Raiders shock Catholic

Raider running back Michael Carter, (7), ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders 31-21 victory at Catholic High School last Friday night. By Bowden Moorer editor@navarrepress.com Clearly there were some question marks about the Raiders offense after they managed just one first down and failed to score in the Kickoff Classic against Milton on August 21st.Those questions were answered early on in the season opener at Gorecki-LeBeau Stadium on the campus of Pensacola Catholic High School. After holding Catholic to a three and out on its first possession. Navarre took over on its own twenty-three yard line. It took just two Michael Carter runs to match the first down total from the previous week. A twenty-nine yard Matthew Webb completion to Tyrell Courtney on third and twenty gave the Raiders their second first down of the drive and got the Raiders into Crusader territory at the 44yard line. The drive stalled after the third first down and Luke Morton’s forty-eight yard field goal attempt missed wide left. The stout Raider defense forced another Crusader three and out after the missed field goal but a muffed punt gave the ball right back to Catholic. Once again the defense was up to the task and forced Catholic to punt after they could not move the ball.

Raider defensive back Lavonte Geisser, (27), intercepts a pass from Catholic quarterback Z’Kari Blocker, (4), in the second quarter to set up the Raiders first score. The game’s first big play occurred with 9:19 left in the first half. After a Raider punt, Catholic took over on their own 31 yard line. On first and ten, quarterback Z’Kari Blocker attempted a deep pass down the left sideline. Navarre’s Lavonte Geisser played the ball perfectly and

came up with the interception. After weaving his way through the Catholic defenders and breaking several tackles, Geisser was finally brought down at the Catholic 1 yard line. Three consecutive running plays resulted in a loss of three yards. Facing fourth and goal in a scoreless game, Coach Jay Walls elected to go for the touchdown instead of a field goal. The gamble paid off as Webb hit a wide open Cameron Mayweather for the touchdown and the game’s first score. Navarre led the contest 7-0 after the Morton PAT. On Catholic’s very next possession Dylan Main came up with a second interception of a Blocker pass and set up the Raiders on the Catholic 20. Navarre was unable to take advantage of the turnover however. A poor snap resulted in another missed field goal and kept the lead at seven. The Raiders doubled the lead on their next possession. Starting on their own 46-yard line, Webb broke off a 45 yard run. A holding call negated most of the gain, but on first and ten from the Crusader 44, Carter broke through the middle of the line and outraced the defenders to the goal. The Morton point after gave the Raiders a 14-0 lead

with just 1:39 left in the half. Unfortunately, Catholic only needed one minute and thirty-five to answer the Navarre score. Forty three rushing yards by Jawan Purifoy and a pass interference call on the Raiders gave the Crusaders the ball at the Raider five. Blocker connected with wideout Duane Moorer in the corner of the endzone to get the Crusaders on the board with just four seconds left in the half. It didn’t take the Raiders long to answer Catholic’s first half score. They started the first drive of the second half on their own 38. Carter picked up 34 yards on two carries, one a twenty-eight yarder. From the Catholic 33, Webb found Quentin Randolph on an out and up pattern and Randolph was untouched for the score. It took just four plays and 1:19 for Navarre to increase their lead to 21-7. The Raider defense continued their excellent play to begin the second half and forced two more Crusader punts. Catholic’s third possession of the second half began on their own 41. Ten plays later, Blocker found Moorer at the goal line for a sixteen yard score to cut the Raider lead to 21-14.
