ROAD TRIPS FROM EUROPE JOIN GOLDEN OLDIES The glorious Golden Oldies display at Beaulieu’s International Autojumble brought enthusiasts on adventurous road trips from across Europe to the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Participants’ brought more than 50 historic motors from the 1920s-60s for the impressive line-up, while 33,293 event-goers snapped up bargains from 2,176 stands packed with motoring spares, accessories and automobilia.

Driving more than 1,000 miles from Sweden especially to take part was a 1954 Wolseley 4/44, which had just been put back on the road by Nostalgia magazine – after being unused for 30 years.

Also travelling from the Netherlands was an eye-catching 1952 Singer Roadster 4AD Ute and once-common 1969 Volvo 145, while an SPRING 2020

imposing 1964 Rolls-Royce Phantom V and diminutive but rare 1959 Fairthorpe Ashley Special showed the diverse range of the collection.

Turning heads were an unusual 1963 Ford Cortina Mk1 hearse and 1922 Bentley 3/4.5 Litre that had been a racing car and fire engine in its varied life. A period-perfect 1943 Morris Z van, exactly as it was when in service as a Post Office Telephones engineer’s van, sleek 1969 Marcos 3-litre with space-age styling and rarely-seen 1957 Standard Family Ten parked up amongst Jaguars, Triumphs, Sunbeams, MGs, Austins and Morrises.

The show’s Automart was packed with classic cars for sale and had buyers reaching for their wallets. Rarities included a 1950 Riley RMC convertible, resplendent in bright red with whitewall tyres and priced at £46,995, 1970 Austin 3-Litre at £7,750 and 1955 Messerschmitt KR200 at £29,500.

Projects included a 1936 Armstrong-Siddeley at £13,500 and part-restored 1934 Jaguar SS 12hp Coupe at £32,750, while classics ready

to use ranged from a 1976 Rover 3500S at £5,950 to a tiny 1963 Vespa Ape Tuk Tuk at £5,000. Dealermart also featured a selection of top-condition classics, offered by traders.

The Morgan Sports Car Club shared a collection of its members’ cars, ranging from the popular 4/4 to the legendary Plus 8, in another special display.

Practical Classics’ stand revealed the magazine’s new restoration project, a rare

1981 Renault 14TS, as well as the 1959 Standard Ten Bluebell that was saved from Ford’s scrappage scheme. The team met readers and chatted to show-goers throughout the weekend.

CLOSER TO HOME A special presentation also took place for Trevor Godson, who has attended every Beaulieu autojumble since 1967 and cycled to most of them from his home on the Isle of Wight. To mark his impressive track record, 83-year-old Trevor was presented with a copy of Edward, Lord Montagu’s autobiography Wheels Within Wheels

by Beaulieu’s Managing Director Russell Bowman.

Trevor said: “I just love the show, where I can collect odds and ends for my motorcycles and cars. I used to cycle seven miles to Beaulieu, then walk another six miles around the autojumble, before cycling back to the ferry. The wind always seemed to be against me on the ride home. One year, I bought a spare motorcycle tyre and carried it on my neck as I rode home, only to find I’d bought the wrong size! Another year, I bought a heavy-duty drill and put it in the basket on my bicycle but the basket fell off due to the weight.”

TV AND ROYAL CARS AT BONHAMS Eager bidders competed for astonishing rare and collectable cars in the eagerly anticipated Bonhams sale. Smashing its estimate to sell for £6,670 was a 1952 Rover 75 from the hit TV show All Creatures Great and Small. Familiar to millions of viewers as

the car driven by Robert Hardy’s character, vet Siegfried Farnon, the Rover was originally owned by a former WWI flying ace but is currently in need of restoration work.

Blinders and Mr Selfridge, which sold for £235,750. A 1966 Humber Imperial once owned by politician Jeremy Thorpe was in need of restoration but sold for £1,265.

Another TV star was the 1908 Napier 45hp limousine from Downton Abbey, Peaky

Failing to sell was the 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I, originally owned by HRH the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII before abdicating in 1936. With its sleek fabric-bodied coachwork by Gurney Nutting, this distinctive and unique car was said to fit the image of a ‘Playboy Prince’.

Also failing to sell was the 1979 Bentley T2 personal car of Margaret Thatcher while she was Prime Minister.

BEST STAND Entering into the fun of the show were the winners of the Best Stand Award, with Peter and James Sheppard from Cornwall, David Stevens from Hertfordshire and Colin Feyerband from Bedfordshire all dressed in white coats behind their autojumble stand.

David explained: “We’ve shared a stand for 40 years and this year we are pretending to be doctors, prescribing spare parts to cure classic car ailments. Colin had retired and sold his laboratory to buy a Ferrari, so we have plenty of lab coats on sale with our usual automobilia and general motoring spares. We’re all delighted to have won the award, it’s made our autojumble!”

Lady Montagu and best stand judge Danny Hopkins, the Editor of event media sponsor Practical Classics magazine, presented the winners with a commemorative trophy donated by Lolly Lee in memory of her late father and autojumbler Terry Lee.

JUDITH’S JOTTINGS – WHAT’S NEW FROM THE EVENTS MANAGER Listening to feedback We were very grateful for all the feedback received from traders and visitors at our autojumbles last year, as it is always important for us to know your views on the show. I am very pleased to report that we have taken up several of the suggestions put forward, as detailed below.

Trunk Traders goes back to its roots Following feedback from both the exhibitors and visitors in our post-International Autojumble research, we have decided to make some changes to the Trunk Trading area, to ensure that the Sunday highlight continues to provide amateur autojumblers with an opportunity to clear out their garages and join the trading.

This year, Trunk Traders will revert to being open to cars only and there will be no option for a large plot with trailers or vans.

Below are some important changes to be aware of before booking your stand.

• To maintain the original concept of Trunk Traders, goods should be restricted to surplus or second-hand motoring items being sold by amateur jumblers.

• The use of roof racks will not be permitted SPRING 2020

• Bookings from companies or businesses will not be accepted, as Trunk Traders is for private sellers only.

We appreciate that it is nice to sit and rest while searching the event fields for motoring treasures, so we will be adding more seating across the showground to give people the chance to take the weight off their feet at our autojumble weekends.

Some important things to know...

• Trunk Trader vehicles cannot be parked in the Exhibitors’ car park.

• No goods can be walked through from Exhibitors’ car park to the Trunk Traders field.

• Trunk Traders are not able to erect gazebos, awnings or large umbrellas.

• Trunk Trader vehicles without sufficient goods to sell will not be allowed in and will be turned away, with no refunds given.

• Trunk Traders must abide by the opening and closing times of the event. No vehicle movement or exit will be permitted until the event has closed to the public.

A new prize draw will be introduced at this year’s Spring Autojumble, with the Spirit of the Autojumble Bonus giving stallholders the chance to win a £200 cash prize! All stallholders will be automatically entered by their stand number and the winner – embodying the spirit of the autojumble – will be announced on the Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Remember that you have to be trading at your stand in order to win it!

NEW RETRO VILLAGE AND CLUB DISPLAYS FOR SPRING AUTOJUMBLE With a new Retro Village and anniversary celebration displays, this year’s Spring Autojumble on May 16th & 17th is shaping up to be an event packed with nostalgia.

For the first time at Spring Autojumble,

vintage and retro traders will be offering period-perfect paraphernalia for the retro motoring world. From clothing to collectables, plus accessories, vintage homeware and music, the variety will make Retro Village an irresistible place to browse

and buy. It is the perfect complement to more than 1,000 stands packed with classic car parts, motoring literature and automobilia.

The Saab 96, an extraordinary Swedish saloon that became a rallying favourite, will celebrate its 60th birthday at the show.

Saab Enthusiasts Club will mark the special year with a display of Saabs which were sold in Britain from 1960 up to the marque’s demise. Saab always had an enviable reputation for building innovative and classleading cars, so look out for its eye-catching classics.

The Austin A30 & A35 Owners’ Club will also be celebrating, marking its half century

with a colourful collection of the much-loved ‘baby Austins’ in the showground.

Always a show favourite, Moggyfest will return by popular demand with this year’s celebration of 40 years of the Morris Minor Owners’ Club’s Dorset Branch.

Spring Autojumble media sponsor Practical Classics will also be marking its 40th anniversary at the show. The magazine first hit newsagents’ shelves in May 1980 and

its team aims to gather project cars from throughout the years, including an AustinHealey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite that was a giveaway prize in the first ever issue. Staff members, past and present, will meet show-goers on their stand to chat about old times and future projects.

LOVELY JUBBLY During recent filming at Beaulieu for his latest TV series, Sir David Jason was reunited with his iconic Reliant Regal Supervan from his days as Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses.

Delighting visitors who watched as he filmed an episode of David Jason’s Great British Inventions for More4, David took a spin in Beaulieu’s On Screen Cars favourite. “It’s like coming home,” he said, as he clambered behind the wheel of the three-wheeler for a nostalgic drive.

Sir David also tried the National Motor Museum’s diminutive Peel P50 for size and had everyone laughing as he struggled in and out of the world’s smallest production car. Though he wasn’t keen on the driving experience, with the two-stroke engine buzzing away inches from his legs inside the Peel’s confined cabin. Once he had overcome the unforgiving clutch, David drove around the Beaulieu grounds for the cameras.

This is the second time that David has recently filmed at Beaulieu; In another series for More4, scenes for David Jason’s Secret Service were filmed at Palace House as he discovered more about Beaulieu’s role as a finishing school for secret agents during World War II.

TV PRESENTER DRIVES FOR BEAULIEU Motoring guru Fuzz Townshend got behind the wheel of the National Motor Museum’s 1904 De Dion for the prestigious Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Known to millions of motoring fans as the car restoring expert in the hit TV series Car

SOS, Fuzz was put through his paces in a driving lesson at Beaulieu in preparation for his gruelling drive in the 115 year-old De Dion Bouton Model Q. Joining more than 400 horseless carriages taking to the roads for the world’s longest-running motoring

event, he completed the 60-mile run from London’s Hyde Park to Brighton’s Madeira Drive in good time.

The De Dion was just one of four pre-1905 cars entered into the prestigious event by the National Motor Museum. One of the stars of the show was undoubtedly the 1899 Fiat 3.5hp, which celebrated its 120th birthday and was joined by the 1903 De Dietrich 24hp and 1903 Daimler 22hp.

Beaulieu has a long tradition of famous faces behind the wheel of its veteran cars for the event. Even before he created his first museum, National Motor Museum founder Edward, Lord Montagu took part in the 1950 run in his family’s 1903 De Dion Bouton, accompanied by famous model Barbara Goalen. Since then, Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart and more recently Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood and BBC Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton have perched on the antique upholstery of Beaulieu’s veteran cars for the drive.

NEW MOTORING EVENTS IN 2020 Four new events have been added to Beaulieu’s packed 2020 lineup, with Blue Light Day, Simply Electric, Simply British Classics and Simply BMW all bringing even more excitement to the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Clamber inside the impressive machines used by the Fire and Rescue Service and South Central Ambulance Service, Hampshire Constabulary then see their vintage counterparts in the impressive display. You may even spot a 1950s Green Goddess fire

engine or maybe a 1960s police ‘panda’ car.

Become a big kid for the day and see feature displays, before meeting the incredible crews who drive and ride in the fast response vehicles and learn about their work. The action-packed event takes place on National

Drive It Day, as historic vehicles take to the road up and down the country – so why not make Beaulieu your destination!

The trio of new Simply rallies includes Simply Electric, which sparks into life at the start of May half-term on Sunday 24th May. Enthusiasts will be at the heart of the event, as owners of electric and plug-in hybrids, electric motorcycles and e-bikes are invited to park in the grounds of the National

Motor Museum and talk technology.

From the latest high-performance Tesla, through cutting-edge family cars the Jaguar I-PACE and Audi e-tron, to the popular Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius, all electric vehicles and their owners are welcome. If it runs on battery power, then silently motor your way across the New Forest to join in.

You may even see a classic Sinclair C5.

The nation’s best-loved classics will be the motoring stars of Simply British Classics on September 20th, which will be open to all pre-1980 classic cars built in Britain or by a British manufacturer. From Sunbeam, Austin, Riley and Triumph, to Alvis, Lagonda, Humber and more, all marques from the British motor industry’s bittersweet past are welcome.

Every BMW from the German manufacturer’s distinguished past is invited to Simply BMW on July 19th, as the event gathers all ages and models of the highlyprized marques. All are welcome, from the latest executive saloons and glamorous sports cars, going back through the genre-

defining 3 and 5 Series and high-performance M models to the earlier trend-setting Neue Klasse range of the 1960s, Isetta bubble car and BMW motorcycles.

Bringing back memories of family holidays, driving lessons, baking hot vinyl seats and beige colour schemes will be the long-lost first cars, family wagons, rarely-seen saloons and historic hatchbacks that are invited to join the nostalgia-fuelled display.

Honouring the everyday cars that have disappeared from Britain’s roads and are now highly prized by enthusiasts, all manner of pre-booked classics from 1960-1990 are invited to join Forgotten Favourites.

Owners who would like to take part with their 1960-1990 classic vehicles should get in touch with the Beaulieu events team to be considered – places are limited and show entry is free for vehicles that are accepted.

GOLDEN ARROW FUNDING The National Motor Museum has been awarded £74,527 by Arts Council England to reinterpret Land Speed Record-breaking icon Golden Arrow – using computer generated augmented reality and historic collections to enhance engagement for visitors.

The distinctive 1929 Golden Arrow was a wonder of its time. It was a harmonious blend of technology and design, producing a masterpiece of Art Deco expression which paved the way for two decades of unbroken British record-breaking success. With Major

Henry Segrave in the driving seat, pushing the boundaries of engineering and human endeavor to the limit, this arrow shattered its target and set a new Land Speed Record of 231.36mph.

Today, Golden Arrow is on permanent display in the museum in a multi-media presentation which also features its recordbreaking stablemates the 1920 Sunbeam 350hp, 1927 Sunbeam 1,000hp and 1960 Bluebird CN7. This project The Golden Arrow – Shot from the Past, Aimed at the Future will complement the existing installation with a new display and interactive area. Research on the museum’s rich collections will provide content for digital media and reveal untold stories of the car and those involved with it. Work will begin in January and conclude in March 2022, with the refreshed display remaining on show.

The project will enable schools and universities to explore STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) through a focus on Golden Arrow and the museum will also offer craft sessions inspired by its beautiful design.

Big fun at Little Beaulieu Bring the whole family to Beaulieu this spring and experience the enchanting adventure play area Little Beaulieu. If you’re a small or big kid, let your imagination run wild as you storm up the bridge of the magical wooden palace, which draws on the heritage of Lord Montagu’s ancestral home of Palace House and Beaulieu Abbey.

The fun fantasy play area is crammed with quirky features to try out and secret passageways to discover. Slide through grand fireplaces, peek out from behind portraits and crawl through a trick bookcase to explore every nook and cranny, from his Lordship’s library up to the clock tower lookout and turrets.

Crawl through a garden hedge in the secret tunnel and feel the wind in your hair as you ride along the zip wire on your marvellous day out. A roadway surrounding Little Beaulieu will keep you on track, as you get behind the wheel of a wooden car in the grounds of the National Motor Museum.

Students’ Shell Heritage posters Students from Oak Lodge School, a specialist arts college for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in the New Forest, have created posters to be incorporated into the Shell Heritage exhibition in the National Motor Museum.

Pupils were invited to work on a collaborative project with the Shell Heritage Art Collection and the National Motor Museum Trust. They were tasked with creating a contemporary poster inspired by the renowned Shell collection at Beaulieu.

Eight year 10 pupils visited the Shell exhibition to see the iconic posters in the National Motor Museum, find out about

the artists involved and learn about the history of Shell advertising. They looked closely at some of the vehicles on show, including the 1907 Gobron Brillié fire engine, 1901 Columbia Electric driven by Queen Alexandra and the wartime Willys Jeep.

Supported by school staff, they also sketched in the grounds of Beaulieu Abbey and the ancestral Montagu home of Palace House.

On their return to school, they used their sketches and photographs to develop ideas for work which will contribute to their GCSE art coursework. Exploring a range of different media, they produced their final designs using print, textiles, painting and drawing – and the finished artworks were BITS & PIECES

placed within the traditional Shell poster graphics, as pupils carefully considered the wording, style and colour of text to complete their posters.

Historic Hurricane arrives An historic Triumph Hurricane motorcycle, with a lineage which can be traced back to a machine ridden by Edward, Lord Montagu in a race to New York, has gone on display in the National Motor Museum.

The 1972 Triumph X-75 Hurricane is a superb example of a rare model, which was developed from a modified BSA Rocket 3.

The very same BSA played a pivotal role in the 1969 Daily Mail Transatlantic Air Race which started at London’s Post Office Tower to commemorate 50 years since the first non-stop transatlantic crossing and allowed participants to use any transport to reach the New York finish line. Lord Montagu rode SPRING 2020

as a pillion passenger on the BSA motorcycle for the final leg of his journey across New York to the finish line at the Empire State Building.

Afterwards, the BSA was handed to motorcycle designer Craig Vetter to work his magic on. The prototype he created, named the ‘Vetter Rocket’, was developed

further and re-badged to become the Triumph X-75 Hurricane. Considered to be the world’s first factory-built custom motorcycle, the Hurricane’s dramatic styling and eye-catching triple exhaust pipes made it stand out from competitors.

Motoring in Miniature Playtime comes to the National Motor Museum as the fun-filled family exhibition Motoring in Miniature – the Toys of Your Childhood opens for Easter.

Most of us have early motoring memories from before we learned to drive – and that’s the shiny toys we gazed at in the toy shop window and spent hours ‘driving’ across the living room carpet or in the garden outside.

Gold win for Supercar Weekend Beaulieu Supercar Weekend has won gold in Tourism South East’s Beautiful South Awards as the high-octane event heads towards its tenth year with more special features for 2020.

These were the toys you were told to clear up, the toys you were proud of and the toys that you loved. From tin plate and wooden toys to die-cast and slot cars. See pull-alongs and pedal cars, radio control cars and scale models. Spot familiar car jigsaws, board games and computer games . . . these are the toys of your childhood.

Recollections of the Tufty Club road safety campaign are bound to make you nostalgic and the memories will come flooding back as you share stories of your motoring history with the exhibition that all of the family will enjoy.

As Beaulieu’s most successful show in 2019 – with almost 2,000 extra event-goers bringing this year’s total to 16,800 – the A-Plan Insurance-sponsored event beat off competition from the awards’ record number of entries.

Competing against three other finalists in the Tourism Event/Festival of the Year category, the packed two-day event was judged to be a highlight for any visitor to the region and a must-see for families and motoring enthusiasts alike.

This year’s Beaulieu Supercar Weekend returns on August 8th & 9th.

NEWS FROM THE WORKSHOP The National Motor Museum engineers are always kept busy maintaining the collection of over 280 historic vehicles. Some cars – such as the 1920 Sunbeam 350hp – are long-term projects that are being brought back to top condition in stages, while others – such as the 1935 Auburn 851 – call for more urgent attention.

Labour of love The 1920 Sunbeam 350hp is a labour of love for the workshop engineers. Having painstakingly rebuilt its complex V12 engine over a number of years, in 2015 they triumphantly took this landmark machine back to Pendine Sands in South Wales for a

low-speed reconstruction of its World Land Speed Record which was set there a century before. However, while the engine is now in fine fettle, the gearbox is still the missing part of its puzzle.

At some point after World War II, the

original gearbox was removed and by the time the Sunbeam became an exhibit at the National Motor Museum, it was fitted with a temporary gearbox from an Albion 35hp. Only designed to handle a tenth of the engine’s power, this gearbox also lacked a transmission brake – an important part of the Sunbeam’s original brake set-up.

Reinstating a suitable gearbox has been a priority for the engineers, as the next stage of the car’s ongoing preservation. With help from the museum’s supporters, a sturdy Bentley C-type gearbox, which would be better suited to the task, has been sourced and adapted to fit the Sunbeam’s chassis with custom-made mounts.

Best of all, this is enabling engineers to install a sizable and historically correct transmission, brake and propshaft. Once the installation has been completed the Sunbeam will be fitted with the robust transmission its mighty engine deserves.

Transmission woes The 1935 Auburn 851 has been inflicted with its own transmission woes lately.

Regularly driven in motoring events across the world, in 2019 this glamorous roadster was entered into the Jewel of Piemonte rally, which took place in the Piemonte region of

Italy, before exploring the Alps and finally finishing in Monaco.

Sadly, on the first day of the event, the Auburn suffered a major axle calamity as it pulled away from a toll booth, when the pinion gear in its differential stripped half of its teeth. This damage ended the event for the car. Considering how many trouble-free miles the car has travlled, including its 2,800mile adventure from Shanghai to Beijing in 2007, this failure was especially frustrating.

Back in the workshop, the axle was stripped down to reveal that the crown wheel had also been heavily damaged by the pinion gear failure. Fortunately, the damage was limited to these two components and, as spares were included with the car when it came to Beaulieu in the 1960s, the workshop engineers will soon have this impressive machine mended and back in action.

Spring Lecture Season Talks Globetrotting adventures and automotive treasures are at the heart of the new programme of spring lectures at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.

By popular demand, Steph Jeavons Returns on Saturday 21st March. The author, journalist and motorcycling adventurer will talk about leading the first all-female riding group from Kathmandu to Mount Everest Base Camp. This evening includes exclusive access to the museum from 6pm.

The Petroliana Experience on Saturday 18th April will offer a guide through the world of vintage petrol pumps, period garage equipment, advertising and collectables from the golden age of motoring. Join Alan Chandler whose collection numbers almost 4,000 items.

All of the talks start at 7.30pm in the Lecture Theatre of the museum’s Collections Centre. Tickets at £10 (or £7.50 for Friends of the NMMT) are available from Theresa Browning at friends@beaulieu.co.uk or 01590 614792.
