleine Dekker, the Middle School Studies Coordinator Christopher Brown, the Instructional Leaders who drive the innovation in our learning programs, Ms Vicky Lazaridis and Ms Julie Carlin who coordinate Educational Support for learning, the committed and creative Nazareth College teaching staff, and, of course, our Nazarene students, the people who make it all worthwhile.

NAZARETH COLLEGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
I am pleased to report that the school has had another very good year. Some of the highlights for 2024 have been:
• The building program announced in the 2023 Yearbook has now been completed, and thanks to the efforts of the school’s management team, a grant of $3.6 million for the construction of a new Student Hub has been secured;
Student numbers are increasing, indicating the trust that parents have in Nazareth College being a great place to educate their children; and
• The school had a comprehensive quality review which went very well and confirmed that the College operates at a high standard.
The Advisory Committee met regularly throughout the year and discussed reports presented by the Principal, Finance Manager, and the NCAA, as well as points raised by the School Captains and Advisory Committee Members.
I thank all the members of the Advisory Committee for their contribution throughout the year, the assistance provided by Mr Sam Cosentino and staff in supporting the committee, and the willingness to share information with the committee. There are so many aspects in running a school successfully, and we all should be proud of the achievements in 2024.
Mr Glenn Williams Chair – Nazareth College Advisory Committee
FAITH & MISSION
Look back, to the end of 2023 our Year 12 students took part in a meaningful retreat led by the Passionist Retreat Team.
This special time of reflection, prayer, and celebration allowed the cohort to bond and take a well-needed pause before their final year.
The year began with a powerful Opening Mass in February, celebrated by Bishop Tony Ireland. During the Mass, Archbishop Tony blessed several of our new spaces marking an inspiring start to the year for our community.
Our community came together to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, where Mr Peter Nathan and four students shared their reflections on faith.
Throughout the year, our students engaged in Reflection Days focused on key themes:
• Year 7 explored Friendship, Belonging, and New Beginnings.
• Year 8 focused on Healthy Relationships, self-worth, and embracing diversity.
• Year 9 reflected on Self-Image/God’s Image.
• Year 10 explored Social Justice and Christian Service, with guest speakers from Catholic Mission and St Vincent de Paul.
• Year 11 participated in a retreat on Relationships and Personal Identity from a Catholic perspective.
Our community came together to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, where Mr Peter Nathan and four students shared their reflections on faith.
In addition, Year 11 student Jordan Tissera (2025 School Captain) was selected for the ACU School Leaders Program, which included an immersive leadership experience in Rome and London.
The Sacramental Program offered students the chance to receive Baptism, First Communion, Reconciliation, and Confirmation, with four students participating in the ceremonies held in Term 4.
A heartfelt thanks to our chaplains and Mr Peter Nathan for their dedication to fostering the vibrant faith life at Nazareth College. As we look ahead to 2025, we continue to pray for guidance in faith, hope, and love.
Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works, and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Holy Family of Nazareth, be our inspiration and our guide. Jesus of Nazareth, help us to grow in Faith, Wisdom and Knowledge.
Mr Peter Stewart Director of Faith and Mission
STUDENT WELLBEING
Wellbeing remains a top priority at Nazareth College, and this year we have successfully implemented programs to enhance the social and emotional growth of our students.
Our school reviewers noted that “Wellbeing is a defining characteristic” of our community, and we take pride in that recognition.
Wellbeing is woven into every aspect of school life. From lunchtime clubs to diverse extracurricular activities, we strive to create positive experiences for all students. Clear behavioural expectations and a focus on restorative practices help cultivate a calm, engaging learning environment that promotes personal growth. Our foundational values—Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience—underpin our school culture, and all staff are committed to a respectful and pastoral approach with students.
This year the Social and Emotional Learning Program (SEL) partnered with The Resilience Project which teaches positive mental health strategies to equip students with the tools to handle adversity. During Extended Pastoral time, students engaged in lessons cantered on Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness (GEM), along with Emotional Literacy, which enhances resilience.
We continued to implement the Pivot Wellbeing Survey, which provided us with timely insights into our students’ wellbeing. This data has been instrumental in addressing areas of concern and celebrating our successes.
Our SEL curriculum was enriched through various incursions. Year 11s heard from John Maher about road safety, while Year 10s participated in sessions from the Pat Cronin Foundation, focusing on conflict resolution. The RYDA Road Safety program provided Year 10s with vital skills as they prepare to become new drivers. Year 9s focussed on body image and self-acceptance, while Year 8s benefited from a mental health workshop by Toolbox Education, which presented preventative strategies in an engaging manner. Year 7s participated in “Step Up” to success, learning essential skills for a smooth transition to secondary school. Navigating the teenage years presents unique challenges, and we feel privileged to support students and families through this journey.
Counselling Team Update
In 2024, our counselling team relocated to the newly renovated Nazareth House, enhancing our collaborative efforts to provide quality care. We extend our gratitude to the College community for creating such a supportive environment.
As our student body grows, so does our counselling team, with the addition of social worker Gaylene, whose experience has enriched our support services.
Nazareth Day in 2024 coincided with RUOK? Day, encouraging meaningful connections within our community.
We thank the Wellbeing Team, Heads of House, and all staff for their continued support. Together, we strive to foster an environment where students can reach their full potential.
All the best from Casey, Brooke, Arlene and Gaylene

HENRY GRADUATES!
CULTURAL DAY
COLLEGE CAPTAINS
I started Year 12 focused on achieving the best ATAR to secure a successful future, but I soon realized that school is about more than just grades.
It’s about personal growth, learning from mistakes, and discovering who you are. While academics are important, maintaining balance is key. If you pour all your energy into studying and neglect your wellbeing, it can have a serious impact on your mental health. This year, I learned that, while studying is essential, your overall health and happiness should always come first.
A lesson I’ve learned is the importance of asking for help. In the past, I hesitated to seek help because I didn’t want to bother anyone, but I now realize that teachers are always happy to support you. Asking for help, whether academic or personal, can make a huge difference. I’m incredibly grateful to the Year 12 teachers and all the staff at Nazareth who have supported us throughout the year. Your guidance has been invaluable, and we wouldn’t have made it this far without you.
To the younger students, I encourage you to aim high and believe in yourself. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but remember that your goals are closer than they may seem. Perspective is everything. Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you, and take steps to step outside your comfort zone.
Don’t be afraid to apply for leadership positions—they teach important skills that will serve you well in life. Being College Captain has been a rewarding experience. It allowed me to connect with new people, mentor others, and grow as a leader. Though I’m sad to leave this role, I’m confident the new College Captains will represent you all with the same dedication.
To the Class of 2024, thank you. Whether we’ve shared classes or never spoken, each of you has made my time here unforgettable. I’m grateful for the memories we’ve created together. It’s been an honor to represent you as College Captain, and I wish you all the best for the future.
It’s hard to believe that our time at Nazareth College has come to an end, but we’ve made it!
After 13 years of school routines, endless study, and pressures, we’re finally here—graduates. Year 12 has tested each of us, but with the support of our families, teachers, and friends, we’ve persevered to reach this milestone.
I’m incredibly grateful to my family, who have been my rock through the toughest times, but their unconditional love and belief in me kept me going.
A huge thank you to my teachers for challenging and encouraging me to be my best. They didn’t just teach content—they were role models who inspired me to keep pushing forward. Their support and guidance have played a huge part in shaping who I am today.
I also want to thank Nazareth College for creating an environment where I felt like I truly belonged. This school has been my second home, a place where I could be myself and feel accepted.
To the younger students considering leadership roles, I urge you to step out of your comfort zone. Taking on leadership at Nazareth has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I encourage you to try, rather than wonder “what if.” You can make an impact, and greatness is within reach if you believe in yourself.
To my fellow Year 12s, whether you head straight to university, start work, take a gap year, or pursue TAFE or apprenticeships, I know you all have the potential to make a difference in the world.
We were warned how quickly these years would pass, and it’s true—time has flown by. To the younger students, cherish every moment at Nazareth because it will be over before you know it. Being your School Captain has been an incredible honor, and I’ve learned so much from this experience. Best of luck to next year’s College Captains. It is now time for us graduates to make a future for ourselves in this world. Congratulations to the Class of 2024— we did it!
Krystal Leah College Captain
Emma Sidea College Captain
COLLEGE VICE CAPTAINS
2024 has been a year of laughter, challenges, and growth, filled with memories that I’ll cherish.
I’ll always remember receiving the news I would be College ViceCaptain while on my way to Greece, thanks to a text from my friend Molly. Since then, this role has boosted my confidence and helped me grow as both a leader and a person.
Over my six years at Nazareth College, I’ve faced many challenges, but with the support of teachers, peers, and friends, I’ve always pushed through. The experiences here have shaped me and driven me to succeed, and I’m grateful for every opportunity.
As I prepare to leave Nazareth, I’m filled with mixed emotions. I’m excited for the future and the chance to leave behind the stress of SACs and assignments. But at the same time, I’m sad to close this chapter of my life. Thirteen years of formal education have passed in the blink of an eye, and sometimes I wish I could relive certain moments.
To my Year 12 cohort, I’m so proud of each of you. Don’t stress if you’re uncertain about your future—everyone moves at their own pace. Whether you’re heading to university, taking a gap year, or pursuing TAFE, trust that you’ll get where you need to be. As I leave, I want to share a quote I live by: “Comparison is the thief of joy. Appreciate what you have, before you trade it for something you think will be better.”
Thank you to the Nazareth community for everything. I’m proud to be a Nazarene
Georgia Starfas College Vice-Captain
When I began learning at Nazareth in 2019, I never expected to become the Vice-Captain.
However, my classes and countless unforgettable experiences have helped me discover my interests and realise that opportunities for me are endless.
I am incredibly grateful for the inspiring teachers who have fueled my curiosity and shaped my character in positive ways. I especially want to thank my Head of House, Mr Diaz, and my pastoral teachers Ms Florio and Mr Louis. I will miss the comfort of starting each day in Pastoral.
The journey that I and the incredible class of 2024 have shared fills me with optimism for our futures, no matter where life takes us. Though I may not know all of you, I believe each of you has grown into an extraordinary person, and that high school has shaped us all for the better. I hope we’ll meet again someday as people who have made positive changes in the world.
To the current students, remember that our special community here is sustained when you continue to learn and grow together in harmony. Embrace the opportunities that come your way – you never know where they might lead.
I am proud to call myself a Nazarene and I will carry the lessons I’ve learned here with me in every decision I make.
Kenzel Trinidade College Vice-Captain
It’s been an exciting year for our middle school students, with many opportunities for learning and fun.
I’m proud of their growth and engagement, and I’m looking forward to more achievements in 2025.
Year 10 Social:
The Year 10 Social was a fantastic evening for students to celebrate their achievements and socialise. Despite being on Friday the 13th, the event went smoothly, with students enjoying the DJ, dance floor, finger food, drinks, and a photobooth. Awards for best dressed and best dancer were also handed out—well done, Year 10!
Learning About Learning – Year 7:
Term 3 saw Year 7 students participating in ‘Learning About Learning’ sessions. These workshops helped students build skills for success, covering topics like sleep, procrastination, memory, self-control, and effective note-taking. Students also focused on keeping their organisers up to date to stay on top of their work.
Car Club:
The newly launched Car Club (Engineering Club) had a great start, with students proposing a project to build a remotecontrol Porsche. Students enjoyed working together during lunch breaks to follow detailed instructions and create their model car.
Overall the Middle School had a successful and progressive year. I look forward to continuing to develop opportunities for these students to succeed.
This year has been a productive one for our senior students, with plenty of opportunities for growth, collaboration, and preparation for the future.
Here’s a quick summary of some key initiatives and achievements.
Success Strategies Incursions:
Throughout the year, Year 10, 11, and 12 students participated in Success Strategies incursions run by Success Integrated. These sessions provided essential skills, from subject selection guidance for Year 10s to study, resilience, and focus techniques for Year 11s and 12s—skills that are valuable both during and after secondary school.
Silent Study Centre for Year 12s:
This year’s Year 12 students were the first to use the new Silent Study Centre, supervised by Ms Sandra D’Souza. By the start of Term 2, the space had become a popular and effective resource for focused study and task completion.
VCE Professional Learning Community (PLC):
Our VCE teachers worked together in a PLC to refine teaching practices, streamline VCE procedures, and improve assessment and feedback. Key initiatives included raising the standards for a pass, improving the subject selection process, and refining protocols for rescheduling assessments and trial exams.
I’d like to thank all our teachers for their dedication, particularly the VCE team, who have been instrumental in improving classroom practice and fostering a shared commitment to excellence. Special thanks to our Instructional Leaders, Heads of House, and International Coordinators for their ongoing support, including their help with Year 12 events and panel meetings.
I wish our 2024 Year 12 students all the best for their future endeavours. I’m excited to continue supporting our senior students in 2025.

YEAR 7 TRANSITION
Starting secondary school can be a very daunting prospect with new responsibilities and challenges, along with the expectations of being more independent.
The manner in which our Year 7 cohort has transitioned from the familiar, nurturing environment of their respective primary schools to becoming engaged members of the Nazareth College community has been most impressive. I have been continually inspired by the enthusiasm and excitement with which they look toward their future. Those Grade 5 children I met in 2022 are certainly ready to study, lead and make their mark.
Our Year 7s were able to experience an extra month transitioning into secondary school where the focus wasn’t on subject content but on learning skills that are needed by a secondary student. Of course we had fun activities thrown in to allow the Year 7s to bond with their Head of House and fellow Year 7 house members as well! We will continue to develop and add events to ‘Fabulous February.’ If any student has any ideas, I would love to hear them!
Taster Days have continued to flourish this year. We have been able to share an experience that cannot be taught in their setting to our primary schools in the area. These students have been able to live a day in the life of a secondary student and have their first taste of using
a timetable, moving from one class to the next, having unfamiliar classmates and of course the opportunity to make new friends, and meet new teachers with different teaching styles. It has been fantastic to have many of our Year 7 2025 cohort join us and use this as an extra transition day to become familiar with their new surroundings, meet some of their future peers and teachers and of course overcome some of the stress and anxiety that comes with dealing with change. It has been such a joy to work with these future Nazarenes and open up our great College to the wider community. We have hosted hundreds of Grade 4, 5 and 6 students who are eager to have a taste of college life at Nazareth. Many of these students have chosen to enrol and left with a greater experience and knowledge of what Nazareth truly is.
Students from Years 8-12 who are transitioning from other secondary schools had their own transition day to give them an opportunity to feel settled, comfortable and welcomed in our Nazareth community. I thank our student leaders for their assistance in this very important event on the transition calendar.
I certainly look forward to next year where I can only improve our current transition program and continue to build the very important relationships with our feeder primary schools and incoming families
Ms Emilia Roberts Transition Coordinator
SOCIAL JUSTICE
2024 has been an incredibly busy year for our fundraising efforts! A heartfelt thank you to all Vinnies members and the wider school community for their support.
In Term 1, our favourite annual Easter raffle raised $800. The Vinnies team enjoyed organising the hampers and selling tickets each morning. Staff and student donations enabled us to create 40 hampers. All proceeds went to the SVDP Education Program, supporting St. Anthony’s after-school tutoring. We also appreciate the students who dedicated their Tuesday afternoons to the Homework Club, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to helping others.
Term 2 saw our focus change to International Aid and supporting families within our community. A casual dress day and sausage sizzle raised $3,000 for Gaza victims and cancer research. This successful initiative was well supported by the Nazareth community.
As winter approached, our Winter Appeal reached new heights, collecting non-perishable foods and toiletries for those in need. Both students and staff generously contributed, and House Leaders organised friendly competitions to encourage donations. Congratulations to Lisa Vu for leading Mannix House to victory! Over $600 was also raised through a silent auction of hampers, and we thank Mrs Morina for her beautiful knitted rugs. The Vinnies Door-Dash Supermarket, set up by Ms Caitlin Mackay and a student leader, provided a convenient way for students to contribute.
In Term 3, we held the Comfy Clothes day, raising $1,600 for Beyond Blue, which supports mental health initiatives. The annual Vinnies Winter Sleepout on August 23 raised $2,600 for the homeless, featuring a soup meal, trivia, and a prayer service.
In Term 4, we initiated the ‘Assist A Student Appeal’ to support education for children in poorer countries and encouraged students to donate toys for our Christmas Giving Tree. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Ms Lisa Douglass Social Justice Coordinator
Thank you the entire Vinnies Team and school community for supporting the ‘Good Works’ that we have been able to achieve throughout 2024. Once again, it has been an absolute privilege to work with such amazing young people who spend their time supporting the needs of others. We were so fortunate to be led by both Julie and Abbie, and we wish both students every success as Julie ventures into a life beyond Nazareth, while Abbie begins her final year as school captain at Nazareth.
Through Vinnies, I have been able to push for fundraising initiatives and encourage students in our community. I have also appreciated the fact that new ideas are accepted, which is why I love being a Vinnies member. In my final year, I have enjoyed the role of President, and I am thankful to have shared this with my friend Abbie Diaz, a great Vice President.
Julie Hoang, President
Being the Vice President of Vinnies has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Knowing that I’ve contributed to making a difference in many lives has truly inspired me to continue these efforts in the future. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our President, Julie Hoang, for her unwavering support and generosity. Additionally, I am grateful to the entire Vinnies team for their dedication to attending meetings, organising fundraisers and activities, and leading the way with donations
Abbie Diaz, Vice-President

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
2025 will be a year of Jubilee both for Nazareth being 40 years old, and for the whole church, with Pope Francis calling for a year of pilgrimage in the hope of Jesus’ message of love for us.
In the theme song for the Jubilee are the lyrics, “Like a flame my hope is burning, may my song arise to you: Source of life that has no ending, on life’s path I trust in you.” We are pilgrims journeying together with Jesus of Nazareth, walking the path as the Nazarene community. Let us celebrate a joy-filled 2024.
This year has been a time of preparation together in the Religious Education (RE) Learning Area, both for staff and students. Our dedicated teachers, with the addition of a few new RE teachers, and many more students than previous years, have learnt together the love of Jesus through the RE curriculum. We pay tribute to Mrs Mary Thisgaard who passed this year, and the many years she led and taught in the RE Learning Area, sharing her love of Jesus with many thousands of young people throughout her time at Nazareth. May her reward shine as a light in God’s heavenly realm.
2024 has also been a year of anticipation as Melbourne awaits the updated Religious Education documents from MACS. To Know, Worship and Love (KWL) as a text will continue to be used as part of the movement of the Spirit in the newer curriculum for 2025. The new courses will be aligned to the MACS review as they become available.
Students at the various levels have participated in and completed their tasks successfully for the year. We pray as a staff that the Love of Jesus is known to all who are in our RE classes. 2024 has seen strong growth in Youth Ministry, evidenced in the successful organising and running of retreats for St Elizabeth’s Primary School, and through the various roles students played in school Masses and
Reflection Days. There were many incursions from guest speakers who imparted their knowledge to various year groups. The Bridging students successfully grew a veggie garden as part of their Creation unit.
In line with our continued call to mission we celebrate 2024 as a foretaste of the 2025 Jubilee year.
Mr Peter Nathan Instructional Leader - Religious Education
MATHEMATICS
As we reflect on the journey of the 2024 school year, we reflect on the achievements of our students in the Mathematics Department at Nazareth College. This year has seen more innovation, creating a learning environment that provides an engaging and diverse program.
Students have been involved in a Mathematics curriculum enriched with AI tools and Desmos activities, making their learning experiences both interactive and engaging. These resources have not only deepened their understanding of mathematical concepts but have also inspired a greater enthusiasm for the subject.
A standout initiative this year was the ongoing success of the QuickSmart program, designed to support middleschool students facing challenges in literacy and numeracy. By focusing on developing basic skills, QuickSmart has allowed students to tackle more complex problem-solving tasks, bridging gaps from primary school and taking the fear out of Maths.
Throughout 2024, we worked on engagement, achievement, and personal growth. Students improved their assessment skills through peer reviews, providing constructive feedback to one another and participating in open discussions about teaching methods.
Our approach to learning diversity for Years 7 to 9 continued in 2024. This framework allows us to customise our instruction to meet diverse student needs, ensuring every learner is both challenged and supported.
This year, we also welcomed several new teachers to our dedicated Maths team, further enhancing our educational offerings. We were delighted with the success of the statistics projects in the middle years. We were pleased to see encouraging improvements in student performance on assessments like NAPLAN, AMC and PAT testing.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our teachers for their commitment to inspiring students and addressing their diverse learning needs. Looking ahead, we are planning to provide more activity-based learning opportunities, ensuring our students continue to engage and learn in their Maths classes.
As our VCE students prepare for their next steps, we wish them all the best. Their hard work and resilience throughout the year will undoubtedly pave the way for future successes.
Mr Peter Louis Instructional Leader - Mathematics
HUMANITIES
It’s hard to believe another year at Nazareth has come and gone. In Humanities, it has been jampacked. With so many subjects in our learning area, there is always something fun and exciting happening!
It’s been many years since VCE Geography has been studied at Nazareth, and it was wonderful to see a Year 11 class run this year. The students have been able to participate in a variety of field trips, including to the Melbourne Zoo. As Year 12 Geography begins its maiden voyage at Nazareth this year, we look forward to many years of continued study in this subject - and embrace the opportunities this subject offers to the students who choose it as a part of their pathway.
Our Year 10 subjects continue to flourish and help our students to prepare for VCE. In preparation for VCE, the Geography students ventured to Toolangi State Forest on a field trip. Our Business and Enterprise students visited the Queen Victoria Market as part of their studies in entrepreneurship, while our Global Economics and Finance students visited the Dandenong Market as part of their studies in supply and demand. Our Year 10 History class visited the newly renovated Holocaust Museum, with each group having the tremendous privilege of listening to a Holocaust survivor. Listening to this first-hand experience of surviving the Nazi regime is something the students will never forget. Our Year 10 Law and Order students visited Pentridge Prison this year, participating in a ‘Crime and Punishment’ tour of the dreaded H Block, where they had the opportunity to learn about the tough experiences of many of the prisoners who served their time in the infamous prison.
The VCE Humanities subjects continue to provide a wealth of opportunities for students, with Economics students attending the Queen Victoria Market as well as a guided
walk around the city. Business Management students attended the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie, which is always a highlight of the year. They also visited Chadstone to have the opportunity to observe marketing and its importance in retail, while the Year 12 students visited the Yakult factory to complement their study of operations.
Our Year 9 students showed great entrepreneurship and innovation at their Business Expo in April, with the students coming together to work in small groups on a faux business venture. The Business Expo is always a highlight in the school calendar, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their teamwork and creativity. The event attracts a lot of visitors each year, and it was wonderful for the family and friends of the Year 9 students to have the opportunity to come along and see weeks of hard work come to fruition. Congratulations again to Wilters Water, who were the overall winner on the night.
Finally, our Year 7 and 8 students worked hard to continue to build and consolidate their skills in Humanities, so that they can confidently tackle the years ahead.
It’s been a big year in Humanities. As a team, we look forward to new and exciting opportunities ahead. I take the opportunity to sincerely thank the 2024 Humanities staff for all their hard work. I also thank the students of Humanities, for being enthusiastic and willing to embrace the opportunities that Humanities subjects provide.
Ms Donna Watts Instructional Leader - Humanities
HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
2024 has been another big year at Nazareth, marked by new staff, subjects, and experiences.
We welcomed three new staff members: Mr Adam Cooper, Mr Brendan Newcomb, and Ms Gabby Spano, who each brought energy and expertise to our HPE team. Mr. Cooper led the new VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies (OES) for Year 11, where students enjoyed activities like surfing, snorkelling, rock climbing, abseiling, snow camping, and hiking Mt. Sterling. The OES program has been so popular that three full classes are planned for Year 10 in 2025.
Year 7s had a Dance Incursion led by the Nikki Visaj Movement Group, which helped choreograph their assessment piece, as well as a Water Safety Program to prepare them for the summer. Year 8s attended a Surfing Excursion at Smith’s Beach, Phillip Island, learning valuable beach safety skills.
Year 9s engaged in specialised subjects like Soccer, Volleyball, and Basketball, which advanced their skills and showed in their SIS performances. Year 11 and 12 VCE students in Health & Human Development (HHD) and PE have worked hard, with Year 11 HHD students getting hands-on experience through interactive “babies” for a great learning opportunity—thanks to Ms Spano for organizing.
HPE Week was a highlight, beginning with free fruit on Monday and an epic rock wall and inflatable commando course on Wednesday. A new 3 vs 3 basketball competition brought out the competitive spirit, and the week concluded with a memorable dodgeball game where the Staff Team annihilated the self-proclaimed “All-Star” Year 12 team 3-0.
Thank you to all my HPE colleagues and all of the sport staff and SIS team, as well as our maintenance team for their constant support and commitment to Nazareth students. Here’s to another great year!
Mr Andrew Moore Instructional Leader –Health and Physical Education
ENGLISH
2024 has been a year of considerable change and growth, especially in the light of new study designs in VCE subjects, as well as the creation of a new subject, Writing, and the return of an old one, Year 9 Literature.
Year 7 We welcomed new staff to the Year 7 team in 2024, as well as a new approach to the Creative Writing unit. Students were encouraged to read a range of writing examples and then write their own. It was also the last year where Wonder was their set novel. Year 7 in 2025 we will be studying the novel August and Jones.
Year 8 We also welcomed new staff into the Year 8 team. They studied Cop and Robber and then later in the year, the students enjoyed the Poetry in Action incursion.
Year 9 This year witnessed the return of Literature to Year 9 and the students in that class enjoyed Australian Gothic as well as A Midsummer Nights’ Dream. The rest of Year 9 continued to explore short stories with a twist and the novel Between Us, developing their empathy for the plight of refugees.
Year 10 In 2024, it was a new team of teachers that engaged with the course. There was a focus this year on working with students to improve skills in the composition of text responses, argument analyses and writing tasks through explicit teaching of skills related to those text types. The students also enjoyed an interactive production of highlights from Macbeth. The new Writing elective course was enjoyed by a group of students who wrote in a variety of genres.
Year 11 Units 1 and 2 this year saw an explicit focus on working with students on developing their skills in the text types required in Units 3 and 4. It was also the last year of studying A Christmas Carol. Next year, Year 11 will be studying the novel Fahrenheit 451.
Year 12 Our VCE Units 3 and 4 English class have been the first to complete the new Study Design. Like last year’s group, they studied the novel Born a Crime, the memoir of South African comic Trevor Noah, but this time with a critical focus. Their Argument Analysis work focused on texts about social media. They were the first to complete the new Creating Texts area of study, which they completed through using a Personal Journeys framework. They also studied the dystopian novel The Memory Police, which is about a world where random objects disappear and are forgotten by most of society. This was also the second year of the VCE Units 3 and 4 English Language course. The SAC texts in the course this year ranged from a podcast about Taylor Swift, an interview with Tayla Harris and an open letter from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
2025 will be another year of change and revision, as we incorporate the new English Curriculum 2.0 in our Year 7 – 10 curriculum maps. The requirements - especially in relation to explicit skill development - in the new curriculum will provide opportunities for growth, for students and teachers alike.
Mr Mark O’Sullivan Instructional Leader - English
LANGUAGES
“You live a new life for every new language you speak. If you only know one language, you live only once.”
–Czech proverb
It has been yet another busy year in the Languages Learning Area this year. Students have been engaged in diverse learning experiences in both Italian and Japanese, helping to shape both their minds and their perspectives of the world around them.
In Italian, more than 40 Year 7 and 8 students participated in the CIS Junior Italian Poetry Recitation Competition, held annually by the Centre of Italian Studies. Students each learnt a poem in Italian by heart and recited in front of a judge, helping to build their spoken Italian language skills and their confidence. Similarly, a large group of students in Year 9 took part in the long-running annual Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition, where they too recited an Italian poem at The University of Melbourne. This day trip included a visit to Lygon Street, in particular, the famous pasticceria Brunetti. Three of our students - Tessa Di Pilla, Alexandra Surenian and Dinadee Hirimure-Liyanage - were finalists, returning to the university to recite once again.
In Japanese, students were once again treated to an incursion of the Japanese Taiko Drummers, and as well as spectating, students were also invited to try their hand at drumming. Three Year 7 students performed at the Frankston Susono Friendship Association Speech Contest, with two students - Lucas Pham and Annabelle Eimermacher - placing first and second respectively in the Junior Division of the competition. All Year 7 students participated in a Shodoo (Japanese calligraphy) workshop, and they also rehearsed and performed a short play ‘Omusubi Koroin’ for an audience of students and staff, consolidating their spoken Japanese abilities and increasing their overall confidence. Year 8 students did some Washoko (Japanese food) and traditional arts research, and Year 9s undertook work focused on Manga and Anime.
As always, I wish to thank the Languages Learning Area staff so very much for their hard work and dedication in fostering a positive culture around language learning and supporting all students to do their very best, even when sometimes this can be a challenge in language teaching! Thank you to Nibun Sensei, Powell Sensei, Taura Sensei, Prof McMillan and Prof Tancredi, as well as Prof Venturini who has made many a guest appearance to support our team when needed. All the very best to each and every one of our students next year in the continuation of their language learning journeys.

JAPAN TRIP DECEMBER 2023
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
This year, the International Student Program continued to thrive, providing a positive, safe, inclusive and engaging experience for all students.
We remain very proud to welcome students from around the globe into our community. In 2024, we continued the High School Preparation Program (Bridging Program) for International Students as well as Secondary Schooling for International Students studying in Australia.
This year, we had students in all secondary age groups (Years 7-12) from China, Vietnam, Japan, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. Our international cohort took part fully in all student activities throughout the year, including camps, excursions and other school activities which open our students’ eyes to the world beyond our city. Our students participated in all major school events, including Nazareth Day, where some of our students performed in front of the whole school.
The school welcomed students from Shibuya, Japan in March, a successful trip which provided memories for students of both schools that will last forever. We are planning further exchanges with Shibuya in 2025 which is very exciting for the school!
At Nazareth, students are enriched by learning and living in a diverse and vibrant community context that reflects the real world. The exchange of ideas, beliefs and traditions between local and international students develops cultural empathy and development of the mutual respect and understanding needed to live successfully in our interconnected world. We love knowing that countless bonds of friendship across the world that still flourish today were formed at Nazareth.
We would like to thank our wonderful host families who support the International Program by providing welcoming and loving homes to our students. The program could not run without our valued community members. We wish our departing students a safe and happy return trip home and the very best for their future. We look forward to working with our continuing students in 2025, another year in which international students will have the opportunity to succeed –they are capable of anything.

SCIENCE
What a great year for the Science Team!
Year 12 Physics students visited Luna Park to complete their SAC for the prompt, “How do physicists explain motion in two dimensions?” The day was a fantastic success, with students having the opportunity to experience both horizontal and vertical centripetal force firsthand. They also got to feel what it’s like to be in a near-freefall state, making the physics principles they study come to life in an exciting, real-world context.
Meanwhile, Year 12 Psychology students had a visit from an expert in June who works in a sleep lab, complementing their studies on sleep. The expert demonstrated some of the high-tech equipment used to monitor and analyse sleep, giving students a fascinating insight into the science behind sleep research.
Year 7 students also had a memorable experience when Wild Action brought native Australian animals to their school. Students were able to touch and handle a variety of creatures, with the highlight being the adorable wallaby joey, which stole the show. Year 7s also enjoyed the Fantastic Plastics incursion, where learned about recycling plastics.
In other exciting science activities, Year 10 Mission to Mars students launched rockets they had designed and built themselves. This hands-on activity helped them apply their learning about aerodynamics and space exploration in a fun and engaging way.
Year 8 students took their scientific curiosity to the next level by dissecting eyes and hearts, while Year 9 students tackled the challenge of sheep brain dissections, gaining a deeper understanding of anatomy and biology.
Students from Year 7 to Year 9 participated in the prestigious ICAS exams and the Junior Science Olympiad, testing their skills and knowledge in a competitive environment.
Finally, Grade 5 students from local primary schools joined us for our Taster Days, where they had the opportunity to enjoy a range of fun and interactive experiments, including the famous Elephant’s Toothpaste demonstration, which never fails to impress!
The Performing Arts Faculty has experienced significant growth in student interest across subject selections, ensemble participation, and student leadership.
As 2023 drew to a close, we bid farewell to Ms. Sarah Elijah, who managed the Seussical production. We also welcomed Ms. Tamzyn Alexander to the team in 2024, a provisional teacher in Drama and Music. Ms. Alexander also serves as an Instrumental Voice teacher, adding a wealth of experience to our faculty.
This year, the faculty continued to provide many opportunities for students to engage in the arts at all year levels. Year 7 students enjoyed the annual Brass Bedlam incursion during Fabulous February, an interactive event designed to introduce them to brass instruments. The incursion helped integrate new students into the College, while also promoting the instrumental music program and increasing concert band enrolment.
In collaboration with the City of Greater Dandenong Youth’s office and PUSH, the Performing Arts Faculty hosted lunchtime concerts in the newly established Amphitheatre during Term 1. These events were a success, offering students the chance to showcase their talents and explore future collaboration opportunities. It’s been exciting to see a growing number of students participating in music rehearsals, joining new or existing ensembles, and creating choreography for the Auditorium stage.
Our faculty was also involved in several major events, including the Opening Mass, Assumption, Nazareth Day Mass, the Annual Music Camp at Don Bosco, Drama Incursion, Talent Quest, and the Showcase Concert. I’m proud to represent the Performing Arts across the College and to work with teams from Faith and Mission, Technologies, Arts, and Visual Arts. A special thank you to Mr. Victor Brusco for his assistance in coordinating the Nazareth Talent Quest, as well as the teachers and staff who served as judges.
On behalf of the Performing Arts Faculty, I’d like to congratulate the 2024 Nazareth’s Got Talent winners: Giuliana Artho (Year 8) and Anthony Nguyen (Year 11), and thank all the performers who participated.
2024 has also seen growth in our instrumental music program, with more students taking up instruments, either for personal growth or to pursue their passion for music. This increase in enrolments has led to the reopening of the College Recording Studio. The Studio provides a creative space for students to collaborate, compose, and develop their skills.
We are also excited for the 2025 College Production, Disney’s High School Musical, and the upcoming 40th Anniversary celebrations. The future is bright for the Performing Arts Faculty, and we are excited to continue fostering a passion for the arts among our students.

VISUAL ARTS
What an engaging year it has been for the Visual Arts Learning Area. For the first time in a long while, Visual Arts has become its own Learning Area.
This has provided an opportunity for focus and to identify areas of growth for our staff and students. As part of this Learning Area this year, students have been privileged to study Visual Arts, Art Making and Exhibiting, Digital Art, Media and Visual Communication Design.
Our students demonstrated excellence and represented the school with pride at numerous events and excursions throughout the year. We had four students’ works selected and presented at the annual MACS Art Show in March. Additionally, we had 30 excellent works selected and displayed at the SIS Art Exhibition, which celebrated our students’ talents. Congratulations to all students who had works in these exhibitions. Furthermore, stepping out of the classroom, our VCE and Year 10 Art Making and Exhibiting students visited the NGV to see priceless pieces of works and gain inspiration for their folios and art pieces. Also, the Year 9 Digital Art students were provided the opportunity to attend ACMI to further their knowledge of animation which they were covering in class at the time. These experiences continue to be valuable for our students as it enables them to experience the grandeur of various works beyond the screen or a printout.
As is tradition, Nazareth College held its annual Showcase event which featured the many talents that our students possess in the areas of Performing Arts, Technology and Visual Arts. It was open to families, friends, and the wider community, including our local Fire Brigade for the first time! The event itself was exciting, with over two hundred and fifty works on display from all our subjects, as well as our Technology and Performing Arts subjects, across all different year levels. There were animations, ceramics, drawings, folios, models, movie posters, paintings, photographs, prints, and video essays. Well done to all students who had pieces on display.
One of the goals for this year has been to expand the opportunities in the Visual Arts Learning Area. I am proud to announce that from next year, students in Year 10 will be able to study Concept Art and Digital Rendering (CanDR). This brand-new subject will extend upon Year 9 Digital Art and provide students with an additional pathway into the Art Making and Exhibiting and/or Visual Communication Design subjects at VCE level. Students will be taught digital techniques and processes used in creative fields to conceptualise concept art and produce believable renders of products and buildings. We look forward to proposing additional Visual Arts subjects in 2025 for study in 2026 to engage our students creatively and meet the needs of our growing school.
Additionally, it has been a year of expansion for our staff team. This year we were pleased to welcome Janine Stockdale as our new VCE Media teacher and Elizabeth “Bessie” Murphy as our new Visual Arts and Technology Assistant. Additionally, we welcomed back Peter Nathan as a Media teacher and Patsy Furlong as our Visual Arts and Technology Assistant. All four staff members have become a positive part of the Visual Arts team and have contributed greatly to the successful learning and experiences of our students in the Visual Arts Learning Area.
It goes without saying that this year would not have been possible without the efforts and endeavours of the Visual Arts staff. They have put in a phenomenal amount of time and effort to create memorable experiences and opportunities for our students to thrive and enjoy our subjects. Thank you! I look forward to seeing and experiencing what we will contribute as a team for next year!
Continue to be visually creative!

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
This year has been a transformative one for the Digital Technology team, highlighted by the opening of the Maker Space Room and significant investments in new technologies.
A key addition to the curriculum was the introduction of a Year 10 elective called Mechatronics, building upon the foundation laid in the Year 9 Robotics elective.
Robotics: In the Year 9 Robotics elective, students gained hands-on experience in mechanical and software engineering. They followed the Engineering Design Process to create various mechanical systems, including claws, pulleys, and drive trains. Their main project involved programming robots to complete a series of tasks in a competitive game, utilising colour and distance sensors for autonomous decision-making.
Mechatronics: Transitioning to Year 10, students engaged with VEX V5 robots, which required a focus on safety measures such as wearing safety glasses during operation. They created safety posters outlining precautions when using gears and levers. Students learned about gear ratios and programming autonomous routines using VEX block programming, successfully moving objects and even drawing their initials with their robots.
Micro:bits and Project Management: A new unit for Year 7 students introduced them to micro:bit devices through open-ended activities that fostered project management skills. Students tackled real-world challenges using Design Thinking, identifying problems to solve with the micro:bit and creating prototypes using various materials. Their presentations showcased innovative projects, including a computer trouble-shooter and a fragrance discount generator.
Computer Science: The Year 9 Digital Game Development elective introduced students to Python programming by creating text adventure games, developing skills in variables and conditional statements. Their second project focused on object-oriented programming, enhancing their ability to animate and implement game functions.
3D Printing: With the addition of six 3D printers, Year 8 students explored 3D using OnShape and printed custom key rings. In Year 9 Design Technology, students designed moving projects, like walking ducks and robots, utilising simple electronics and 3D printed components.
eSports Club: The eSports Club continued to thrive, providing a social space for students to enjoy Nintendo games. This year culminated in the inaugural Nazareth College eSports Cup, fostering school-wide excitement and participation, with expectations for even greater engagement next year.

LEARNING DIVERSITY & ENGAGEMENT
We were pleased to welcome ten new staff members to our team this year: Hansa Parashar, Roshni Shakeeb, Priyanka Saha, Melissa Lot, Claire Duckett, Gabriella Brusco, Tiffany Blake, Kajal Varshney, Elijah Brasher, and Madonna Richardson.
The Learning Diversity Team has worked hard this year to support both our teachers in the classroom and our students with their learning. It was an honour to be awarded ‘Victorian Team Finalist’ for the Australian Teacher Aide Awards this year. Our team was recognised for its significant contribution to student learning and wellbeing, collaboration, and improving professional practice. Well done to all!
Our growing team works together to develop students’ unique strengths. We support students in their access to the curriculum so that they can achieve their learning and life goals. It has been my pleasure to work with such a dedicated, supportive and caring team this year.
It has been terrific to support our students both in and out of the classroom. We cherish every student for their individuality and treasure the relationships we form with them over their time at Nazareth College.
We look forward to continuing our work in partnership with teachers, students, and families at Nazareth next year.
Ms Emma Wray Instructional Leader –Learning Diversity & Engagement
APPLIED LEARNING
2024 has been significant in that the VCE-VM (Vocational Major) now incorporates Year 12 studies. We have had a record number of students enrolled in School-based Apprenticeships, with students happily employed two days a week.
Our program encourages students to explore their future pathways in any field that interests them. Structured work placement once a week allows students to make informed decisions about whether the career is definitely worth pursuing, for there is nothing like settling into the daily grind of work to understand what tasks employees typically do, and the expectations of companies. Hence, our VCE – VM students undertake a diverse range of VET (Vocational Education & Training) courses.
Our LEAP (Learning Excellence through Applied Pathways) students in Year 10 have been gently introduced to our program through their enrolment in a half day VET course, and their engagement in the Community Action subject. LEAP students have completed many hands-on projects over the year and have continued Nazareth’s commitment to investigating local walking trails, assessing their suitability and key features.
On a Wednesday, many of our students were able to study their VET course in the Joseph Centre. A warm buzz has filled this purpose-built learning centre, with aspiring beauticians, hairdressers, barbers, and business administrators joining together from schools across the southeast to develop the knowledge and skills required for these careers. Our VET trainers, Natalie, Vicky and Mitch, have captured their students’ attention and engaged them in dynamic learning, which has been a joy to experience. Adventures to the 1000 Steps, travelling on unfamiliar public transport lines, shopping purposefully and within a budget, working on projects including garden construction, fundraising barbeques, the creation of colourful bottle top art murals, the Mother’s Day Stall, running Nazareth Day activities, and the community endeavours in Term 4, have intertwined with the theoretical components of VCE VM and Year 10 studies. Not forgetting indoor plant management, aquarium care, and the learning of life skills such as cooking,
dishwashing, how to use a washing machine, and the art of folding clothes, there has been ongoing coaching, demonstration and fun had along the way by all!
2024 marks a 15-year partnership between Nazareth College and SCOPE Australia’s Southern Balloon Football League. When a Memorandum of Understanding was drawn up all those years ago, the goal was to create a sustainable partnership, and that it continues to be. For 20 weeks a year, our Year 11 and 12 VMers have supported this competitive, inclusive wheelchair sport, taking responsibility for team management, fixtures, scoring, timekeeping, pack up of equipment, and umpiring. Through carrying out these official duties, our young people have formed connections with adults who live life with disabilities, learning so much about themselves, life opportunities and what they take for granted. Students’ engagement with players, support workers, and family members has helped them build confidence, communication skills, and compassion for others in the community. Perceiving people with a disability as simply individuals like themselves has seen a shift in students’ views of respect, and that small gestures can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
We wish our Year 12s all the best for their future adult lives. They have shared their stories, entertained us, drawn us to laughter and tears, and made us proud of the people they have become. Once a Nazareth student, always a Nazarene, and we hope that, when settled in employment, our VMers will return to Nazareth with structured work placement and employment offers, or as mentors and guest speakers to the next generation of applied learners.
None of the above achievements could be possible without a great team of staff in the Joseph Centre; Elena Flodstrom, Theresa Lochery, Barb Murphy, Mary Green, Naomi Pernar, Maria Hatzis, Sue Formanek, Laura Langmead, Rod Diaz, David Lawrence, and Justin Duckett, all of whom model creativity, enthusiasm, adaptability, and kind- heartedness.
Behind the scenes, we would like to acknowledge the support staff who make applied learning possible; Tom Hjorth, Renee Brash, Mark Sidoti, and Julie Carlin.
Ms Caitlin Mackay Applied Learning Coordinator
CAREERS
The Careers Team at Nazareth has been dedicated to guiding students on their individual paths to success.
Whether students know their future goals or are still exploring, the team helps everyone navigate their journey. Success is different for everyone—some aim for employment right away, while others pursue tertiary studies first. This year has been all about helping students find their direction.
Destination Data
In 2023, each Year 12 student had an interview with Elena to discuss post-school plans. As a result, the entire cohort found pathways to begin in 2024. Most (81%) enrolled in tertiary institutions, 1% started apprenticeships, 3% took gap years, and the rest entered the workforce. Tertiary education remains popular, with many students joining Monash, RMIT, Swinburne, and Deakin—institutions that have been top choices for a decade.
New Team Member
Theresa Lochery joined Nazareth this year, bringing extensive experience in VCE and Careers. She quickly connected with students, keeping them updated through weekly newsletters and the College Careers website. Her enthusiasm for career development is contagious!
Excursions, Presentations, Interviews, and Career Tools
Years 10-12 students attended various Careers Expos to explore education and job opportunities. Presentations on scholarships, job options, and safety at work provided further insights. All Year 10-12 students were enrolled on the Career Tools website, where they can complete selfpaced modules to understand their skills, build resumes, and craft cover letters.
College Careers and Subject Expo
The Careers and Subject Selection Expo was a highlight, attended by students, caregivers, and various exhibitors from tertiary institutions and employment services. Learning area staff and leaders provided information on subject choices for Year 10 and beyond. The energy was fantastic, with exhibitors noting the students’ curiosity and proactive approach—an essential step in planning for the future.
Year 10 Careers Program
A new addition to the curriculum, the Year 10 Careers Program, helps students explore their strengths, understand career interests, and prepare for work experience. This program gave students a solid foundation, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed during Work Experience week. Students explored a range of industries, giving them real-world insight and a rewarding experience.
Operational Salon and Beauty Room
This year, Nazareth launched VET subjects in beauty services on campus. Students completed Certificates II in Salon Assistance and Retail Cosmetics, gaining hands-on experience. They worked in a dedicated salon room, learning skincare and make-up techniques from professionals. A highlight was an in-service from ‘Essence’ cosmetics, where students learned techniques and received a makeup goody bag. In 2025, Nazareth will offer Certificate III in Beauty Services, covering skills like manicures, waxing, and lash extensions, all taught by Inspiring Beauty in Boronia.
VET Business
This year also saw the introduction of VET Business, led by Mr. Mitchel Berryman, who has inspired students’ interest in business. The class included external students and will expand next year.
We wish every student success in their journey and hope the foundations built at Nazareth will support their dreams and ambitions. See you in 2025!

RESOURCE CENTRE
The Resource Centre has continued to be a vibrant hub where many students gather each day.
Our Library Ambassador Program has gone from strength to strength in 2024, with an army of students happy to provide customer service to their peers. We are incredibly grateful that we have so many generous students who volunteer their time to assist on the circulation desk and to restock shelves.
Book Week celebrations were a highlight of the year, with Learning Support Officer Maria Hatzis transforming our reading lounge into a magical ‘Secret Garden’ to mark the theme ‘Reading is Magic.’ Our students responded very positively to having such a beautiful space in which to read and relax. This year’s Book Week ‘Manga Art’ competition was our most successful yet, with talented students submitting their original hand-drawn and digital art. The major prize winners were Masa Basic and Camellia Chi.
The Wide Reading program once again ran throughout the year, with Year 7 and 8 classes participating in lessons led by Ms Douglass and Ms Mackay. This is a great opportunity to showcase new acquisitions and to direct students to reading material that they will enjoy. There have been some very impressive readers who have devoured more than 3 million words each this year. Each word is a point earned, as Houses compete to win the coveted House Reading Cup!
The SIS ‘Book in a Day’ competition took place once again. This year our team was comprised of five Year 7 students and three Year 8 students who attended writing and illustrating workshops with professional authors and illustrators. Our 2023 team members, Tori and Bella, mentored the team leading up to the competition, giving them lots of tips to help them bring their best to the competition. Our wonderful team worked beautifully together to plan, write, and illustrate their 4000-to-6000word novella, producing a fabulous piece titled Submerged
Secrets. To our absolute delight, on Presentation Day, the Nazareth team was awarded 4th place amongst a field of 15 schools, winning $100 worth of books for the Resource Centre from the competition sponsor, Campion Education. We end the year once again incredibly grateful for our two Library Technicians, Mrs Vyvette Baptist, and Ms Joanna Rogers, and the friendly students who contribute to the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere of this special space.

YEAR 7 CAMP
Year 7 camp was an unforgettable experience, packed with exciting activities, great food, and lasting memories. Here are the highlights!
We started with the drop slide—a steep metal slide where you’d hang onto a bar, then let go and slide down, which delivered an instant adrenaline rush! Next, we tried the dual flying fox, where we paired up, launched off together, and even tried tricks like going upside down. Dinner that night was delicious.
Day two was all about survival skills. We had a billabong competition to see who could boil water the fastest. Even though my team came third, it was a blast. Then, we gathered sticks and dried grass to build a campfire and cook our afternoon tea and lunch—dough and nachos. Free time was spent in endless games of gaga ball, with Mr Newcomb as our enthusiastic referee.
The obstacle course was another highlight, where we paired up for support through various challenges, including two flying foxes. On the last day, though sad to leave, we were excited for the final climbing activity. Each climber was supported by four spotters, and we used commands like “On climb” and “Spotter ready” to stay safe.
This camp was full of fun, teamwork, and adventure—an experience we’ll always remember and hope to have again!

YEAR 9 CAMP
CHISHOLM HOUSE
At the end of 2023, I was asked if I would consider stepping into the role of Head of House for Chisholm.
Many far more practiced and experienced colleagues have filled the Head of House position before me, so it was with some trepidation that I accepted the post. This year has brought many challenges, much learning, and some of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a teacher. This is thanks to the students and staff of Chisholm House and the friendliness that our school cultivates.
We welcomed our Year 7 students and other new students to the College and to the House. Year 7 Camp saw many students find their feet, and each student returned to school having formed many great friendships through their experiences. Year 9 Camp in the very first week of term also afforded our students many fantastic experiences. Chisholm was well-represented in the House Swimming and CrossCountry events.
Our Chisholm students were frequently engaged in sports, music, camps and opportunities for growth and success. We also elected our House Leaders and welcomed them into their new positions.
Semester Two started with a very busy Term 3. The House Athletics Carnival was a bright spot. Student participation was up, and with some amazing athleticism, Chisholm won the trophy. This was the first time since 2000 that Chisholm has prevailed in athletics.
As the year draws to a close, I am constantly reminded of the generosity of spirit our students possess and the sheer amount of goodwill that can be found within our school. People at Nazareth are friendly and supportive. We must never lose sight of how exceptionally lucky we are to have a community that is always inviting us in and welcoming us to be known.
This is my final year at Nazareth. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn alongside the students and become a better teacher in a community that sets you up to
thrive. I hope that I have been of assistance to the students and families of Chisholm House. I want to thank every one of you - every Pastoral Teacher, family member, and student of Chisholm House for your wonderful support this year. Nazareth College and Chisholm House will always hold a special place in my heart. I have truly loved working with all of you and serving you as your Head of House.
Throughout our time at Nazareth, Chisholm House has always stood out from any other House. Whether we were in the top two or dead last of a House competition, we always worked well as a team. Everyone that we have met over the years has been so unique, with different backgrounds and personalities. Chisholm has always offered a place for everyone – whether in academics, sport or the creative arts. Chisholm has it all.
This year, Chisholm proudly took home the gold in the House Athletics Carnival, and we believe we truly deserved it. It was amazing to see the sheer number of students who participated with such passion for the House, making the victory all the more meaningful.
With the change of Head of House from Ms Hughes to Mr Indge, we feel Mr Indge has continued the good work that came before him and has done an amazing job in supporting our House and leading our Chisholm pastoral staff. The pastoral teachers have done an excellent job in organising events, pizza parties and keeping our house morale high, which has led to our success as a House this year.
As the new Chisholm captain takes over, we both wish Genevieve the very best, and we know that Chisholm will continue to be an amazing House.

This year’s school motto, “Let your light shine upon others”, calls on us to recognise and share our unique skills and qualities to enrich those around us.
At the start of the year, I asked Knox House to reflect on this and set a challenge: “Be the difference that makes a difference.” This idea is inspired by a book I read at university that left a lasting impact on me.
The author, Kurt Vonnegut, tells a story from his youth. At fifteen, he worked one summer on an archaeological dig and shared his interests—music, theatre, and art—with an archaeologist. Vonnegut downplayed his skills, saying, “Oh no, I’m not good at any of them.” The archaeologist responded, “I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. You’ve got all these wonderful experiences, and they teach you things and make you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.”
This story perfectly illustrates the message of “letting our light shine” and “making a difference by being different.” I encourage each student to embrace this philosophy—try new things, take risks, and get involved. Through participation, we develop skills, gain confidence, and contribute to our community, even if we’re not experts. Every effort adds something valuable to both the individual and our school culture.
An essential part of this journey is being kind and mindful of others. At this year’s Nazareth Day Mass, we were encouraged to make one positive action a day. Even small acts of kindness multiply quickly, building a community where everyone feels valued. When we persist in small, positive actions, we contribute to a culture where everyone’s light shines a little brighter.
This approach doesn’t only enhance individuals; it also strengthens our community. At Knox, our culture is one where people feel empowered to try new things and supported in their efforts, knowing that their contribution matters.
I want to thank our Knox Pastoral Teachers for fostering this supportive environment each day. Their unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement allow students to feel empowered and build resilience. They are instrumental in creating a community where students can grow.
Finally, I’d like to thank our Knox Captains for their enduring support, positivity, and exemplary conduct. You have inspired me through your example and have set the standard for your peers and the House.
Per Nobis, Opus Dei. God bless,
The last six years at Nazareth have been a true thrill ride, and there was no better way to spend it other than by being Knoxians. Knox House has been like a home to us, and we could not be more grateful for all the time spent here.
From the beginning of Year 7 through to now, we have discovered ourselves as individuals through different opportunities that this school offers – such as sports, the arts, science, mathematics, and leadership. It has been a true blessing to experience these opportunities throughout our high school journey.
2024 has been an incredible journey for our House and we thank everyone who gave it their best at all of the house competitions. Although we didn’t win any Inter-House events, we still had a great time bonding with each other and showing off our House spirit as proud members of Knox.
We would also like to thank our 2024 Pastoral Teachers for their assistance and advice through the hardships of school and for their constant care, empathy, support and respect. The key to the brilliance and the feeling of home in Knox has been Head of House; Mr Diaz. He has been there to help guide us as a House to be something better in the future, by instilling values of integrity, perseverance, empathy, and respect in everyone. On behalf of Knox House, thank you for your hard work, contributions, and constant dedication to your students.
It has been a joy leading all of you and we stand in full confidence that the succeeding captains Tori and Gabi will be an amazing team to help grow Knox and help it become a House of joy, support, and respect for everyone. The majestic purple of Knox and all the brilliant students who live in this abode bring us great pride and we have loved every moment of our lives in Knox House.
To the Year 12s of Knox; it has been a wonderful journey together, and we wish you all the best in your future. We know that each of you, as the amazing and talented people that you are, will live a life of joy and success, which each of you deserve.
Finally, we will never forget our motto and will always live by it:
“Per nobis, opus dei” - Through us, God’s work.

Nazareth Day to be awarded the House Spirit award, gaining the most House Points over 2024.
I would like to thank our MacKillop Pastoral team. They were nothing short of amazing in their work with our students this year. They gave our students the best possible chance to succeed in their endeavours. The pastoral care shown to these students allowed them to shine.
What a busy year! 2024 came with a lot of changes to Mackillop. We have worked with Mr Cowan and Ms Mackay to help organise our Athletics and Swimming Carnivals and Naz Day events to the best of our ability.
KNOX HOUSE REPORT
MacKILLOP HOUSE
As the 2024 school year finishes, we celebrate our journey, spirit, and unity within the MacKillop House.
As Mr Brusco frequently quoted and lives up to, “Never see a need without doing something about it”. Our MacKillop family found a way to create a home for all who walked through our doors, and this allowed for all students to thrive.
As we started the year, we welcomed 30 new Year 7 students. Their nervous energy was understandable, making the jump from primary school to secondary school. After camp, we quickly saw the nerves disappear, new friendships emerge, and they started enjoying all that Nazareth has to offer.
Our Year 9s settled in as a Year level and spent time together at the Anglesea Discovery Camp. This brought in the new year with some sleepless nights and days full of activity. We saw the emergence of new skills, and new adventures were had.
As our Year 7s and 9s were off enjoying themselves at different locations, our Year 11s and 12s were settling into their year of VCE or VCE VM. With the addition of more VET courses being run at the College, we saw the ability for students to be able to pursue further pathways that help them into the future.
Further to our pathway for our Year 11s and 12s, we saw our Year 10s head off on work experience and gain a valuable insight into what their working future could look like. It gave them a taste of the work life that lay ahead for them at the end of their schooling journey.
We couldn’t leave out the amazing sporting achievements of all our MacKillop students. In the Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals, we placed first and then in the Athletics event we came a valiant second to Chisholm. Our efforts at Swimming and Cross Country exemplified that team spirit, when we had so many MacKillop students give it their best shot in the hope of team success. We were delighted on
With our shared team effort across the whole House, MacKillop had many wins this year from Swimming Carnival to Cross Country to House Spirit. With the great camaraderie we experienced together as a House, we came out on top. We have achieved the trifecta with support and the efforts of the MacKillop students. With the shared efforts of the MacKillop Pastoral Teachers, students have been decorated with red bows and face paint during the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. MacKillop students demonstrated resilience to push on amidst change and uncertainty throughout the school year. It was always good to know that I had a supportive Pastoral Teacher who had my back and best of luck to our incoming leaders Abbie, Jenann and Jordan.
The dragon symbolises power, wisdom, and strength— qualities we as a House have proudly displayed. By winning the House Cup for the second year in a row, we’ve shown our resilience and determination to overcome challenges. Our motto, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” inspired by Mary MacKillop, speaks to the compassion and wisdom of every MacKillop House member. Winning the House Spirit Award and seeing so many participate in Carnivals are further testaments to why we stand where we are today.
To our Year 7s who gave their all during their first year of secondary school; thank you. You made the difference between keeping the Cup and losing it. And to every MacKillop member who tried something new this year, your contributions have strengthened our House and allowed you to grow personally.
We also thank the MacKillop Pastoral Teachers for their constant support, positivity, and reminders to live with faith, wisdom, and knowledge. Without them, Mackillop wouldn’t feel like the close-knit family it is today.
Finally, heartfelt thanks to Mr Cowan, in his first year as Head of House for MacKillop. Mr Cowan has been a true example of energy, empathy, and integrity, instilling these values in each of us. He has guided us through the complexities of school life, paving the way for us to become our best selves now and in the future.

MANNIX
KNOX HOUSE REPORT MacKILLOP HOUSE REPORT
In 2024, our Mannix Warriors proved how choosing to live with courage, conviction, and dedication led to yet another amazing year for our Mannix family.
From welcoming our new Year 7s as they entered our doors for the first time, to farewelling our Year 12s walking through our green foyer for the last time, our community has stood as one. Aspiring to make our House one to be proud to be a part of has been achieved on so many levels within our walls and I am honoured to call Mannix our home.
Team success was achieved in placing in the top three in almost all House sporting events. Individual success was seen in the many high-achieving academic, arts, and social justice awards our Mannix students received. And House success, perhaps the most important of all, was achieved in creating the safest, strongest, and most special of communities.
Victories cannot be attained alone, so I thank all our Mannix Year Level House Leaders who represented us so courageously throughout the year. You have made our House a better place. I pay special tribute to our Year 12 House Captains, Krystal Leah and Lisa Vu, for being upstanding leaders and representing us with honour.
The Mannix community would not be complete without our amazing Pastoral Teachers, I extend my thanks, for supporting me and our students every day. From implementing our “Friendly Fridays”, to playing games when needed, all the way through to taking the time to check in on those that may need it – no act has been too small to make an impact.
To our parents and families, you are just as much a part of our community. For those that remain on the journey with us, may the Mannix spirit continue to shine its light on you. To those leaving us, especially our graduating Class of 2024, I hope that you remain a warrior in every aspect of your life.
As always, it has been a privilege and a joy to be the Mannix
Head of House. I am so proud of all my Mannix Warriors for all they have achieved this year, and I look forward to what I am sure will be another year of cherished memories filled with happiness, growth, and success in 2025.
Representing Mannix in 2024 has been an incredible honour. Working with our Head of House, Miss Kappas, our fantastic Pastoral Teachers, and our younger student leaders has been a true pleasure, and for that, we want to say thank you. Most importantly, we thank every one of you in Mannix who has contributed to building this inclusive and amazing House!
As our Year 12 journey ends, it breaks our hearts to realise we won’t be walking into the C1 block every morning, chatting with friends, or mingling with other Pastoral Groups to play games. These final school activities and memories are ones we will cherish forever. This year, we proudly secured 4th place in the Swimming Carnival, 2nd in Cross Country, and 3rd in the House Athletics Carnival. We truly believe that every Mannix member is striving to be their best! With the House Points System in place, we encourage you to keep joining in every school activity to uphold the Mannix spirit and make the most of your school experience—even though we won’t be here to see it. We know you’ll keep the momentum going!
We are confident that the 2025 Mannix House Leaders— Caitlin, Luca, and Julia—will continue leading Mannix with dedication and enthusiasm, making it the wonderful House and family it is. Being part of the Mannix community has been a joy, and though we’re sad to step away, we know you will keep showing courage, conviction, and dedication in all you do, both during school and beyond. Go Mannix!!

HOUSE REPORT KNOX HOUSE REPORT
As my first year at Nazareth College and as McAuley Head of House draws to a close, I am truly honoured to be part of such an amazing group of young people and staff alike.
We have welcomed many new staff and students throughout the year, and I firmly believe that this is a testament to the reputation Nazareth College has within the community as the preferred choice for secondary education. It has been a year of growth, learning, and collaboration, not just for our students, but also for me and the entire team of educators and staff.
I acknowledge the incredible support and dedication of the McAuley Pastoral teachers, Mrs Joy Singh, Mr Roland Khayat, Mr Philip Ryan, Mrs Sherene Rozario, Miss Tamzyn Alexander and Miss Tessa Houlihan. We have worked as a team to ensure that our students had the best possible learning environment. From working through academic challenges to providing emotional support, each member of the House has been instrumental in shaping a successful year.
McAuley students were heavily involved in events such as the Winter Sleepout, Soup for Winter, Cross Country, and various athletics and SIS events just to name a few. They have also excelled in academic achievements, personal growth, or leadership in the school community.
A big thank you to our House Captains Emma Sidea and Fayez Sayegh. Your enthusiasm and ‘can do’ attitude have been instrumental in the functioning of various House events. Your support and welcoming of the current Year 7 cohort ensured a smooth transition for our new members of the College into the uncharted waters of secondary education.
There wouldn’t be any student success without the unwavering support of parents and guardians; thank you for welcoming me and supporting your children this year. Your involvement in your children’s education has been crucial
in building the foundation of trust and communication that we’ve relied on throughout the year.
To our graduating Year 12 McAuley cohort; as you move into the next exciting chapter of your lives, we would like to take a moment to wish you all the best. Good luck with the path you choose and we hope that you look back on your schooling at Nazareth College with fond memories. Embrace all the opportunities life has to offer, stay true, and know that while we say goodbye, McAuley House is cheering you on!
I look ahead in anticipation of another huge year in 2025, when we will celebrate 40 years of Nazareth College.
It was an honor to represent McAuley House as House Captains in 2024. While we didn’t win any carnivals this year, the experience taught us so much about leadership, communication, and compassion.
We’ve been fortunate to work with our Head of House, Ms Spano, whose dedication has made McAuley House a place that pushes us to be our best. We’re grateful for this experience at Nazareth and for our supportive Pastoral Teachers who uplifted us every day.
A huge thank you to the younger leaders who helped organise events like the Winter Appeal, Nazareth Day, and the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. To those considering leadership next year—go for it! It’s a fantastic opportunity for personal growth and skill building.
Best of luck to all Year 12s, and to next year’s McAuley House Captains—Chantelle, Sienna and Victoria, we wish you every success!

McCORMACK HOUSE REPORT
McCormack Leaders
L to R: Georgia Starfas, Kohulan Yoganathan, Isabella Samuel, Ms Hayley McMillan
What an incredible year 2024 has been for McCormack House! We’ve had the joy of welcoming new students from a wide range of schools and backgrounds, and each of them has enriched the vibrant spirit of McCormack.
Our year began on a high note with the Year 9 adventures at Anglesea, where students bonded over surfing, beach activities, and, most importantly, meaningful connections with one another.
Our Year 7s embarked on a fun-filled adventure to Valley Homestead near Myrtleford. For three days, they enjoyed activities and created memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. The House Cross-Country was another highlight. Although we didn’t claim the top prize, it was a fantastic day spent outdoors in the sunshine, enjoying the spirit of competition and camaraderie.
Our Year 10s had the exciting opportunity to experience the professional world through a week-long Work Experience Program. Many of them enjoyed a taste of working life, though they were happy to return to the familiar routine and shorter hours of school. The House Athletics Carnival added some excitement to winter, and though it didn’t yield as many wins as in past years, our students showed remarkable resilience and determination. In McCormack, we know that every moment matters - the friendships we make, the lessons we learn, and the spirit we build together.
Throughout the year, McCormack House has been actively involved in information evenings, masses, assemblies, reflection days, and various fundraising events. Each of these experiences has been a testament to the strong community we share. At our House Swimming Carnival, it was wonderful to see so many people jump in and give their all, celebrating both participation and some outstanding achievements!
In academics, our students have truly excelled. Their dedication to learning has been inspiring, with each of them embracing challenges, celebrating their achievements, and persevering through adversity. These experiences have helped them grow not only as students but as confident, capable individuals.
A huge thank you goes out to our Pastoral Teachers, House Captains and Student House Leaders, who have done an outstanding job guiding the students of McCormack this year. Their dedication and passion have truly made a difference.
Congratulations on a spectacular year, McCormack House! Here’s to all the successes ahead - keep shining!
As Year 12 House Leaders, this year has been full-on! Balancing studies and leadership responsibilities kept us busy, but it’s been so rewarding. We proudly represented McCormack House at school assemblies and events, working closely with Ms McMillan and Mr Stewart. A big part of our role was keeping everyone updated on school happenings and reminding our House of the rules that help keep our community strong.
One of the best parts has been collaborating with the younger McCormack leaders from Years 7–11 at our fortnightly meetings. Huge thanks to everyone who stepped up this year, helping organise events like the Winter Appeal, Naz Day, and the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. You all brought so much energy!
To anyone considering leadership next year—go for it! It’s an amazing opportunity for personal growth and skill building. As we wrap up our Year 12 journey, it’s bittersweet to say goodbye.
We’re confident that the 2025 McCormack House Leader –Layla - will lead with enthusiasm and keep McCormack House thriving. To everyone in McCormack, keep showing courage, conviction, and dedication.

SIS WEEKLY SPORT
The year 2024 has been the most successful year for SIS Weekly Sport at Nazareth, with an incredible 30 teams formed and over 500 students participating. It’s inspiring to see so many of our students embracing the opportunity to represent Nazareth in competitions against schools across the Southern region.
AFL witnessed record participation this year, culminating in multiple flags—a remarkable achievement for our program. Basketball continues to be a favorite among our students, with eight teams actively competing throughout the year. Additionally, our new tennis courts have been put to great use, with students training weekly in preparation for SIS events.
Soccer remains one of the most favoured sports at Nazareth. Many of our students compete at high levels outside of school, and the morning SOE training sessions have been well-attended. This year marked one of our most successful seasons in soccer, showcasing the talent and dedication of our athletes.
Volleyball has also captured the enthusiasm of our students, with regular training sessions helping players sharpen their skills for the upcoming Volleyball Cup at the end of the year.
Congratulations to Our Premier Teams!
We are proud to announce the following teams that finished as Premiers and brought home pennants this year:
Senior Girls Volleyball – Coached by Hayley McMillan
Junior Girls Soccer – Coached by Gabriella Spano
Junior Boys Soccer – Coached by Antigone Kappas

A special thank you goes to our coaches and to Luke Georgakopoulos (Sports Assistant) for his invaluable contributions—scheduling weekly sports, organising uniforms and equipment, and dedicating his lunchtime to attend games.
Lastly, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to every student who participated in SIS Sport this year. Your enthusiasm and dedication have made this competition truly enjoyable, and we commend you for showing up each week. Here’s to even more success in the future!

AEROBICS
The Aerobics and AeroDANCE squad had a hugely successful 2024! From Term 1 to Term 3, the students trained weekly in their teams to prepare for four exciting competitions throughout the year. It was fantastic to see new students try the program and previous squad members return, with some of the Year 10s completing their fourth year of aerobics.
The Aerobics teams achieved outstanding results at the Gymnastics Victoria State Qualifier competition; with three teams placing first out of all Schools in Victoria. Our firstever Division 2 AeroDANCE routine made its debut at the State Qualifier competition, competing with incredible performance quality and achieving fourth place. A highlight was seeing our new Year 7 students perform confidently and with great expression on stage at their first ever State Qualifier competition.
An incredible four out of five Nazareth teams qualified for the Gymnastics Australia Nationals Competition on the Gold Coast, which was held at the end of Term 3. It was fantastic to see all the students come together as a squad and build new friendships on this trip. The students also achieved more exceptional results, with half of the Nazareth College teams placing top three, and the Division B Upper Secondary team placing first out of all schools in Australia.
Overall, it was fabulous to see new students join the program and jump out of their comfort zone by performing on stage with their team, and returning students embrace the program and build on their skills over another incredible year.

The Nazareth School of Excellence has had an outstanding year, with our before-school and afterschool programs thriving every day of the week. It is inspiring to see so many students embrace the opportunity to arrive early and engage in training sessions.
Tennis celebrated its second year at Nazareth, with students diligently working each morning to hone their skills and aspire to become the next Australian Open champions. This program has proven particularly popular amongst our junior students, who are eager to continue as they advance through the years. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated coaches—Marco Persi, Spiro Genovezos, and Marcus Aparo—whose commitment to morning training has made this program a success.
Volleyball has experienced tremendous growth this year. Training sessions have expanded from just mornings to include afternoons as well, accommodating more students. Participants had the exciting opportunity to compete in the Volleyball Schools Cup at Dandenong Stadium earlier this year, with the highlight being our Senior Girls Volleyball team reaching the semi-finals. Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to announce that four teams will travel to Queensland in December to compete in the week-long Australian Schools Volleyball Championships. A huge thank you to our coaches, Karl Lim and Emmanuel Chan, for their relentless dedication.
Soccer remains a beloved choice among students. This year, we welcomed Year 9 students into the program, leading to a significant increase in participation. We also introduced our first-ever girls-only training day on Thursday mornings, which saw a fantastic turnout. Our Junior Boys, Junior Girls, and Intermediate Girls Soccer teams all had remarkable SIS seasons, remaining undefeated and clinching their respective flags. A massive thank you to Harry Bingham for his consistent training efforts and encouragement for new participants to join.
Basketball continues to captivate our students, with record participation this year. It’s exciting to see so many young athletes enjoying the program, which has allowed us to expand our teams in the SIS competitions to accommodate the growing interest. I have no doubt that the program will continue to thrive as the school community grows. A special thanks to coach Chris Janesse, who has been an exceptional mentor, not only running training sessions but also attending SIS games to support our students.
Overall, the Nazareth School of Excellence is flourishing, and we are excited for what lies ahead!

SPORTS CARNIVALS
House Swimming
We kicked off the House Sports Carnivals with our annual House Swimming Carnival in Term 1 at Noble Park Aquatic Centre (NPAC). We enjoyed beautiful weather, which encouraged our six Houses to compete fiercely. The 25m events were particularly popular, highlighting student strengths in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. To reward our swimmers, we also had the water slide open for them to enjoy. A highlight was the Year 12s, who dressed in vibrant outfits representing their house colours. Their traditional lap of the pool as a cohort made for a special moment, celebrating their final year at the Carnival. In the end, MacKillop House emerged victorious, claiming the win for the second consecutive year.
SIS Swimming
Nazareth proudly hosted the SIS Swimming Carnival at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). Competing against six other schools, our squad of 15 students exceeded all expectations. We won the U13, U14 and U15 boys Pennants. Congratulations to Andrew Dinh, Lucas Dinh, Rainn Lee, and Raven Lee, who were selected to represent SIS at the regional level. A special thank you to Romy Bilu, Olivia Giblin and Luke Georgakopoulos for organising morning training sessions leading up to the event.
House Cross Country
The House Cross Country Carnival took place on the grounds of Nazareth College in Term 2. Students faced the challenge of four laps around the College, totalling 3km. The ideal conditions led to high participation, and points were awarded based on the fastest finishers. MacKillop House claimed victory once again.
SIS Cross Country
The top 10 male and female finishers from the House Cross Country Carnival were invited to represent Nazareth at the SIS Cross Country Carnival, competing against seven schools. We fielded a strong squad of 99 students, primarily from Years 7 and 8, allowing us to fill events in the older age groups. Nazareth finished an impressive third overall—our best result in years!
House Athletics
Our House Athletics Carnival was held in Term 3 at Casey Fields Regional Athletics Track. Unfortunately, heavy rain postponed several events, including high jump. Despite the wet and windy conditions, students were eager to compete and showcase their talents in various track and field events. Congratulations to Chisholm House for finishing at the top of the leader board!
SIS Athletics
After the House Athletics Carnival, standout students were chosen to represent Nazareth in the SIS Athletics Carnival at Casey Fields. Our squad of 61 athletes faced off against six other schools. Although the weather was challenging in the morning, with a slippery track, the sun made an appearance later, contributing to a more enjoyable day for all.

STAFF & HENRY
It’s been a busy and rewarding year for the staff at Nazareth.
We started the year with Henry, our Labra-Doodle, who quickly became a beloved member of the school. Over the year, he gained 12kg (thanks to staff lunches) and graduated from dog therapy school, bringing joy to both students and staff.
2024 also saw the return of the Principal’s Dinner after a decade, where the leadership team entertained us with Wiggles impersonations. Mr Cosentino presented 35+ year service awards to some of our longest-serving staff members.
In June, we sadly said goodbye to Ms Mary Thisgaard, a cherished colleague, at a heartfelt farewell ceremony. This year also brought exciting opportunities for our staff, with Ms Emma Ray presenting at a conference in Cyprus and Ms Tracey Burnett joining a pilgrimage in Italy. We also enjoyed a visit from the Fire Brigade during our Showcase event.
As we head into the summer break, we’re grateful for a fulfilling year and look forward to returning in 2025, refreshed and ready for the year ahead!
