The Swiss National Museum is located in the heart of the city of Zürich, right across the street from the Main Railway Station. The museum houses the largest cultural-historical collection of objects in the country.

In this district where machines used to rattle and the air was heavy with soot, Zürich now boasts a fashionable hub where art and other pleasures can be experienced.

The museum building – over 100 years old – is reminiscent of a fairy-tale castle. History comes alive behind its sturdy walls.

How did past generations live, think and feel? The material heritage they left behind – from handicrafts to mundane everyday objects – provides us with answers, from prehisto­ ric times to the present.

The Swiss National Museum also addresses socially relevant topics by staging special temporary exhibits that open up new perspectives.

A shoppers’ paradise has been created in 36 of the viaduct’s arches, with a colourful mix of delicatessen shops, studios, sports and fashion label outlets to tempt visitors. At the heart of this precinct is the market hall, where 20 farmers and pur­ veyors of food from the surrounding area offer their wares.

Museum of Photography

Today, the Löwenbräu site is home to internationally renown­ ed art galleries, and the Schiffbau (a former shipyard) houses Moods, the famous jazz club. Many other clubs and Zürich labels invite visitors to enjoy the nightlife or simply stroll around. The area below the arches of the railway viaduct in Zürich West (built in 1894) has also seen a resur­ gence of life. It is now an urban meeting point with half a kilometer where visitors and locals can stroll or drop into shops, entertainment venues and places to eat or drink.

Switzerland’s mecca of photography focuses not only on contemporary works (by William Eggleston, Andreas Gursky and others) but also on those by classical masters of the 19th and 20th centuries (August Sander, Weegee, etc).

The Museum of Photography is also a centre for cultural history and sociology, as these disciplines relate to applied photography in the worlds of industry, architecture and fashion. The programme of exhibits covers both disciplines.

Trends, tradition and native Swiss handicrafts are on offer in the Niederdorf and Oberdorf districts.

Explore Winterthur’s museums with the Winterthur Museum Pass: CHF 25 for 1 day (excluding the Technorama) or CHF 35 for 2 days, with use of the special museum bus. The Museum Pass can be obtained from Winterthur Tourism or at the city’s museums.

Elephants, rhinos, penguins and 20 species of monkeys are just some of the animals on the Zürichberg that will transport you into an exotic world – with all your senses.

At 871 meters above sea level, the Uetliberg towers over the rooftops of Zürich. The Uetliberg – a car-free environment – is the “home mountain” of Zürich’s inhabitants and is a popular area for recreation on the city’s doorstep.

Zürich Wildlife Park is a unique blend of forest, wilderness and animals in the heart of the conurbation that includes Zürich, Zug and Lucerne.

The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen offer visitors the magnificent vista of Europe’s largest waterfall. 700 cubic meters of water cascade over the rocks (under normal flow conditions) to plunge 23 meters, over a width of 150 meters. We recommend a boat trip in the Rhine Falls basin to the central rock and further downstream along the Rhine.

Mount Titlis is one of Central Switzerland’s most popular desti­ nations for winter sports and excursions. This mountain – with an overall height of 3238 meters above sea level – is part of the Uri Alps chain, and the area around its peak is covered by a glacier.

The Rigi is a mountain massif between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz.

Enjoy unique moments on a circular cruise offered by the Lake Zürich Navigation Company, starting from Bürkliplatz in Zürich.

Soaring to 1,800 meters above sea level, the Rigi is one of the most popular destinations for excursions.

Cable cars carry visitors from Engelberg to Mount Titlis: the Titlis-Rotair was the world’s first rotating cable car.

Take the cable car to Rigi Kaltbad and then travel on Europe’s first cogwheel train to Rigi-Kulm, where you will be greeted by a superb all-round view of the Swiss Midlands and a unique panorama of the Alps.

Round Trips Every day during the summer months, the Lake Zürich Naviga­ tion Company offers short round trips (1,5 h), as well as long round trips (4 h) to Rapperswil. Round trips are also available starting from Rapperswil, such as the 3-hour round trip on the upper lake.

The castle, home to the Polish Museum, towers over Rapperswil-Jona from the summit of its hill, which affords an impressive view of the town and the lake. Rapperswil-Jona is justly known as the “Town of Roses” thanks to more than 16,000 roses that bloom from May until October in the rose gardens of the Capuchin monastery and in the Schanz park.

Be amazed by the snow leopards in their rocky Himalaya landscape, watch the Andean bears as they go climbing in search of food in their misty mountain world, and admire the giant turtles swimming in the Masoala Rainforest.

It is warm and humid here all year round – a fragrant, tropical green oasis, a piece of Madagascar “live” on 11,000 square meters. Explore the rainforest as you follow a twisting path and gain glimpses of a typical rainforest, dense with palms and inhabited by lemurs and fruit bats. An experience for the whole family!

Visitors can reach the Uetliberg via the S-Bahn (suburban train system) route that runs almost to the summit. The mountain affords an impressive panoramic view of the city, the lake and the Alps. Various hiking trails also lead from the city of Zürich to the summit; the ascent takes about an hour.

In summer, there’s plenty to discover on well-marked hiking routes, a mountain bike route, and on the Planet Trail. This hourand-a-half to two-hour walk from the Uetliberg to the Felsenegg railway (in Adliswil) takes you on a fascinating tour through a model of our solar system.

Other activities: sledging in winter, climbing and a variety of mountain bike trails.

The Sihl Forest is waiting to be discovered, with its 70 km of hiking trails, 51 km of cycle and mountain bike routes and 41 km of bridle paths.

The Visitor Centre, close to the Sihlwald train station, is the gate­ way to the Sihl Forest. Visitors to the centre will find a museum with rotating exhibitions, a coffee shop and a souvenir boutique, and they can obtain tips and advice on the Zürich Wildlife Park and the Sihl Forest experience trail. This entertaining 2-hour forest experience trail introduces both young and old to the fascinating wonders of nature and the forest.

The adventure trail with its double-elevator system and the Belvedere path provide barrier-free access to the amazing natu­ ral spectacle of the Rhine Falls.

A chance for the entire family to experience nature!

One of Europe’s most spectacular rope parks was opened in April 2010 at the Rhine Falls Adventure Park: children aged four or over, and anyone else who loves an adventure, can dangle from tree to tree on eleven different courses – or they can plunge in free fall with a soft landing, from a platform over 13 meters high that has a breathtaking direct view of the Rhine Falls.

The Titlis Cliff Walk, a suspension bridge with a length of about 100 meters, was opened on Mount Titlis (at an altitude of 3,041 meters above sea level) in December 2012. This, Europe’s highest suspension bridge, traverses an abyss that plummets to a depth of 500 meters.

The mountain also offers a wide range of leisure activities: hiking, sledging, skiing, paragliding, carriage rides, nostalgic trips on a steam train, culinary attractions and much more besides.

Other attractions (dependent on the weather): a visit to the ice grotto, a trip over glacier crevasses in the “Ice Flyer” glacier chairlift, or sledding fun in the snow with the “Fun Lift” (also available in summer). www.titlis.ch

Back in the Middle Ages, this region was already familiar to many travellers from the north. Lake Zürich lies on the route taken centuries ago by pilgrims making their way to the shrine of St. James at Santiago de Compostela, and many of them also visited Rapperswil-Jona. The route continues towards Einsiedeln across Switzerland’s longest wooden bridge.
