“What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.” ~Gertrude Jekyll

NEW HAVEN/ MIDDLESEX EDITION

Every month has its unique magic, but my favorite month always has been June. During my childhood, June marked the end of the school year (wasn’t a big fan of grammar school) and the beginning of 3 months of unstructured outdoor fun with my neighborhood friends and swimming for hours at a time until I looked like a prune. These days, I still love unstructured outdoor fun and I’m a fish in the water. This is also the time of year when I get to set up the back deck at my home as an office—Just my computer, the woods, the birds and me. Our June editorial feature focuses on integrative health for men, including new research and integrative approaches for treating heart disease, erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer and depression. Statistics have shown that, compared to women, American men have poor health habits, suffer more injuries and are slow to get medical attention. It is my hope that you 80 percent plus female Natural Awakenings’ readers out there will share this article with the male loved ones in your life, be it your husband, significant other, friends or family members. Now that our world is opening up again, people are eager to get out in the world and travel—So am I. Our Green Living article shares some ideas for choosing sustainable modes of transportation, along with places to stay, shop and dine. One of the biggest challenges for plant-based eaters, who want to travel is finding places to dine and grocery stores to shop in that offer healthy, whole food eating options. Check out our Conscious Living article, which offers great travel tips for vegans. If you are traveling by car and want to some healthy snacks to eat along the way and/or bring to your destination hotel, we have included a few mouth-watering vegan recipes that you can prepare in advance and bring with you on your journey. In this month’s issue, you will also find articles on diverse topics such as holistic parenting, mind and body fitness through gardening, and drug-free ways to treat depression. Speaking of holistic parenting, the New Haven chapter of the Holistic Mom’s Network (HMN) is a very active, non-profit, support and discussion network, connecting parents and caregivers interested in holistic living. Every third Tuesday, the HMN New Haven chapter gathers at the Woodruff YMCA in Milford (meetings currently happening virtually) to provide families with helpful information and support focusing on positive, holistic parenting, and healthy and sustainable living. The New Haven chapter meeting information is included in our news brief section every month. For the upcoming June 15 gathering, see pages 7 and 8. For those of you who are new Natural Awakenings’ readers, our mission is to empower individuals to live a healthier lifestyle on a healthier plant; educate communities on the latest in natural health and sustainability, and connect readers with local wellness resources and events, inspiring them to lead more balanced lives. We are a solution-based magazine that focuses on the positive. Many of our readers have commented that they pick our issue up every month because they always feel better after they read it. On that upbeat note, we wish you a blissful summer—Enjoy the pages ahead! And to all of you fabulous Dads, have a wonderful Father’s Day! Take good care of yourselves.
