Introducing Voice

Valuing experience for healthy longevity innovation

Our Mission

Adding intelligence to ageing and longevity

If there’s one thing the world needs today, it’s intelligence. However, whilst intelligence is necessary, it’s not sufficient to solve the many complex issues affecting humanity.

Intelligence is everywhere - driven by human genius and a hunger for progress, evolving and advancing as we push the boundaries of what is possible. Daily new discoveries and inventions demonstrate the extraordinary brilliance of people to design solutions and create tools unimaginable only a few years earlier.

Intelligence is in data - with research past, present and future generating a wealth of knowledge and wisdom that stems from human experience. Engaging with people and their loved ones to capture their thoughts and feelings, identifying their unique wants and needs and how this evolves and

changes across a lifetime. Imagine if we integrated these different sources of intelligence and had the power to harness lived experience, amplify greater understanding of people’s aspirations and desires, and merge the strengths and capabilities of different generations and cultures.

At NICA, we combine these valuable assets and knowledge across communities, cultures and circumstances, leveraging artificial intelligence and big data, with deliberation, ethics and technical ingenuity. We call this Ageing Intelligence®

Case Study

NICA + Voice are working with SymPhysis Medical to improve the treatment experience for people with late-stage cancers.

SymPhysis Medical aims to bring to market innovative medical devices to improve the quality of life for palliative care patients. SymPhysis’ medical device RelEaze will have a major impact,

enabling patients to remain active and mobile by treating themselves at home without the assistance of health practitioners or the need for GP or hospital appointments.

As a result of working with Voice, the feedback we got both validated our design direction in terms of was it going to be as user friendly for our end patient population as we needed it to be? But also, feedback we got has resulted in us improving on the design as well

Case Study

NICA + Voice are working with Kymira and Ida Sports to Maximise Inclusiveness in Sports through Female-centric Innovation and Technology (MISFIT) as part of the UKRI Healthy Ageing Challenge.

The MISFIT project looks to address the barriers women aged 50+ face to getting and/or staying physically active due to a lack of female specific sports technologies, sportswear, and footwear.

The aim is to provide evidence-based information regarding bespoke exercise regimes and prevent injury to support continued safe participation in physical activity.

Voice provides state-of-the-art facilities at NICA and their staff are knowledgeable, skilled and prepared for anything we have thrown at them. I have enjoyed working with Voice and I can’t wait to continue to work alongside them both as part of our current project, and for future projects too

Case Study

The UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing is the first in the world to evaluate Piaggio Fast Forward’s ‘Gita® robots’, a cargo-carrying robot which follows you around, to assess the impact on the mobility of older adults.

This citizen-led project examines how users adopt this ‘tech companion’ and evaluate how it can help mitigate loneliness and isolation, boost healthy behaviour by encouraging more walking and foster more independent and sustainable living.

It is hoped that using the Gita® robot will encourage older people to walk more, giving them more confidence to go out into their communities by acting as a responsive companion and making them feel more connected with the outside world.

PFF is interested not only in NICA’s research agenda but also in its community partnership model, working with various local and regional entities and organisations, so as to improve our products, refine their capabilities, and, most important of all, to contribute to the building of thriving neighbourhood’s and communities.

About Us

National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA)

NICA is a global organisation supported by an initial investment from UK Government to help co-innovatetogether with citizens and private and public organisations - products, services and experiences and deliver them to the market through innovative, ethical, and sustainable business models.

We add intelligence to ageing and longevity by connecting and interpreting the personal, social, environmental, and economic dimensions that underpin the different stages of life. Our purpose is to create a world in which we all live better, for longer, caring about people and the planet now and in the future.

Valuing our Human Capital and Experience (Voice)

NICA’s sister organisation, Voice, is a unique organisation, with a global citizen network Voice members contribute immense wisdom, knowledge, ideas, and imagination to pinpoint unmet wants, needs, preferences and aspirations - effectively harnessed to drive innovation for healthy ageing and longevity and improve research and evidence.

Voice collaborates with universities across the UK including Edinburgh University and Imperial College London with international chapters in the US (East Coast), Canada, Australia and Italy. Further chapters are planned in Taiwan, Singapore, Spain and India.
