National Pawn and Jewelry, NC

The NPA stands not above anyone, but as a reflection of what we, its members, make it.

Dear Fellow Pawnbrokers,

As my term as President of the National Pawnbrokers Association concludes this July, I wanted to share a final reflection with you all. Serving in this role for the past two years has been an immense pleasure and a true privilege.

The NPA isn’t a faceless corporation. At its heart, it’s you and me –everyday pawnbrokers. Our Board of Directors, committee chairs, and the dedicated individuals working behind the scenes are all volunteers. Some of us operate multiple stores, while many, myself included, manage a single location. We’re supported by a fantastic administrative team that helps us achieve our objectives, but make no mistake: pawnbrokers power the NPA.

If you love what you do and genuinely care about the future of this industry,

getting involved offers immense value. We want your ideas, and we need your input. How has business been lately? What are you struggling with? What programming is missing that your team could benefit from? It’s okay if you’ve never served on a board or a committee before; your passion and experience as a pawnbroker are what truly matter.

I understand that running a business is all-consuming. Your team is stretched thin, your schedule is packed, and your plate is full. The thought of volunteering can easily feel like a sacrifice of precious time with your family or time you simply don’t have. But the truth is, your involvement in this association isn’t a sacrifice, it’s an investment in your livelihood. For me personally, the hours I volunteer are minuscule compared to the longterm return it gives my business. We all share one overarching goal: to protect what we’ve diligently built before external forces dictate what we can or cannot do.

Volunteering can be whatever you make it. I hate being away from my family, so I bring them to NPA events. This year, my family joined

me on Capitol Hill for the Legislative Conference. Not only did I get the best of both worlds—enjoying time with family while supporting the industry—I also had the pleasure of giving my two young granddaughters an up-close look at what it means to stand up and advocate for what matters.

Being part of this association and its many impactful initiatives is incredibly rewarding. I invite you to experience it for yourself. There’s a seat at the table with your name on it.

The NPA doesn’t stand above anyone; it stands as a reflection of what we, its members, make it.

I am confident that Bill Dawson will continue to lead the association forward with dedication and vision. I encourage each of you to continue your engagement and support for the NPA, as our collective strength is our greatest asset.

Thank you for your trust, your hard work, and your unwavering commitment to the pawn industry.

The POWER of the Pawn Industry

Dear NPA Members,

As we step into the heart of summer, I’m filled with immense pride and gratitude for the momentum our industry has built over the past few months. This issue of our magazine arrives at an exciting time—on the heels of a highly successful Legislative Conference held in Washington DC, where we had 60 pawnbrokers with over 100 scheduled appointments on Capitol Hill. We wrapped up that highly anticipated event just ahead of our much-anticipated Pawn Expo Convention.

First, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in our Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Your presence, energy, and advocacy made a powerful impression on lawmakers and reinforced the vital role pawnbrokers play in communities across the country. Together, we delivered a unified message, secured valuable conversations with key policymakers, and advanced our mission to protect and promote the interests of our members.

The success of this conference was not just measured in meetings or handshakes—it was seen in the strength of our collective voice and the growing recognition of pawnbrokers as a legitimate and essential part of the financial services landscape. It’s proof of what we can accomplish when we stand together.

Now, we turn our attention to what is undoubtedly the highlight of our year: Pawn Expo. This cornerstone event is more than just a convention—it’s a celebration of our industry, a hub of innovation, and a platform for progress. Each year, Pawn Expo brings together hundreds of pawnbrokers, vendors, and industry experts from across the country for an unforgettable experience that educates, energizes, and inspires.

This year’s Expo will feature an incredible lineup of keynote speakers, hands-on training, and breakout sessions designed to address the challenges you face and the opportunities ahead. Whether you’re interested in refining your operations, navigating regulatory changes, exploring new revenue streams, or simply connecting with peers who understand your business—Pawn Expo delivers.

Our exhibit hall will once again be packed with top-tier vendors offering the products, technology, and services tailored to pawnbrokers. It’s the perfect place to find fresh ideas, discover cutting-edge solutions, and build relationships that can take your business to the next level.

But beyond the education and exhibits, what truly sets Pawn Expo apart is the community. There’s something

powerful about being in a room filled with people who share your experiences, your values, and your passion for this profession. The energy is unmatched, the conversations are real, and the connections are lasting.

As you read through this issue, I hope you feel the pride and potential that define our industry. Thank you for being a part of this journey and for all you do to make our association stronger every day.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Pawn Expo 2025!

In an Unpredictable Climate, Proactive Advocacy Protects Your Business

The temperature has been hot in Washington, D.C. since the start of the Trump Administration and a new Congress that has witnessed many substantial changes. For months, most of the oxygen in the Capitol has been consumed with the consideration of a large budget reconciliation package. The highly partisan dynamics surrounding this package have many observers questioning what will happen to the balance of power in the midterm elections next year. One thing is clear: In an unpredictable political climate, the pendulum of power swings between Republican and Democratic control. For pawnbrokers, showing up is the best plan for business continuity.

These words have been a theme for Team GRC for a number of years with Bill Dawson, NPA Vice President and GRC Chair. Just as insurance is essential before a fire or other disaster, cultivating a relationship

with your elected officials and their staff is a powerful safeguard for any time the pawn industry can be subject to legislative or regulatory concerns. In other words, if you have a house on the beach don’t wait until the hurricane is imminent to get your coverage.

An important opportunity to secure political assurance is to participate in the NPA’s annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. This past May, nearly sixty NPA members from across the country took a break from their stores to represent the pawn industry to Congress. Attendees conducted over 100 meetings arranged by the hard work of the NPA staff. Prior to going to the Hill, a briefing was conducted to go over strategy, talking points and provided leave-behind materials.

In addition to several great networking opportunities with fellow pawnbrokers, the central focus at this year’s conference was to educate and make friends with House and Senate members and their staff. It is essential

that the Hill offices understand and appreciate what their constituent pawnbrokers do every day.

The reports from the meetings were all very positive, with attendees saying they felt welcome in their representatives’ offices. Some pawnbrokers visited an office for the first time. Others visited members and staff with whom they had met before, which was a nice way to reinforce the relationship.

Every connection with House and Senate offices matters. When the pawn industry has an issue before Congress or a federal agency, these connections personalize the business. They recognize pawnbrokers are small business owners doing what small business owners do, generating a living for their families while providing a unique service to their customers, their constituents. The NPA knows that it is not a question of “if,” but “when” big issues surface. At the NPA, we help secure a favorable outcome by having prepared those connections - our insurance! Having a foundational relationship before making an important ask is essential.

Please attend Pawn Expo in Atlanta this July to hear a live Team GRC update and to meet the GRC team. Please be sure to inquire about joining us at the Legislative Conference next spring. Make your registrations for Pawn Expo now and secure your hotel reservations. We look forward to seeing you!

Cliff Andrews CapCity Advocates

This year, my trip to the Legislative Conference came with a literal twist—of my left foot! I arrived in D.C. sporting an orthopedic boot but was determined to power through a full day of Capitol Hill meetings.

We initially tried to snag a wheelchair from the Capitol Rotunda, but those are only for tours and couldn’t leave the building. So, I decided to tough it out without a wheelchair – a brilliant plan which lasted about five minutes. My hopes were dashed the moment we stepped into the first Senate office building.

Thankfully, I was rolling with two of Georgia’s finest, Ben and Joel Levinson of Dynasty Jewelry & Loan, and they weren’t about to let me miss a single thing.

Our first meeting was at Senator Raphael Warnock’s office. Before we began, we explained my predicament to one of his staffers. She’d never handled a request like that before but immediately sprang into action! She figured out the whole process, trekked to the Rotunda, checked out a wheelchair, and wheeled it all the way back—no short stroll! Thanks to that wheelchair, I fully participated in our next meeting at Senator Jon Ossoff’s office. Ben and Joel took turns chauffeuring me through

NPA member Lisa Little shares how putting her worst foot forward led to a unexpected advocacy adventure and success on Capitol Hill.

the Senate buildings. By day’s end, they were probably more exhausted than I was, and I secretly loved the VIP treatment.

After our Senate meetings, we had to return the chair as it couldn’t cross to the House side. Senator Warnock’s amazing staffer then personally escorted us through underground tunnels, helped us through security, rode the tram with us to our next meeting, and returned the wheelchair. Again, major props for that walk!

In the tunnel, we spotted Congressman Hank Johnson, a true friend to pawn shops. He’s visited both Dynasty Jewelry & Loan and my shop, Fieldstone Jewelry

& Pawn. I’d even chatted with him via my shop’s Ring camera during his visit a couple weeks earlier, an unusual but memorable exchange. He recognized Joel immediately, and when I spoke, he remembered my voice from our Ring camera conversation. We laughed and I asked about the fishing poles he bought.

I also introduced him to Senator Warnock’s staffer, who later told me it was her first time meeting him and that she really appreciated the introduction.

When we arrived at Congressman Johnson’s office, his staffer pulled the same heroic move—walking all the way to the Rotunda and bringing back a wheelchair for the House side. Congressman Johnson even passed through again while we were there, greeting Ben like an old friend and stopping for another warm conversation.

All in all, we completed four House and two Senate meetings. There’s no way I could have managed without the incredible help of those dedicated staffers and my knights in shining armor, Ben and Joel Levinson.

If you’ve never joined us for Hill Day, I hope you will next time. You’ll build real relationships, advocate for our industry, and maybe even bump into a Congressman in a tunnel! I can’t promise a wheelchair adventure, but if it happens—I call shotgun!

Taking this time to educate them on what we do and why we do it is really important. Should one day we have an ‘ask’ for them to help defend the pawn industry, we already have an established relationship thanks to the years of groundwork that we’ve been doing.”

Bike Index & LeadsOnline: Stopping Bike Theft in Their Tracks

The most widely used bike registry on the planet now integrates with the nation’s largest pawn search system. This partnership isn’t just streamlining recovery for owners and law enforcement, though. It’s also giving pawn shops an extra layer of protection and highlighting the crucial role they play in stemming the flow of stolen goods.

As the weather warms from May to September, more bikes hit the road—and unfortunately, so do bike thieves. This period, dubbed “Bike Theft Season,” sees a significant surge in stolen bicycles each year. The 2025 Annual Bike Theft Report revealed that 2.4 million adult bicycles are stolen in the U.S. annually, totaling over $1.4 billion. This widespread issue calls for hypervigilance in pawn shops, where ensuring the legitimacy of merchandise isn’t just ethical business, it’s key to maintaining legal compliance and a trustworthy reputation.

Enter Bike Index, a non-profit bike registry that now integrates with LeadsOnline, the country’s largest online system used by law enforcement and pawn shops to track transactions of secondhand merchandise.

For years, Bike Index has served as a free online database where individuals can register their bikes and report them stolen. The platform was born from co-founder Bryan Hance’s own frustrating experience with bike theft and the lack of centralized resources for recovery. This personal frustration led him to create a free online database where victims could report stolen bikes and pawnbrokers, along with bike shops and the general public, could check serial numbers before purchasing.

“It’s kind of impossible to ask every police department in the nation if a bike is stolen,” Hance explained in a recent interview on the Darknet Diaries podcast. “But when there’s a nice, simple site online that will tell you, well, that made it easier to check.”

The integration with LeadsOnline enables pawnbrokers to automatically cross-reference serial numbers against Bike Index’s extensive database of stolen bikes, complete with owner-provided photographs and bicycle configuration details to further assist with identification.

“Considering all that pawnbrokers are up against—intense regulations, undeserved political scrutiny, and public misconceptions, even an initiative as small as the Bike Index/LeadsOnline integration can go a long way to show that we are part of the solution, not the problem.”

Thousands of recovery stories are shared on bikeindex.org, many of which credit pawn shops for recovering the stolen bikes. In June 2025, Natalie posted, “My bike was received at Cash Canada Pawn shop, who immediately looked up the serial number on Bike Index and returned it!” Another user, Hyl, shared, “An honest pawn broker checked Bike Index, then reported the attempted sale to the Edmonton Police Service’s Pawn Detail.”

George, another grateful user, wrote, “The pawn shop was excellent, and apparently is renowned around the area for helping recover people’s stolen bikes in this way.”

By utilizing resources like Bike Index, the value is threefold: First, it serves as a helpful tool for complying with regulations, which often require maintaining records and taking steps to avoid buying stolen goods. Second, it aids recovery and prevents stolen items from re-entering the market. Third, it demonstrates a proactive approach to responsible business practices, which in turn builds trust with both customers and law enforcement.

Considering all that pawnbrokers are up against—intense regulations, undeserved political scrutiny, and public misconceptions, even an initiative as small as the Bike Index/LeadsOnline integration can go a long way to show that we are part of the solution, not the problem.

A final testimonial on bikeindex.org underscores this sentiment: “[I] found out that Pawn Shops are honestly very reputable businesses who also use Bike Index and serial code registration (BWI) to ensure they are not selling anything stolen.”

Hiring leaders is a challenge for any business, but it’s particularly tough in an industry as unique and misunderstood as pawn. The search for exceptional leadership becomes even trickier because, as Joey Leza of Buffalo Jewelry & Loan and PawnMore wisely notes, “the good candidates already have good jobs.”

So, how do you attract the best person for the job if they aren’t even looking for one? This very dilemma was at the heart of Leza’s recent NPA Lead & Learn session, Hiring Strong Leadership, where he shared proven strategies to find and keep great leaders.

The Secret Weapon: Your Company Culture

Above all else, Leza stresses, a strong company culture is your most powerful differentiator. He gives these examples from his own business:

1. The stores close daily at 6:00 PM and remain closed on Sundays to allow for ‘family days.’ This is a huge draw for candidates, especially parents, who may be missing crucial family time due to long work hours.

2. Offering solid benefits can make your company much more appealing. For Leza, this includes flexible schedules, generous PTO (he offers up to four weeks of vacation), 401k matching, health and life insurance, and even daycare assistance or support with housing.

3. Leza makes it a point to remember birthdays with a personal call, check in on family members, and ask about their kids’ activities. He explains, “I want these guys to know that we love them, and we appreciate them, and despite what they make, what they do for us ... I want them to be in our company for many, many years down the road.”

The Power of Your Story

To attract leaders for your business, you need to sell them on it. In an interview, this involves sharing the company’s journey, your own experiences in the business, and the positive impact on your customers and community. Leza, for instance, likes to share how his “little bitty mom and pop store” grew into the largest privately-owned pawn shop in the U.S., emphasizing its role in helping single parents and college students. This human element can be especially compelling to those unfamiliar with the pawn world.

Leza suggests talking through your story beforehand with someone who will be honest with you. Sit down with your partner, current employees or team members and have a formal interview, because “they’re gonna tell you what’s important to them, things that you may not have known about.”

During interviews, Leza makes notes about candidates’ interests, family, or even pets, and references them in follow-up conversations. He shares, “I want them to know Highlights From a Recent

To attract leaders for your business, you need to sell them on it.

“What’s your worst attribute?”). Rather than dwelling on a candidate’s weaknesses, focus instead on their strengths and how your company can help them grow. As Leza puts it, “I love hiring people that have smiling faces that care about the community, and... we’ll teach you all the rest of the stuff.”

So, Where Do You Find Great Leaders?

Leza offered this advice on finding and maintaining a strong leadership pipeline:

 Consider candidates from fast-paced environments that require strong multitasking and leadership skills. Leza has found incredible talent in the food industry (think executive chefs) who excel at driving teams and delegating under pressure.

 Target people from companies that are shutting down or undergoing corporate closures (e.g., former Rite Aid or Toys R Us employees). Their transferable skills are valuable, even if they hadn’t considered the pawn industry before.

 Nurture your existing team’s leadership potential by offering promotions and celebrating their individual achievements. This investment fosters loyalty and prepares them for future growth.

 Re-think old ideas about “professional appearance.” While a proper dress code is important, be open to candidates with visible tattoos or diverse backgrounds. Leza shared how two of his top leaders have extensive arm tattoos, which actually spark positive conversations with customers. He believes your team should reflect the community you serve, making your business more relatable and approachable.

In short, attracting great leaders in the pawn industry is about more than just a job offer. It’s about building an amazing company culture, sharing an inspiring vision, making real personal connections, and consistently investing in your current team.

SHOOTING RANGE MANAGEMENT

ECOMMERCE

Managers and supervisors should be communicative and engaged with employees, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

In extreme cases , a manager’s actions may gradually cause an employee to voluntarily leave — a non-confrontational approach known as “quiet firing.” Unlike traditional terminations, quiet firing (or “silent firing”) happens under the radar. Employees quit due to a hostile, unclear, or poorly managed work environment, whether or not that outcome was intentional.

What Is Quiet Firing?

Quiet firing refers to employees resigning because management creates a negative work environment. Despite the name, it doesn’t involve actual firing. Instead, workers may be pushed into disliking their jobs, feeling isolated, or underperforming—eventually choosing to resign.

It can fall under constructive discharge, which the U.S. Department of Labor defines as a resignation that isn’t truly voluntary due to a hostile or coercive work setting. Constructive discharge may be illegal depending on state laws.

Examples of quiet firing include:

• Gradually reducing responsibilities

• Excluding employees from meetings or projects

• Assigning undesirable tasks

• Signaling that an employee’s presence is unwelcome

When done deliberately, quiet firing is a passive strategy to avoid direct confrontation. But the short-term ease of avoiding difficult conversations may lead to long-term legal, ethical, and financial consequences.

Recognizing quiet firing is key to preventing or addressing it. Though subtle, the following signs may indicate it’s happening:

• Lack of promotions or career growth

• Denied raises, bonuses, or benefits

• Micromanagement or reduced responsibilities

• Overly critical or absent feedback

• Social exclusion

• No support from leadership

• Unreasonable workload or deadlines

Quiet firing can stem from bad management, restructuring, performance concerns, or unresolved conflicts. It may also result from bias or favoritism.

The impact extends beyond individuals. Affected employees may feel stressed, insecure, and demotivated. Witnesses may lose trust in leadership, lowering morale and productivity. For employers, consequences can include damage to reputation, legal exposure, and difficulty retaining talent.

How To Address Quiet Firing

Addressing quiet firing requires intentional action by leadership. Here are some strategies:

Encourage Open Communication

Promote honest conversations between employees and management to raise concerns and clarify expectations.

Workers may be pushed into disliking their jobs, feeling isolated, or underperforming— eventually choosing to resign.

Conduct Regular Performance Reviews

Provide feedback early to address performance issues before they grow.

Foster a Supportive Environment

Build a culture where employees feel respected, heard, and safe to speak up.

Assess and Train Managers

Offer training to improve managerial skills. Use tools like 360 or skip-level reviews to gather feedback.

Implement Exit Interviews

Departing employees can reveal ongoing issues with managers or processes.

Enable Career Pathing and Lateral Moves

Give employees multiple career development options.

Recognize Achievements

Show appreciation for hard work to boost morale and productivity.

Promote Emotional Intelligence

Managers who lead with empathy build stronger relationships with their teams.

Use Progressive Discipline

Address issues directly with transparent, structured conversations that guide improvement.

Keep Managers and Employees Engaged

Quiet firing can damage trust, morale, and productivity—and may carry legal risks. Managers should avoid this practice entirely.

Equip supervisors with training, tools, and a clear mandate to engage and support their teams through honest communication and fair leadership.

The 2025 NPA Legislative Conference saw twenty pawnbrokers under 40 in attendance, a record turnout for this event. Beyond the numbers, though, the energy and enthusiasm of this group demonstrated a strong commitment of the next generation of leaders in our industry.

The young professionals (YPs) kicked things off with a special dinner on the first night, thanks to GIA’s sponsorship. This gathering was a chance for both new and returning attendees to connect, share their stories and best practices, and build confidence before their important meetings with lawmakers. It was especially helpful for first-timers like Byron Horton. As he put it: “You see all these ads, these commercials, but actually going into the Capitol, being on the Hill, you really get firsthand experience. It’s a moment you won’t forget.”

The night included a fun question for the table: What would you be doing if you weren’t a pawnbroker? The spectrum of answers—everything from Marine Biologist to Produce Farmer, History Teacher, and even Pro Soccer Player—showed how people from all walks of life are brought together by a shared passion for pawn.

To prepare for the Legislative Conference, young professionals were invited to a “What To Expect” webinar hosted by the NPA Government Relations Committee and sponsored by GIA. The session allowed attendees to learn strategies and ask questions to help prepare for their visits with policymakers.

Alabama

Tyler Wilson, President, Alabama Pawnbrokers Association

Things are heating up in Alabama — and we’re not just talking about the weather. We’re gearing up for one of our favorite events of the year: the Dixie Educational Conference & Trade Show, taking place this September at the beautiful Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Alabama.

In addition to conference planning, we’ve also made some great strides on the legislative front. We’ve recently made changes to our lobbying representation, and we’re excited about the direction it’s taking us. With stronger advocacy in place, we’re confident in our ability to protect and advance the interests of Alabama pawnbrokers at the state level. We’re also proud to roll out a new member benefit: our weekly email series, PawnNotes. It’s a quick, practical read packed with tips, industry updates, and tools to help our members stay sharp and informed.

This year marks 25 years of Dixie, and we’re celebrating with a standout lineup of speakers, vendors, and networking opportunities — all in a relaxed, beachfront setting. We’d love to see our friends from across the country join us. NPA members are always welcome, and Dixie is the perfect place to connect, recharge, and take home fresh ideas for your store. There’s real momentum here in Alabama, and we’re proud of the work being done across the state. We hope to see you in Orange Beach this September — come be part of something special.

Colorado

Steven Adsit, President, Colorado Pawnbrokers Association

Colorado’s firearms industry has been dramatically changed, and we continue to see more challenges for pawn on the horizon. We are working hard at navigating the changes and planning for the future. As always, we are still working to get every pawnbroker in the state into our 100% Free Association. Colorado Pawnbrokers, please talk to your neighbors and make sure everyone is signed up! coloradopawnbrokers@ gmail.com

Florida

Joshua Davis, President, Florida Pawnbrokers Association

This legislative session, a group not affiliated with the Florida Pawnbrokers Association was successful in adding language to our state statute allowing for our pawnbroker transaction forms to be in printed or digital format. Our team added additional language to give the option to the pawnbroker, not law enforcement as we did not want to see pawnbrokers forced away from a software system that does not support digital forms.

In addition, there was an attempt of unknown origin to create a statewide pawn database to gather our pawn transactions

as already required by our statute. Currently there are multiple different systems in place for data collection based on the local jurisdiction. Some use systems built by local law enforcement, and some use Leads Online. If enacted, this would create a single statewide database collection system. This bill was modified to be a Feasibility Study on the use and maintenance of such a system by the state.

Lastly, I have recently been appointed to be a member of the Florida Consumers Council Advisory Board. In this forum I meet with top officials at the Florida Department of Agriculture to discuss and share ongoings of the pawn industry with representatives from other industries. If anyone has a topic of conversation you would like me to bring up at these meetings, please let me know: josh@gcpawn.com.

Georgia

Lisa Little, President, Georgia Pawnbrokers Association

The 2025 legislative session under the Gold Dome has concluded, but the Georgia Pawnbrokers Association (GPA) continues to monitor bills that may affect our industry. Georgia operates on a two-year legislative cycle, so legislation that did not advance this year may still move forward in 2026. Our efforts remain focused on advocating for traditional pawnbrokers and ensuring we are not swept into policies targeting unrelated financial sectors. Our lobbyist, Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton of Topspin Strategies, has been instrumental in helping us communicate this message clearly to state lawmakers.

In April, GPA President and NPA Secretary Lisa Little, GPA Treasurer Ben Levinson, and GPA Membership Chair Joel Levinson attended the NPA Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. While there, they met with the offices of four U.S. Representatives and both U.S. Senators from Georgia to discuss the critical role pawnbrokers play in our communities.

All Georgia pawnbrokers are encouraged to join our private Facebook group for peer support and updates at facebook.com/groups/georgiapawnbrokers. Membership in GPA or NPA is not required to participate. To learn more or join the Georgia Pawnbrokers Association, visit www. georgiapawnbrokers.org.

Hawaii

Richard Dan, Vice President, Hawaii Pawnbrokers Association Aloha everyone! This is Richard Dan, reaching out with a quick update from the Hawaii Pawnbrokers Association. We’re happy to report there have been no significant changes to pawnbroking laws in Hawaii recently. Our pawnbrokers continue to make a difference in the community, notably by supporting fire victims and fostering partnerships with local charitable organizations. We’re always looking for ways to

better serve our members and are open to suggestions for new programs or services. We want to recognize our own John Spiker, who has served as our President for decades and is a co-founder of our association. His dedication is truly inspiring!

Louisiana

Jeremy Powell, President, Louisiana Pawnbrokers Association

On June 3, Dr. Wayne Babovich and I were honored to present at a workshop for auditors from the Louisiana Office of Financial Institutions. This is a private event that the state hosts annually for the continuing education of the auditors who regulate our industry. Our presentation focused on educating these auditors about pawn and secondhand dealer laws and regulations. It was a privilege for the Louisiana Pawnbrokers Association (LPBA) to be asked to conduct this seminar, ensuring those who audit our businesses are well informed.

Oregon

Beth Anundi, President, Oregon Pawnbrokers Association

The 2025 PNW Pawn Conference was a resounding success, and we’re grateful to everyone who made it possible. Over two days, attendees from across the region, the country, and Canada came together to learn, share, and connect. The educational sessions, industry updates, and practical discussions provided real value, and we appreciate the participation and support from every speaker, industry partner, and attendee. We hope you were able to implement in your store(s) what you learned at PNW and that the crazy peacock didn’t follow you home! And next year is set for April 17-19 — mark your calendar!

As we celebrate the momentum of this year’s conference, the Oregon Pawnbrokers Association (OPA) remains committed to advocating for our industry. We are actively working to address and oppose several legislative proposals related to firearms and pawn transactions that could negatively impact our members. Your continued support and engagement are crucial as we navigate these challenges together.

Simplify your gold valuation process with accuracy and ease.

It’s so easy and so fast … Just enter your item's karat and weight, and the Karat Kalculator will instantly estimate your gold's current value. Perfect to accurately evaluate trade-ins or sales, streamline the pricing process for gold scrap, and clearly understand your gold's worth.

It’s the most accurate … The Karat Kalculator ensures precise valuations every time by using historical percentages of what actual 'recoveries’ reflect, versus the ‘mathematical plumb values’ that other apps and karat gold calculators use, which often overstate reality and provide false expectations of what gold scrap lots will actually yield.

Fast. Easy. Accurate. Try it today!

“Understanding the purity of your gold is essential for fair transactions. With our Karat Kalculator, determining your gold’s value has never been easier.” Jack Brown, President, Mid-States Recycling & Refining

Paradise Pawnbrokers

In 1946, Linda Pisano’s great-uncle, Max, worked at a pawn shop in the Bronx. With his boss ready to retire, Max bought the store and partnered with his brothers, Morris and Harry, to start a family business. Nearly 80 years and four generations later, Paradise Pawnbrokers continues to thrive in the heart of the Bronx, with Linda and her son Matthew at the helm.

“I want to see this almost 80-year-old business succeed for another 80-plus years”

For Linda Pisano, the world of pawn was never in her plans. Her ambition lay in the realm of construction, and she “never considered going into the family business.” Instead, she studied engineering and went on to build a career as a construction engineer, tackling major projects for the Port Authority of NY & NJ.

Her son, Matthew Pisano, on the other hand had a childhood dream of joining the family business. His earliest memories are tied to the pawn shop, and the ‘really important job’ his grandfather would give him: counting bundles of one-dollar bills in the vault. “I loved it,” he says. From the tender age of two, Matthew declared he wanted to be like his ‘Papa.’

Though Matthew studied journalism at university, that path ended abruptly in 2012 with the steep decline of print media. “Joining the family business was a no brainer at that point,” Matthew explains. He began working for Linda’s brother, Michael, who ran a separate pawn business in New England. There, Matthew put his writing degree to use, building an e-commerce department from scratch to serve as a new sales outlet for all eight of his uncle’s shops.

Life took an unexpected turn in 2020 when Linda’s cousin, Jason, tragically passed away. Up to that point, Jason had been managing Paradise Pawnbrokers’ dayto-day. Linda, whose involvement had been limited to helping with foreclosures as her father’s health declined,

Cont’d on page 42

found herself learning the ins and outs of daily operations. She leaned on her brother for guidance as well as Matthew, who by then had worked nearly a decade for Michael’s pawn business. Eventually, Matthew joined his mother in the Bronx.

Matthew says his mother’s best advice for stepping into the business wasn’t advice at all, but simply her “trusting me.” He elaborates, “her asking me to take over managing the two original stores and explicitly telling me that they trust in me to be the future of these stores was the best ‘advice’ that I could have received.”

For Linda, the joy of working with Matthew lies in “being able to rely on someone who knows what he’s doing and learning from him.”

when her grandfather ran the business. “Women were not allowed to work there. Now, most of our employees are women.”

Linda and Matthew’s individual strengths now form a complementary whole at Paradise Pawnbrokers. Matthew, representing the fourth generation, handles the daily operations, driven by youthful energy and a bold outlook. Linda, with her deep administrative skills, acts as his sounding board, ensuring the business runs smoothly behind the scenes. She muses about the early days

Outside of work, Linda enjoys gardening, solving The NY Times word games, and cherishing time with her grandson. Matthew, a keen hiker and backpacker, finds his hobbies now revolve entirely around his two-year-old son, with another child on the way. They’re already getting his little one out on the trails, helping him discover a love for the outdoors.

Looking ahead, Matthew’s goal is to open more Paradise Pawnbrokers locations across New York. “An absolute dream of mine would be to pair one of the new stores with an experience, like a speak-easy,” he adds. And while business growth is important to the Pisanos, their greatest reward is knowing the family legacy will continue.

“I want to see this almost 80-year-old business succeed for another 80-plus years,” he says, a sentiment that perfectly captures the enduring spirit of Paradise Pawnbrokers.
