Navarre Cub Scouts in pack 104 and 105 spent Jan. 19 cheering at the packs’ Pinewood Derbies. After weeks of perfecting the looks and skills of their racing machines, the Cubs got to race to the finish in style surrounded by friends and family. Once the heats were done the racing times were averaged and the Pinewood Derby top three for each category were named. The top three finishers in each category will advance to the Feb. 2 Pensacola Bay District Pinewood Derby Championship. See story on page 1B.
Parents accuse soccer club of misrepresentation By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press The Navarre United Futbol Club, under the auspice of Navarre Youth Sports Association, has been served a McDonald demand letter requesting $936 be refunded for misrepresentation. Daryl and Mildred Seward of Navarre allege that NUFC misrepresented Coach Ken McDonald’s credentials and that NUFC failed to operate in accordance with the NUFC bylaws in the Jan. 2 letter.

Contract extension given to pier management By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Santa Rosa County Commissioners plan to give The Pier, Inc., managers of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier, a five-month contract extension to ensure a Slye management transition doesn’t occur at the peak of tourism season. County Administrator Hunter Walker presented a draft contract for pier management during a Jan. 22 commissioner meeting for the board’s consideration before the county puts the contract out to bid. He said specific language still needed to be added about issues that have occurred during the three-year lease with Pier, Inc., including noise complaints and the power bill.

Johnson announces 2016 sheriff candidacy By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Lt. Bob Johnson plans to run for Santa Rosa County sheriff in 2016 and is taking advantage of a recent transfer to the main office Johnson in Milton to gain experience. After serving as the District 2 supervisor in Navarre for two and
a half years, Johnson has been assigned to an administrative position in the main office in Milton. “I do need administrative experience to make me a wellrounded candidate for sheriff in 2016,”said Johnson. Sheriff Wendell Hall said he is rotating his lieutenants to work in administrative positions in Milton. “We’ve got some divisions that will need to be filled in the next couple of years because of
retirements,”said Hall.“So I’m rotating lieutenants in and out of positions to see who is best suited for the position(s) in a captain’s capacity.” Lt. PatVega is currently serving as District 2 supervisor. Hall said he is rotating each lieutenant every six weeks. Lt. Chris Watson is tentatively scheduled to replace Vega, but that could change said Hall.

Navarre loses valued volunteer to cancer By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press The year began on a somber note for Keith Elwood of Navarre when he lost his wife and friend of 14 years on Jan. 5 in Elwood Pennsylvania. Peggy Elwood, who was an avid volunteer in the community, lost her battle with cancer during one last trip over the

She was fine until the day we were to come back (Jan. 3),”said Keith.“We took her to the ER and they thought she had pneumonia but when they X-rayed her, they discovered her upper body was full of cancer.” Her organs began to shut down one by one, and she passed away two days later. “She definitely wanted to
go… she might’ve known she didn’t have much time,”said Keith. Peggy and Keith met during a Navy reunion in Wisconsin where they discovered and Peggy’s first husband and Keith had been stationed together on the U.S.S. Putnam decades earlier. “We didn’t know each other until we went to the reunion but they knew each other,”said Peggy in an earlier interview.
