Thank you Military Families! Every November, the president signs a proclamation recognizing the service of military families and declaring this month as Veterans and Military Families Month. Over the month, families just like yours are honored and recognized for their commitment in support of the Navy and our nation. Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) wants to take this opportunity to thank you! Veterans and Military Families Month is a time set aside to recognize you, the military family. Military families know what it means to serve. Every day, you get up and support your service member, standing by during times of separation and through many challenges. You know the risks and stressors, but you accept this life of service anyway. You are essential to the mission and the Navy would not be where it is without you!

Family Connection is a publication of the Fleet and Family Support Program. The Navy’s Fleet and Family Support Program promotes the self-reliance and resilience of Sailors and their families. Respect. Protect. Empower. HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS & SEXUAL VIOLENCE PREVENTION, EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS

Managing Holiday Stress During COVID Many people may be experiencing more stress than usual as the pandemic alters our holiday and travel plans this season. Below are a few suggestions on how to deal with stress in a healthy way during this time: Strengthen

positive connections. Rely on positive people for help and support. This may include family and/or friends. If you are feeling lonely during the season, reach out to friends using the phone or a virtual application. Connect using technology and make use of your social network.

Set

aside 15 minutes for yourself every day. It is important to focus on our own needs and feelings during the holidays. Focus on doing something that you enjoy during this time such as going for a walk, listening to music or reading a magazine.

Set

realistic expectations. Identify what is important to you during the holidays and focus on those tasks. Understand that you may not get everything done and be flexible to make changes to your plan.

Budget.

Review your finances to develop a budget that works for you. Be realistic about how much you can spend on holiday gifts. If you are creative, try handmade gifts.

Focus

on healthy habits. Get plenty of sleep and incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Eat a diet full of nutrients as research has shown that what you eat affects the way you think and feel. Limit consumption of alcohol.

Practice

gratitude. Research has shown that people who practice gratitude are happier, sleep better and enjoy healthier relationships. Try to identify three things you are thankful for on a daily basis.

Consume

the news in moderation. While it is important to stay informed and up to date on the latest news and updates, too much information may contribute to our stress levels. Schedule periods throughout the day to catch up with the news.

If you continue to feel stressed during the holidays, contact your local Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) for additional support. There are counselors available to help. You can find your local FFSC in the FFSC Directory.

This year, the Navy’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program has focused its efforts around the central theme of “Respect. Protect. Empower.” Families can also use this call to action to form the basis of their healthy relationships and teaching their children the qualities of a healthy relationship at home. Healthy relationship education, research and resources have become a predominate effort in sexual violence prevention. Whether the relationship is with a significant other, a peer or a friendship, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect when interacting with others. This approach focuses on increasing life skills based on respect, mutual trust and communication; this is referred to as boosting protective factors. Engaging in and modeling healthy relationships are also an effective way of involving parents and caregivers in the prevention of sexual violence. Teaching about boundaries at an early age as well as welcoming honest, open communication are valuable tools that families can use to set a solid foundation for healthy relationships. Teaching these concepts to children in a developmentally appropriate way can have the added benefit of fostering a stronger family unit. Respect is an integral part of healthy relationships with friends, family, co-workers and our communities. When we treat others as we want to be treated and value one another’s differences, we are demonstrating respect. This also extends to understanding consent and honoring someone’s boundaries. Our Navy community is also well adept at modeling how important it is to protect one another. Not only can caregivers provide this modeling to their children and teens; they can also teach them the value of speaking up on behalf of their peers and protecting them from bullying and harm. By empowering the future generation to intervene, protect one another and demonstrate respect, we can generate powerful change that benefits us all. Ombudsman Moment November 2020 THE NAVY’S OMBUDSMEN-AT-LARGE Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), ADM Mike Gilday, recently appointed two Ombudsmen-at-Large who will report directly to him and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Russell Smith. CNO appointed Stacey Lindsey, spouse of VADM Yancy Lindsey, Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), and Amy Smith, spouse of MCPON Smith. Ombudsmen-at-Large (OALs) serve as a focal point for the important flow of information to Navy ombudsmen, Sailors, and their families. Lindsey and Smith have both completed Ombudsman Basic Training (OBT/eOBT) to ensure their understanding of the role of the command ombudsman and familiarity with the most recent updates to the Ombudsman Program. They both value the training required of ombudsmen and want to assure you that they share the commitment exhibited by their fellow ombudsmen. Ombudsmen-at-Large have historically traveled to bases, Navy-wide, to meet with ombudsmen, family members, and visit the resources available for all families. They are then able to share questions and concerns they learn about with the CNO and MCPON to help them stay informed of the issues that might affect Navy families. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the OALs may not be traveling and their means of communication may be different during this time, but their support will not wane. Please search Ombudsmen-at-Large on Facebook to navigate to their page and follow it for information and program updates. You can also connect with the OALs via private message on Facebook.

PLEASE JOIN US IN WELCOMING MRS. LINDSEY AND MRS. SMITH! To locate your command ombudsman, contact your Fleet and Family Support Center Ombudsman Coordinator or RCC Warrior and Family Support Specialist, or use the Contact Your Ombudsman feature on the Ombudsman Registry home page at https://ombudsmanregistry.cnic.navy.mil.
