But to both, the call of the warm sun and cool breezes is an easy urge to answer.

The Emerald Coast is filled with a variety of activities for the entire family and couples with varying interests. Besides award-winning beaches, visitors will find metropolitan attractions and nightlife in the surrounding cities of Destin and Pensacola.

To the north, Visitors will find a wealth of history and adventure.

So go ahead, make plans to explore the best beaches in the world, including the Gulf Islands National Seashore — one of only 10 national seashores. Wildlife watchers will also find heaven here, as the area’s state and national parks offer an opportunity to observe coastal birds and other wildlife — such as dolphins or sea turtles — play in their natural habitat. Or, to see more of the creatures that call our beaches home, visit Navarre Beach’s own Sea Turtle Conservation Center, artificial reefs, Marine Science Station and butterfly house.

You can also visit the nearby Gulfarium or take a day trip to the Gulf Breeze Zoo which houses more than 600 animals.

If you are looking for adventure, fly nearly a quarter-of-a-mile in the air with several parasailing options, Fly the Boat, or zip across the waves on Jet Skis or boat rentals. Take a trip to Blackwater River State Park to enjoy the thrills of rafting or canoeing and take in the beauty of 600 acres of undisturbed nature.

Why is the sand on Navarre Beach and across the Emerald Coast so white that it looks like grains of sugar?

This quartz-rich sand actually washed down from the Appalachian Mountains by way of the Apalachicola River, where it entered the Gulf of Mexico and eventually made its way onto our shores. This sand is pure, white quartz crystals ground into perfect granules, leaving the sand powdery soft, even squeaking, under your toes!

According to Santa Rosa County ordinances, the following rules apply to Navarre Beach: Remove all items used for swimming, sunbathing or recreation two hours after dusk, and keep them off the beach until two hours after sunrise.

4 No camping.

4 No firearms.

4 No glass containers.

4 Remove trash.

4 No pets.

4 No abusive, threatening, indecent or disorderly conduct.

4 No campfires.

4 Do not destroy sea oats.

4 Stay off the dunes.

4 No fireworks.

4 Do not disturb other visitors with radios, TVs, musical instruments or other noise-producing devices.

4 No public address systems.

4 No nudity.

4 No vehicles on the beach.

4 No watercrafts, surfboards and similar objects within the public swimming area.

4 No fishing within the public swimming area.

And, it is always a good idea to wear sunscreen or protect your skin with clothing.

Rip currents

The United States Lifesaving Association estimates that the annual number of deaths due to rip currents on our nation’s beaches exceeds 100. Rip currents account for more than 80 percent of rescues performed by beach lifeguards. These statistics can be reduced by following a few simple guidelines when the surf is rough at local beaches. The greatest safety measures you can take to avoid the dangers of a rip current are to swim near a lifeguard, recognize dangerous surf conditions and be aware of the dangers of rip currents. Storms have changed the shoreline and near-shore sandbars along our beaches, and the frequency of rip currents has increased. A rip current is a turbulent, fast-flowing current that can carry a swimmer away from shore very quickly.

Rip currents are formed when water rushes out to sea in a narrow path (like a break in the near-shore sandbar or from an obstruction of the current caused by a jetty or other type of barrier). Rip currents can last for a few hours or may be permanent; they usually exist during rough surf and after storms.

Some signs of rip currents include:

4 A difference in water color. The water may be murkier from increased sediments or appear darker because it is deeper.

4 The waves may appear to be larger and choppier.

4 Foam or objects are carried directly out to sea, or debris or vegetation may appear perpendicular to the shore at the site of a rip current.

4 As the water rushes out to sea, a bowl-like indentation may be apparent on the shore.

4 Rip currents are usually present if the surf is very rough.

Remember, always use common sense and swim responsibly.

4 If you are caught in a rip current, don’t panic or try to swim against the current. Swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current. Rip currents are rarely more than 30-feet wide.

If you can’t break out of the current, float calmly until it dissipates, usually just beyond the breakers. Then swim diagonally to shore.

If you don’t know how to swim, stay out of the water!

4 Swim near a lifeguard.

4 Supervise children when in or near the water.

4 Respect the beach and water environment; know the water conditions.

4 Know your swimming abilities and limits.

4 Swim in groups.

4 Be aware of weather conditions; get out of the water and away from the beach during storms.

4 Stay calm in the event of an emergency.

4 Pay attention to beach warning flags and lifeguards.

A RED flag means the surf is dangerous: stay out of the water; a YELLOW flag means use caution when entering the Gulf; a GREEN flag indicates waters are calm. A PURPLE flag means dangerous marine life may be present. DOUBLE RED flags mean the water is closed to the public.

If you are in search of some below-the-surface excitement, look no further than Navarre Beach.

Beachgoers can enjoy the tantalizing turquoise water from above and below at an attraction that’s good for the environment and the economy.

Underwater and just off the coastline, the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary has things going … and growing. The plant and animal life is growing as you read this, attracting fascinating fish and colorful marine life to Navarre Beach.

Already an amazing location for coastal bird and wildlife enthusiasts, the artificial reefs just off the coast of Navarre Beach are now grand central station for snorkeling, scuba diving and various other beachside and aquatic recreation.

The near-shore artificial reef footprint in the Gulf of Mexico will soon triple in size thanks to local volunteers from the Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation who have succeeded in placing an expansion initiative into a regional reefing project.

An additional reef site one mile off shore has also been approved catering to the exciting sport of kayak fishing.

“The growth continues and more plant life and crustaceans are growing on top of the reefs on top of each other. Because of that, then more of the animal life comes to feed because it’s an easy source,” Sandler said.

One reef is located in the Gulf of Mexico allowing for deep diving as well as snorkeling for the novices.

The Gulf reef is about 2,000 feet east of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier or about 400 feet from the shoreline near lifeguard tower No. 1.

The reef site is designated by large, white poles with red and green markers.

The deeper water of the Gulf provides a much wider variety of sea life and vegetation. The reefs offer a colorful kaleidoscope for viewing and

Navarre Beach has always been a place of peace, relaxation and recreation rather than amusement parks and commercial developments – and local officials recognize that as something to which both visitors and local residents alike are attracted.

attract marine life that you could be lucky enough to spot such as sea turtles, octopi and juvenile and adult fish like cobia, grouper, king mackerel and red fish.

Other interesting underwater inhabitants call the reef home or make frequent visits to the growing structure.

The Gulf reefs are 15 to 20 feet below the surface. Green flag days offer the perfect opportunity for even inexperienced snorkelers to easily access the reef. On clear days, paddle boarders and kayakers can view the reefs from their unique vantage point. In other words, you’ll be able to fit in those deep dives and still have time to spend another day in beautiful Navarre getting your land-legs back before returning home.

There are also two reefs located on the north side of the county park in the Santa Rosa Sound. The calmer waters of the Intracoastal Waterway allow younger snorkelers an opportunity to swim among the varied species that reside in the brackish water, with the assurance that they are the largest species in the water.

Oysters, the sound’s natural filtering mollusks, sustain other marine life such as shrimp, crab, sea trout and red trout that the youngsters might catch sight of as well.

An added bonus for divers and snorkelers is the opportunity to spot the Florida sea cow — better known as the Manatee — in both the Gulf and the Sound.

Also of interest to snorkelers is the Adopt-a-Reef-Tree program to provide funds to maintain and repair the reefs as needed, make additional park improvements and develop and promote the marine habitat on Navarre Beach.

“Navarre (is) interested in options that are more eco-friendly,” said Nancy Sandler, chairman of the Marine Sanctuary Committee. “We have beautiful beaches and we don’t want too much commercial activity out there when we have something natural that people can enjoy.”

Flippin’ out: Sea turtle conservatory adds to Navarre Beach’s impact on visitors As you drive into Navarre Beach Marine Park, you are greeted by a colorful, eye-catching mural of sea turtles.

The mural serves not only to beautify the entrance to the park, but also to identify the location of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservatory.

Completed by local artist Chuck Chunn on a voluntary basis, the mural also embodies the spirit of the center, which is fully staffed by volunteers who are passionate about the cause.

Spreading awareness and helping turtles with life threatening injuries is the focus of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, which opened in August 2016. All seven types of sea turtles are endangered and four of them frequent the Navarre Beach area. Visitors can take a break from the sun for a bit to enjoy educational and entertaining programs at the facility or even to do some local shopping.

The gift shop, affectionately called the Seamore Store, features beautiful art work and jewelry created by local artists along with gifts for children and literature about sea turtles. Also, inside the center are activities for visitors, especially younger ones, to enjoy including a very realistic nesting bay and life-size art of four types of sea turtles that will allow you to see how you compare in size.

Perhaps the most exciting sight is a viewing pool that is 16 feet by 24 feet and 4 feet deep. The pool houses Gigi, a blind loggerhead turtle that is a permanent resident of the facility. Stadium seating for 30 that is protected from the sun surrounds the west side of the pool for visitors to sit back and relax while watching Gigi in the pool. The entire facility, including the pool area, is compliant with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) with room to maneuver necessary aids and strollers.

“It’s neat how fast the word is spreading about our conservation center,” said Holmes, who is known locally as the Turtle Lady.

Holmes has worked in wildlife rehabilitation for about 25 years and organizes the “turtle patrol” that walks the area beaches daily during the nesting season.

“I’m crazy about all animals, but the sea turtles are just cool,” said Holmes.

“They’re unbelievable creatures. (I love) Seeing the nests and the hatchlings, and how they defy the odds to become adults.”

The first nest of the 2017 season belongs to a large leatherback sea turtle the first of the species to nest on Navarre Beach in recorded history.

Just as the hatchlings defy the odds to become adults, Holmes is confident that the conservation center has been added to the long list of exciting attractions on Navarre Beach – one that offers something for visitors with flippers and hands.

Where the past meets the future

In addition to its cosmopolitan downtown and top-rated beaches, Pensacola is also rich in history. Founded by Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano in 1559, it was the first European settlement in the continental United States; however, it failed to thrive under Spain’s rule. The country abandoned it only to return in 1698. France, which settled New Orleans, began encroaching upon Pensacola, and claimed it in 1722.

But the Spanish took it back. And then, France burned it down.

And that’s only the beginning.

While a walking tour through Plaza de Luna and Veteran’s Memorial Park might be a nice way to learn about historic Pensacola, it doesn’t come close to touring through town on a Segway.

The futuristic scooters may seem a little intimidating at first – how do they stay upright? – but Nick Schuck, owner of Emerald Coast Tours, has only six words of advice for his clients: “Trust me and trust the machine.”

Before the tour even leaves the shop, which is located downtown on Garden Street, Nick gives each rider a brief one-on-one to get them acclimated to the Segway. After a few practice runs on the sidewalk, the tour moves down the street to an open parking lot where riders are set loose for about 10 minutes.

Using a Segway is easier than riding a bike – if you can lean forward and backward, you can operate one.

The speed of the tour is between 8 and 12 miles an hour – it’s not a race, you want to take in the sights at a relaxed pace. And don’t be surprised when Nick leads your group into the street. Pensacola considers Segways to be motor vehicles, so you can ride them in the middle of the road. That way, you don’t have to worry about bumping into to people (or inanimate objects) while maneuvering on the sidewalk. You have the road to yourself.

The first stop on the tour is Plaza de Luna, and with such a beautiful backdrop, it might be difficult to pay attention to your tour guide. But it’s clear Nick, a Pensacola native, is passionate about his hometown’s history, and his enthusiasm is contagious.

Tourists will learn why Pensacola is known as the City of Five Flags, where Naval Live Oaks got its name, and how Spain’s ownership of Florida impacted the outcome of the American Revolutionary War. The tour continues to Plaza Ferdinand II, a park in the middle of downtown, and follows East Zaragossa Street through the historic area and into Seville Square.

But the highlight of the trip is the final stop – Veterans Memorial Park – where Nick gives riders about 20 minutes to explore at their leisure. The park is home to Vietnam Veterans of Northwest Florida’s “Wall South,” which is a one-half scale model of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Monuments honoring those who served in World War I and II are included in the park, as well as the Korean War and the Global War on Terror.

Catch the FISH SAMwich at Science station offers visitors the chance to get their hands dirty and feet wet Just like the busy marine life activity that takes place under the sea, the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station is teeming with a myriad of programs aimed to promote the appreciation, conservation, and understanding of the marine eco system of coastal Florida.

Programs like Saturdays-by- the Sea, fishing and sea safari camps, sleepovers, kayaking trips and other hands-on activities allow visitors the chance to really get to know the nearby waters. To accompany the long list of programs available to local residents and visitors, the center sponsors events throughout the year such as Autism OdysSea, Sea Spooktacular and Merry Fishmas. The center is also open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors will learn about marine debris, the water cycle, sharks and the deep sea. Visitors can also enjoy touch tanks, aquariums, create shark necklaces and more. The center is free to visit, though donations are welcomed.

In addition, funding has recently been approved for an underwater live feed web camera for the Gulf side reefs. The camera will be one of only eight in the world and will allow for a virtual scuba diving experience, viewable online and from the science station.

The center also serves as a classroom for local high school students enrolled in marine biology and oceanography as part of a dual enrollment program with Pensacola State College. An addition to the station, dubbed the Outreach Octobus, allows teaching programs to reach the long list of those who otherwise would not be able to visit.

The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station was created in 2009 after Charlene Mauro’s marine science students held a town hall meeting and presented their idea of converting the empty ranger station into an environmental center to the county commissioners and the school board. Today, the science station hosts more than 4,000 students and community members each year, teaching them about the local marine environments.

Mauro, who is now the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station director, requested grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and BP Oil Spill RESTORE funds to pay for an expansion — which will improve both the facility and the programs. The goal is to build a two-story, 6,000-square-foot building that will house classrooms, a wet lab, marine life exhibits, a conference area and an interpretative center. Outdoor classrooms are also in the works to draw even more visitors to the site. The new Gulf Coast Discovery Center is a project visitors and locals will be proud of for years to come. Mauro has diligently worked to garner support from local entities, such as the school board, the Santa Rosa County Commission and the Tourist Development Council (TDC).

“The bottom line for the science station is we definitely want to expand the programs and staff, and the best way to do that is to expand the station,” Mauro said at a recent TDC meeting.

Mauro stated she has received requests from the University of West Florida to collaborate on research projects, but the science station is limited in space and equipment. So, the expansion would serve educational and research programs just as much as it would provide public activities and programs.

The Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners is also onboard with the expansion, and has approved the addition of the outdoor classroom/pavilion and visitor’s center to the science station. Mauro is currently meeting with a LEAD certified architect to develop the blueprints for the building.

Soon, she hopes those plans will move from paper to reality, and thus offering yet another way that Navarre Beach is proving to be a gem along the Emerald Coast for residents, visitors and the science community.

Kayak walkover It’s never been easier to get your kayak in the Gulf of Mexico thanks to the new kayak and scuba friendly walk over in Navarre Beach Marine Park. It’s perfect for the kayak adventurer looking to fish or just relax on the water. “If you have a surfboard, paddleboard or kayak, you can’t negotiate the standard walkway at the pavilion because of the turns and steps,” Mike Sandler said. The new walkover protects the dunes from traffic and eases the carrying of equipment. It is 6 feet wide and 365 feet long and its designed to be a straight shot to the beach. This walk over has no rails meaning it’s easier to carry kayaks and equipment down to the water’s edge.

The walk over is located at the second gulf side pavilion in the Marine Park.

Sea Life

The sugary-white sands of local beaches along the Gulf of Mexico attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area. It is important for local residents and tourists alike to understand water conditions, flag warnings and safety tips. The Gulf of Mexico is home to a diverse array of marine life that must be respected. Most are harmless, but there are a few species for which you should pay particular attention. Public beaches in Florida use flags to warn visitors of hazardous water conditions and potentially dangerous marine life. Red flags mean the water is dangerous and the purple flag will be flown if there is dangerous marine life in the area. Jellyfish tend to be the most common hazard in Emerald Coast waters.

Green sea turtles

Green sea turtles are the largest of all hard-shell sea turtles, and we are fortunate to share our beaches with nesting females. Each year, locals wait with anticipation for the hatchlings to dig out of the nest and make their way to the water. The female sea turtle will choose a location for her nest on the beach and dig with her hind flippers. One female sea turtle can lay between 60 and 160 eggs in her nest, and then will cover them with sand. The eggs take approximately 60 days to hatch, at which time the babies dig out of the nest to find the water. We take many precautions to protect the hatchlings.

With a few simple steps, everyone can help our beach’s turtles.

4 Remove beach furniture nightly. If it cannot be removed each night, it should be stacked with the shortest edge facing the shoreline.

4 During nesting season, avoid using umbrellas which have poles buried in the sand.

4 Fill large holes left on the beach.

4 Remove plastic bags from the beach. Jellyfish are a staple in a sea turtle’s diet, and plastic bags look like “lunch” to a turtle in the water.

4 Dispose of excess fishing lines or hooks.

4 Turn off any lights when not needed, as the hatchlings will go toward light in search of water.

4 Close curtains and blinds during nesting season.

4 Keep pets off the beach.

Jellies

We have a number of types of jellyfish, or “jellies,” that can be found along Navarre Beach throughout the year. Most have nematocysts, or stinging cells, along the tentacles, although some jellies are harmless. The best thing to do is to be aware of your surroundings. If you see jellies, get out of the water and check with the lifeguards to determine if they are the stinging variety. When the stinging cells hit the body, they can leave a red rash. Most jellyfish stings will subside in a short time, but if you have persistent pain, trouble breathing or are sensitive to stings, seek medical attention.

What to do if you are stung by jellyfish: 4 Rub sand on the injury. This will help to remove the stinging cells and allow for relief.

4 Pour vinegar on the sting site. This will break down the cells. Repeat as needed.

4 There are a number of commercial products available at local drug stores to help reduce the pain of a sting.

Stingrays

Stingrays are in the shark family and, although not usually aggressive, many species have a sharp, serrated barb at the base of the tail.

Stingrays seem to cruise gracefully through the water. However, they feed in the sand and can be found buried in sandy areas, which makes them hard to see and that can cause problems for beachgoers.

Swimmers can step on the stingray and often get hit with the barb as the animal swims away.

The best way to protect swimmers from this accident is to do what is known as the “stingray shuffle.” While walking along in the water, shuffle your feet along the sand. This will frighten the stingray away before you have a chance to step on the fish.

A sting by the stingray barb is very painful, and the pain may last for a few hours.

If you are stung by a stingray: 4 The barb transmits a protein-based venom. This venom causes extreme pain for the first 30 to 90 minutes and will begin to subside after that. There may be a cut at the sting site. The site may bleed and swell. If you are stung on the hand, remove any rings you have on fingers.

4 If you experience any nausea, vomiting, muscle cramping or chills, go to the nearest emergency room immediately. This could be a sign of an allergic reaction or an overdose of venom.

4 Soak the affected area in the hottest water tolerable for at least an hour. This will break down the proteins, the venom will have less effect and the hot water will help reduce pain. The venom may gel or become jelly-like and ooze from the open wound – this is OK, and is actually desired.

4 Wrap the wound in a makeshift bandage (any available clean, lint-free cloth soaked in hot water) once the wound has stopped oozing.

4 Use a topical antibiotic to reduce the chance of infection and relieve pain. If the wound site shows any signs of infection, such as redness, prolonged swelling or pus, seek medical attention immediately. Untreated infections can result in loss of limbs or, in rare cases, death.

4 If you are unsure about the reaction, seek medical attention.

Sharks

First and foremost, fret not — the chance of a shark encounter along the Emerald Coast of Florida is very rare. You actually have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning. Sharks eat fish and other marine life, not people. When swimming, it is important to remember that the Gulf is a wilderness, not a swimming pool. Use common sense when enjoying this vast body of water.

There are precautions you can take to avoid a shark encounter: 4 Avoid swimming in areas where people are fishing.

4 Don’t swim in murky waters or between dusk and dawn (sharks feed during these times and might not see as well in murky waters).

4 Don’t swim if you are bleeding or have open wounds.

4 Don’t swim while wearing shiny jewelry (the reflection looks like fish scales).

4 Refrain from excess splashing, and do not allow pets in the water because of their erratic movements.

4 Exercise caution when occupying the area between sandbars or near steep drop-offs, which are favored hangouts for sharks.

4 Swim in groups or with a buddy.

4 Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be present, and get out of the water if a shark is spotted. Do not harass a shark if you see one.

Gulls

Graceful and acrobatic, gulls are hardly cautious around humans. They will not hesitate to swoop down and take food right out of your hand. You can find these beautiful seabirds on any beach or bay shoreline, or in and around mangrove trees, seawalls and piers.

Laughing gulls are so named because their call sounds like a laugh, and can be easily identified by their black head and red bill.

Herring gulls are much larger and have a white head.

The small ring-billed gull has a black ring around its yellow bill.

They all tend to intermingle. Enjoy watching gulls, but please don’t feed them. Keep in mind that while it is fun, it makes them aggressive and dependent upon humans for food.

Terns

Terns look a lot like gulls in that they are gray above and white below. However, they are a separate species. They have a lighter, more buoyant flight, with sleeker, narrower bodies and wings, forked tails and very sharp beaks. Terns will hover briefly over the water, 10 to 30 feet in the air, and then dive gracefully to catch fish. The largest terns are the Royal tern, with an orange bill. The Caspian tern features a blood-red bill. The smallest tern is aptly named the Least tern. It has a yellow bill, black cap and white forehead. In between is the Common tern, which dons a black cap and orange-red bill.

Black Skimmers and Terns

Birds begin nesting in April or May and usually finish in August. Black skimmers and terns will make their nests along the causeway. Do not disturb any nests you find.

These birds will become very territorial if their nests or their chicks are disturbed. Terns will dive-bomb toward anything they perceive to be a threat.

So, avoid walking on designated nesting areas. Also, obey the speed limit along the causeway to lessen the chance that you may kill a bird or chick.

Sanderlings, Dowitchers and Willets

Sanderlings, dowitchers and willets are shorebirds. Find them on the beach near the water’s edge, looking for food by probing the wet sand with their bills. When humans approach, shorebirds will often run away rather than take flight. At slightly more than 6 inches in length, one of the smallest shorebirds is the sanderling. A black bill, jet-black eyes and speedy, black legs give them away. You’ll see them, usually in groups of a dozen or fewer, scurrying on tiny legs ahead of surging waves.

Dowitchers also frequent the shoreline, but are larger and run less than sanderlings. They have a long, thin bill and are usually gray or light brown in color, depending on the time of year. You’ll see them in flocks of 100 or more, at times. One of the larger shorebirds is the willet. With a relatively long bill, long legs and gray body, a willet is fairly easy to pick out, especially when mingling with sanderlings and dowitchers. You’ll see willets in small flocks, alone or in pairs.

Herons and Egrets

These long-legged wonders are a local favorite. Herons and egrets gather near water anywhere in Florida.

Hummingbird migration

Each year, hummingbirds return to northwest Florida around mid-March and stay until October, although some have been known to stay here year-round. Most commonly spotted here are the Ruby-throated hummingbirds. They are attracted by bright splashes of color and the perfect feed for them consists of a mixture of one part sugar to four parts water. Simply hang a feeder, be patient and enjoy your little visitors.

Monarch butterfly

The majestic Monarch butterflies begin their migration to Mexico in October. Believe it or not, northwest Florida (and, more specifically, the Panhandle Butterfly House in Navarre) is a popular retreat for those migrating. The butterflies get needed nourishment in the butterfly garden before continuing their journey. These butterflies are the most widely recognized primarily because of their colors and size. It is the only butterfly that migrates south in the fall and then north again in the spring.

Historical Fort Pickens When planning a trip to Florida, especially the Gulf Coast, the mind automatically thinks of the beach. White sand, emerald green waters and cloudless skies fill your thoughts.

But what if you could have all of that, plus a fort and a few cannons?

Welcome to Fort Pickens. Located in Pensacola, Fort Pickens offers a long drive up the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and when you reach the end, a giant fort steeped in history awaits.

Fort Pickens is the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and its Navy yard. Construction started in 1829 and was completed in 1834. The fort was named in honor of Maj. General Andrew Pickens of the South Carolina militia, who fought in several Revolutionary War battles including Cowpens and the Siege of Ninety-six.

The u-shaped fort features plenty of nooks and crannies to keep kids busy for hours. Small, crooked hallways lead to hidden rooms and cannons look out the window. Geronimo was once held captive in Fort Pickens in the 1880s.

You can’t leave the area without watching the sun set over the bay. Follow a steep set of stairs to the top of the fort, and watch as the sky goes from blue to crimson and the sun drops like a globe behind Pensacola.

You’re surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Pensacola Bay on the other, and as you look beyond the fort, you feel like you’re on top of the world.

All Fort Pickens campground sites are $26 a night with water, electricity, grills/ fire rings and picnic tables. There are 200 sites ranging in length from 16 feet for tent sites to 50 feet for larger RVs. Scheduled tours of Fort Pickens are offered throughout the year. Call 850-934-2600 for more information.

Once you’re waterfront at Gulf Islands National Seashore, you feel like you’ve been transported to another world. A world where the sunlight dances on the white quartz sand and the sound of the waves melts away any stress.

Voted best beach in Florida by readers of USA Today and 10Best Readers’ Choice Poll, beating out both Clearwater and Siesta beaches, the Seashore’s Florida district runs from Perdido Key through Fort Pickens National Park in Pensacola, into Navarre Beach and all the way out to the East Pass in Destin – 58 miles.

“Many people only think of it as Fort Pickens or Opal Beach but the majority of the Seashore is actually in the water surrounding Santa Rosa Island,” Superintendent Dan Brown said.

According to Brown, the Seashore’s southern boundary extends 1 mile into the Gulf of Mexico while its northern boundary extends 1 mile into the Intracoastal Waterway in the Santa Rosa Sound.

Gulf Islands National Seashore draws around 4 million visitors each year, but offers miles of pristine beaches for those looking for a less-crowded, more serene visit.

While the view of the Gulf is breathtaking, there’s much more that the Seashore offers – picnic areas, pavilions, fishing and camping to name a few.

Gulf Breeze is home to Naval Live Oaks, a portion of the seashore that boasts nine hiking trails. Fort Pickens, another popular hiking spot, is also known for its campsites, whether you bring your RV or decide to pitch a tent.

Sites have water, electricity, picnic tables, fire pits with grills and a dump station. Enjoy snorkeling, biking, beach combing, boating or just explore your surroundings.

The seashore offers guided tours that aim to educate visitors about the variety of species who call the area home. Seagrass Safari, for example, is a hands-on tour that takes you into the water to spot animals in their natural habitats. Ghost crabs, herons, bottlenose dolphins – miles and miles of beach stretches from Navarre Beach to Pensacola Beach.

The Seashore also hosts stargazing events where local astronomers share their celestial knowledge under the stars.

If you’re a history buff, tours of Fort Barrancas, Fort Massachusetts and Fort Pickens are available. The Fort Barrancas Area offers a slide show where you can learn about the Civil War in Pensacola.

The Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center includes hands-on exhibits and an orientation film for first-time visitors.

Fort Pickens

Fort Pickens is the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay, Florida and its Navy yard. Construction on the fort began in 1829 and was completed five years later in 1834. Fort Pickens enjoyed a long life of active duty, as it was used until the 1940s. Historic Fort Pickens and its Visitor Center is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. March through October.

Naval Air Station Pensacola

Naval Air Station Pensacola is known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation” and features the National Aviation Museum and IMAX, a lighthouse and Fort Barrancas, built by the Spanish in 1797. Pensacola Museum of Art

Historic Magnolia Grill

Hurlburt Field is home to the Air Force Special Operations Command. The 1st Special Operations Wing has a long, distinctive history. Hurlburt Field was originally designated as Auxiliary Field No. 9, one of the original small pilot and gunnery training fields built on the sprawling Eglin Air Force Base complex in the 1940s. The 1st SOW was redesignated the 16th SOW on Oct. 1, 1993, by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Merrill A. McPeak, as part of Air Forcewide unit renumbering. The mission of the 16th SOW continued to provide a rapid reaction force for global special operations and to train aircrews to instruct and assist allied forces in all phases of special air operations.

On Nov. 16, 2006, the Air Force re-designated the 16th SOW back to the 1st SOW. Hurlburt Field is proud of its history and it stands ready to perform its unique mission “Any Time, Any Place.”

Eglin Air Force Base is located southwest of Valparaiso, Fla., and covers 463,128 acres. Eglin AFB was established in 1935 as the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base. It is named in honor of Lt. Colonel Fredrick I. Eglin (1891–1937), who was killed in a crash of his Northrop A-17 pursuit aircraft on a flight from Langley to Maxwell Field, Ala. Eglin is the home of the Air Armament Center (AAC) and is one of three product centers in the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). Serving as the focal point for all Air Force armaments, the AAC is the center responsible for the development, acquisition, testing, deployment and sustainment of all air-delivered weapons.

The 33rd Fighter Wing “Nomads,” an associate unit at Eglin Air Force Base, was re-designated under Air Education and Training Command on Oct. 1, 2009. As the first of its kind in the Department of Defense, the joint wing is responsible for F-35 A/B/C (Joint Strike Fighter) pilot and maintainer training for the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Air Force and, in the future, at least eight coalition partners.

The area is also home to soldiers from the Army 7th Special Forces Group. The Air Force-owned, Army-occupied land just north of Eglin and west of Duke Field, sports 500 acres of land. The facility officially opened its gates on May 2, 2011, and is home to more than 2,200 active duty soldiers and 3,000 dependent spouses and children. The 7th SFG has nearly 500 soldiers deployed across 10 countries and in three different battle theatres.

The site now occupied by Naval Air Station Pensacola has a colorful historical background dating back to the 16th century when Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna founded a colony here on the bluff where Fort Barrancas is now situated. Construction began in April 1826, and the Pensacola Navy Yard became one of the best equipped in the country. Today, the Pensacola Naval Complex in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties employs more than 16,000 military and 7,400 civilian personnel.

Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Fla., is the busiest Naval Air Station in the world, responsible for an estimated 46 percent of the Naval Air Training Command’s total flight time and more than 11 percent of Navy and Marine Corps total flight time. More than 1,200 personnel complete their initial flight training every year. NAS Whiting Field and Training Air Wing Five have an outstanding and unmatched safe flying record. The station has served as a naval aviation training facility since it was established as a naval air auxiliary station in July 1943. Its present mission is to train student naval aviators in the primary and intermediate phases of fixed-wing aviation, and in the advanced phases of helicopter training.

Blue Angel Autograph Signing During the 2017 season, the Blue Angels will perform practice air shows over Naval Air Station Pensacola most Tuesday and Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. They will answer questions and sign autographs at the National Museum of Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola the following dates* June 7, 13, 14, 20, 21; July 11, 12, 18; Aug. 9, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23; Sept. 6, 12, 13, 19; Oct. 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31; and Nov. 1, 7, 8, 9. *Note the autograph signing schedule is subject to change without notice.

Pensacola Air Show When: July 15-16, 2017 Where: Pensacola Beach Witness exhilarating stunts and heart-stopping maneuvers at the Pensacola Beach Air Show. Civilian and other military aircraft will perform aerial acrobatics over the Gulf of Mexico during a weekend of high-flying fun. July 7 is the full dress rehearsal and July 8 is the Pensacola Beach Air Show – the civilian show begins at noon and the Blue Angels take flight at 2 p.m.

Red, White and Blue Hero’s Fireworks When: Thursday evenings through Aug. 24 Where: HarborWalk Village, 10 Harbor Blvd., Destin Every Thursday night join in a celebration of the efforts of people who go above and beyond to better their community. Enjoy live entertainment, face painting, free kids’ crafts, and a WWII replica flyover.

The evening is topped off by a spectacular fireworks display over the Destin Harbor.

Catch a ride on the Safari Line train through 30 acres of free-roaming animals in their natural habitat.

Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center Welcoming visitors to the Navarre Beach Marine Park, the center is the first stop inside the park. Visitors can take a break from the sun to enjoy educational and entertaining programs at the center or even do some shopping.

The saltwater pool, measuring 16 feet by 24 feet and 4 feet deep, is the perfect way to see Gigi, the center’s resident loggerhead sea turtle. Gigi came to the center to live because she is blind and cannot be released. The center’s interpretive center has been carefully designed with a family focus so explorers of all ages can learn in a hands-on manner. West Florida Railroad Museum/ Milton Train Depot The Restored Train Depot and Museum houses a wide variety of memorabilia from the L&N, Frisco and other railroads. Children will enjoy the opportunity to explore several train car displays, outbuildings and the G scale garden railroad. There is also an active set of train tracks nearby so if you time it right, you can watch the train roll by up close! Open Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Navarre Beach Marine Science Station Provides hands-on marine science opportunities that encourage a deeper understanding of our coasts and ocean for students. They seek to stimulate student interest in science and teach

the importance of caring for the marine environment. The 2017 summer day camps take place June 12 - 16, June 19 – 23, June 26-30, July 24-28 and July 31 – August 4. The camps are designed to allow children to grow up learning about the Gulf of Mexico’s marine science and coastal ecology while nurturing the curiosity and stewardship potential in each child. Camps include Dolphin Discovery, Turtle Tots, Jellyfish Jam, Guy Harvey Fishing Camp, Paddle Palooza and Junior Marine Biologist.

The Emerald Coast Science Center The Emerald Coast Science Center, located in Fort Walton Beach, is a hands-on exploratory museum and nonprofit educational facility. Kids can play the invisible harp that plays when hands block the infrared waves, try out the hurricane simulator and see who can make the biggest bubble in the bubble dome. By its own definition, esprit means lively and vivacious, so it was only fitting that Paul Rollins and his son Patrick name their first distilled spirit Esprit de Krewe vodka.

The flavor of the vodka unparalleled. The name given by the father and son duo distillers pays homage to Paul’s military career as well as what they see as the spirit of the Gulf Coast. The two own and operate a hidden gem in Gulf Breeze known as Rollins Distillery, the first licensed distillery in the Florida Panhandle.

It took some five years to come to fruition, but they finally began bottling in December 2015. So far, they have their trademark vodka and a special rum, Krewe of Jean Lafitte, bottled just in time for Mardi Gras earlier this year. The time spent perfecting the spirit was well worth it. The Rollins’ returned home from the annual American Distilling Institute’s Judging of Craft Spirits with awards to show for their work. The Esprit de Krewe vodka garnered a silver medal and the Best of Category award. The Krewe of Jean Lafitte rum earned a bronze medal. The awards speak volumes for a new distillery.

Paul Rollins, a retired naval aviator with a degree in chemistry who flew F/A-18 Hornets, was looking to produce a product that could be sold elsewhere and that would be desired in good times and in bad times, and would be easily transportable.

That led him to the distillery business.

They incorporated in 2011 and found their facility and pursued their license in 2012.

In 2013 they acquired equipment and began their development. They decided on distilling rum and vodka; it was what could be done on a shoe-string budget and allow them to grow. And they are now in the process of developing their flavor profile for their crystal rum.

The rum and vodka distilled at Rollins Distillery begins with molasses. The oversimplified version of the process is one in which the molasses is watered down to where the yeast will grow. “We give nutrients to the yeast and adjust the pH so that they are comfortable. We bring the spirit down and do a two-distillation process.

The first is the stripping run and the second is the spirit run,” Paul explained.

The distillation run is separated into parts; the foreshot, heads, hearts, and tails. “The beginning of the run is mostly unnatural solvents and then you get the hearts, which is what you want. Then the tails are the less volatile and taste bitter and earthy,” Paul said. And while science certainly plays a part in the process, Patrick says it is more of an art. “The art comes in from where you make your cut, and it pushes the character of your spirit,” Patrick said.

Paul and Patrick Rollins show a passion for their work through the education they impart when visitors come to the distillery. “Spirits are affected by oxygen and oxygenation. They can start out very closed off and sharp and with oxygen they blossom and then over time become flat,” Patrick said.

Recently the pair have teamed up with Lewis Bear distributing company in Pensacola.

The company is best known for its beer distribution but has a small spirit distribution.

Currently, Esprit de Krewe can be found at the Fish House in Pensacola, World of Beer, Jackson’s Steakhouse, Vinyl, Aloha Liquor, Bamboos and Johnny Huston’s.

And of course, they welcome visitors to the distillery’s tasting room to try before you buy. Located at 5680 Gulf Breeze Parkway, they are open noon – 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Fishing inshore, utilizing the Santa Rosa Sound as well as the Escambia, East and Choctawhatchee bays, you will find speckled trout, white trout, sheepshead, redfish, gray snapper and flounder waiting to grab your bait.

Do you enjoy relaxing on the Gulf beaches in your chair with your fishing rods staked out in the sand? You will find Florida pompano, redfish, whiting, bluefish and ladyfish and beautiful, clean water in abundance.

Making trips longer than eight hours offshore will take you out to where the big amberjack, snapper and grouper live, as well as yellowfin tuna and an assortment of billfish.

Wetting a line at the closest shore to spending a night out on the Gulf, the Emerald Coast can provide you with all the fishing challenge and excitement you desire.

Since its Memorial Day 2010 completion, the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier has been celebrated as the longest fishing pier extending into the Gulf of Mexico. The pier features concrete piles and an octagonal-end design with a surface area of approximately 3,800 square feet. The pier was constructed using more than 370 breakaway wood panels, which would detach during heavy wave action and help preserve the integrity of the structure, reducing possible storm repair costs.

With a surface area exceeding 32,000 square feet, the pier offers fishermen ample space to angle 30 feet above sea-level.

The pier’s deck was renovated in 2014 and provides more space to enjoy with family and friends. Inside the pier store, fishermen can find the odds and ends they may have left behind, as well as souvenirs, food and drinks. There is also occasionally live music during the summer, but regardless, the pier provides views of the Gulf and all its wildlife like nowhere else.

They cook, clean, provide bathing assistance, transport clients, run errands for clients, assist in packaging and moving, take clients fishing, golfing, to medical appointments, and more! TLC can pick up a child or children from school or other location and take them home, assist with homework, ensure bathing, prepare the evening meal, get the child or children into bed. Or they can transport adults and/ or children to fun adventures and activities on the beach, a movie theatre, the fair, etc. or be cared for in home or a hotel/resort while caregivers/parents go out for the evening.

TLC also has a program called Return Home with TLC – a program specifically designed to assist persons of all ages returning home following hospitalization and/or rehab skilled nursing stay.

Event Planning? TLC Caregivers can assist there as well! They can provide childcare or adult care for events or other needed nonmedical services, including assisting with food display and serving at the event!
