In fifth grade, we were an allboys school and there was not much diversity. Now, through my years here, there has been more and more diversity. It’s the same Nativity, we have the same expectations, just bigger.
Dear Friends,
Summer of Service 2025 was another historic milestone for Nativity School of Worcester, as we welcomed 37 new students, the largest cohort in our history. Thanks to your support, together, we’re continuing to expand our impact by ensuring more students have access to an excellent, holistic Nativity education!
The conclusion of the 2024 - 2025 school year marked the successful end of our first year educating young women at Nativity Worcester. The school year enabled us to honor our history of academic excellence and transformative opportunities while furthering a lasting legacy of impact. Members of the Julie Power Girls Division thrived, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and leadership to our community. Meanwhile, our young men and members of the now Chick Weiss Boys Division, named fittingly after Nativity’s incredible co-founder Chick Weiss, embraced the newest members of our community and continued to grow as leaders. The Nativity Worcester spirit and community was as lively and engaged as ever, making it a special year for all our community members!
The meaningful experience that our students and graduates are part of only happens because of people like you. We're grateful for your partnership and belief in the power of a quality education that is rooted in the Ignatian value of Cura Personalis, caring for the whole person. In this newsletter, you’ll read exciting recent news and hear from our students and graduates who are living out Nativity Worcester’s four pillars of strength, scholarship, character, and service, while making a difference in the world because of their Nativity education. Thank you for making this life-changing experience possible. You are instrumental to the growth of our school and are having a profound impact on our Nativity Men and Women. We appreciate all you do from all of us at Nativity Worcester!
With Gratitude,

“ Don’t let anybody, anybody convince you this is the way the world is and therefore must be. It must be the way it ought to be. ”
SUMMER OF SERVICE
Alongside academic classes and team-building activities, our students participate in many service opportunities throughout the Summer Session. This year, our service theme centered around a quote from Toni Morrison, an American novelist and editor. She once said: “Don’t let anybody, anybody convince you this is the way the world is and therefore must be. It must be the way it ought to be.”
Toni Morrison was born in Lorain, Ohio, she studied English at Howard and Cornell Universities and later worked as an editor at Random House, where she advocated for and supported Black writers. Her own writing career took off with The Bluest Eye, and she gained widespread acclaim with novels like Sula, Song of Solomon, and her Pulitzer Prize-winning Beloved. In 1993, she became the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison was admired for her unflinching exploration of race, memory, and history. She taught at Princeton University and remained a vital cultural voice until her death in 2019.
We learned about her life and celebrated her major achievements throughout our Summer of Service this year. Our students made an effort to embody her quote, doing things to make the world more like it ought to be, starting with our Worcester community and the partnership of the following organizations:
The Village
Community Harvest Project
Veterans Inc.
El Buen Samaritano
TONI MORRISON
Ever since this school year started, I felt my sister has become more mature in handling new situations as well as exploring things out of her comfort zone. The structure that Nativity has provided has really helped her build a routine that makes getting through the day much easier.
JAVIAN ALLEN GRADUATE OF THE GRANDE CLASS OF 2022
NAMING THE CHICK WEISS BOYS DIVISION
CHICK WEISS BOYS D I V I SION
In early 2025, Nativity Worcester received a $3,000,000 campaign gift from a longtime supporter and friend of the school. In recognition of this generous and impactful gift, and in consultation with the anonymous donor, the school’s Boys Division has been named the “Chick Weiss Boys Division” in honor of Chick Weiss. Chick Weiss, Nativity Worcester Trustee and Co-founder, was instrumental in establishing Nativity and has left an enduring
mark on Worcester as an educator, civic leader, and champion for access to quality education.
Charles S. (Chick) Weiss, Ph.D. was born in Mauch Chunk, PA (now called Jim Thorpe, PA). Weiss received his B.S. degree from the University of Scranton and his Ph.D. in Physiological Psychology and Neurobiology from Ohio University. He later spent 41 years at the College of the Holy Cross, serving as a Psychology professor, department chair,
and key figure in major campus initiatives. During the late 1990s while Dr. Weiss was at Holy Cross, he was approached by senior administration to establish a Nativity School in Worcester with President Michael McFarland, S.J. He has since dedicated endless hours to ensure the success of Nativity Worcester, sitting as the Board Chair, co-leading the first Capital Campaign, and returning to the school often throughout its 22 year history.
I was moved to tears to learn that the Boys Division of Nativity School of Worcester will be named for me . . . While I have been singled out for this honor, I am well aware that there have been so many others who dedicated their efforts and generosity to starting and sustaining this place where miracles happen every day for our middle school boys and girls. The teaching and administrative staff at Nativity Worcester offer an education that enriches not only the lives of these young people, but also the lives of their families and the generations that will follow. I am so proud to be a part of its past success and all the successes that are to come.
A SNAPSHOT OF OUR CO-DIVISIONAL SCHOOL
“
BENNETT, 5TH GRADE:
This school is a very good school. They let you do a bunch of fun things, go to new places, teach you new things, and help you grow. The teachers also help you learn new virtues that make you a better all-around person.
From just two small classes in a church basement to enrolling nearly 100 students and supporting over 275 graduates, Nativity Worcester has grown considerably thanks to the dedication of our special community. In 2021, Nativity made a pivotal decision: to expand its mission by opening a new division for girls, providing them with the same holistic, high-quality education and support that have defined the school since its founding. This shift was not only a response to community need, but also a bold step toward greater equity in educational access. The result is a vibrant, co-divisional school—still united in mission, but now offering distinct spaces and programming for both boys and girls.
Just last year, with the addition of our Julie Power Girls Division we are now a co-divisional school. Here’s what Nativity Worcester looks like today:
From Jen Smith, 5th Grade Lead Teacher
In her second year at Nativity Worcester: What was it like teaching the first group of 5th grade girls at Nativity? What stood out to you about that experience or how did you see the girls change and grow throughout the year?
It was such a joy to teach the 5th Grade Bowman class last year. As the first girls class, they brought a new energy to the building. My biggest takeaway was the community we built. The girls grew so much over the course of the year, emotionally and academically. They learned to have a growth mindset and trust that all the adults at Nativity want the best for them. I’m looking forward to watching them continue to grow through the rest of their time at Nativity.
“
KATTALEYA, 5TH GRADE:
My favorite thing about Nativity so far is making friends and meeting the nice teachers. If you ever need help they help you right away, you just have to tell them. They are very generous and good teachers.
Working in both divisions simultaneously, what do you think the co-divisional model brings to the school community as a whole?
The codivisional model is a powerful tool in educating the whole person. The students are building strong ties with students of their own gender which is powerful for empathy and common experiences. However, they also have the opportunity to form bonds with students in the other division during lunch, recess and team building activities throughout the year. These kids are so lucky to have the opportunity to grow and learn in such a nurturing, safe space. This unique model will allow our youngest Nativity students to figure out who they are while we provide a safe space for growth.
If someone asked you what makes Nativity’s approach to education special, especially now that we are co-divisional, what would you say?
One of Nativity’s biggest strengths is our focus on educating and nurturing the whole person. The communities we build in each class allow students to try new things and grow as a learner with the support of classmates and teachers who want the best for them. Academic learning cannot take place until students feel physically, emotionally, and psychologically safe in their environment. This truth is what makes Nativity Worcester such a special place.
“THOMAS, 8TH GRADE:
JEREMY, 6TH GRADE:
If I was telling my friend who didn’t go here about Nativity, I would say that it’s a place that gives you a good education, has fun field trips, and that the teachers are the best because they let us have fun while learning!
As we look ahead, the future is full of promise. Nativity remains deeply committed to accompanying students on their journey from middle school through young adulthood. Strategic priorities include deepening academic enrichment, strengthening mental health supports, expanding graduate opportunities, and investing in faculty development. With the strength of its community and the generosity of its supporters, Nativity is poised to lead boldly into its next chapter. “
ELIJAH, 7TH GRADE:
Nativity is different this year because, first, we accepted 37 new students!! I have seen Nativity change a lot with the development of the girls division. I like how new classes are coming in and learning the Nativity way and how to live out the four pillars. It is also much louder, in a good way, and just feels more alive as a school.
I feel like now that the school is bigger, you don’t see as many adults as when I was in 5th grade. This is good because you build stronger relationships with the fewer teachers you have, and can go to them on a bad day and talk to them. But you also wonder what the other teachers are doing that you don’t get to see.
MILAN, 6TH GRADE:
A few words to describe the Bowman class are: loud, of course, nosey sometimes, and very lively. We’re also very kind to each other — most days!!
LIBERTY, 7TH GRADE:
The community is so different from my old school. It’s just like a big family, a big warming family. Everyone in the school is friends basically.
ABENA, 7TH GRADE:
What is different about this school from my old school is the back to back events. At my old school, we barely had events or maybe just once in a while. But at Nativity there’s family night, family meetings, Nativity actually communicates with each other to make sure we’re all on the same page.
THANK YOU FOR MANY YEARS OF DEDICATION AND SERVICE: MS. DELIBERTO AND MR. INGALLS!
At the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the Nativity Worcester community said goodbye to Ms. Elizabeth Deliberto, our Senior Vice President and Director of Advancement and Graduate Support, and Mr. Nate Ingalls, our Leadership Gifts Officer, after six and five years of service. We wish them the best of luck as they move on to other opportunities, and are grateful for the incredible contributions they made to our community!
HIGH SCHOOL GRAD HIGHLIGHTS:
THE JOE LANE SCHOLAR AWARD AND BANCROFT SCHOLAR AWARD
At the end of his freshman year at Saint John’s, Devion Nyarko (pictured left) from the 2024 Chardin Class was selected as one of four freshmen to receive the Joe Lane Scholars Award. Here is a description of the award: The Joe Lane Scholar Awards are named for one of the true legends of Saint John’s. Mr. Lane, a member of the class of 1956, returned to Saint John’s after college to teach, coach, and serve as the Director of Physical Education. The award recipients are a select group of freshmen who have already demonstrated the traits that made Mr. Lane a legend in our school community; leadership, loyalty, and strong character.
Brian Gonzalez (pictured right) also from the 2024 Chardin Class, received a similar distinction at Bancroft School. He was highlighted as a strong scholar at the end of his Freshman year.
Congratulations to Devion and Brian, and we look forward to continuing celebrating their successes in the future!

OUR GRADS OF THE MONTH!
Each month, our Graduate Support Team sends out a digital newsletter to our 277 graduates, graduate families, and community partners. The newsletter includes key events in the Nativity community, learning opportunities for graduates, job openings in the Worcester community, and much more. Each month, the Graduate Support Team selects a Grad of the Month to feature. Grad of the Month spotlights a graduate who has been living out our four pillars of strength, scholarship, character, and service, wherever they are in their journey post-Nativity. Whether they are in high school, college, the workforce, or volunteering in the community, our Nativity Grads are doing amazing things and we love to see them thrive! The following graduates were selected as Grads of the Month during the 2024-2025 school year.
“
Being a Nativity graduate means I consistently hold myself to a higher standard than my peers. I take pride in upholding my reputation, integrity, and the values of Nativity, knowing I am a proud product of its legacy.
Being a graduate of NSW feels like belonging. You are a member of a large and special family. You can meet with grads as “old” as I and recent grads who are freshmen in high school and have a lot of the same experiences and things to talk about. I am the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging for Seven Hills Foundation and Affiliates. The best thing about working in my role and for Seven Hills, is the scale of the community. The organization is in three states, and employs more than 4,000 individuals. So I get to meet so many unique and talented folks who do really good work. Outside of work I am a father of two (6 and 4). I recently moved back to Worcester, so I am loving being outside and the city has so much to offer. I hike (yes in Worcester), and love to eat places I know the owners are BIPOC and are from the city (Shout out to Woo Juice!). I also write, and I make art; paint and mixed collage. Advice to younger students: At some point you will notice that imagination stops being rewarded and in fact feels like people want you to stop imagining. Don’t stop using your imagination.

What is your favorite NSW memory?
My favorite memory is definitely going to Washington D.C. with my classmates. So many good memories and funny moments! The food was amazing and it was just a good time I could never forget. My biggest goal is to make it where I want to be in life. I’m still trying to figure it out but as long as I reach all the goals I set for myself I know that I’ll be a step closer. One of my dreams is to have a big family and to be a present father. I don’t quite know yet what I want to do once I graduate, I have to make it through college first. Advice for the younger generation… Just keep going! No matter how hard life gets, there’s always going to be better days.
OCTOBER
Lander Perez Mveng Class of 2021
When I went to Nativity, it became a home and an important stepping stone that I won’t ever forget about no matter how far I am on my journey. Now that I’m older, Nativity is a place where I will always be happy to see familiar faces. I can always go back there for whatever the reason is, whether it’s for academic purposes, seeking guidance with career or job searching, or even if I want to get away from home for some time. My favorite Nativity memory was winning MVP my 6th grade year for basketball and adding two chips to the banner that year. Advice I would give to any younger Nativity student is make sure that you do everything at 100% and do everything with a goal in mind! It’ll help keep you motivated. Make sure to embrace whatever journey you’re on no matter how hard it gets and remember that all the adversity you face is preparing you for the real challenges ahead of you when you leave as a Nativity student.
NOVEMBER
Jayvian Bush Espinal Class of 2020
I recently graduated class of 2024. It feels amazing that through my years of high school I met a lot of new people who really have changed my mindset, I also learned a lot of new ways to be successful. I went through my ups and downs through school but it’s normal we make mistakes it’s all about how you react to those mistakes. Currently I went to a trade school to become an electrician, I got my class b journeyman’s license for electrical work and working for a big company in Boston. Some advice I would give is to not rush into things. Life is a journey, and you don’t have to do everything at once.
FEBRUARY
Noah
Miles Espinal Class of 2020
I’m currently attending Suffolk University! The best part of being here, like any on-campus or away-from-home experience, is that my character is constantly being tested. You may ask, “How is that the best part?” It’s because after every trial, I grow even prouder of the person I’m becoming.
One of my aspirations is to be someone who makes a meaningful impact. No matter where I go, who I talk to, or what I do, I want to have a positive impact on those around me.
MARCH
Javian Allen Grande Class of 2022
The support I receive from Nativity almost daily is overwhelming, even after graduating I still feel closely connected to Nativity. When I went to Nativity, for most of the time I just saw it as school. Now that I’ve graduated I can appreciate the good they have done for me and I see it as my second home. My dream is to make a positive change in this world. I aspire to make this world better than it was before I was born into it and I work towards this everyday.
MAY
Joveto De Carvalho Xavier Class of 2007
Graduating the Nativity School of Worcester is one of my proudest accomplishments in life. It’s a blessing and a flex to be part of such an impressive community. Now I work at TJX, and one of my favorite things about working there is that sometimes I run into Helene Horan Winn, who used to be my Evening Study tutor at Nativity! My favorite Nativity memory was meeting my best friend. Funny enough, it wasn’t when I was a student but when I came back as a teaching fellow. Her name is Ms. Brosnihan and we have a wedding coming up.
Brian Gonzalez Chardin Class of 2024
APRIL
Nathan Jean-Pierre Chardin Class of 2024
It’s a bittersweet feeling, I’m glad that I graduated, but I miss Nativity. Nativity was like a big family to me, I think my classmates can agree when I say that we made lifelong friends there. A dream of mine is to get into law or be a part of the justice system.
I am currently attending Worcester Technical High School. The best thing about WTHS is the trades and how they set you up for after high school and help you create your own future. My goal for the future is just to be somebody important and make my parents proud. Some advice I have is to make the most of it here at Nativity before you have to leave. Get out of your comfort zone more often and just enjoy it while you can.
JUNE
Shedricke Mulbah Mayer Class of 2013
Currently I work at Columbia Tech Engineering as an Electrical Engineer. I love working in my role because I get to design new innovative products…Nativity meant family when I went here, and it still does.
FOUNDATION OF OUR SUMMER SESSION MEET THE INTERNS
THE
Each summer, Nativity Worcester hires a group of interns tasked with a wide variety of responsibilities. From setting up for end-of-year events and preparing the building for the summer to co-teaching classes and chaperoning field trips, we truly ask a lot of these hard-working individuals. This year, we had an exceptional group; read more about them here!
SUZIE TINOCO
From: Dallas, TX
College: Senior at the College of the Holy Cross Field of Study: Sociology and Education
HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR INTERNSHIP:
Graduation was a highlight of my internship so far. Although I didn’t know the students, the different speeches and slideshow presentations made me feel like I’d been a part of the Nativity community forever. Seeing all the parents proud of their students was also heartwarming. Moving to a different chapter of life is bittersweet, but that day, everyone in the room was cheering loudly for each student as they celebrated their accomplishments.
ABBY WHITE
From: Holden, MA
College: Senior at the College of the Holy Cross Field of Study: Psychology and Education
HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR INTERNSHIP: The highlight of the internship so far has been the 8th-grade graduation. It was very powerful to see how strong the community is at Nativity. It was clear how deeply the staff knew and cared about each and every student and how close the entire Swamy class became over the 4 years at Nativity. This type of community is a very important part of positive growth and developing good relationships.
RUSTY-LEE AGYEMANG
Graduate of the Ricci Class of 2019
From: Worcester, MA
College: Junior at Boston University Field of Study: Pre-Law
HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR INTERNSHIP: The highlight of the internship so far has definitely been the Accepted Students Day. It was a joy to see a bunch of new faces and some familiar faces who will be coming to Nativity. It’s fascinating to see these new students and their “obliviousness” to the wonders of Nativity. Since I’ve been through the waves of the school, I cannot wait to see how they’ll transform into young wonderful members of society.
MALCOLM NELSON
Graduate of the Ricci Class of 2019
From: Worcester, MA
College: Junior at George Washington University
Field of Study: Political Science and Business, Pre-Law
HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR INTERNSHIP: What has been a highlight of the internship so far has been getting to work with the other interns on various tasks.
JADYN DARKWA
Graduate of the Ricci Class of 2019
From: Worcester, MA College: Junior at Boston College Field of Study: Economics and Math
HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR INTERNSHIP: The highlight of the internship so far was our very first day, after a relatively “easy” day on the job, the faculty treated the new interns to lunch at Pinecroft Dairy in West Boylston. This lunch provided me with an opportunity to familiarize myself with the newer staff and my fellow interns, as well as catch up with my old teachers.
MEFFI HERRERA
Graduate of the Anchieta Class of 2018
From: Worcester, MA
College: Senior at Assumption University Field of Study: Accounting and Finance
HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR INTERNSHIP: The highlight so far has been returning to a familiar environment and reconnecting with the mission of Nativity from a new perspective—as a mentor and intern. It’s exciting to be on the other side now and see how things come together behind the scenes.
CIT SPOTLIGHT
Ashton Daniels (pictured left) and Dan Sabogal (pictured right), both graduates of our Swamy Class of 2025, volunteered this summer as Counselors-in-Training (CIT). They worked non-stop to ensure that each of our 98 students felt supported and had a good experience during summer session. From assisting teachers in class to running stations at field day, they did it all. In the fall, Ashton will be a freshman at Concord Academy and Dan will be starting his Bancroft School journey. We are excited for our CITs’ next chapter, and look forward to cheering them on!
Brian McClatchy’s Inspiring Story of Making a Planned Gift for Nativity School of Worcester (written by Brian)
When my wife, Joanne Glavin McClatchy, accepted the offer to become the school’s founding Executive Director in 2002, I was also invited by the Board to join her in bringing the vision to life. At the time, we were the only two employees, but we dreamed big, with unwavering support from the Board of Trustees who believed in our ability to create something exceptional.
The school’s incredible success and growth over the years have been truly inspiring. It’s not just the students who dedicate themselves to reaching their full potential; Nativity works closely with entire families, fostering a strong sense of community and support. Witnessing this transformation over the past two decades has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. The addition of the Julie Power Girls Division in 2024 was a dream come true, further expanding the school’s reach and impact. Of course, with success comes new challenges and the need for continued growth. Nativity has risen to meet these challenges through successful Capital Campaigns, ensuring that the school continues to thrive.
In September 2022, Joanne and I were proud to visit Nativity and give the school over $600,000, designated for their Graduate Support Program. Tragically, in March 2023, Joanne passed away unexpectedly. In the months that followed, I began reflecting on how I could continue our shared commitment
A PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE THE
NATIVITY FOREVER SOCIETY
to Nativity. After discussions with our financial advisors and an attorney, I decided to establish a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) with Nativity named as the sole beneficiary.
This decision feels like the perfect way to honor Joanne’s legacy and ensure that Nativity can continue to provide lifechanging opportunities for generations of students. Joanne always envisioned creating a lasting impact at Nativity, and I believe this gift will do just that. Nativity’s first graduates, the “Pioneers” of 2006 and 2007, have gone on to accomplish extraordinary things, as have many others who followed. Over 260 graduates have exceeded expectations, creating opportunities for themselves and for their communities. Nativity Worcester is more than a school – it is a family that continues to grow, give back, and make a lasting difference.
What began as a small seed in Worcester 23 years ago has flourished into a vibrant institution that sends graduates to top high schools, colleges, and universities across the country. Today, Nativity continues to help students excel and reach their full potential, and I am proud to contribute to ensuring its success for years to come. I encourage others to consider including Nativity in their estate planning and think about the powerful, enduring impact we can all have on the lives of these students. It brings me great joy to be a part of the Nativity Worcester Forever Planned Giving Society, and it is an honor to do so in memory of my beloved wife, Joanne Glavin McClatchy, and her vision for this remarkable School.
If you are seeking a meaningful way to leave your personal and philanthropic legacy, planned giving through Nativity School of Worcester may be right for you. A planned gift will make a difference in the lives of our students and graduates for years to come! A bequest gives you the flexibility to change your mind, as well as continued access to your assets, while making an immeasurable impact on the Nativity Worcester community. To learn more about planned giving, visit our website at www.nativityworcester.org/help/ planned-giving, or contact our President, Tom McKenney at tmckenney@nativityworcester. org or 508-799-0100.

MISSION STATEMENT
Nativity School of Worcester is an accredited, independent middle school that provides a holistic, tuition-free, faith-based education rooted in Ignatian values to students of all faiths from underresourced communities. Drawing upon four pillars - strength, scholarship, character, and service - a Nativity education inspires self-discovery, responsibility, spiritual growth, and a lifelong dedication to learning.
