MOTOPIA? PAST FUTURE VISIONS EXHIBITION OPENS

A thought-provoking new exhibition, looking at future visions of motoring from the past, opened in the National Motor Museum in May. Motopia? Past Future Visions showcases a journey through 130 years of future thinking about automobility.

Running until 14th April 2024, the exhibition has four key themes. Vehicle visions looks at car design concepts, propulsion asks how our vehicles are powered (particularly timely, with the resurgence of electric vehicles), architectural dreams includes science fiction visions, and urban solutions shows how vehicles have constantly been re-imagined to suit our needs and surroundings.

Concept cars, visions of the future from the start of the 20th century and previous ideas on how we travel and power our vehicles are on display, with visitors encouraged to consider future ideas for an ideal way of living and getting about.

SUNBEAM 1000HP RESTORATION CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

The National Motor Museum has launched the Sunbeam 1000hp Restoration Campaign, to raise vital funds for the rebuild of the car’s two colossal engines, with the ambition of returning the Sunbeam to Daytona Beach in 2027 for the 100-year anniversary of its World Land Speed Record.

Once the fastest car in the world, the Sunbeam, affectionately nicknamed ‘The Slug’, hasn’t run in decades. The Restoration Campaign has set out to breathe life into this extraordinary car’s twin V12 aero engines, to have them running again.

Working together with Hampshire-based Brookspeed Automotive, the campaign aims to raise £300k to complete the restoration and take the Sunbeam back to Daytona Beach in Florida for the 100th anniversary of Major Henry Segrave’s 203.792mph World Land Speed Record on March 29th 1927.

Expert restoration work is already being carried out in front of visitors in the Museum and documented with filming and blogs. Opportunities are being offered for schools, colleges and universities to get involved with STEM workshops and activities, while it is intended that the Sunbeam will go on show at motoring events throughout the UK and Europe, as well as tour motoring museums across America.

SCULPTURE AT BEAULIEU RETURNS WITH AWARD-WINNING SCULPTORS

A vibrant display of 300 sculptures is on show for an extended period in Beaulieu’s Palace House and its grounds and gardens, until 24th September, showcasing the work of 57 internationally acclaimed sculptors.

With each piece set against a perfect backdrop, from the atmospheric ruins of 13th century Beaulieu Abbey to the Victorian flower garden, the exhibition brings together stunning and thought-provoking works.

You can’t miss the three-metre tall horse head Mare, made from 7,000 welded components, while the huge Sacrifice, in bronze with a copper circle, was created to be pinned to the side of a hill. Meanwhile, a ‘patchwork’ giant pear made from pieces of stainless steel with inlaid glass mosaic will lie beneath the branches of a tree. From steel foxgloves, toadstools, barn owls and hares to coloured glass fish and revolving stainedglass shards, there are sculptures to grace any garden.

For 2023, there are special Thursday evening openings for Sculpture at Beaulieu viewings when you may even catch a glimpse of a sculptor at work, such as award-winning RHS Chelsea exhibitor Nicolas Moreton with his majestic figurative stone carvings.

2023 show one of the best ever. With nearly 18,000 show-goers heading to Beaulieu for the two-day show, a crowd-pleasing favourite that celebrated the excitement and variety of the supercar world was the demonstration run

As a wide variety of epic machines display their impressive acceleration and braking abilities on Beaulieu’s Chestnut Avenue, spectators lined

the route to cheer on the drivers, while the big screen on the Arena broadcast the action live.

From lightweight, high-revving performance cars to huge-engined monsters, all kinds of machines took to the track. Amongst the Lamborghinis, Ferraris, McLarens, Porsches and more that wowed the crowds, with their ear-splitting exhausts and squealing tyres, The Stig put a prototype Ford Mustang Dark Horse through its paces on both days.

Another special guest was motorsport rising star Gus Burton. The 2022 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Rookie Champion, attending the show with Supercar Paddock Drivers’ Marquee sponsors NFU Mutual, had brought along his racing Porsche for visitors to admire. Gus was interviewed by the show’s commentator Tim Watson on the Arena, chatting about his time in motor racing and sharing some of his tales of the track, and also took part in the demonstration run in his father’s Aston Martin.

AMAZING MOTORS AND LIVE MUSIC FOR CUSTOM AND AMERICAN SHOW

Over 5,600 visitors and participants made Beaulieu their Father’s Day destination for the Custom and American Show, enjoying the colourful line-up of 406 customised and American cars and bikes, alongside live music and trade stands.

Held in association with the Solent Renegades club, the top display on Sunday 18th June gathered together American cars and bikes as diverse as a pre-war Ford Model A and a modern-day Humvee, not to mention 1970s muscle cars, 1950s sedans, and even a trio of trucks which towered over the other vehicles. While jaw-dropping custom trikes, powerful hot rods and all manner of impressive custom cars also turned heads as they parked up in the grounds of the National Motor Museum. Click here to watch a video of the show highlights. While showgoers admired the display, talked cars, browsed trade stands and enjoyed delicious street food, and youngsters had their faces painted, the Honky Tonk Angels and Rooster Live took to the

stage, performing great rock and roll numbers throughout the day.

A highlight for many custom car fans was the chance to meet show ambassador and custom car builder Andy Saunders, who had brought along his latest creation, Deja. Four years since he first exhibited his Riley at the show, the oncederelict car has been totally transformed into a stunning open-top show car. Andy chatted with other enthusiasts about their projects and signed copies of his book, while artist Maxime Xavier had brought along her stunningly airbrushed custom car Sundancer.
